There's No Place Like Home: The Haunted House As Literary Motif, Mary Catherine Mcdaniel Jan 1982

There's No Place Like Home: The Haunted House As Literary Motif, Mary Catherine Mcdaniel

Masters Theses

This thesis traces the development of the haunted house in British and American literature and covers a time span of roughly two hundred years. Its approach is chronological: beginning with Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, it examines the use of the Bad Place as a literary motif, emphasizing the consistencies in its development while noting the inconsistencies as well. From Walpole to Stephen King, we see that the haunted house has continuously represented two things. On one hand, it may serve as a repository for unexpiated sin. The traditional haunted house, in fact, is nothing more than the …

Aerodynamics Of Closely Coupled Wings For Varying Chords And Airfoil Planforms, Gary D. Vincent

Masters Theses

"Aerodynamic characteristics of a dual wing aircraft were analyzed with variations in airfoil sections and chord ratios over existing equal chard ratio dual wing and monoplane aircraft designs. Two- and three-dimensional aerodynamic studies were conducted to find the wing geometry which would create the minimum cruise drag. The two-dimensional aerodynamic data was obtained from a multi-element inviscid vortex panel program coupled to a momentum integral boundary layer program to account for the aerodynamic coupling between the wings. With this data, a three-dimensional vortex lattice program calculated the three-dimensional aerodynamic data. compared to an equal chard ratio dual wing aircraft, lower …

An Applied Approach To Automatic Pressure Transient Analysis., Jeffrey Allan Joseph Jan 1982

An Applied Approach To Automatic Pressure Transient Analysis., Jeffrey Allan Joseph

Masters Theses

"A generalized digital approach to pressure transient (well-test) analysis is developed. The model is rigorously applicable to flow tests (pressure drawdown or injectivity of Newtonian liquids), and to pressure buildup or falloff tests provided the f low time prior to shut-in is large compared to the total shut-in time. However, buildup or falloff data may s till be analyzed if the above conditions are not satisfied, using the principles of superposition/desuperposition.

When plotted on logarithmic coordinates, pressure transient data generally assume a characteristic shape, indicative of flow behavior. Accurate computer analysis of this data requires its representation in concise mathematical …

Proposal Of Development Of A Gifted Program To Be Implemented By South Eastern Special Education, Brenda Kaye Palmer Allen Jan 1982

Proposal Of Development Of A Gifted Program To Be Implemented By South Eastern Special Education, Brenda Kaye Palmer Allen

Masters Theses

Since a major purpose of American education is to meet each child's individual needs, then the intellectually gifted children require the same consideration as those who are slow learners, handicapped, economically disadvantaged, or emotionally disturbed. Research reveals that there are approximately one and one-half to two million gifted children in the United States which means that between two and three percent of the students in any given classroom fall into this category. It is an alrming fact that between ten and twenty percent of the gifted students become high school dropouts and a much larger number never attend college. Presently, …

Masters Theses

The compounds trisdiphenylphosphine(tricarbonyl) metal and trisdiphenylvinylphosphine(tricarbonyl) metal of molybdenum and tungsten were prepared. These compounds were allowed to react with diphenylvinylphosphine and diphenylphosphine, respectively, in the presence of azobis(2-methyipropio)nitrile or potassium t-butoxide to yield the complex containing bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane as a chelated ligand.

The tris-substituted compounds showed a large degree of lability which prevented the isolation of the desired, (OC)3M(Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2)3, compound which contains three ditertiary phosphines acting as monodentate ligands.

Coordinated diphenylphosphine and diphenylvinylphosphine pentacarbonyl compounds of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten were prepared and allowed to react in …

Monetary Factors And The Business Cycles, Nattasin Chongsanguan Jan 1982

Monetary Factors And The Business Cycles, Nattasin Chongsanguan

Masters Theses

The emphasis in the study of economic fluctuations has been placed upon the disequilibrium nature of the growth process with private investment playing such a key role in generating oscillatory behavior. The view taken in this paper, however, is that fluctuations in aggregate economic activity are equilibrium phenomena. Expansionary and contractionary processes are considered as continuous adjustments along an equilibrium path through time.

The Hawtrey-Hicks monetary hypothesis is used in this study to explain irregular fluctuations in economic activity. Monetarist propositions together with rational expectations and dual-decision hypotheses are then drawn from the Hawtrey-Hicks analysis for the testing purposes. Quarterly …
