The Use Of The Calculator In The Junior High Mathematics Curriculum, Janice Warner May 1980

The Use Of The Calculator In The Junior High Mathematics Curriculum, Janice Warner

Theses

This study explores the impact of handheld calculator use on student achievement in middle school mathematics, with a focus on seventh-grade instruction in decimal algorithms. Conducted at Wentzville Junior High School, the research involved a three-week instructional unit on decimals taught to two groups of seventh-grade students—one using calculators and the other employing traditional paper-and-pencil methods. Pretests and posttests were administered to measure student performance, while classroom observations and teacher feedback were used to assess engagement and problem-solving strategies.

The findings indicate that the use of calculators improved student accuracy and efficiency in computation without diminishing conceptual understanding. Students with …

Spatial Filtering Of A Projection Printer, Using Partially Coherent Light, Leon Vlahakes May 1980

Spatial Filtering Of A Projection Printer, Using Partially Coherent Light, Leon Vlahakes

Theses

This investigation applied the technique of spatial filtering to a projection printer utilizing partially coherent illumination. The affect of filtering on image quality parameters such as resolution, edge gradient and MTF were determined for a black and white film. Edge gradient analysis was used to derive MTF data from sampled edges. A source diameter of 3 mm and spatial filter diameters of .6, 2.2, and 3.0 mm were used. Spatial filtering was seen to have a drastic affect on edge gradient and MTF. Increasing the filter diameter resulted in a decrease of cutoff frequency of the system. Spatial filtering had …

Modification Of An Automatic Photographic Exposure System, To Correct For Light Source Color-Temperature Variation, Jay Agular May 1980

Modification Of An Automatic Photographic Exposure System, To Correct For Light Source Color-Temperature Variation, Jay Agular

Theses

An attempt was made to correct the spectral sensitivity of a silicon photodiode, by using optical filters, to match the spectral sensitivity of Kodalith ortho film, type 3, 2556, and Kodalith pan film, 2568, respectively. The correction would allow the diode to be used with a light-integrator and light source of varying spectral power distribution, when these films are used. A Corning 978 2 blue/green filter was used for the ortho film and an O.C.L.I. detector trimmer, was used for the pan film. Through experimentation and statistical analysis, it was found that there was 100% correction of the photodiode spectral …

Agn03 And Kbr Reagent Concentrations' Effect On Double-Jet Emulsion Grain Size Dispersity, Daniel D. Siems

Theses

Four levels of AgN03 and KBr reagent concentrations between 0.1N and 1.0N were used to study the effect of changing reagent concentration on the grain size dispersity of a primitive AgBr double-jet emulsion. The emulsions were precipitated in a continuous flow crystalizer at a constant pAg of 8.5 within the crystalizer. Emulsion samples were collected at 5 minute intervals during the make from the crystalizer and used to obtain grain size frequency distribution data. Through the use of multivariate analysis of variance, it was concluded with 95% confidence that AgNOo and KBr reagent concentrations ranging from 0.1N to 1 .ON …

A Tone Reproduction Study Of A Digital Image Processing System, Gerald Kashtan May 1980

A Tone Reproduction Study Of A Digital Image Processing System, Gerald Kashtan

Theses

Photographic tone reproduction analysis was applied to a digital image processing system (DIPS) . The problem was to calculate computer mapping functions for the DIPS that would cause input scenes to be reproduced having Clark's tone reproduction characteristics. Using the graphical method of a Jones Diagram, unique computer mapping functions were constructed for four images processed by the DIPS. After processing the imagery in the computer, the pixels were reconstructed into photographic transparencies for projection in a specially designed projection area. The results of this work concluded that tone reproduction analysis is useful in studying the macro effect of luminance …

An Investigation On The Applicability Of Multi-Microprocessing In The Two Dimensional Digital Filtering Problem, Timothy J. Whitcher May 1980

An Investigation On The Applicability Of Multi-Microprocessing In The Two Dimensional Digital Filtering Problem, Timothy J. Whitcher

Theses

Digital image processing has been receiving an increasing amount of development in recent years, largely because high speed digital com puters are becoming readily available. In addition, the advent of the microprocessor has revolutionized the capabilities of compact electronic systems. This thesis examines the applicability of microprocessors to digital image processing. Using a Z8000 microprocessor as a baseline, the computation time for a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform is estimated for various microprocessor architectures. These results are later compared to the manufacturer's specified computation times on a Floating Point. Systems AP-120B Array Processor.

Comparison Of The Derivative-Transform Edge Gradient Analysis Technique To Tatian's Method Of Edge Gradient Analysis, Varying Random Noise, Truncation Interval And Sampling Internal On Analytical Edges, Robert Laflesh May 1980

Comparison Of The Derivative-Transform Edge Gradient Analysis Technique To Tatian's Method Of Edge Gradient Analysis, Varying Random Noise, Truncation Interval And Sampling Internal On Analytical Edges, Robert Laflesh

Theses

The following work has been computer simulated. A cumulative gaussian step response and the step response of a photographic emulsion 1 were taken through the derivative-transform edge gradient analysis technique and Tatian's method of analysis. Random noise levels, truncation intervals and sampling intervals on the analytic edges were varied to determine their influence on each technique. The variance and means of the calculated m.T.F.s were then statistically tested for no difference of the two techniques. The exact noise free M.T.F. was also calculated and compared to the M.T.F.s calculated by the two techniques. The results show a statistical difference in …

The Verification Of An Optical System Design For A Low Frequency Mtf Camera, Edwin B. Hoel May 1980

The Verification Of An Optical System Design For A Low Frequency Mtf Camera, Edwin B. Hoel

Theses

A proposed low frequency MTF camera system uses a cylinder lens to smear an area-modulated sinusoidal target into an irradiance-modulated sinusoidal image for the evaluation of a film's modulation transfer characteristics. The proposed system was constructed and evaluated. Resolution limits, field flatness, field sharpness, repeatability, de focus effects and system MTF were determined. The camera was tested with film and found to have an MTF value close to 1.0 for frequencies up to 10 cycles/mm at which point the function dropped off to a value of 0.2 at 30 cycles/mm. Off-axis images showed rapid degredation as a maximum MTF value …

Halftone Dot Method For Image Evaluation Of High-Resolution Films Applied To Vesicular Film, Mark Gulden Apr 1980

Halftone Dot Method For Image Evaluation Of High-Resolution Films Applied To Vesicular Film, Mark Gulden

Theses

A feasible technique for deriving the spread function and modulation transfer function of a vesicular film has been determined. This technique is based on a method described by R. Byer which does not require the use of a microdensitometer, but only that of a "macro" densitometer. The method utilizes the fact that a halftone dot will change in size as a function of exposure. The spread function of the vesicular film was approximated with a mathematical model. The results, although favorable in many ways, are not conclusive. Some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with this technique as applied to …

Theses

The control system described in this thesis is a low cost system designed to control the speed of an electric vehicle by adjusting the speed of a compound wound DC motor. The speed control method developed in this system is a combination of battery tapping, for control of the armature voltage, and pulse width modulation for field control; both generated by a microprocessor. Using a microprocessor, the control system is readily adaptable to a variety of motor voltages and motor control techniques by modifying the internal firmware of the processor. Overcurrent protection is included to prolong battery and motor life. …

A Colorimetric Investigation Of Color Tolerances, Scott Stamm Jan 1980

A Colorimetric Investigation Of Color Tolerances, Scott Stamm

Theses

The study was conducted to determine the relationships between a standard color and its visually chosen limits. Commonly, limits or tolerances are communicated to printers using an Allen Tolerance Chart. The Allen Chart, used extensively by package printers, provides a standard of the color to be reproduced along with corresponding light and dark limits. A second form of tolerance chart, used by printers of U. S. Department of Transportation hazardous materials warning labels, provides limits for colors three dimensionally. Both types of tolerance charts were used in this study. Three Department of Transportation tolerance charts were measured spectrophotometrically producing a …

Adsorption Capabilities Of Adsorbents For Selected Toxic Air Pollutants, Richard Michael Vaccaro Oct 1979

Adsorption Capabilities Of Adsorbents For Selected Toxic Air Pollutants, Richard Michael Vaccaro

Theses

The relative adsorption capacities of seven toxic, volatile organic air pollutants of either proven or suspected carcinogenic potential were tested on various adsorbents. Tests were run at flow velocities similar to those set in field sampling. This allows for extrapolation of test results to actual ambient air sampling systems. Experimentation was performed using a gas chromatograph (G.C.) equipped with a flame ionization detector. Sample introduction was carried out using the "displacement method" where the sample is introduced to the adsorbent cartridge as a plug.

Incipient elution volumes (VN), normalized for bulk adsorbent packing volume, were obtained at various …

Studies On The Lith Development Of A Silver Iodobromide Emulsion, Larry Zurbrick Oct 1979

Studies On The Lith Development Of A Silver Iodobromide Emulsion, Larry Zurbrick

Theses

The lithographic development of a silver iodobromide emulsion with thiocyanate substituted for bromide in a lith developer formulation showed differences in behavior with regard to induction time and maximum rate of development at equal levels of normality. An experiment was designed with development time, halide concentration, and exposure level as the variables with maximum rate of development, time to reach 0.20 optical density (induction time), and slope at 0.40 optical density as the response parameters. The maximum rate of development with the developer containing bromide was found to be significantly dependent upon exposure level and not significantly dependent upon bromide …

The research design will be experimental, using the classroom situation and primary students. The …

The Modification Of Simple Images By Fourier Transform Manipulation, Noel Chavez Jun 1979

The Modification Of Simple Images By Fourier Transform Manipulation, Noel Chavez

Theses

Knowledge of how an image is changed by a given modification of its Fourier transform is important when attempting to find solutions to problems in image processing. Several types of filters were used to modify the Fourier transforms of an edge and a bartarget. The images were reconstructed from the modified transforms to determine the change produced by a given modification. Various regions of the Fourier transform determine specific characteristics of the image. The amplitude of the low frequencies controls the form and average level of the image, while the amplitude of the high frequencies effects sharp transitions and noise.

Determination Of The Chemical Spread Function Of Kodak High Contrast Copy 5069 Emulsion, J.N.A. Laitre Jun 1979

Determination Of The Chemical Spread Function Of Kodak High Contrast Copy 5069 Emulsion, J.N.A. Laitre

Theses

A new procedure for obtaining the Chemical Spread Function of an emulsion-developer combination is discussed. This procedure consists of directly measuring the Optical Modulation Transfer Function (MTFO) by scanning the sinusoidal object irradiance distribution through the non-developed emulsion using a microdensitometer. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the processed emulsion is determined in the conventional manner. Then the Chemical Modulation Transfer Function (MTFC) is determined from the linear relationship: MTF = MTFC X MTFO. Once the MTFO is determined then the Spread Function is calculated using the Fourier Transform operator. Photographic systems are in general non-linear. However it is well …

Design Considerations In Linear Microdensitometry, Thomas Lianza Jun 1979

Design Considerations In Linear Microdensitometry, Thomas Lianza

Theses

The conditions for linearity in microdensitometry are discussed. It is shown that under proper conditions a microdensitometer may behave linearly regardless of the coherence properties of the source. A linear microdensitometer was constructed and design considerations are presented as well as test results.

Crown Ether Complexes Of Lanthanide Elements And Their Applications As Lanthanide Shift Reagents, Dale Decann Jun 1979

Crown Ether Complexes Of Lanthanide Elements And Their Applications As Lanthanide Shift Reagents, Dale Decann

Theses

A complex of the lanthanide salt, praseodymium nitrate, and the crown ether, 15-crown-5 has been isolated. The characterization of this complex by elemental analysis, melting point, H and C NMR, UV-visible and IR has indicated that the isolable solid compound is a 1:1 stoichiometric complex of the two reactants and is unsolvated. The application of this complex as a lanthanide shift reagent does not appear to be very feasible due to its insolubility in the non-polar solvents typically used in NMR experiments. Studies of the shifting ability of this complex as well as an inves tigation of the shifting ability …

The Effects Of Sulfur Sensitization And Stabilization By 4-Hydroxy-6-Methyl-1,3,3a,7-Tetraazaindene On Hydrogen Sensitization Of A Photographic Emulsion, David Lyon Jun 1979

The Effects Of Sulfur Sensitization And Stabilization By 4-Hydroxy-6-Methyl-1,3,3a,7-Tetraazaindene On Hydrogen Sensitization Of A Photographic Emulsion, David Lyon

Theses

Hypersensitization using H2 gas is the most recent addition to the techniques available to reduce the effects of low intensity reciprocity law failure. Because of the presence of addenda in all commercially available emulsions, the interactive effects of hydrogen sensitization with a common stabilizer (4-methyl-6-hydroxy-1,3,3a,7-tetraazaindene) and a common form of chemical sensitization (Sulfur Sensitization) alone and together were investigated. A primitive, single jet emulsion was coated with and without the above addenda. Samples were paired and either treated to a hydrogen baking process at 65°C for 20 minutes, or left untreated. Sensitometric exposures were made in a room air environment …

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter May 1979

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter

Theses

A mathematical model describing the displayed selectivity of the kidney nephron to macromolecules of varying particle size is presented. Diffusion and electrical forces are considered to be the sole mechanisms of transfer. The mass transfer principles responsible for selectivity are considered to occur within the capillary structure, and not within the membrane wall. A charge is assumed to be characteristic of the macromolecule and the membrane wall. Models describing both charged and uncharged solutes are developed.

A non-linear least squares technique, developed by Marquardt, is used to curve fit the derived functions to data relating fractional clearances of dextran and …

Calculations Of Isobaric Phase Enthalpy Differences For Binary Systems From Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Steven Merrill Harvey May 1979

Calculations Of Isobaric Phase Enthalpy Differences For Binary Systems From Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Steven Merrill Harvey

Theses

Equations relating isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium data to heats of vaporization are useful in testing the thermodynamic consistency of experimental VLE data and in the design of distillation equipment. Several researchers have proposed such equations based on the Gibbs-Duhem equation. At low pressures, simplified versions of these equations were successfully used to test the consistency of published VLE and enthalpy data. At high pressures, equilibrium phase enthalpy differences were calculated from rigorous equations using a modified form of the Redlich-Kwong equation to calculate fugacity coefficients. As expected, the relative error of using the simplified equations was found to increase with increasing …
