In Situ Elemental Characterisation Of Marine Microplastics By Portable Xrf., Andrew Turner
In Situ Elemental Characterisation Of Marine Microplastics By Portable Xrf., Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The performance of a portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer configured in a test stand and coupled to a laptop has been evaluated for the determination of various elements (including Br, Cd, Cl, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) in beached microplastics. Under laboratory conditions, analysis of samples that covered the 3-mm x-ray beam returned concentrations that, on average, were within 20% of concentrations determined by ICP following acid digestion. Analysis of progressively smaller offcuts (to <1mm) resulted in corresponding concentrations that were comparable to those determined in original samples but errors and detection limits that progressively increased. When the configuration was deployed in situ with two operators, up to 35 microplastics counted for 60s each could be processed per hour. Advantages of immediate measurements include the development of an iterative study strategy, rapid compliance-evaluation, and identification of specific materials for further characterisation or study in the laboratory.

Switching Deformation Mode And Mechanisms During Subduction Of Continental Crust: A Case Study From Alpine Corsica, G Molli, L Menegon, A Malasoma
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The switching in deformation mode (from distributed to localized) and mechanisms (viscous versus frictional) represent a relevant issue in the frame of crustal deformation, being also connected with the concept of the brittle–ductile transition and seismogenesis. In a subduction environment, switching in deformation mode and mechanisms and scale of localization may be inferred along the subduction interface, in a transition zone between the highly coupled (seismogenic zone) and decoupled deeper aseismic domain (stable slip). However, the role of brittle precursors in nucleating crystal-plastic shear zones has received more and more consideration being now recognized as fundamental in some cases for …

The Interdisciplinary Use Of “Overpressure”, D. C.P. Peacock, M. W. Anderson, A. Rotevatn, D. J. Sanderson, E. Tavarnelli
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Overpressure is a polysemic word that has a variety of meanings within and across different disciplines. This is likely to be a particular problem in analysis of geothermal resources, where reservoir engineers, volcanologists and structural geologists may each confidently use overpressure but mean different things. We suggest that, to avoid confusion, the term should be carefully and accurately defined whenever used. We also suggest that other, less ambiguous terms be used, such as supra-hydrostatic fluid pressure when fluid pressure exceeds that expected in a column of water at that depth, and supra-lithostatic fluid pressure for the situation in which fluid …

Atomic Spectrometry Update: Review Of Advances In Elemental Speciation, Robert Clough, Chris F. Harrington, Steve J. Hill, Yolanda Madrid, Julian F. Tyson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This is the ninth Atomic Spectrometry Update (ASU) to focus on advances in elemental speciation and covers a period of approximately 12 months from December 2015. This ASU review deals with all aspects of the analytical atomic spectrometry speciation methods developed for: the determination of oxidation states; organometallic compounds; coordination compounds; metal and heteroatom-containing biomolecules, including metalloproteins, proteins, peptides and amino acids; and the use of metal-tagging to facilitate detection via atomic spectrometry. The review does not cover fractionation, which is sometimes termed operationally defined speciation. As with all ASU reviews the focus of the research reviewed includes those methods …

Poverty Profiles And Coping Strategies Of The Haor (Ox-Bow Lake) Households In Bangladesh, Mmh Kazal, S Rahman, Mz Hossain
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study examines the depth and severity of poverty and coping strategies of 4065 households from 30 haor (ox-bow lake) areas from six north-eastern districts of Bangladesh. Results revealed that 29.6% and 43.0% of the surveyed households were below the lower and upper poverty lines based on Cost of Basic Needs (CBN) method. The depth of poverty was estimated at 7.6% and 12.4% and the severity of poverty at 3.0% and 5.2%, respectively based of lower and upper poverty line estimates, which were substantially higher than the national average for rural areas of Bangladesh. Poverty is relatively higher for the …

Settling-Driven Gravitational Instabilities Associated With Volcanic Clouds: New Insights From Experimental Investigations, S Scollo, C Bonadonna, I Manzella
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Downward propagating instabilities are often observed at the bottom of volcanic plumes and clouds. These instabilities generate fingers that enhance the sedimentation of fine ash. Despite their potential influence on tephra dispersal and deposition, their dynamics is not entirely understood, undermining the accuracy of volcanic ash transport and dispersal models. Here, we present new laboratory experiments that investigate the effects of particle size, composition and concentration on finger generation and dynamics. The experimental set-up consists of a Plexiglas tank equipped with a removable plastic sheet that separates two different layers. The lower layer is a solution of water and sugar, …

Enhancing Productivity And Resource Conservation By Eliminating Inefficiency Of Thai Rice Farmers: A Zero Inefficiency Stochastic Frontier Approach, J Liu, S Rahman, S Sriboonchitta, A Wiboonpongse
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study first identified fully efficient farmers and then estimated technical efficiency of inefficient farmers, identifying their determinants by applying a Zero Inefficiency Stochastic Frontier Model (ZISFM) on a sample of 300 rice farmers from central-northern Thailand. Next, the study developed scenarios of potential production increase and resource conservation if technical inefficiency was eliminated. Results revealed that 13% of the sampled farmers were fully efficient, thereby justifying the use of our approach. The estimated mean technical efficiency was 91%, implying that rice production can be increased by 9%, by reallocating resources. Land and labor were the major productivity drivers. Education …

Eurasian Ice-Sheet Dynamics And Sensitivity To Subglacial Hydrology, E Gudlaugsson, A Humbert, K Andreassen, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Ice-stream dynamics are strongly controlled by processes taking place at the ice/bed interface where subglacial water both lubricates the base and saturates any existing, underlying sediment. Large parts of the former Eurasian ice sheet were underlain by thick sequences of soft, marine sediments and many areas are imprinted with geomorphological features indicative of fast flow and wet basal conditions. Here, we study the effect of subglacial water on past Eurasian ice-sheet dynamics by incorporating a thin-film model of basal water flow into the ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS and use it to better represent flow in temperate areas. The adjunction of subglacial …

Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Actives Onto Microporous Functionalised Calcium Carbonate (Fcc), Charlotte L. Levy, G. Peter Matthews, Giuliano M. Laudone, Samuel Beckett, Andrew Turner, Joachim Schoelkopf, Patrick A.C. Gane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Microporous ‘functionalised’ calcium carbonate (FCC) has potential for use as a carrier for the controlled release of ‘actives’, by permeation and diffusion. We have investigated the nature of the FCC surface and the mechanism of adsorption of two typical actives, namely the anti-inflammatory drug aspirin and the flavour compound vanillin, from chloroform and aqueous ethanolic solutions. There is indirect evidence from the quantitative perturbation of Tóth isotherms that their adsorption is hindered by a stagnant diffusion layer of water trapped in the micro-porosity of the FCC. To complement previous studies of the surface of FCC, it was also tested with …
From Oppel To Callomon (And Beyond): Building A High-Resolution Ammonite-Based Biochronology For The Jurassic System, Kn Page
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
By 1849, Alcide d'Orbigny had proposed a very modern looking global subdivision of a Jurassique ‘System’, into a sequence of 10 étages. D'Orbigny's stages were based on a basic biostratigraphical framework, but there were still a number of issues with its actual demonstrable applicability internationally. In 1856, Albert Oppel took d'Orbigny's framework and, as stated by W.J.Arkell in 1933, ‘breath[ed] new life into it…placing the whole science of stratigraphical geology on a new footing’. Oppel recognized eight ‘Etagen’, divided into a sequence of ‘zones’ which he considered to be time-related to correlation units of theoretically universal application – a very …

Estimating Bedload Transport Rates In A Gravel-Bed River Using Seismic Impact Plates: Model Development And Application, Pj Soar, Pw Downs
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
A data-driven, uncertainty-bound estimation technique for bedload transport rates is developed based on passive sensing devices. The model converts sediment samples to a mass in transit for each instantaneous discharge according to impacts detected and a Monte Carlo simulation of the load determined at random from the particle size distribution. Using impact count data autogenically produces a supply-limited, location-specific and high-resolution time-series of bedload rates, while the probabilistic approach inherently accommodates the stochastic nature of bedload transport. Application to the River Avon (Devon, U.K.) provides cross-sectional bedload rate estimates within the bounds of experimental data and calibrated to observed field …

The Bothnian Sea Ice Stream: Early Holocene Retreat Dynamics Of The South-Central Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Sl Greenwood, Cc Clason, J Nyberg, M Jakobsson, P Holmlund
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Gulf of Bothnia hosted a variety of palaeo-glaciodynamic environments throughout the growth and decay of the last Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, from the main ice-sheet divide to a major corridor of marine- and lacustrine-based deglaciation. Ice streaming through the Bothnian and Baltic basins has been widely assumed, and the damming and drainage of the huge proglacial Baltic Ice Lake has been implicated in major regional and hemispheric climate changes. However, the dynamics of palaeo-ice flow and retreat in this large marine sector have until now been inferred only indirectly, from terrestrial, peripheral evidence. Recent acquisition of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry opens …

Radiocarbon Dating Of A Multi-Phase Passage Tomb On Baltinglass Hill, Co. Wicklow., R Schulting, A Sheridan, A Mcclatchie, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Baltinglass is a multi-chamber Neolithic passage tomb in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, excavated in the 1930s. This paper presents the results of a radiocarbon dating programme on charred wheat grains and hazelnut shell found underlying the cairn, and on cremated human bone found within and near two of the monument’s five chambers. The results are surprising, in that three of the six determinations on calcined bone pre-date by one or two centuries the charred cereals and hazelnut shells sealed under the cairn, dating to c. 3600–3400 calbc. Of the remaining three bone results, one is coeval with the charred plant remains, …

Mineral Assemblages And Textures Of Granite-Hosted Veins In The Hemerdon W–Sn Deposit: Constraints From Scanning Electron Microscope Chemical X-Ray Mapping, C Wilkins, B Jeffery, J Speer, Ah Dijkstra, J Mcfarlane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
We report the results of a petrological and mineralogical microscopy study of granite-hosted greisen-bordered veins within granite of the Hemerdon W–Sn deposit, Devon, one of the five largest W deposits in the World. The deposit is currently mined at the Drakelands Mine. The Hemerdon granite is a satellite intrusion of the larger Dartmoor pluton of the post-Variscan Cornubian granitoid batholith. Using a range of microscopy techniques, including fast large-area chemical mapping by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) on a scanning electron microscope, we identified three types of mineralised veins in drill core material: W-only veins, Sn-only veins and …
Rural Change In The Context Of Globalization : Examining Theoretical Issues, F Da Silva Machado
Rural Change In The Context Of Globalization : Examining Theoretical Issues, F Da Silva Machado
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Early discussions and theoretical positions concerning rural change were developed by researchers from countries with post-production economies in order to explain the rural transformations. When discussing economic change in rural space over the last decades, Marsden, T. et al. (1993) presented a new perspective for understanding rural restructuring that includes new subjects, such as capital mobility, flexible production regimes, complexity in the relationship between technology and environment, economic deregulation and new political processes. According to these authors, in order to understand such processes, it is necessary to research the effects of globalization at local scale of action. A recurrent theme …
