Visual Modulation Transfer Function As A Predictor Of Acuity, Thomas A. Sebring Jun 1981

Visual Modulation Transfer Function As A Predictor Of Acuity, Thomas A. Sebring

Theses

The use of Fourier and modulation transfer techniques implies the ability to characterize an optical system and predict the output resulting from various inputs. In this study, the optical system is defined as a projection system, rear projection screen, and the human eye. A determination of modulation thresholds of visibility for a series of sinusoidal (in transmittance) test objects results after some manipulation in the modulation transfer function of the complete system. This result is then used to predict the subject's ability to resolve conventional acuity challenges. These conventional test objects are then manufactured for projection in the system. Correlation …

Factors Influencing The Acceptance Of Computer Assisted Estimating, Sharon Ryan May 1981

Factors Influencing The Acceptance Of Computer Assisted Estimating, Sharon Ryan

Theses

In spite of its advantages over manual estimating methods, computer assisted estimating (CAE) lacks acceptance in the printing industry today. Possible reasons for non-acceptance are: 1) the cost of CAE, 2) CAE's lack of versatility, 3) printing manager's lack of knowledge on the subject of CAE and/or computers in general, and 4) the small size of the majority of the printing companies does not warrant the use of CAE. A survey questionnaire was designed for the purpose of finding out how printing companies feel about CAE, and if the reasons listed above are, in fact, major influences on their decision …

Edge Sharpness Effects On Computer-Generated Holograms, Clinton S. Potter May 1981

Edge Sharpness Effects On Computer-Generated Holograms, Clinton S. Potter

Theses

Computer-generated holograms refer to a class of holograms which are produced as a graphical output from a computer. This paper investigates the relation. ship between the resolution in the system used to re duce the graphical artwork to a reasonable size for diffracting light and the quality of the reconstructed hologram. A number of reduction schemes are examined including a one-step reduction onto a general purpose film, a one-step reduction onto a high resolution film and a two-step reduction scheme using coherent illumination during the second reduction.

The Evaluation Of Positive Photoresist Speed, Donis Flagello May 1981

The Evaluation Of Positive Photoresist Speed, Donis Flagello

Theses

The feasibility of photographic speed values for positive photoresist is evaluated. Speed is defined as the reciprocal of exposure necessary to produce a desired response. An outline of the microlithographic process, the chemistry of positive resist, and previous exposure models precede the experimental body of work to facilitate understanding of the photoresist system. The experimental method proposes a mathematical model describing the resist response to exposure. Photographic speed values result from this model. They are tested for sensitivity to process changes using Analysis of Variance. One speed definition is chosen as a possible standard and process control. It is based …

Bibliotherapy To Help Young Children Cope With Their Problems, Marjorie J. Semon Apr 1981

Bibliotherapy To Help Young Children Cope With Their Problems, Marjorie J. Semon

Theses

Since children are facing many stresses both from within and without, it is felt that bibliotherapy may be a way of helping them face and cope with their problems. After a search to see if a curriculum guide had been developed to help kindergarten children through bibliotherapy, none was discovered. An extensive review of existing literature was then made to learn about children and stress at the pre-operational level, as well as an in-depth study of bibliotherapy from its history, research on bibliotherapy pertaining to young children, the qualifications of the bibliotherapist, how one determines whether the need exists, and …

Predicting Color Print Filtration And Exposure, James A. Klingshirn Apr 1981

Predicting Color Print Filtration And Exposure, James A. Klingshirn

Theses

A method of mathematically modeling the response of a system in which color reflection prints are made from a negative was investigated. Data was generated by making a series of prints with different yellow and magenta filtrations at a series of exposures. First, second and third order regression curves were fit to the filtration versus reflection density curves and the exposure versus density curves that were thus generated. The predictions of the sets of equations were compared to the data and it was found that the filtration could be predicted more accurately than the exposure time, because, the response curves …

The Effect Of Camera Motion On Mtf And Sqf For Handheld Camera At Two Weights, John Griffith Mar 1981

The Effect Of Camera Motion On Mtf And Sqf For Handheld Camera At Two Weights, John Griffith

Theses

Two hundred seven measurements of camera motion, made while operators took photographs, were used to calculate the average Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and Subjective Quality Factor (SQF) due to the motion. Eight experiments were performed with a 35mm camera at weights of 300 and 600 grams. The camera displacement path was sampled at intervals ranging from 0.5 milliseconds to 15.6 milliseconds. The MTF and SQF were calculated, at several shutter times, from the measured displacement paths using the model of a perfectly efficient shutter. SQF was a linear function of shutter time. The MTF due to camera motion and shutter …

An Investigation Of A Mathematical Model To Characterize The Nonlinear Nature Of A Lithographic Film System, David S. Holbrook Feb 1981

An Investigation Of A Mathematical Model To Characterize The Nonlinear Nature Of A Lithographic Film System, David S. Holbrook

Theses

An attempt was made to obtain a set of spatial transfer functions which would allow the prediction of output effective exposure distributions for a nonlinear lithographic film system. Slit exposures were used as one-dimensional system inputs. It was proposed that the use of slits would allow the calculation of a general system transfer function to be simplified. The mathematical model chosen to describe this nonlinear transfer was shown to be invalid due to the nonlinear relationship of small area system gain (small area output effective exposure divided by the input exposure) as a function on input exposure. The model,, based …

The Study Of Factors That Affect Cell Depth During Etching In Direct Transfer Gravure, Somchai Sringkarrinkul Jan 1981

The Study Of Factors That Affect Cell Depth During Etching In Direct Transfer Gravure, Somchai Sringkarrinkul

Theses

This thesis is to study the four main factors which affect cell depth in copper cylinder etching in direct transfer gravure, and using ferric chloride as an etchant. The multivariate regression method was used to analyze the sample responses (cell depth) of nine different treatments of an etched-screened-tone scale . The regression equations for predicting cell depths from the four variable factors were calculated and the optimum condition which would give the best tonal gradation was predicted. Also the factors which cause uneven cell depth were detected.

The Use Of The Spline Function In Computer-Aided Type Design, Kathleen Barry Albertini Jan 1981

The Use Of The Spline Function In Computer-Aided Type Design, Kathleen Barry Albertini

Theses

The traditional type designer works with pen, in and paper. The characters that he designs go through many changes before the whole font is finalized and set in the printing medium. Further alterations to the font may occur after he prints and evaluates a sample piece of text. Computer-aided type design presents the type designer with a new design tool. Computers have been used in the printing industry for typesetting; the automation of type design is a logical next step. Freeing the designer from the repetitive tasks of the design cycle is one obvious advantage cf using computers. But computer-aided …

The Effect Of Screen Ruling On The Saturation Of Pastel Gamut Colors, John T. Chittick Nov 1980

The Effect Of Screen Ruling On The Saturation Of Pastel Gamut Colors, John T. Chittick

Theses

Reproduction of pastel colors by offset lithography produces images that have less color saturation than their continuous tone counterparts. This problem is primarily attributable to the halftone structure which approximates continuous tone pastels with large amounts of white paper and small amounts of chromatic ink. This thesis investigates the effect of screen frequency upon pastel color saturation. Single and two color overprint tints of nominal five, 10, and 15 percent printing dot areas were printed in 85, 100, 120, 133, 150, and 200 lines screen rulings. The reflectances of these colors were measured with a colorimeter and converted to CIEL*a*b* …

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula Sep 1980

Osmotic And Mean Activity Coefficients Of Libr And Lic In Methanol At 25, 35, And 45 Degrees C, Peggy Tomasula

Theses

Vapor pressure depression data of LiBr and LiCl in methanol at temperatures of 25,35, and 45°C were measured in the molality range 0.1-4.4m using a static method, where the difference in vapor pressure of the electrolytic solution is compared to that of pure methanol.

Osmotic coefficients were calculated from the vapor pressure data. This data was then correlated with both the one parameter Bromley equation and the three parameter Pitzer equation. For all systems at all temperatures, the data were better correlated by the Pitzer equation than with the Bromley equation. Mean activity coefficients of the two salts at the …

Design And Production Of A Comprehensive Graininess Scale For Use In Electrophotography, Susan B. Mueller

Theses

Methods were investigated and modeled to produce a graininess by density sample matrix. The graininess values were based on a model derived for certain imaging processes that has a high correlation to the subjective impression of graininess for nominally uniform image areas. After modeling several processes, a photographic technique was chosen and a matrix manufactured.

Temperature Dependency Of The Group Interaction Parameters In The Agsm And Unifac Models For The Prediction Of Heats Of Mixing, Ignatius Okoronkwo Ojini May 1980

Temperature Dependency Of The Group Interaction Parameters In The Agsm And Unifac Models For The Prediction Of Heats Of Mixing, Ignatius Okoronkwo Ojini

Theses

A four-parameter group-contribution model (UNIFAC) has been developed for the prediction of heats of mixing of non-electrolyte mixtures. Both the UNIFAC and AGSM models are evaluated over a wide range of temperature dependencies of the group interaction parameters. The UNIFAC model has been chosen over the AGSM model and an optimum parameter-temperature relationship has been established.

Adopting the optimum temperature dependency, group inter-action parameters have been calculated using UNIFAC for the prediction of four types of mixtures: n-Alcohols/n-Alkanes; Benzene/n-Alkanes; Nitriles/n-Alkanes; Amines/n-Alkanes.

Transient Phenomena Of Polymer : Aniline-Formaldehyde Fiber And Copolymer Aniline-Phenol-Formaldehyde Fiber, Ing-On Vibulbhan-Watts

Theses

The rotational viscometer which had a uniform stress, designed by Dr. W. Philippoff was used for measuring the viscosities of 6% L-200 in PRIMOL 355 and Lekutherm x-30. Viscosities of 6% L-200 in PRIMOL 355 (polyisobutylene) was measured to check the change of material that was left in the visometer for almost two years. The result showed that the new viscosities are higher than the older results.

Analysis Of Unsteady-State Heat Conduction In A Cylinder With The Finite Element Method, Richard F. Bernard May 1980

Analysis Of Unsteady-State Heat Conduction In A Cylinder With The Finite Element Method, Richard F. Bernard

Theses

Unsteady-state heat conduction in a cylinder of finite dimensions with constant physical and thermal properties was analyzed with the finite element method. Symmetry of the cylinder and application of Newman's method reduced the problem to two independent one-dimensional problems. Finite element equations for the axial and radial dimensions were developed utilizing Galerkin's method of weighted residuals. Crank-Nicholson approximations were used for time derivatives. A computer program was written for solution of the finite element equations.

Solutions obtained were conditionally stable; dependent on the value of the ratio KΔt/ρCpl2. For values of the ratio less than 1/3, errors in …

Impingement Of An Axi-Symmetric Jet On A Flat Surface, Amir J. Daibes May 1980

Impingement Of An Axi-Symmetric Jet On A Flat Surface, Amir J. Daibes

Theses

An incompressible, inviscid irrotational flow model was used to represent the normal impingement of a circular axisymmetric jet upon a flat plate. An analytical investigation was conducted to determine the free surface of the jet and the solution of the potential flow problem was obtained using finite difference techniques for jet height-to-nozzle radius ratio of 2.4.

The velocity and pressure distributions at the plate surface and along the jet centerline were obtained.

The results from the finite difference solution are in close agreement with other most recent results from available experimental, and approximate solutions to the potential flow problem.
