The Category, Complexity, Starting Points And Methodology Of Image Studies, Jirong Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The development of imagology can be traced back to the study of literary imagery, comparative studies and iconology, which covers early research on literature and society, the study of image and illusion, and contemporary study of image and discourse. Imagology has developed through the three stages develop from literary history, poetics and power discourse, while the focus of its content balances between holistic analysis and textual studies, and its methodology makes use of the models of culture studies and also tries to highlight the relation between image construction and power discourse. Therefore, the remarkable aspect to be noted in image …

Traumatic Memory: Psychic Reality And Cultural Representation, Jingrong Zhao Mar 2015

Traumatic Memory: Psychic Reality And Cultural Representation, Jingrong Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Traumatic memory exhibits three fundamental features, namely, the individualistic nature, personal experience, and emotional nature, among which personal experience is the most important because the subject of traumatic memory has a pre-privilege of emotion and ethics. The ultimate goal of the subject with traumatic memory is to get through the negative effects of trauma on the subject and make him cope with the real life. Traumatic memory can be studied from the perspective of its origin in the reality and its cultural representation. Trauma in the form of individual suffering could become collective crisis only when it is studied in …

Changing Authorship: The Evolution On Literary Practices And Theory, Miaomiao Xu Mar 2015

Changing Authorship: The Evolution On Literary Practices And Theory, Miaomiao Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Focusing on the changing concept of author, this paper tries to investigate the new demands posed to literary theory from the new media by contextualizing its argument in the combined development of literary theory, literary history and new media. The paper claims that literary theory, due to its development in the context of print culture, increasingly shows its deficiencies in the current media. In terms of the authorship, individual authors may not have been essential for literary creation, and the concept of determined authors is established in written system and the print culture and re-enforced with the regulations of intellectual …

How To Understand The Interdisciplinary Of Cultural Studies: Taking Hoggart's Uses Of Literacy As An Example, Jia Yan Mar 2015

How To Understand The Interdisciplinary Of Cultural Studies: Taking Hoggart's Uses Of Literacy As An Example, Jia Yan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Richard Hoggart's Uses of Literacy established the basic paradigm for the interdisciplinary nature of the cultural studies, and its essential principle is to start from the "living culture" of social life, to study literary texts, especially the texts of popular culture rather than to study the texts of "classic literary works" determined by some experts and scholars, and to find how the texts influence and shape the everyday life of people (especially the working class). This purpose of cultural studies has entailed its genetic relationship with literature, popular culture and sociology, and in essence constituted a new way of literary …

On Academic Confidence, Xian Zhou Jan 2015

On Academic Confidence, Xian Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

China's academic confidence is an emergent issue at present, but this issue is deeply rooted in the historical and cultural context configured by two parallel trends in late 19th- and early 20th-century China: the influence of the Western civilization and the decline of Chinese traditional culture. From the period of "the sick man of East Asia" to the current "China's rise," the travel of theory in the globalization ignites the appeal for academic originality. This appeal to re-establish Chinese academic confidence is not merely a slogan but a strategy with complicated cultural imports. The key to rebuild this confidence lies …

The Poetic Origins Of Media Studies: Some Quantitative Preliminary Understandings, Murvai Peter, Scheffel-Dunand Dominique Jan 2015

The Poetic Origins Of Media Studies: Some Quantitative Preliminary Understandings, Murvai Peter, Scheffel-Dunand Dominique

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

If the modernist model has dominated the field of literary theory at least since the second half of the 19th Century, does this mean that it also provided a conceptual and discursive framework which was to be adopted and adapted by the field of Media Studies in the 20th Century? The present study gives a tentative answer to this question by shedding light on some of the correlations between concepts found in the modernist aesthetics and in a number of canonical texts in the fields of Media and Communication. More precisely, we propose to conduct a quantitative investigation. Its purpose …

F. R. Leavis And Cultural Studies: From Leavis To Hoggart, And To Williams, Ruiqing Zhang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The present paper aims to clarify the genetic historical relationships between F. R. Leavis's cultural criticism and the discipline of Cultural Studies. It attempts a general survey of Leavis's criticism on culture, connecting him with the early development of Cultural Studies represented by Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams in the 1950s, and examines the complexity, contradictions and struggles in the transition from Leavis to Hoggrat and to Williams. Through an analysis of Leavis's cultural criticism, Hoggart's Uses of Literacy and Williams' Culture and Society, the paper delineates the internal relationships of intertextuality. The development of Cultural Studies has been a …

The Practical Orientation And Hasty Theorization In The Expansion Of Literary Theory: An Unfinished Case On Literature And Literariness, Nan Gao Nov 2014

The Practical Orientation And Hasty Theorization In The Expansion Of Literary Theory: An Unfinished Case On Literature And Literariness, Nan Gao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The expansion of literary theory has been accepted by all the related circles. However, the theoretical explorations into it appear haste and leave much to be clarified. Central to the expansion is the argument over the relationship between literariness and literature, whereas literariness becomes crucial for social life to be included into literary theory. In fact, the concept of literariness itself is not sufficient to support the theory. The leading role of literariness in the expansion arises from the so-called marginalization of literature, which reflects a strong sense of loss among the elitist thinking of literature and literary theory. However, …

A Revolutionist's Loyalty Crisis And Its Dissolution: A Re-Reading Of Wang Meng'sBu Li, Dongfeng Tao Nov 2014

A Revolutionist's Loyalty Crisis And Its Dissolution: A Re-Reading Of Wang Meng'sBu Li, Dongfeng Tao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Wang Meng's novel Bu Li ("Bolshevistic Salute") is about the loyalty crisis of the protagonist Zhong Yicheng, a Chinese revolutionist. The terror of the loyalty crisis lies in that Zhong can never be an independent being but is totally attached to revolution itself. The faith of a revolutionist and the loyalty to Chinese Communist Party serve as the foundation of Zhong's identity, and his relation with revolution becomes the sole reason and meaning for his life as well as the guarantee for him to be a "human." The only thing he can be is a revolutionist and a son of …

Earl Miner, Comparative Poetics And The Construction Of World Poetics, Ning Wang Nov 2014

Earl Miner, Comparative Poetics And The Construction Of World Poetics, Ning Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In the international circles of comparative literature and literary theory, comparative poetics dealing with literary theory still occupies a position although elite literature and its theory are impacted by cultural studies. In this aspect, American comparatist Earl Miner's pioneering contribution should not be neglected. Although Miner was not the first to shift scholarly attention to the study of Eastern comparative literature and literary theory, it may be argued that his intercultural explorations into comparative poetics have surpassed his precursors or contemporaries like René étiemble, Douwe Fokkema and James Liu, entering the field of general literary and theoretical studies. Miner's contribution …

A Canon Of Fantastic Literature Studies: On Tzvetan Todorov's The Fantastic: A Structural Approach To A Literary Genre, Fang Tan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Fantastic literature is an important part of the world literature, and also one of the long-term concerns of the Western literary criticism, resulting in a large amount of works and studies. In his The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, Tzvetan Todorov defines from the perspective of the structuralist poetics the fantastic novels as a literary genre and tries to reveal the mechanism inherent in the genre. Although this book has been the subject of considerable controversy since its publication, it is still, because of its original and insightful views, a must-read canon for the study of the …

Beyond The "Adaptation Paradigm": The "Spreadable Literature" And Its Contemporary Characteristics, Lulu Zhou Sep 2014

Beyond The "Adaptation Paradigm": The "Spreadable Literature" And Its Contemporary Characteristics, Lulu Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

In the era of fast changing multimedia environment, the problem of the literariness and its formats of existence and communication require new theoretical approaches. On the basis of empirical observations of some concrete cases in mainland China and abroad, this paper proposes the concept of "spreadable literature" to expand the theoretical vision of the mainstreamed "adaptation paradigm." The "adaptation paradigm" focuses on the studies of film and televisual screen adaptations of literary works and follows the linear communication logic, which not only eschews the strong tradition of the spreadability of ancient folk literature but also fails to help us understand …

Ecolinguistics And The Foundational Construction Of Language Theory For Contemporary Ecological Literary And Cultural Studies, Kuiying Zhao Jul 2014

Ecolinguistics And The Foundational Construction Of Language Theory For Contemporary Ecological Literary And Cultural Studies, Kuiying Zhao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Language research is closely related with eco literature and cultural studies, while a dilema in the study of eco literature and cultural theory is the need for a proper linguistic theory as its foundation. Ecolinguistics emphasizes the two-way interactions both between language and environment and between language and the world, and takes language as the intermedia between nature and culture, and put the environment of language into the complexity of nature, socity and psychological elements. Therefore, ecolinguisitics can transcend the one-way determinism between the world and language on the one hand and the either-or dualism of the naturalness and artbitrariniess …

Academic Communication And Its Production Sphere: Popular Media And The Configuration Of Chinese Modern Literary Theory, Jiangfeng Hu Jul 2014

Academic Communication And Its Production Sphere: Popular Media And The Configuration Of Chinese Modern Literary Theory, Jiangfeng Hu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since modern age in China when mass printing media became increasingly popular, theorists and literary critics have increasingly participated in the communications of newspapers, magazines and publishing, which also promoted the dissimilation of academic research and the knowledge theory. The gradual commercialization of knowledge and the establishment of the remuneration system helped to change the production mode of modern literary theory. Mass media not only opened up the production field of modern literary discourse, expanded the reproduction of theory and promoted the professionalization of literary theory studies, but also directly affected the internal form of modern literary theory and intervened …

Literary Folkloristics: The Trend Of Interdisciplinary Research In The Recent Thirty Years, Meili Shen, Qinjian Chen Jul 2014

Literary Folkloristics: The Trend Of Interdisciplinary Research In The Recent Thirty Years, Meili Shen, Qinjian Chen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Since the mid-1980s, literary folkloristics has become one of the new methods in literary study for its focus on the interdisciplinary study of literature and folklore. The theoretical interpretation and research practice have since taken two different academic orientation and theoretical approach. One emphasizes on the instrumentality of folklore theory in study of literary text, analysing the styles in literary works and exploring the folklore materials in them. The other has its theoretical foundations from the concepts such as "the cultural existence of man" and "literary study as the study of man," and it is more concerned with the understanding …

The Death And The Revival Of The Author, Hajdu Péter Jul 2014

The Death And The Revival Of The Author, Hajdu Péter

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The most influential trends in 20th-century literary criticism and theory of literature can be described as revolting against a both Romantic and positivist approach which focused on the person of the author rather than his or her literary product. Formalism, New Criticism, structuralism and post-structuralism denied any importance of the biographical author, and dealt with texts exclusively. After the Barthesian formulation of the death of the author (applauded by towering figures like Foucault or Derrida) the end of the 20th and even more the beginning of the 21st centuries have brought back the importance of the author. For some new …

Cognitive Mapping And The Adventures Of The Postmodern, Kellner Douglas Jun 2014

Cognitive Mapping And The Adventures Of The Postmodern, Kellner Douglas

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

During the 1980s and 1990s, debates about the differences between modernity and postmodernity as historical epochs; modernism and postmodernism in the arts; and wars between modern and postmodern theory defined key theoretical problematics in intellectualized spaces of the West, like the University. Fredric Jameson was one of the initiators of debates over the postmodern, and introduced the concept of cognitive mapping to describe theoretical accounts of the contemporary moment. I discuss conceptions of theory and mapping in the modern and postmodern debates and sort out appropriate uses of the discourse of the postmodern, and the usefulness of the postmodern turn …

Three Issues In Art Theory, Xian Zhou Jun 2014

Three Issues In Art Theory, Xian Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Art theory is both a contested concept and vaguely defined field of knowledge. The paper discusses three issues in art theory, trying to interpret art theory and its production of knowledge from different perspectives. First, the paper claims that art theory intermediates between aesthetics and subject theories of arts, and that, through self-criticism, the negative understanding of this intermediacy may be turned into positive construction to promote the development of art theory. Secondly, the paper examines from the perspective of field theory the origin, the institution and the symbolic capital of knowledge producer, and then it investigates the significance of …

The "Invention" Of System In The Development Of Western Art, Manting Yin Jun 2014

The "Invention" Of System In The Development Of Western Art, Manting Yin

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The development of arts in the 18th century reached a crucial stage in the Western art history, as it saw the gradual emergence of the modern art system. The system, though not shown in the drastic changes of artistic styles and tastes, was significant for the development of the ideas of arts. Different elements help to build an environment for the institutionalization of arts and to promote the establishment of the modern system of fine arts, and the elements include the institutionalization of art criticism, the emergence of modern art historical methods, and the establishment of Aesthetics as a discipline, …

What Is Our Contemporary Art Theory, Jian Li Jun 2014

What Is Our Contemporary Art Theory, Jian Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The transformation of Chinese art theory from the classical to the modern takes place within the framework of multiple tensions between such elements as the inheritance and the innovation of traditional ideas, the introduction and reformation of Western resources, and the concerns and responses to the context of the times. The paper proposes that the connotation and features of the art theory in modern and contemporary China may be described with the help of the concept of modernity, as further analyses may be done at the disciplinary level on the logic of its development and on some micro issues. These …

Gender As Cultural Production: The Cultural Critique In Contemporary Western Marxist Feminism, Rui Ma Apr 2014

Gender As Cultural Production: The Cultural Critique In Contemporary Western Marxist Feminism, Rui Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The uncovering of the sociality of gender and the reshaping of the consciousness of women are fundamental cultural appeals of feminism, and these appeals may rely on theoretical support from both classical Marxist dialectical analysis of the relationship between society and consciousness and Western Marxist illuminations of the subjectivity and cultural materialism, although the latter may take on more weight for feminist criticism. Since 1970s, Marxist feminism has absorbed the theory of cultural production, developed on Althusser's theory of ideology and British cultural studies, in its analysis of patriarchy, capitalism and gender system, and gender is thus disclosed as the …

Cultural Study By Taking Image As Methodology, Yong Li Jan 2014

Cultural Study By Taking Image As Methodology, Yong Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The essential difference between the study of images that takes images as the object and the study of images that takes images as the methodology lies in that the latter takes the formation and cultural context of images as its research focus. The image-as-methodology approach defines images as the collective cultural imagination about the Other, and this approach, by studying the images about the Other, examines the cultural dilemma behind the imagining Subject and searches for ways to resolve the deep contradictions in the Subject's self-identity, cultural value, and cultural strategy. This approach adopts three strategies by different ways of …

A Cultural Study Of Unrelated Homonym In Internet Language, Mofan Xu Nov 2013

A Cultural Study Of Unrelated Homonym In Internet Language, Mofan Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Unrelated homonym is a common phenomenon of language use in contemporary internet, in which the newly created homonyms have no relevance to the meaning of the original words. Unrelated homonym is not a way of making neologism, but a special usage conditioned by cyber communication techniques and it has become a kind of normalized language play. There are two purposes in using unrelated homonyms: to attract readers' attention through signifier noise, and to achieve an ironic effect through conveying the intended original content in an arbitrary phonetic form. The target of the irony reflects the group psychology of the contemporary …

A Study On Contemporary Literary Theory: Reflecting, Adjusting And Deepening, Daren Lai May 2013

A Study On Contemporary Literary Theory: Reflecting, Adjusting And Deepening, Daren Lai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Recently, the change and development of the contemporary literary theory have started a new cycle of historical movement which interweaves the interaction between breakthroughs, inductions and establishments. To respond to the resultant changes and new issues, it is necessary to adjust the theoretical standpoint and approaches. Further construction, innovation and development of the contemporary literary theory pose new requirements in the form of three returns: a) from pursuing cultural studies to reverting on literary studies, b) from interpreting the phenomena to focusing on practical issues, and c) from the production of knowledge to the reconstruction of theory. Under the present …

Signs Of The Return To Literary Studies From The Debate On Literary Canon, Wenfang Yao May 2013

Signs Of The Return To Literary Studies From The Debate On Literary Canon, Wenfang Yao

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The debate on literary canon in 1970s raised the cultural issue behind literary canonization and promoted the turn from literary study to cultural studies. The turn, however, has also resulted in a return to literary studies, which could be seen in the 1990s arguments of some representative scholars engaged in the debate. Scholars such as J. Guillory, Harold Bloom and Jonathan Culler have all expressed that the canonization of literary texts should center on literature and aesthetics. Their common appeal also implies an inherent logic which helps to reconcile the debate on literary canon.

Cultural Signification And Literary Signification: With A Tentative Solution To Hillis Miller's Paradox Of Literary Identification Mode, Yang Liu Sep 2012

Cultural Signification And Literary Signification: With A Tentative Solution To Hillis Miller's Paradox Of Literary Identification Mode, Yang Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Signification theory constitutes a theoretical foundation of cultural studies as it is built on in-depth explorations of Saussure's language theory. Signification implies the requirement of decoding. Cultural signification is realized when the signified in first level symbolic system is hollowed out and filled in by the second level symbolic system, and it then exhibits as a mythological path to bourgeois ideology. Signification informs the implications of literary works and makes them intelligible from the perspective of semiotics. Along this line of delineation, we may find a possible solution to Hillis Miller’s paradox of literary identification mode between innocent reading and …

Confronting The Challenge Of Cultural Studies: The Future Of Comparative Literature, Ning Wang Sep 2012

Confronting The Challenge Of Cultural Studies: The Future Of Comparative Literature, Ning Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As we all know, cultural studies is characterized by its opposition to (elite) literary studies not only because it points to popular or non-elite literature which is usually not dealt with by literary scholars or more specifically, comparatists, but also because it severely challenges the discipline of comparative literature. But on the other hand, cultural studies complements literary studies with its significant contribution to the reconstruction of a sort of new comparative literature. What were not touched upon by traditional literary scholars are now studied by cultural studies scholars who are at the same time doing comparative studies. In this …

From "God From Lofty Mountains" To "God From Shaman Dance": Natural Aesthetics In Pre-Qin Dynasty, Shilun Zhong Jul 2012

From "God From Lofty Mountains" To "God From Shaman Dance": Natural Aesthetics In Pre-Qin Dynasty, Shilun Zhong

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Natural aesthetics in the pre-Qin period (before 221-207 B.C.) is a blend of elements from religion, ethic, art and witchcraft. The idea of "God from lofty mountains" reflects the worship of nature underlined by natural moral law. Human beings feel the overpowering awe of lofty mountains, and the feeling of awe transforms into the sublimity of ethics and morality in the society. "God from lofty mountains" represents people‘s desire and belief in the West Zhou period in their efforts to discover the rules of social development in the nature, but human's value is obscured in the combination between the essence …

"Poetry-Rituals-Happiness" In Chinese Thought And Aesthetics As A Discipline, Chengwan Lao, Meng Qi Jul 2012

"Poetry-Rituals-Happiness" In Chinese Thought And Aesthetics As A Discipline, Chengwan Lao, Meng Qi

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Aesthetics as a discipline was constructed under the system of Western philosophy, and then introduced into Chinese intellectual field. In terms of conceptualization of ideas, perhpas the concept of "happiness (le)" can be understood as equivalent to the Western concept of aesthetics. Aesthetics as a discinple in opposition to logic was established by Baumgarten, but its origin was rooted in Plato's concept of "beauty" and Aristotle's "form" in the four-cause elements. Western culture has a materialistic pursuit which emphasizes the essense of the objects as the expression of intuition of existence, and this pursuit in the form of rigorous examination of objects shows …
