Modeling Stellar Interferometry For Hess (High Energy Stereoscopic System) Stars, Gwynlyn Hannah, Debra Bradfield
Modeling Stellar Interferometry For Hess (High Energy Stereoscopic System) Stars, Gwynlyn Hannah, Debra Bradfield
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The radius of a single star is constrained by a combination of stellar interferometry, which measures the angular size of the star, and the star’s distance, determined from the measured stellar parallax. Many stars hotter than the Sun rapidly rotate and should appear non-circular in the sky. The angular diameters of four stars ( Centauri, Crucis, Sagittarii, and Scorpii) have recently been measured by intensity interferometry using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) at two wavelength bands, 375 nm and 470 nm (Vogel et al. 2025). Two of the stars, Centauri and Crucis, have the same measured angular size in …
Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Bio-Mimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel
Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Bio-Mimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Exploring planetary surfaces presents a major challenge for robotic systems, as traditional wheels and legs often struggle with uneven, unpredictable, and steep terrain. Nature offers a potential solution: mountain goats navigate rough landscapes with ease due to the unique structure and materials of their hooves. This project seeks to develop a robotic hoof that mimics these natural advantages, improving traction, durability, and adaptability for extraterrestrial exploration. To achieve this, the project will focus on selecting materials that closely replicate the composition of an organic hoof. The early prototypes will be printed in 3-D using cost-effective materials, while the final design …
Sirius Nlte Updates And Improvements, Katelyn Sonnen
Sirius Nlte Updates And Improvements, Katelyn Sonnen
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Sirius A (Alpha Canis Majoris), with its slow rotation and stable atmospheric conditions, serves as an ideal candidate for 1-D stellar atmosphere spectral synthesis. Its mass, radius, and surface gravity are known with great precision (within 1%), making it a key benchmark for stellar astrophysics. However, the elemental composition of Sirius’ atmosphere remains one of its most uncertain parameters. Kurucz and Furenlid (1979) produced the Sample Spectral Atlas for Sirius, covering wavelengths from 354 nm to 440 nm, the first high signal-to-noise, high spectral resolution atlas of the star. In an effort to improve the accuracy of the spectral synthesis, …

Advancing Laser Communication For Mars Orbital Missions, Om Acharya, Vedant Tyagi
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The increasing complexity of Mars exploration missions necessitates high-bandwidth, low latency communication systems. Traditional radio frequency (RF) communication is constrained by bandwidth limitations and high power consumption, making laser-based optical communication a promising alternative. This study examines the feasibility of implementing laser communication for Mars orbital missions, emphasizing key technological components such as pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) systems, relay satellite networks, and optical amplification techniques. We analyze challenges such as beam alignment, spacecraft jitter, and atmospheric interference while exploring mitigation strategies, including adaptive optics and precise beam-steering mechanisms. Case studies of NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), ILLUMA-T, and …

From Talk To Science Literacy: Using Structured Student Talk To Support Newcomer Multilingual Learners In High School, Matthew W. De Boer, Rui Niu-Cooper
Michigan Reading Journal
Newcomer multilingual learners (MLs) often experience significant barriers to oral participation in secondary classrooms, despite the central role of talk in language development, academic learning, and community belonging. Research indicates that while comprehension skills may continue to develop, opportunities for structured oral expression are frequently limited, particularly in teacher-led instructional settings. This article examines how intentional Structured Student Talk (SST) routines can support newcomer MLs in transitioning from classroom silence to meaningful participation. Drawing on interactionist theories of language development, cognitive load theory, and affective filter research, the article argues that oral language must be explicitly scaffolded within content instruction …

The present disclosure relates to an end-to-end agentic artificial intelligence system capable of autonomously ingesting live serving logs, isolating performance issues, mathematically verifying hypotheses using deterministic tool-calls, and deploying safe, low-latency fixes to a serving stack. The system chunks data into semantic problem slices and generates natural-language hypotheses. To prevent hallucination, the system executes deterministic queries against live data to verify its own hypotheses. Verified insights are translated into simple, non-machine-learning programmable rules that execute rapidly in production. These rules are pushed to a limited fraction of live traffic, where a real-time monitor compares performance against a baseline, automatically shutting …

Contemporary recommendation architectures optimize short-horizon behavioral objectives such as click-through rate, retention, conversion probability, watch-time maximization, and engagement persistence. While these systems achieve high efficiency in immediate interaction optimization, they systematically fail to model longitudinal human development, identity continuity, aspiration stabilization, and temporally coherent cognitive evolution. Existing recommender systems operate under an implicit assumption that preferences are stationary or slowly drifting latent variables inferable from interaction sequences. This assumption becomes increasingly invalid in high-dimensional socio-cognitive environments where users are not static consumers but dynamically evolving agents whose identities emerge through recursive interactions between cognition, social exposure, emotional state transitions, epistemic …
Enhanced No₂ Gas Sensing Using Silver-Doped Cadmium Telluride Nanocrystalline Thin Films, Tunis Balasim Hassan
Enhanced No₂ Gas Sensing Using Silver-Doped Cadmium Telluride Nanocrystalline Thin Films, Tunis Balasim Hassan
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a toxic pollutant that necessitates sensitive and reliable monitoring systems. Conventional gas sensors often lack adequate responsiveness and fast recovery under changing conditions and therefore create a need for semiconductors with enhanced performance, especially at high industrial temperatures (around 250 °C). The study therefore aims to synthesis and evaluate silver-doped cadmium telluride (Ag:CdTe) thin films as NO₂ gas sensors. Pure CdTe and Ag:CdTe with silver concentrations of 5, 10, and 15 wt% were prepared by a co-precipitation process. XRD verified cubic symmetry with a progressive fall in crystallite size (6.67 nm to 5.46 nm at 15 …

IntroductionThe memory wall phenomenon—where advances in processor performance significantly outpace those in memory subsystems-poses a fundamental challenge for contemporary computing systems. In memory-bound applications, memory subsystem behavior dominates performance, yet existing analysis approaches present significant limitations: detailed microarchitectural simulators require days to weeks to simulate modest workloads; hardware performance counters provide only aggregate statistics that obscure temporal and spatial access patterns; and scaled simulation approaches face challenges in capturing contention effects, bandwidth saturation, and interference patterns that emerge at larger scales. These limitations reflect a processor-centric design philosophy—in both performance analysis tools and system co-design methodologies—that is increasingly misaligned with …

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Chronotherapy aims to maximise treatment efficacy while minimising side effects by scheduling treatment according to personal biological rhythms. In recent years, randomised clinical trials (RCTs) have been conducted to evaluate whether scheduled blood pressure interventions can improve patient outcomes. However, reports of time-of-day effects have attracted rebuttals and engendered methodological debate. A perfectly controlled chronotherapy trial (i.e., a trial that assesses the effect of assigning time of intervention) will never be feasible in the real world; yet some factors may be more critical to consider and control for than others. To advance the conversation about how best to evaluate the …
Storyteller: Training-Free Narrative Grounding And Forseebench: Evaluation For Long Form Audio Description, Seung Hyun Hahm
Storyteller: Training-Free Narrative Grounding And Forseebench: Evaluation For Long Form Audio Description, Seung Hyun Hahm
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Understanding long-form video requires tracking events, motivations, and relationships across time rather than describing isolated frames. However, existing video--language models (VLMs) and audio description (AD) systems often generate short-horizon descriptions that omit narrative context, causal intent, and story continuity, limiting accessibility for blind and low-vision (BLV) audiences. This thesis investigates how long-form AD can be grounded in narrative memory without relying on expensive supervised training pipelines or heavily curated annotations.
We propose StoryTeller, a training-free retrieval-augmented framework for long-form audio description. Instead of depending solely on frame-level perception, StoryTeller summarizes observations into structured narrative facts that capture who did what …
Approval Motivations In Sharing Humorous Tiktok's, Mariam Al-Areedy
Approval Motivations In Sharing Humorous Tiktok's, Mariam Al-Areedy
InnovateHER Meeting 2026
TikTok is a short-form video platform where users create and share content that is often centered around humor, trends, and everyday social experiences. In face-to-face interactions, people typically rely on immediate feedback to navigate conversations, often using approval seeking behaviors to gain positive reactions and rejection-avoidant behaviors to reduce the risk of negative judgement. While these motivations are well-established in in-person settings, less is known about how they function in digital environments like TikTok, where teens privately share humorous content without immediate social cues to guide their interactions. My general hypothesis was that both rejection avoidance and approval-seeking behaviors will …

Machine Learning For Modeling In An Elementary Differential Equations Class, Nathan Albin, Andrew G. Bennett, Abhinav Chand
Machine Learning For Modeling In An Elementary Differential Equations Class, Nathan Albin, Andrew G. Bennett, Abhinav Chand
CODEE Journal
Mixing machine learning with modeling is an area of increasing importance. This paper presents a lesson where students model a spring-mass system both using traditional analysis with linear damping and using machine learning to learn the damping from real data. The machine learning is implemented in a Jupyter notebook hosted on Google Colab, allowing students to train the neural network without requiring the students to carry out coding. Students get experience with how machine learning can fail, how it can work, and the time and data requirements for machine learning to succeed, and are asked to apply this knowledge to …
Parameter Estimation In Ode Models Using Least-Squares Regression, Ulrich A. Hoensch
Parameter Estimation In Ode Models Using Least-Squares Regression, Ulrich A. Hoensch
CODEE Journal
We present a method of estimating model parameters for non-linear ODEs using least-squares regression. The coefficient of determination can be used as a measure of model fit. The method is demonstrated using US population data to fit a logistic growth model. Also, a competing species model is used to describe the interaction of two different species of yeast.

Exploring Resource-Efficient Deep Learning For Medical Image Segmentation, Pallabi Dutta
Exploring Resource-Efficient Deep Learning For Medical Image Segmentation, Pallabi Dutta
Doctoral Theses
Automated medical image segmentation improves diagnostic accuracy by au tomating the precise delineation of target anatomical structures in the input images. Artificial Intelligence (AI), and specifically, Deep Learning (DL), has emerged as a state-of-the-art approach for this task. However, the significant computational demands of DL approaches often hinders their deployment. Ad vanced models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs), require substantial processing power and a large memory footprint, limiting their use in resource-constrained settings. This thesis aims to address this challenge by developing a series of novel, resource-efficient DL models that achieve high segmentation accuracy with reduced …
The Impact Of Optimization Approximation Algorithms On The Performance Of The Bht-Qaoa, Ali Al-Bayaty, Marek Perkowski
The Impact Of Optimization Approximation Algorithms On The Performance Of The Bht-Qaoa, Ali Al-Bayaty, Marek Perkowski
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article investigates the performance impact of five classical optimization approximation algorithms on our previously introduced quantum search algorithm, termed the Boolean–Hamiltonians Transform for Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (BHT-QAOA), to effectively search for all best-approximated solutions for Boolean-based problems. These optimization approximation algorithms are BFGS, L-BFGS-B, SLSQP, COBYLA, and COBYQA. Their performance impact is evaluated and compared using two proposed performance metrics—(i) the final number of function evaluations (the lower numbers denote the best optimization approximation algorithms) and (ii) the final quality of qubit measurements (the higher values indicate all best-approximated solutions were found for a problem). Arbitrary classical Boolean …

Modular Aerial Suppression Architecture (Masa), Michael Victor Caldwell Mr.
Modular Aerial Suppression Architecture (Masa), Michael Victor Caldwell Mr.
Defensive Publications Series
The Modular Aerial Suppression Architecture (MASA) is an open-hardware conceptual aerial firefighting platform designed around segmented ballistic fire-suppressant deployment rather than conventional liquid-tank dumping systems. The architecture proposes the use of modular cargo-based deployment systems integrated into reversible commercial or cargo aircraft platforms, allowing suppressant payloads to be delivered through stabilized aerodynamic cone units intended to improve directional placement accuracy in high-wind wildfire environments.
Unlike traditional airtankers that rely on large liquid retardant releases susceptible to wind drift, atomization, and severe center-of-gravity slosh dynamics, MASA utilizes discrete suppressant payload units engineered with forward-weighted ballistic stability and passive fin-controlled descent characteristics. …

Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure details a 100% organic, non-hazardous, and fully biodegradable insulation system engineered specifically as a high-performance alternative to traditional light straw-clay (leichtlehm) construction in northern, non-agricultural, or arctic climates. The system completely replaces both geological clay and agricultural straw with locally harvested, invasive, and wild northern biological inputs. The structural insulation matrix utilizes a high-silica, woody, and hollow-stemmed fiber substrate sourced from standing dead, wild invasive perennial weeds—specifically European Common Reed (Phragmites australis), Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense), or Giant Reed Sweetgrass (Glyceria maxima). These plants …

Invisible Rotorcraft Using Boreal Glass Technology, Natalie M. Durdle Miss
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure establishes a low-tech, field-expedient, manned rotary-wing aircraft (specifically a gyroplane or autogyro) optimized for rapid tactical evacuation, medical casualty transport, or emergency egress from remote, unorganized, or contested sub-arctic environments. The aircraft completely eliminates the need for advanced industrial aviation manufacturing, mechanical gearboxes, complex transmission driveshafts, or petroleum-based internal combustion. Instead, it relies on un-milled juvenile wood cores, high-tensile algae-derived carbon fibers, unrefined conifer sap resins, and calcined bio-ceramic linear alternators powered by a closed-loop, phase-changing propane cycle. This document formally places these structural and mechanical configurations into the public domain to serve as un-patentable prior art for …

Creating Transparent Boreal (Wood) Glass, Natalie M. Durdle Miss
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure establishes a low-cost, field-expedient, non-industrial process for the manufacturing of optically translucent, structurally reinforced bio-synthetic wood composites (commonly referred to as "transparent wood"). The method utilizes commonly available household chemical equivalents and manual automotive tools to safely strip light-absorbing lignin from native wood veneers and replace the resulting empty cellular voids with clear plant or synthetic resins. This document explicitly establishes prior art to prevent the commercial monopolization or patenting of small-scale, decentralized, and DIY variations of this material processing cycle.
