Aesthetic Analogy Between The Human Being And The Nature FromThe Book Of Poetry And Li Sao ToA New Account Of Tales Of The World, Jun Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Two modes of aesthetic analogy developed in The Book of Poetry and Li Sao are "analogy between human virtues and things" and "analogy between human beings and things." These two modes are similar in their tenors and vehicles, and share the same structure, and they are built on the analogy between the beauty of character and the beauty of nature. The aesthetic thought exhibits an unification between the heaven and the human being. However, the paper argues that the two modes essentially follow two different princiles in aesthetics with different cultural spirits. The analogy betwen virtues and things is a …

Experience And History: Hoggart'sThe Uses Of Literacy, Xiangyu Cheng Jul 2012

Experience And History: Hoggart'sThe Uses Of Literacy, Xiangyu Cheng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Richard Hoggart's The Uses of Literacy is generally taken to be an initiation of English cultural studies, and it also became one of the starting points of the "cultural controversy" emerged from the "first" New Left. The focal issues include whether Hoggart and this work fall under Leavisism, and what historical situation his work was born, but the historical specificities and implications have not been given due examination so that the research literature on Hoggart has fallen into an either-or cycle. The paper takes into consideration the historial background of Hoggart's The Uses of Literary and reveals the historical specificities …

The Transformation Of The Self-Congnitive Mechanism In The Left-Wing Intellectuals After The 1927 Revolution, Guanghai Zhang Jul 2012

The Transformation Of The Self-Congnitive Mechanism In The Left-Wing Intellectuals After The 1927 Revolution, Guanghai Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

With the rapid emergence of the petty bourgeoise ideology following the failure of the Great Revolution in 1927, left-wing Chinese intellectuals were widely engaged into debate and reflection on issues about the petty bourgeoisie. The movement was on the one hand rooted theoretically on Marxist theory and on the other hand originated from the reflection over the failure of the 1927 Revolution, while at the same time it was swayed by CCP's class policy. Petty bourgeoisie's revolutionary potential came to be under question following the failure of the 1927 Revolution, and its original sin was overemphasized. However, differences existed among …

Translated Literature In The Narrative Of Modern Chinese Literary History, Binghui Song

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The paper starts from literary "categorical concepts," "mediation", and "indeterminacy" to clarify some literary conceptual premises to prepare for the literary historical narration of translated literature.

Chinese Diasporic Culture Studies In The "Post-National" Age: The Politics Of Discourse And Theoretical Transformation, Feng Lan Mar 2012

Chinese Diasporic Culture Studies In The "Post-National" Age: The Politics Of Discourse And Theoretical Transformation, Feng Lan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Under the impact of post-theories, Chinese diasporic culture studies has exhibited a tendency to resist or transcend the political domination of the nation-state. This essay examines the sources of and the relationships between three major theories in this field, seeking to clarify their ideological orientations as well as historical limitations. The paper concludes that the connection between the Chinese diaspora and the sociopolitical process of modern China necessitates a methodologically critical application of Western formulations of post-nationalist theories into Chinese diasporic culture studies.

The Futures Of Comparative Literature, Lezra Jacques Mar 2012

The Futures Of Comparative Literature, Lezra Jacques

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Comparativism, this essay argues, should respond to the phenomenon of globalization by producing a critique of the concepts of literary value and universality. A polemical genealogy of the discipline of Comparative Literature shows "literary theory" in the post-war period to have emerged as a threat to disciplinary boundaries in the university, and for this reason to have always been regulated by a Cold-War humanism grounded in an Arnoldian belief in concepts like "the world." Comparativism should militate against such concepts rather than adopt them; it should take up the tasks of producing difference, of guarding untranslatability, of recapturing the discipline’s …

On The Publicity Of Cultural Critique, Dongfeng Tao Mar 2012

On The Publicity Of Cultural Critique, Dongfeng Tao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper, based on Hannah Arendt's distinction between truth and opinion, argues that cultural critique owes its publicity to the fact that it doesn't claim absolute truths or professional knowledge but debatable, negotiable opinions. The space of cultural critique is the agora of public opinions, nor the wholesale centre of truths or laboratories of specialized knowledge. Cultural critics are neither philosophers with Platonic contempt for opinions nor professionals in modern hierarchical institutions, but public intellectuals with sensibility to public issues as well as social responsibility and reason. The paper points out that the potency of cultural critique lies not in …

On The Four Dimensions Of Cross-Cultural Aesthetic Appreciation, Qingben Li Jan 2012

On The Four Dimensions Of Cross-Cultural Aesthetic Appreciation, Qingben Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

According to Eliot Deutsch's studies in Comparative Aesthetics, the four dimensions of cross-cultural aesthetic appreciation are Cultural-Authorial Weltanschauung, Cultural-Authorial Aesthetic Preference, Formal Content and Symbolic Values. We will encounter many difficulties when appreciating the works of art from other cultures because of cultural differences. However, the four dimensions can help us overcome these obstacles, thus making possible our better understanding of the aesthetic features of the works of art. Comparative aesthetics is not to weigh the supremacy of the Chinese art or the Western art, nor to take the work of art as proof to cultural differences, but to find …

A Study Of F. R Leavis's Cultural Criticism, Xiangchun Meng Jan 2012

A Study Of F. R Leavis's Cultural Criticism, Xiangchun Meng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

F. R. Leavis was the most influential and controversial critic and one of the forerunners of cultural criticism in the 20th century Britain. His cultural criticism is the point of departure for his literary criticism, which in turn aims for cultural and social health. Leavis's cultural criticism comprises mainly of the conception of the "organic community", the theorization of "minority culture" and the promotion of "literary culture" and the criticism of the "Technologico-Benthamite" culture, the first three of which form the core of his cultural ideals. A better understanding of Leavis's cultural criticism may illuminate our reflections on the cultural …

From The Subaltern To The Precariat, During Simon Jan 2012

From The Subaltern To The Precariat, During Simon

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This essay argues that, given the global dominance of neo-liberal capitalism, the concept of the subaltern now needs to be replaced by that of the precariat, a term first used by Pierre Bourdieu. It further argues that the category of the subaltern emerged in key post-disciplines of cultural studies, postcolonialism and subaltern studies, all of which themselves belong to the aftermath of the West's 1968 revolutions. In our era of global capitalism, their usefulness is in decline. Indeed the precariat is a broader category than the subaltern since it covers not just those who live on the margins of the …
