The Challenge Of Urban Design In Securing Post-Event Legacies Of Olympic Parks, Renata Sanchez, Stephen Essex Dec 2017

The Challenge Of Urban Design In Securing Post-Event Legacies Of Olympic Parks, Renata Sanchez, Stephen Essex

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Olympic Parks demand a very distinctive built environment in order to function for their primary purpose, namely to host major sporting competitions. These spaces, however, require substantial reconfiguration in the post-event mode to ensure viable, mixed use and liveable places. This paper evaluates the challenges of transforming Olympic Parks, using evidence from four past hosts: Munich (1972), Sydney (2000), London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016). The discussion raises questions about retaining the ceremonial focus of the Olympic Park and whether a more decentralised model might make the associated urban design and planning legacies more deliverable for future host cities.

Investigating Multiple Domains Of Household Livelihood Security: Insights From Urban Slums In Bangladesh, S Akter, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In this article, the authors construct indices of Household Livelihood Security (HLS) domains, namely, economic, food, health, and education securities and empowerment with data from 1,120 poor households in two urban settlements of Bangladesh. The authors then jointly identify domain-specific socioeconomic determinants employing a multivariate Tobit model. A quintile analysis of domains shows high levels of inequalities among these poor households. The HLS domains are significantly positively correlated, and a host of factors significantly influence individual HLS domain. Interventions targeted at improving education, provision of business training and building of land asset are suggested to improve livelihood security.

Communicating Seismic Risk: The Geoethical Challenges Of A People-Centred, Participatory Approach, Is Stewart, J Ickert, R Lacassin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) encourages scientists to participate in bottom-up risk communication approaches that directly engage hazard-prone populations. Effective communication of seismic risks not only has economic impacts in terms of hazard mitigation but also provides social value in potentially empowering the marginalized populations that disproportionately live in high-risk areas. This emphasis on community-focused disaster preparedness, however, presents a novel set of communication challenges for geoscientists. Few scientists have training in or experience of translating their science for lay publics, and conveying complex risk information is especially difficult in circumstances where scientific issues are socially contested …

Earthquakes As Precursors Of Ductile Shear Zones In The Dry And Strong Lower Crust, L Menegon, G Pennacchioni, N Malaspina, K Harris, E Wood Dec 2017

Earthquakes As Precursors Of Ductile Shear Zones In The Dry And Strong Lower Crust, L Menegon, G Pennacchioni, N Malaspina, K Harris, E Wood

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The rheology and the conditions for viscous flow of the dry granulite facies lower crust are still poorly understood. Viscous shearing in the dry and strong lower crust commonly localizes in pseudotachylyte veins, but the deformation mechanisms responsible for the weakening and viscous shear localization in pseudotachylytes are yet to be explored. We investigated examples of pristine and mylonitized pseudotachylytes in anorthosites from Nusfjord (Lofoten, Norway). Mutual overprinting relationships indicate that pristine and mylonitized pseudotachylytes are coeval and resulted from the cyclical interplay between brittle and viscous deformation. The stable mineral assemblage in the mylonitized pseudotachylytes consists of plagioclase, amphibole, …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2017 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The study assesses the future potential of the jute sector in Bangladesh by examining its growth performance, international competitiveness, profitability, and production efficiency using national time-series data of over the period 1973-2013 and farm survey data from 289 farmers from two major jute growing areas of Bangladesh. Results revealed that the jute sector has experienced substantial growth in area, production, productivity, prices, and exports. However, productivity has stagnated during the latter 10-year period (2004-2013), while it grew at a rate of 1.3% per annum (p.a.) during the first 31-year period (1973-2003). …

Bromine In Plastic Consumer Products - Evidence For The Widespread Recycling Of Electronic Waste., Andrew Turner, Montserrat Filella

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

A range of plastic consumer products and components thereof have been analysed by x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry in a low density mode for Br as a surrogate for brominated flame retardant (BFR) content. Bromine was detected in about 42% of 267 analyses performed on electronic (and electrical) samples and 18% of 789 analyses performed on non-electronic samples, with respective concentrations ranging from 1.8 to 171,000μgg(-1) and 2.6 to 28,500μgg(-1). Amongst the electronic items, the highest concentrations of Br were encountered in relatively small appliances, many of which predated 2005 (e.g. a fan heater, boiler thermostat and smoke detector, and various …

Mudstones And Embedded Concretions Show Differences In Lithology-Related, But Not Source-Related Biomarker Distributions, Sk Lengger, Im Melendez, Re Summons, K Grice

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The mudstones of the Western Australian Gogo Formation harbour numerous carbonate concretions which often contain preserved fossils of Lagerstätte-like quality. These are especially notable in places where the mudstone has eroded, giving way to nodule fields, which afford valuable paleobiological records. It is, however, a challenge to determine their paleoenvironmental context. Here, we analysed concretions from a core drilled in the Canning Basin Gogo Formation. At two different depths, concretions were compared to the surrounding mudstone found at the same depth. Electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy showed that the concretions were carbonate-rich and contained detrital fragments. Biomarker data showed that …

Let’S Improv It: The Embodied Investigation Of Social Collaboration, K Łucznik, A Jackson, A Sakuta, E Siarava

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

How do we share embodied knowledge? How do we understand the world through our bodies? How can we effectively interpret and communicate somatic experiences to a wider audience? These questions emerged during a collaborative research project Let’s Improv It (August 2016, Plymouth University), which set out to explore how kinaesthetic empathy and multisensory perception help us to understand our own actions, intentions and emotions, as well as those of others. We additionally questioned the role and perception of physical and emotional touch within embodied knowledge. After a five-day practice-led investigation, a 20-minute improvised somatic movement score was developed with the …

The Hydrothermal Alteration Of Carbonatite In The Fen Complex, Norway: Mineralogy, Geochemistry, And Implications For Rare Earth Element Resource Formation, C Marien, Ah Dijkstra, C Wilkins

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

ABSTRACTThe Fen Complex in Norway consists of a ~583 Ma composite carbonatite-ijolite-pyroxenite diatreme intrusion. Locally, high grades (up to 1.6 wt.% total REE) of rare-earth elements (REE) are found in a hydrothermally altered, hematite-rich carbonatite known as rødbergite. The progressive transformation of primary igneous carbonatite to rødbergite was studied here using scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry trace-element analysis of 23 bulk samples taken along a key geological transect. A primary mineral assemblage of calcite, dolomite, apatite, pyrite, magnetite and columbite with accessory quartz, baryte, pyrochlore, fluorite and REE fluorocarbonates was found to have transformed progressively into a …

Discussion On ‘An Enigmatic Echinoid Spine From South Devon, Uk: Devonian Or Cretaceous?’, Proceedings Of The Yorkshire Geological Society , 61, 165–167, Mb Hart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The echinoid spine described by Donovan & Fearnhead (2017) is reportedly from close to the famous Wolborough Quarry [SX 852704], which is located just to the SW of Newton Abbot in south Devon. The Middle Devonian limestones of this quarry have been described by Scrutton (1978), Leveridge et al. (2003), Leveridge (2011) and Wilmut et al. (2014). As indicated by the authors, and previous research, cherts are exceedingly rare in these limestones.

A New Occurrence Of The Early Jurassic Brachiopod Anarhynchia From The Canadian Cordillera Confirms Its Membership In Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems, J Palfy, Zsófia Kovács, Gregory D. Price, Attila Vörös

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Cold seeps, where seepage of hydrocarbon-rich fluids occurs in the sea floor, are sites that harbor highly specialized ecosystems associated with distinctive carbonate sediments. Although their Mesozoic record is scarce and patchy, it commonly includes dimerelloid rhynchonellide brachiopods. Here we report a monospecific assemblage of Anarhynchia from a limestone boulder of early Pliensbachian (Early Jurassic) age in the Inklin Formation of the Whitehorse Trough in the Stikine terrane, from a locality at Atlin Lake in northern British Columbia. Specimens are among the largest known Mesozoic brachiopods, up to 9 cm in length, and described here as Anarhynchia smithi n. sp. …

Effect Of Soil Saturation On Denitrification In A Grassland Soil, Gp Matthews, L Cardenas, R Bol, D Lewicka-Szczebak, A Gregory, W Whalley, T Misselbrook, D Scholefield, R Well

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is of major importance as a greenhouse gas and precursor of ozone (O3) destruction in the stratosphere mostly produced in soils. The soil-emitted N2O is generally predominantly derived from denitrification and, to a smaller extent, nitrification, both processes controlled by environmental factors and their interactions, and are influenced by agricultural management. Soil water content expressed as water-filled pore space (WFPS) is a major controlling factor of emissions and its interaction with compaction, has not been studied at the micropore scale. A laboratory incubation was carried out at different saturation levels for a grassland soil and emissions of …

Crystallographic Control And Texture Inheritance During Mylonitization Of Coarse Grained Quartz Veins, A Ceccato, G Pennacchioni, L Menegon, M Bestmann

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Quartz veins within Rieserferner pluton underwent deformation during post-magmatic cooling at temperature around 450 °C. Different crystallographic orientations of cm-sized quartz vein crystals conditioned the evolution of microstructures and crystallographic preferred orientations (CPO) during vein-parallel simple shear up to high shear strains (? ˜ 10). For ? < 2, crystals stretched to ribbons of variable aspect ratios. The highest aspect ratios resulted from {m} glide in ribbons with c-axis sub-parallel to the shear zone vorticity Y-axis. Ribbons with c-axis orthogonal to Y (XZ-type ribbons) were stronger and hardened more quickly: they show lower aspect ratios and fine (grain size ~ 10–20 µm) recrystallization along sets of microshear zones (µSZs) exploiting crystallographic planes. Distortion of XZ-type ribbons and …

© 2017 The Authors Unravelling patterns of relative sea-level change during previous interglacials enhances our understanding of ice sheet response to changing climate. Temperate-latitude estuarine environments have the potential to preserve continuous records of relative sea level from previous interglacial (warm) periods. This is important because, currently, we typically only have snapshots of sea-level highstands from low-latitude corals and raised palaeoshoreline indicators while the (continuous) deep-sea oxygen isotope record only provides indirect evidence of sea-level changes. Here, we focus on the Nar Valley in eastern England, in which is preserved evidence of a late middle-Pleistocene marine transgression more than 20 …

Evidence For The Early Onset Of The Ipswichian Thermal Optimum: Palaeoecology Of Last Interglacial Deposits At Whittlesey, Eastern England, H Langford, S Boreham, Rm Briant, Gr Coope, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Fossiliferous deposits infilling a channel at Whittlesey, eastern England, are dated by amino acid racemization to the Last Interglacial, and pollen analysis indicates deposition in Ipswichian biozones Ip Ib and Ip IIb. Multidisciplinary palaeoenvironmental analyses of these deposits provide a rare insight into Ip Ib subzone conditions. Specifically, the Ip Ib deposits contain exotic thermophiles Naias minor, Belgrandia marginata, Bembidion elongatum, Pelochares versicolor, Caccobius schreberi, Onthophagus massai and Emys orbicularis, usually associated with Ip IIb. Combined palaeotemperature reconstructions based on beetle, ostracod and vertebrate assemblages of the Ip Ib deposits indicate that summers (mean July range +19 to +22°C) were …

Spatializing Climate Justice: Justice Claim Making And Carbon Pricing Controversies In Australia, Ian Bailey Sep 2017

Spatializing Climate Justice: Justice Claim Making And Carbon Pricing Controversies In Australia, Ian Bailey

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Recent years have seen significant academic attention to conceptualizing climate justice and how its ideas might be mobilized in political debates on climate policy. This article contributes to these debates by advancing two arguments. The first concerns the need for greater examination of how climate justice coexists and competes with more established political and justice considerations during the negotiation of climate policies. I argue that distinguishing analytically between normative interpretations of climate justice and justice claims made by parties affected by climate change or by mitigation or adaptation policies provides fertile ground for deepening understanding of the multivalent and relational …

The Limitations Of Hibonite As A Single-Mineral Oxybarometer For Early Solar System Processes, Aj Berry, Pf Schofield, An Kravtsova, La Miller, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The relationships between the composition of hibonite with the general formula CaAl12-2x-yMgxTi4+xTi3+yO19, the oxidation state of Ti (Ti3+/ΣTi, where ΣTi = Ti3+ + Ti4+), and oxygen fugacity (fO2) were investigated experimentally. It was found that hibonite can be synthesised with a range of Ti3+/ΣTi values at constant fO2 and with a constant Ti3+/ΣTi value for a range of fO2s. It was also found that if hibonite with the formula CaAl12-yTi3+yO19 (Ti3+/ΣTi = 1) is equilibrated with a melt of CAI composition at fO2s below the iron-wüstite buffer then the resulting hibonite contained Mg, with Mg per formula unit (pfu) ~ …

In this study we collected suspended particulate matter (SPM) along a transect from the East Sea to the Bering Sea from 18 to 28 July in 2015. We then analyzed the samples for the Arctic sea ice proxy IP25 together with various phytoplankton-derived lipids including a tri-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI triene) and two sterols (brassicasterol and dinosterol) to assess the suitability of these compounds for the so called PIP25 index in the western Arctic region as a proxy for sea ice change in the past. The distributions of some other commonly reported sterols (cholesterol and 24-methylene cholesterol) were also …

Analyzing Riparian Zone Ecosystem Services Bundles To Instruct River Management, Looy K Van, Thierry Tormos, Yves Souchon, David Gilvear

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ecosystem service framework is now well accepted for focussing management strategies to preserve and restore ecosystems. Its implementation remains challenging, however, due to the environment’s complexity and dynamics that interfere with ecosystems’ ability to provide the services. Here, we question whether we can show where and how to intervene in riparian corridors to restore specific ecosystem services without endangering others. Specific hypotheses in this context are for the spatial aggregation of ecosystem services delivered by riparian corridors with respect to naturalness (1), to the existence of bundles of ecosystem services (2), and finally for the scale sensitivity of this …
