Modification, Reimplementation And Studies Using The Meisner Model Of The Heart, Ari Zvi Zivotofsky Aug 1992

Modification, Reimplementation And Studies Using The Meisner Model Of The Heart, Ari Zvi Zivotofsky

Theses

The study of left ventricular filling in both the normal and the pathological heart is of great importance. A computer model simulation of the heart with emphasis on mitral flow was designed by Meisner in 1986 and implemented in QuickBASIC. This paper discusses how the original program was altered to be able to perform "Parameter vs. Parameter" runs in which it can be observed how varying an input parameter affects output parameters. The output data is then formatted in such a way that it can be used by QUATTRO PRO, a standard spreadsheet package, to yield graphical outputs.

Integrating Computer Generated Animation And Videography, Annemaria Incorvia Aug 1992

Integrating Computer Generated Animation And Videography, Annemaria Incorvia

Theses

This thesis developed as a personal exploration in the compositing effects of computer generated imagery, traditional cel animation, and videography. Through trial, great error, and much modification, this collaboration evolved. As a product of transition and progression, it can be said, it echoes the absolute design process. In order to create a visually aesthetic ensemble while incorporating several techniques, each exploration was to support the whole in its depiction. Personal aesthetics and technical limitations determined the inclusion or abstraction of any particular approach, and to what degree, if any, that it would be used, modified or manipulated. Finally, these decisions …

Biomechanics Of Corneal Wound Healing, James Charles Ramier Aug 1992

Biomechanics Of Corneal Wound Healing, James Charles Ramier

Theses

The re-establishment of tissue continuity, function, and mechanical proper ties after a through-and-through incision is an important issue in corneal surgery and trauma. Variations in healing can affect vision and patient activity during the recovery period, which may last up to five years. Growth factors introduced into the open wound have the potential to speed up the wound-healing process. The current investigation is concerned with quantitatively characterizing the mechanical properties of corneal tissue and evaluating the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) on accelerating the wound-healing process as compared to a …

The Use Of Henry's Law Constants In The Determination Of Factors That Influence Voc Concentration In Aqueous And Gaseous Phases In Wastewater Treatment Plant, Hui-Zhi Yu May 1992

The Use Of Henry's Law Constants In The Determination Of Factors That Influence Voc Concentration In Aqueous And Gaseous Phases In Wastewater Treatment Plant, Hui-Zhi Yu

Theses

This study focuses on the determination and comparison of Henry's law constant of eight selected volatile organic compounds in the wastewater of Linden Roselle Sewerage Authority (LRSA) wastewater treatment plant. The factors that influence the vapor-aqueous equilibrium were studied by calculating the Henry's law constants of the different species determined in the gas phase before and after the spiking of different aqueous media. Both centrifuged and uncentrifuged wastewater samples were studied, and compared to distilled water.

For wastewater sample with no suspended particles, the amount of organics in wastewater appears to influence the Henry's law constant for compounds with low …

Disinfection Of Wastewater Using Ultraviolet Radiation, David L. Klemm May 1992

Disinfection Of Wastewater Using Ultraviolet Radiation, David L. Klemm

Theses

The disadvantages associated with the use of chlorine for disinfection, in conjunction with improvements in ultraviolet radiation disinfection technologies have led to the recent increased use of ultraviolet radiation to provide disinfection of effluents from wastewater treatment plants. The theory of ultraviolet radiation and the engineering design of the ultraviolet disinfection system are discussed in depth.

The operational history and records of two wastewater treatment plants that use ultraviolet radiation for disinfection were analyzed in an attempt to develop correlations on the factors that affect ultraviolet radiation disinfection efficiency and to investigate as to whether disinfection with ultraviolet radiation is …

Effect Of 2,3-Butanedione Monoxide On Whole-Cell Potassium Channel Currents In Rat Single Myocytes, Youliang Zhou May 1992

Effect Of 2,3-Butanedione Monoxide On Whole-Cell Potassium Channel Currents In Rat Single Myocytes, Youliang Zhou

Theses

The patch clamp technique is a simple procedure which can isolate ion channels on cell membranes. Our previous data have shown that 2,3-Butanedione Monoxime (BDM) could inhibit the calcium current by dephosphorylation of the channel. In this study, the effect of BDM on the potassium channels were investigated with the whole-cell recording method in single myocytes enzymatically isolated from the left ventricle of 3-4 months old rats. Superfusion of myocytes with BDM elicited a dose dependent decrease of the outward transient potassium current. BDM with concentrations of 5, 20 and 50 mM reduced the maximal peak potassium current by 7.3 …

Kinetic Measuremenmt Of Decomposition Of Aniline, 2,4-Dichlorophenol And 1,2,4-Trichlorophenol Using A Calorimetric Method, Ming-Chin Chang

Theses

Biological treatment techniques for detoxification of toxic organic compounds have been studied and applied for many years. There are many research and commercial applications proving that the biological method is more economic and efficient than the other treatment methods.

The traditional biomass measurements are time-consuming tasks. Researchers have intended to develop a simpler, faster, and also accurate method for determining the bioactivity. This study has tried to use the microcalorimetric method to monitor the energy productions from the degradation of aniline, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene. Thereafter, by utilizing the data obtained from the present study, it was possible to compute kinetic …

Evaluating The Homogeneity Of Solidification/Stabilization Treated Waste Soils By Chemical Analysis Method, Mei Liu May 1992

Evaluating The Homogeneity Of Solidification/Stabilization Treated Waste Soils By Chemical Analysis Method, Mei Liu

Theses

Solidification/Stabilization technology has been widely used for waste treatment, especially for heavy metals, non-volatile wastes, radioactive wastes and soils. Homogeneity is a very important criterion for this kind of technology.

This study focuses on the development of a method to evaluate the homogeneity of S/S treated soil. A chemical analysis method, atomic absorbance, is employed to evaluate the distribution of S/S reagent in a soil-cement mixture and thus the uniformity of the soil-cement mixture. Also, a fluorescent tracer method is discussed in this study, which can be used to estimate the homogeneity of the soil-cement surface. The fluorescent tracer method …

Inability Of Phanerochaete Chrysosporium To Degrade Polychlorinated Biphenyls In Sand, Pankaj Pankaj May 1992

Inability Of Phanerochaete Chrysosporium To Degrade Polychlorinated Biphenyls In Sand, Pankaj Pankaj

Theses

The white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium has been previously found to successfully degrade a wide spectrum of chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (some of them in soil or sand matrices). In this research, it was tested if the fungus could also degrade a very recalcitrant class of pollutant, i.e. Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in sand at a concentration of 100 ppm (w/w PCB to sand). For this purpose, a number of experiments were performed, in which several operating parameters, such as nutrient concentrations (nitrogen and glucose), amount of initial biomass, aeration, and degree of chlorination of the PCBs were varied. The results obtained …

Design Of Stable Di And Tetraradical Nitroxides As Magnetic Resonance Imaging Agents, Radha V. Iyer May 1992

Design Of Stable Di And Tetraradical Nitroxides As Magnetic Resonance Imaging Agents, Radha V. Iyer

Theses

Several nitroxides have been prepared in the Biotechnology Laboratory at NJIT to study their image enhancement capability. These nitroxides contain different moieties within one molecule and their paramagnetism is found to be initially increasing proportionally to the number of their radical centers. It is found that the addition of nitroxides at very close distances causes interference and a reduction of intensity due to the interaction of the two paramagnetic centers with each other. Thus MRI contrast agents are not improved by simple addition of nitroxide centers to a given molecule and drug designers must pay special attention to intramolecular spacing. …

Muse As Artist: Selected Women Artists Past And Present, Jennifer R. Mantooth

Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to create an electronic book on the subject of women in the visual arts. The search for a paradigm in the design of such a "book" is currently being explored within the multimedia community of computer graphic designers. As new technology appears at an ever increasing rate, the need to disseminate information rapidly also increases. It is therefore imperative that graphic designers interject themselves into the process because it is through the designer that commmunication will flow to the prospective user. The quality of the design work will determine the quality of the communication.

Shifting Reality, Nancy Crosby

Theses

Let me begin by saying, I have been raised Catholic, and all of my life I have been influenced strongly by my beliefs. Because of my devotion to my faith, I have been bombarded by fantastic iconography and images which seem to proclaim the presence of not only an omnipotent being who reigns over all of mankind, but also, the existence of another realm or realms beyond this insignificant way station known as earth. Throughout the continual passing of time, humanity has vigorously tried to give face to the invisible manipulators who seem to influence their thoughts and actions. On …

Communications Sourcebook, Karin Vantine

Theses

In yesteryear a "Renaissance Man" represented the pinnacle of learning. He was a person who knew something about everything. Society had great respect for his diversity. Today, in our society, the "Renaissance Man" has been replaced by the specialist. It is almost impossible to be proficient in a multiple of differing fields due to the massive amounts of in-depth information, yet it is possible to be a well-rounded individual by simply taking complete advantage of the American educational system. Unfortunately, society is constantly stressing a specialization within one's own profession with a disregard for all other branches of learning. This …

Red And Green Make Yellow: An Interactive Multimedia Tutorial Designed To Teach The Basic Concepts Of Additive And Subtractive Color, Suzanne Grinnan

Theses

The division between designers and printers is becoming increasingly blurred as the capabilities of the desktop environment improve. Electronic imaging is one area where this disintegration is rapidly occurring. Abilities that were formerly the domain of the color separator, image assembler, and printer, such as scanning, color correction, and film separation, are available through many popular software programs. Unfortunately, the education required to allow the proper application of these software options is not as accessible as the tools themselves. Both printers and graphic designers will have to educate themselves about the emerging and changing technologies of the other. Eventually a …

A Guide To Computer-Based Training For The Graphic Arts Industry, David E. Pease May 1992

A Guide To Computer-Based Training For The Graphic Arts Industry, David E. Pease

Theses

Industry in the United States is facing one of the greatest hurdles of all time, that of retraining its work force. The printing industry, in particular, faces a continuing lack of experienced and knowledgeable people. It has begun cooperative efforts to retrain workers in the basic skills needed to run a printing operation. Subjects like basic math, accounting, writing, and sciences round out the curriculum. Also on the scene are entrepreneurial training firms. Off-site training typically goes for $250-350 per person per day; the on-site instruction goes for $400 and up. And then there are options like computer-based tutorials. A …
