Spectral Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability: Acquisitionalysis Software Development, David James Delong May 1992

Spectral Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability: Acquisitionalysis Software Development, David James Delong

Theses

This work develops an acquisitionalysis software application to investigate the spectral content of the heart rate variability signal derived from an electrocardiographic (EKG) waveform. The location and strength of the frequency content reveals general information concerning sympathetic and parasympathetic activity within the autonomic nervous system of the study subject. Current investigations into pediatric head trauma patients have revealed specific correlations between spectral content of the heart rate variability and overall patient recovery. The levels of serum catecholamines, specifically epinephrine and norepinephrine, are also investigated for a possible correlation with both trauma severity and spectral power of the heart rate variability …

Set Design For A Raisin In The Sun, Laura S. Gygi-Gamble

Theses

My husband and I chose to go to Walt Disney World for our honeymoon, because of his interest in animation. When we arrived the world that surrounded us was fascinating. It was amazing and strange how, for the time we were there, this fantasy land became a form of reality for us. While at Walt Disney World, I became very interested in set design. The environments created within Disney World allowed one to be entertained and amused, while traveling through dream lands. Being able to design with this kind of playfulness is very stimulating to me. Upon returning home from …

Practical Application Of Modal Analysis Techniques, James Perconti Mar 1992

Practical Application Of Modal Analysis Techniques, James Perconti

Theses

A procedure is presented for applying modern modal analysis tools in the area of structural dynamic design and analysis for the purpose of minimizing the required development time necessary to bring a product to the marketplace. Development time is minimized by reducing the number of design, build, and test iterations required to bring a product concept into production. This is done by using available modal analysis tools in a coordinated manor to generate a good understanding of the behavior of the design in the first development iteration. The finite element method and experimental modal analysis are used for design optimization …

The Design And Construction Of A Hang Glider Flight Simulator, Kim L. Sherman Feb 1992

The Design And Construction Of A Hang Glider Flight Simulator, Kim L. Sherman

Theses

Hang gliding is probably the closest a person can come to experiencing bird-like flight. Unfortunately, the precise skills needed to fly a hang glider are difficult to teach through demonstration or verbal instruction. Consequently, many people's first few flights are awkward and sometimes dangerous. A hang gliding student's first flight is a solo flight, so control errors are understandable. However, every effort must be made to minimize these errors.

Validation Of Dirsig, An Infrared Synthetic Scene Generation Model, Donna D. Rankin Feb 1992

Validation Of Dirsig, An Infrared Synthetic Scene Generation Model, Donna D. Rankin

Theses

A validation and sensitivity study was performed in which the accuracy of an infrared synthetic image generation model (DIRSIG) was examined. The majority of the error in the model is derived from two major programs: a temperature predictor and a radiative transfer model. A thermodynamic model computes kinetic temperatures of objects in a computer generated three-dimensional scene. These temperatures, atmospheric data, and sensor parameters are used as input to a ray_tracer which models the propagation of radiation in a source-target-sensor path within this scene. The output is a simulated infrared image which a sensor with the given input parameters would …

Real-Tv : Rtp/L3'S Visual Monitor, Richard Czop Jan 1992

Real-Tv : Rtp/L3'S Visual Monitor, Richard Czop

Theses

Today many real-world activities are being monitored and controlled by some type of micro-processor based system. Emphasis is placed on manufacturing and controlling through the use of computers. The inherent nature of these real-world applications makes them difficult to control and monitor. They must be built meeting strict timing constraints and must be predictable. We need to develop simplistic, reliable, and cost effective methods for building, evaluating, monitoring and controlling these complex systems. These tools should provide the user with system insight. At the New Jersey Institute of Technology Real-Time Computing Laboratory, we are building a system that will provide …

A Study Of The Human Longevity Potential And Its Manifestation In Longevous Individuals, Corliss White Jan 1992

A Study Of The Human Longevity Potential And Its Manifestation In Longevous Individuals, Corliss White

Theses

This study examines the present state of aging and longevity research as it applies to longevous elderly, those who reach their 10th and 11th decade of life. Their numbers, if not percentages, have risen considerably in the growing elderly population, The difference between the longevous and other elderly persons is not just one of degree, but of kind. Each of them is a living biological prototype of the human potential to live an extended life span without significant loss of vitality.

Many past studies of longevous population have been marred by inaccurate claims based on unreliable data. Beyond that, researchers …

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich Jan 1992

The Effects Of Prenatal Care On Infant Mortality In The United States, Barbara A. Dieterich

Theses

This thesis will focus on the causes of infant mortality in the United States. The lack of adequate prenatal care will be specifically addressed.

Research has attributed the majority of preventable infant deaths to socio-economic factors as opposed to the lack of technology. Since the percentage of the United States GNP spent on medical care continues to rise without subsequent decreases in infant deaths, it becomes necessary to focus on causal relationship.

Since a nation's infant mortality rate has long been viewed as an indicator of the country's effectiveness in meeting health needs, many areas must be targeted. The importance …

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers Jan 1992

Caregiver Education Program, Lesli Demers

Theses

Alzheimer's Disease is a progressive, irreversible disease of the brain. It is not a normal or inevitable result of the aging process. However, as more people live to advanced age, the susceptible population will increase, as will the number of people afflicted with this disease. Alzheimer's Disease presents a challenge by taking away the patient's ability to remember, as well as the ability to learn.

Alzheimer's Disease has been characterized by many professionals as "the thief of minds" (Gewertz 23). Memories of life experiences and even one's own family members fade away leaving the person a stranger to those who …

The Disinhabited Body: A Somatic View Of Personality Development And Psychotherapy, Mecca Antonia Burns Jan 1992

The Disinhabited Body: A Somatic View Of Personality Development And Psychotherapy, Mecca Antonia Burns

Theses

The body's role in personality development. and psychotherapy :is investigated. The "mind/body split" which pervades our culture prevents us from fully experiencing bodily sensation.

This phenomenon is deeply rooted in the psychophysical dualism postulated by Descartes, and chapter one inquires into the reasons why his theories took hold so firmly. There is a prevailing tendency to treat mind and body as separate entities, and I examine the reasons for this. The emotions appear to be a link between body and mind, but this is specifically where resistance can enter in.

In chapter two, we look at the process in terms …

The Controversy Of Sex In Advertising, Tammy Bankhead Wright Jan 1992

The Controversy Of Sex In Advertising, Tammy Bankhead Wright

Theses

Advertising has been highly criticized due to its power to influence people's attitudes and actions. Advertising is the nonpersonal communication of information, usually paid for and persuasive in nature, about products, services or ideas of identified sponsors through various media.

The main idea that will be developed in this culminating project is the fact that although sex in advertising is a part of our culture and society, as a communications device, the use of sex in advertising is not always effective and does not sell most products.

There will be no actual debate to determine what amount of sex in …

A Simplified Drive-Reinforcement Model For Unsupervised Learning In Artificial Neural Networks, David B. Suits Jan 1992

A Simplified Drive-Reinforcement Model For Unsupervised Learning In Artificial Neural Networks, David B. Suits

Theses

Partly in response to the apparent limitations of explicit symbol processing used by traditional artificial intelligence research, there has been, within the last decade, a growing interest in artificial neural networks. This thesis focuses on the development and testing of a model for describing certain kinds of biological phenomena. The many artificial neural networks available may be classified into three types: (1) self-organizing networks, which have input but no feedback; (2) unsupervised networks, requiring minimal feedback (perhaps a signal indicating success or failure); and (3) supervised models, which employ far more extensive (and, I think, biologically implausible) feedback mechanisms. In …

Senior Japanese Tourists To Taiwan And Their Marketing Potential: A Case Study, Nai-Chieh Jessie Chen Jan 1992

Senior Japanese Tourists To Taiwan And Their Marketing Potential: A Case Study, Nai-Chieh Jessie Chen

Theses

For decades, Taiwan's tourism industry enjoyed the great number of Japanese visitors until a few years ago, when the growth rate slowed and even declined. This decline was caused by several factors such as rising price, high appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar, inconvenient visa application procedures, limited airline seats, rising public disorder, and strong competition from neighboring countries. With much money to spend the Japanese tourists were the most welcome group to the world tourism industry. The senior (50 years and older) members among them, in increasing quantity and good financial ability, have become even more desirable among the …

Editing Digital Audio Using A Perceptual Model, J. Mark Goode Dec 1991

Editing Digital Audio Using A Perceptual Model, J. Mark Goode

Theses

In this paper we describe an intelligent system used to aid an audio recording producer in the selection of edit points in a musical sequence. It is possible to make meaningful recommendations concerning auditory input data without the ability to fully classify that data or interpret all outside goals. Perceptual modeling of the auditory input can allow sufficient reasoning ability for an intelligent system to be of use editing digital audio. To create a perceptual model, the information which can be extracted by the ear is embodied in several expert sections which communicate with a rule based decision maker via …

A Case Study On Petri Net Modeling, Animation, And Simulation, Suresh C. Gurala Dec 1991

A Case Study On Petri Net Modeling, Animation, And Simulation, Suresh C. Gurala

Theses

Petri nets as a graphical tool has developed over the last decade into a suitable model for representing, modeling, designing, analyzing and studying concurrent systems. In this thesis, Petri nets are applied for analyzing, modeling and simulation of a flexible assembly station. An existing AT&T FWS200 flexible assembly workstation for printed circuit board is modeled using Petri nets without the consideration of insertion failures and other abnormalities in the system. The Petri net model is then simulated using Graphics simulation language (GSL).

Temperature Regulation Post Hemorrhagic Shock In Rats : Atheoretical Analysis, Kahambwe Shungu Dec 1991

Temperature Regulation Post Hemorrhagic Shock In Rats : Atheoretical Analysis, Kahambwe Shungu

Theses

The adequacy of a mathematical model in simulating temperature regulation in rats after resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock is investigated. This model, proposed elsewhere, was devised to study temperature profiles during hyperthermia in humans.

Hemorrhagic shock was achieved by bleeding rats to an average mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 30mmHg. The rats were then maintained at this MAP for up to four hours by withdrawing or reinfusing the shed blood. One group (the control group), was allowed to return to normal body temperature after the shock episode without external intervention. A second group (microwave group) was irradiated, for an average of …

Image Deblurring For Visualization Of Coronary Microcirculation, Kaijun Wang Dec 1991

Image Deblurring For Visualization Of Coronary Microcirculation, Kaijun Wang

Theses

Blurred images of the rat coronary microcirculation have been obtained and processed. Heart motion, blood flow and noise cause the blur of the images. The objective of this thesis work was to study the effects of these factors on image quality and assess several models for image deblurring. The Wiener Filter and the Powei Spectrum Equalization Filter were implemented and were added to the existing image processing software. The images obtained after the application of these filters showed significant improvement over the original blurred images.
