The Illusion Of Emergency And The Future Of Cultural Studies: Thirty Years Of Cultural Studies And Cultural Criticism In Mainland China, Zhiqiang Zhou
The Illusion Of Emergency And The Future Of Cultural Studies: Thirty Years Of Cultural Studies And Cultural Criticism In Mainland China, Zhiqiang Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since 30 years ago, cultural studies in mainland China has established its own history, theoretical characteristics and framework of inquiries thanks to the introduction of Western theory, discussions of Chinese issues, and the engagement of active dialogue with international cultural studies. Chinese cultural studies started with a critical consciousness, then activated the drives of anti-authoritarianism, and generated an illusion of emergency. Today, it has outgrown the paradigm of the 1950s, and must establish new theories and thoughts on the basis of a new sense of criticism.
A Return To Gramsci: The Theoretical Origin Of Cultural Politics And The Gramsci Shift Of In Cultural Studies, Yanfeng Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the 20th century, the Western Marxism underwent an important discourse transformation from the emphasis on economic foundation and the material structure to the superstructure and cultural ideology, from class politics to cultural politics, and ultimately established the discourse paradigm of cultural politics. The theory and practice of cultural politics come from Gramsci, whose dialectical thinking on the economic basis and superstructure, as well as interpretation of culture, politics, ideology and hegemony, directly affected cultural politics of western Marxism and promoted the Gramsci shift of cultural studies in the post-Gramsci era. Based on the analysis of Gramsci's cultural and political …
The Naming Of Bronze Bells In The Shang Dynasty; The Concept System Of Yuexuan; Bronze Bells' Definition:Three Issues About The Bronze Bell, Fa Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The bronze bell in the Shang Dynasty had no name, which was why it has been called Rao (铙) by many scholars and Rong (庸) by others. From the viewpoint of the evolution of bronze bells, Rao was related more to Ling (铃) in the Xia Dynasty, and later Rao became Rong in the Shang Dynasty and finally Bianzhong (编钟) in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Thus seen, Rong was more akin to the nature of bronze bells. The concept system of Yuexuan (乐悬) consisted of three aspects: sunju (簨虡), sidu (肆堵) and gong-xuan-pante (宫-轩-判-特). The three groups of concepts were …
Tactile Culture Or Auditory Culture: A Different Future Of The Post-Visual Culture, Lianjie Liu
Tactile Culture Or Auditory Culture: A Different Future Of The Post-Visual Culture, Lianjie Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
With the continuous expansion of the hegemonic visual culture, post-visual culture has become an academic topic. Represented by Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer, phenomenology and hermeneutics turn to listening and advocate the auditory culture, but some postmodernists like Marshall Mcluhan and Jacques Derrida turn to touching and advocate tactile culture. The replacement of visual culture with auditory culture is still confined by traditional Western mindset, which is in fact a move from one extreme (despotic culture) to another extreme (submissive culture). Compared with visual culture and auditory culture, tactile culture is more self-reflexive, and less likely to become despotic, which …
The Aesthetic Regime Of Art And The Construction Of Its Politics: On Jacques Rancière's Aesthetic Thoughts, Haiting Zheng
The Aesthetic Regime Of Art And The Construction Of Its Politics: On Jacques Rancière's Aesthetic Thoughts, Haiting Zheng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Jacques Rancière is not satisfied with the two modes of modernism, namely turning art into mere life or into pure art. He endeavors to reveal the hidden tension between this binary opposition, maintaining that art should play freely within this binary tension space and make the tension space a dissensus theatre of the part of no part. The essential of aesthetic revolution of modernism lies in recognizing and receiving the previous excluded parts of literature, such as details drifted away from the integrated story, characters detached from the writer's arrangement, which challenge the given distribution of the sensible with its …
New Changes Of Confucianism During The Late Qing Dynasty And The New Novel's Imagination Of The Nation, Jun Zhu, Xun Sun
New Changes Of Confucianism During The Late Qing Dynasty And The New Novel's Imagination Of The Nation, Jun Zhu, Xun Sun
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
New Novel's imagination of the nation in the 20th century marked the beginning of modern Chinese novel as well as the narrative of a modern nation state. It was related both to the introduction of western modernity and new changes of Confucianism during the late Qing Dynasty. The convergence of the evolution theory in Gongyang studies and that in the West changed the traditional temporal and spatial structure in Chinese novels, which consequently resulted in the shift from traditional utopians to the imagination of the future "New China". While Chinese writers were introducing western political ideas by writing political novels, …
Game Impulse's Negation Of Time In Time: Temporality In Schiller's Aesthetics (Ii), Yanshun Liu
Game Impulse's Negation Of Time In Time: Temporality In Schiller's Aesthetics (Ii), Yanshun Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Temporality is the key to Schiller's aesthetics and aesthetic education, which should be elucidated. Schiller believes that temporality must be followed in order to give a clear account of the fundamental differences between the perceptual impulse and the rational impulse in terms of their composition. He argues that the game impulse, which is of narrow temporality, cannot have far foresight, that the rational impulse as maxims, ethical norms and religious gods can negate time, and that temporality is by no means a tertiary criterion independent of the other two impulses. Only in the game impulse can rationality be activated and …
The Logical Basis Of "Illocution" And The Problem Of "Intentionality": Quine's "Reducto Ad Absurdum" And The Dispute Between Wittgenstein And Kripke, Yunke Lin
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
With the introduction of analytic philosophy in general and the analysis of everyday language in particular into studies of literary theory, illocution has become a widely accepted theoretical resource therein. The ready application of this theory in literary studies without considering its evolution within analytic philosophy has caused many problems in literary theory, the most visible of which is the issue of "intentionality" contained in illocution. Searle's seminal paper "The Logical Status of Fictional Discourse" marks the involvement of analytic philosophy in studies of literary theory, but his "given intentionality" stance has become a new problem. The logical status of …
"Engaging In Literature For Life" In The Era Of Post-Revolution: The Theoretical Framework And Connotation Of Zhu Ziqing's Literary Appreciation, Cheng Luo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Previous studies have primarily recognized Zhu Ziqing's significance in modern hermeneutics of poetry, literary criticism, the establishment of literary studies as a discipline, etc; and they tend to pay much attention to the influence of Richards and Empson's semantic criticism on Zhu's methodology of appreciation. However, in the historical context of post-revolution Zhu's literary appreciation is not just for "appreciation" or "knowledge", but originates from his anxiety about the cultural and political conflicts between the new and the old. That the two literary events between him and Gu Sui and Zhu Guangqian reveal Zhu's uniqueness on his theoretical framework of …
The Influence Of Gender Theory On Women Studies And Its Debates, Chenghua Zhang
The Influence Of Gender Theory On Women Studies And Its Debates, Chenghua Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the 1970s, gender theory emerged under the influence of the research of the American psychoanalyst Robert Stoller. Scholars in women studies who rely on gender theory focused on the social construction of gender identity, elaborating on how the discourse around men and women shape masculinity and femininity, and how masculinity and femininity construct the hierarchy of men and women. Under the influence of gender theory, researchers conducted research in four areas: the analysis of symbolic images, the construction of different disciplines, the distinction of social roles and the internalization of value systems. Gender theory also prompts us to accept …
The Performativity Of Cultural Trauma And The Construction Of Trauma Discourse, Jianhui Wang
The Performativity Of Cultural Trauma And The Construction Of Trauma Discourse, Jianhui Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As literary theories, the trauma theory and the performativity theory are interrelated in that performativity is the process of trauma representation and trauma is the object of performativity. Trauma does not preexist, but becomes one. The performativity of cultural trauma is the means by which trauma discourse is constructed. Through an exploration of the performativity of cultural trauma and of the construction of trauma discourse, this article sorts out and examines the two literary theories in question and their critical paradigms.
The Riddle Of Life And Death And Its Appearance On Vase Paintings: An Interpretation Of The Essential Theme Of The Pre-Socratic Cosmological Aesthetics, Shunning Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The essential theme of Pre-Socratic cosmological aesthetics is the riddle of life and death. It shows that from the very beginning Pre-Socratic thoughts were not about the exploration into nature, but about life and death. Such a concern was conceived in Proto-Geometric and Geometric decorated pottery in the Dark ages, rather than derived from the writings of Hesiod and Homer.
The Italian Renaissance In China, Xin Gao
The Italian Renaissance In China, Xin Gao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The Italian Renaissance, as an "Other" of Chinese thoughts, has been playing an important role in helping Chinese intellectuals and scholars to reshape their subjective imagination about nations, states, arts, beliefs, values, and individuality. From the outset of Modernization, it provoked several waves of debate among Chinese artists, theorists, historians, intellectuals and scholars, respectively during the early 1930s, 1978-1980, and 2007-2008. Broadly speaking, the Chinese scholarship on the Italian Renaissance has developed in several directions. In terms of research objectives, it ranges from instrumentalist and pragmatic appropriations of Western learning, to more comprehensive, sophisticated socio-historical research and cultural studies. In …
World Literature As A Literary Space, Mengze Yao
World Literature As A Literary Space, Mengze Yao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
"World literature" has multiple meanings such as world literature as a discipline, as a pedagogical practice, or as a theoretical problem. As to the last meaning of the concept, scholars worldwide have emphasized the institution of world literature more than world literature works. This emphasis comes as a result of a rethinking of the world after the 1970s, so that the "institution" here is substantially the institution of the world. However, this "world" should not be taken as the real world, but a unique world of literature, and the essence of this institution is the more complex and more subtle …

Charles Morris's Pragmatics And The Paradigm Shift In Southern Song Landscape Painting, Lian Duan
Charles Morris's Pragmatics And The Paradigm Shift In Southern Song Landscape Painting, Lian Duan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Studying the landscape painting of the Southern Song period, this essay proposes a semiotic paradigm to examine its artistic change. The idea of this paradigm is inspired by the theory of Charles Morris, specifically, the Morrisian hypothesis about the pragmatical dimension of semiosis. From this point of view, this essay explores the inwardness of Southern Song art, and observes that, due to the change of cultural context, Chinese landscape painting in the Southern Song experienced a paradigm shift from realist representation to self-expression, which decisively re-directed the course of the mainstream in Chinese landscape painting from being external sensitive to …
On Literary Theory: Its Way Of Unveiling, Semiotic Rectangle And Absolute Deterritorialization, Jin Zhang
On Literary Theory: Its Way Of Unveiling, Semiotic Rectangle And Absolute Deterritorialization, Jin Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In the 21st century, literary study has started a self-reflection on the multiple facets of theory, thus giving rise to anti-theories, meta-theories and after-theories, all of which cast doubt on theoretical study and literary theory. However, all the facets of theory are the inherent dimensions of theory per se. The exploration of the unveiling way of theory lies in a comprehensive view and an unveiling of theory itself. The theoretical rectangle reveals the varied and interconnected connotations within theory per se. The absolute deterritorialization of theory offers a dialectical possibility among territorization, deterritorization and reterritorization. The after theory is a …
How To Study Literature With "After Theory": Focusing On Eagleton's Event Of Literature, Yan Sun
How To Study Literature With "After Theory": Focusing On Eagleton's Event Of Literature, Yan Sun
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In The Event of Literature, Terry Eagleton tries to elucidate on the literary philosophical questions pertaining to the decline of theory, and calls for a return to literature itself by breaking through the delimitations of politico-cultural studies as in post-colonialist and post-modernist criticism. However, Eagleton does not revert to pure formal research in the "after theory" period as he does not believe formalism can save literary studies. For Eagleton who has a Catholic background, the authority of new religion lies in ethical rather than aesthetic claims. What Eagleton tries to bypass the fruitless debate over essentialism and revive Aristotelian ethnical …
The Cultural Political Significance Of Form: On The Musical Practices Of The New Worker's Art Troupe, Chunlin Guo
The Cultural Political Significance Of Form: On The Musical Practices Of The New Worker's Art Troupe, Chunlin Guo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The paper examines the musical practice of the New Worker's Art Troupe from the perspective of cultural study, and focuses on the cultural political significance of forms in their practice. As a new kind of organization, the New Worker's Art Troupe purposely keeps a defiant posture to distance itself from cultural industry. They showcase many popular music works to the grass roots free of charge and their music works are usually imbued with keen sense of reality, adopting folk song's melodies and singing in dialects, and the paper observes that their musical practice is realizing the concept of "people's literature …
David Harvey's Interpretations Of Space In French Literature, Jin Liu
David Harvey's Interpretations Of Space In French Literature, Jin Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
David Harvey is one of the important figures who mingle traditions in geographic research and Marxism in the "spatial turn." His idea of space is developed in the three dimensions of ontology, modernity and art. In the dimension of art, his criticism practice of French literature centered on Paris opens a new horizon for spatial criticism of literary and cultural studies, and it also builds a new platform for realistic critical Marxist literary theory.
The Politics Of Technology: Reflections On Overseas Modern Chinese Visual Cultural Studies, Xiayun Yu
The Politics Of Technology: Reflections On Overseas Modern Chinese Visual Cultural Studies, Xiayun Yu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The dialectical relationship between words and images is an important issue of modern Chinese literary studies. Although the interpretations from the overseas, especially Rey Chow's "technologized visuality," highlight the key position of visuality in the making process of modern Chinese literature, they exaggerate the opposition between words and images, and this exaggeration implies a colonial thinking of technology which sets the relationship between China and the Western as that between the primitive and the modern through its emphasis on Western-ownership of technology. Thus, technology becomes not only a state of matter but also a structure of ideology. If the emphasis …

Rethinking Camp: From Sontag's "Notes On Camp" To Camp Films, Wensi Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Susan Sontag's 1964 article "Notes on Camp" resurfaces to the reading public with the 10th anniversary of her death. As a term, "camp" became well known during the 1960s, yet its origin can be traced to the 17th century. As a notion of taste, the camp sensibility is active in all fields of nostalgic collections, avant-garde and independent art, rock music and fashion. As a genre of subculture, camp is closely linked with the development of the queer theory, the youth movement and the politics of homosexuality. Camp appreciation can also be seen in the film industry, which provides us …
On The Idea Of Coercive Interpretation, Yang Lu
On The Idea Of Coercive Interpretation, Yang Lu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
A remarkable event in 2014 Chinese literary criticism was the concept of coercive interpretation proposed by Prof. Zhang Jiang. Coercive interpretation aimed at a theoretical summarization from Chinese perspective of the 20th-century Western mainstream literary theories, especially the various postmodern criticism since 1970s, and it could have the potentials to be Chinese discourse's intervention in the value judgment of Western literary theories. However, coercive interpretation was conceptualized out of the discursive context of and devoid of the support of literary texts. Instead, it resorted to a preset standpoint to interpret texts. This exhibits on the one hand the internal limitation …

On Visual Representation And Richard Wollheim's Concept Of Spectators' Seeing, Manting Yin
On Visual Representation And Richard Wollheim's Concept Of Spectators' Seeing, Manting Yin
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The term "representation" has been translated into two Chinese phrases "zaixian” and "biaozheng." The former refers to the direct and intuitive visual perception, while the latter focuses on the social factors which deconstruct the knowledge systems, social institutions and meaning systems. Under this context, this paper discusses the value of visual representation. The paper observes that the contemporary studies on visual perception per se accept both the validity of intuitive perceptual experience and the predetermination of visual experience by cultural systems. First put forward by Ernst Gombrich, this question was advanced by Richard Wollheim through his discourses on the spectators' …
Apocalypse Now: Walter Benjamin And The Legacy Of Political Messianism, Wolin Richard
Apocalypse Now: Walter Benjamin And The Legacy Of Political Messianism, Wolin Richard
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Walter Benjamin's essay on the "Kritik der Gewalt" (Critique of Violence) has had a curious afterlife. When it first appeared in 1921, it passed almost unnoticed. However, following the collapse of communism, among proponents of the Cultural Left it acquired a canonical salience, in large measure owing to Jacques Derrida’s systematic reliance on it in "The Force of Law: the Mystical Foundation of Political Authority" (1994). However, many of these later interpretations have overlooked the pivotal role that Benjamin's justification of "divine violence" played in his early attempts to revivify political theology, in "Kritik der Gewalt" and related texts. Finally, …

On The Interrelated Dimensions Of Materiality In Literary Criticism, Jin Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the end of 20th century, the worldwide literary criticism has turned to the study of materiality and manifested the four interrelated dimensions of literary materiality, namely, the materiality of the signifier of literary language and the material properties of texts, the materiality of literary context concerned with the limitations imposed by the social world of economics and politics, the materiality of the perceiving subject and the body through which an aesthetic experience occurs, and the materiality of the represented objects in response to which the experience takes place. The interaction of these dimensions shifts the focus in literary research …

The Landscape Sentiments As The Chinese Symbol And Expression Of An Ecological Art, Guoming Yin
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Chinese literature and arts, the sentimens in "shanshui" (mountains and waters, landscape) not only embody an aesthetic pursuit but also form a traditional cultural symbol. The sentiments display the artists’ consciousness of life and manifest the ecological connotation of "man in nature." The preposition of the landscape sentiments as a theoretical categorization may be helpful for the discovery of the universal value and new meaning of Chinese litearay theory in the context of comparative and cross-cultural studies.
