Joel Chandler Harris: Aesop Of The South, Thomas Adams
Joel Chandler Harris: Aesop Of The South, Thomas Adams
Theses
This paper covers Joel Chandler Harris's early life and its influence on his writing, then examines the literature he created, including the Uncle Remus stories, and interpretations of his work.

Urea Adduction Of Oleic Acid, Leroy A. Dahm
Urea Adduction Of Oleic Acid, Leroy A. Dahm
Theses
The purpose of this project was to study the separation of the fatty acids and waxes found in cranberry skins by means of the formation of urea adducts. Current literature does not indicate equilibrium and rate data as controlled by mixing energy for the separation. Therefore this rate data was determined for the adduct formation of oleic acid, one of the constituents of cranberry skins.
A saturated aqueous solution of urea was used in the preparation of the urea adduct of oleic acid. Methyl isobutyl ketone and methanol were investigated as solvents for the fatty acids. Methyl isobutyl ketone was …

Ceramic Murals, Candeger Furtun
Theses
In my Thesis I propose to study the Ceramic Murals at its beginning and at the present Age. Since it is a very wide and long topic to be handled by one person within a limited time, I shall confine myself to the first attempts of Mankind in the making of Murals in clay in Prehistoric times, in Mesopotamia and murals that are done very recently , mainly in the United States.
Behavior Change Through Training, Robert Walter Messerschmidt
Behavior Change Through Training, Robert Walter Messerschmidt
Theses
This thesis represents an investigation of attitude and behavior change as a result of human relations training, The elements of heredity and environment are proffered as a basis for attitude and behavior formation. It is denoted that these elements are also instrumental in subsequent development of adult behavior.
As noted in the literature, the term "individual differences" embodies the effect of virtually unique heredity and environmental conditions to which each person is exposed. These differences are also partly determined by the growth in developmental trends, which varies from individual to individual and from time to time.
The existence of individual …

The Use Of Perlite As An Adsorbent, John Herrick Eigler
The Use Of Perlite As An Adsorbent, John Herrick Eigler
Theses
The adsorptive properties of perlite, an expanded volcanic glass, have been studied. Several activating treatments were investigated, air oxidation it 400 degrees Centigrade appears to be the best, The adsorption of the basic dye emethylene blue yields a saturation valve of 50 milligrams per gram of perlite. The acid dye cotton blue showed no measurable adsorption. A maximum adsorption of 15 millimoles of acetic acid and one milligram of iodine were found in aqueous solution. A high value of 1.33 milligrams of iodine per gram of perlite were found in methyl alcohol solutions. The surface area of perlite appears to …
The Preparation Of 3,4-Diaminopyridine, Emil John Fencl
The Preparation Of 3,4-Diaminopyridine, Emil John Fencl
Theses
The preparation of 3,4-diamincpyridine from pyridine was investigated, but found to be of little synthetic value because of the low yield obtained on the rearrangement of 4-nitraminopyridine to 3-nitro 4-aminopyridine. In attempt to nitrate nicotinamide-N-oxide resulted in the isolation of nicotinic acid-N-oxide. Attempts to nitrate nicotinic acid-N-oxide were unsuccessful. Attempts to oxidize 3-methylpyridine-N-oxide and 4-nitro-3-methylpyridine were unsuccessful. The nitration of 3-methylpyridine-N-oxide led to the isolation of 2-nitro-5-methylpyridine, which has not previously been reported as a by-product of that reaction.
Composting Coffee Waste, Lawrence James Hickey
Composting Coffee Waste, Lawrence James Hickey
Theses
Disposal of waste, and specifically organic waste, has become a serious problem in such industries as the canning, meat-packing, dairy and other food producing industries. Recently, with the introduction of instant coffee powder, this particular industry now has a waste disposal problem with the resultant coffee residue. Composting or biologically decomposing this waste to yield an organic fertilizer is one of the many ways to solve this problem.
There are no papers in the literature concerning composting of coffee waste and only one paper (65) is available covering studies of high rate composting of garbage and refuse. It is known …
Use Of Liquid Sulfur Trioxide As A Sulfonating Agent For Organic Compounds, Herman Gustav Weiland
Use Of Liquid Sulfur Trioxide As A Sulfonating Agent For Organic Compounds, Herman Gustav Weiland
Theses
Dodecylbenzene was sulfonated with SO3 and evaluated as to ash, sodium sulfate, degree of sulfonation, and was also compared with an oleum sulfonation. Its homolog, octadecylbenzene, was made, sulfonated, and found to be less effective as a wetting agent.
Two-ethylhexyl cinnamate, oleic acid, and propyloleate were also sulfonated with good yields and evaluated.
Yields in the sulfonation of Di-2-ethylhexyl maleate were very low. There was evidence of the SO3 splitting the ester and oxidising it to maleic acid.
The reduction of 9-octadecenophenone, according to Clemmenson's Method, led to the formation of a polymer.
A Study Of A Synthesis Of Indole, Stephen Scala
A Study Of A Synthesis Of Indole, Stephen Scala
Theses
Chemical literature abounds with methods for the synthesis of Indole and its derivatives. Undoubtedly, this is so, because Indole is the parent substance of the historical dyestuff Indigo. This coloring material has been the subject of extensive investigations for many centuries. Early in this century, importance was still placed on Indole Chemistry, but it later gore way to other dyestuffs having different chemical structures. It seems, however, the loss in popularity was to have been short-lived, because of the revitalized interest shown in the chemistry of Indoles since the early 1930's.
It was found that a great number of alkaloids …
Ultrafiltration In The Pigment Field : A Critical Literature Survey, Charles Walter Manger
Ultrafiltration In The Pigment Field : A Critical Literature Survey, Charles Walter Manger
Theses
The objective in this work has been to determine, through a critical literature survey, the possible application of ultrafiltration, and other related techniques, towards the solution of certain problems encountered in the research and testing of various pigments.
Among these problems may be mentioned the following:
- The determination of water-soluble salts in pigments, which when dispersed in water to leach out the salts, tend to peptize, thus being unfilterable through the usual filter paper. Among these pigments are the following: iron blue, certain chrome yellows, pigment green B, copper maroon, and several others. It may be added that these pigments …
Waterfront Construction In New York Harbor, Carman William Garrison
Waterfront Construction In New York Harbor, Carman William Garrison
Theses
The following chapters are devoted to the various phases of that branch of construction which is followed from the offshore side of the waterfront. This branch, in the parlance of the building trades, is known as dockbuilding. Years ago all waterfront structures in New York Harbor were constructed almost entirely of timber and experience taught that the most economical approach for building docks and wharves was made by utilizing floating piledrivers and derricks. Thus it happened that dockbuilders became skilled both in the use of wood framing tools and in handling marine equipment. Modern dockbuilders must have, in addition to …
Piles And Pile Driving, Robert W. Van Houten
Piles And Pile Driving, Robert W. Van Houten
Theses
This thesis on the subject of "Piles and Pile Driving" has been written to fulfill one of the requirements for the granting of the degree of Civil Engineer by the Newark College of Engineering. The material contained in this thesis has been gleaned from many books, catalogs, magazines and from the author's own experience. Much still needs to be accomplished in the field of research but this can be done only through the cooperation of the companies who are engaged in this work and have the equipment necessary for making many tests under actual field conditions.
The author wishes to …
