Referendum Issue: An Analysis Of Procedures Used In Past Issues And An Examination Of Procedures Unit Seven Schools May Utilize To Correct Building Problems In The Future, Charles L. Mcchesney

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is threefold: first, to examine and participate in the 1981 campaign for passage of a building referendum in Tolono Unit Seven Schools and to record the various roles of personnel and groups in the campaign; second, to analyze why the referendum failed by using the 1980 bond issue campaign and research of other successful school districts' building referendums for comparisons; and third, to examine alternatives for a possible third referendum by doing a cost analysis for renovation of each elementary school building versus construction of a new building.

The school board failed to pass a …

Coping With Enrollment And Revenue Declines In Assumption Community Unit District #9, Randolph L. Tinder Jan 1982

Coping With Enrollment And Revenue Declines In Assumption Community Unit District #9, Randolph L. Tinder

Masters Theses

As we proceed toward the end of the twentieth century, it has become increasingly clear that the future of public education in the United States is somewhat uncertain. This uncertainty is due to a number of causes: concern over discipline, lack of parental interest, decreasing enrollment, lack of quality teachers, and decreasing supplies of tax monies to fund the schools. Some of these reasons have more impact in one area than another, but the effect can be determined easily. Schools are faced with program cuts and diminution of services for the student population.

This field study addresses this problem as …

The Effects Of Total Communication On The Expressive Language Behavior Of Individuals Labeled Trainable Mentally Retarded, Lenore Aebischer Jan 1982

The Effects Of Total Communication On The Expressive Language Behavior Of Individuals Labeled Trainable Mentally Retarded, Lenore Aebischer

Masters Theses

The practice of total communication in language training for non-deaf individuals labeled mentally retarded has been guided by very little empirical evidence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of a total communication approach facilitates an increase in the frequency of expressive language behavior in children labeled trainable mentally handicapped. The three subjects studied, one male and two females, were selected on the basis of age and I.Q. They were enrolled in a self-contained, public school which was located in a rural area of Illinois. A multi-element baseline procedure was used. Stimuli were presented using …

A questionnaire composed of 26 items was designed to investigate attitudes toward the current guidance services from 1,664 respondents who were junior high students in Kaohsiung Metropolis, Taiwan, the Republic of China in 1981. Besides total students, the attitudes of the various grade levels and …

An Examination Of The Verbal-Performance Differences And The Bannatyne Pattern Of The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children-Revised, Susan Hanft Bowyer Jan 1982

An Examination Of The Verbal-Performance Differences And The Bannatyne Pattern Of The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children-Revised, Susan Hanft Bowyer

Masters Theses

Many psychologists use the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Revised (WISC-R) in the diagnosis of learning disabilities. They often place the results of the WISC-R into either the Bannatyne pattern or use the difference between the Verbal IQ and Performance IQ to help determine whether the child is learning disabled or non-learning disabled. This paper examined the feasibility of using either of these methods in determining learning disabilities. The case files of 300 children (211 males and 89 females) between the ages of 5 years, 10 months and 17 years, 3 months (X CA = 10.73 years, SD = …

A Room Of One's Own: The Women's Room, Lou Ellen Crawford Jan 1982

A Room Of One's Own: The Women's Room, Lou Ellen Crawford

Masters Theses

The recent resurgence of feminism has been accompanied by the development of feminist fiction. Identifying those characteristics by which feminist fiction adds to the American novel a new and valid perspective, feminist criticism has also flourished. Feminist critics agree that fiction with a new perspective demands critical evaluation from that same perspective; and Cheri Register provides a concise, thorough list of five elements which comprise effective feminist fiction. Of Register's five criteria, Carol Heilbrun stresses the equalizing, conciliatory influence of androgyny. Recent feminist authors have written many novels which perform one or more of the functions prescribed by Register. Three …

Virginia Woolf: A Study In Style, Gregory Lee Manifold Jan 1982

Virginia Woolf: A Study In Style, Gregory Lee Manifold

Masters Theses

Virginia Woolf is one of the eminent stylists of the twentieth century. This paper, "Virginia Woolf: A Study in Style", is an exploration of the use of stylistic technique in Mrs. Woolf's two most outstanding novels, Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse. The basic assumption of the paper is that the meaning of a work, especially the works of Mrs. Woolf, is as accessible through the study of style as it is through the more traditional study of content. Taking its cue from the works of Norman Holland and his "reader-response" criticism, the paper details four techniques of style …

Infinite Intellectual Leap-Frog: Tracing Three Character Voices Through Four Of Tom Stoppard's Works--Lord Malquist And Mr. Moon, Albert's Bridge, Jumpers, And Dirty Linen, Judy Laurene Donaldson

Masters Theses

Tom Stoppard (1937- ), British playwright, creates in his Absurd novel Lord Malquist and Mr. Moon (1966) three character voices that begin a debate on man's reason for existence. Instead of resolving the debate at the end of his novel, Stoppard, using the same character voices in various combinations, continues the debate in three of his later works: the plays Albert's Bridge (1968), Jumpers (1972), and Dirty Linen (1976). The three character voices include the realist's, who ties to make some sense out of the disorder of the world and to find his place in it; the manipulator's, who ignores …

The Pessimistic Themes Of The Mysterious Stranger As Reflected In Mark Twain's Previous Novels, Judy Dale Hill Walker Jan 1982

The Pessimistic Themes Of The Mysterious Stranger As Reflected In Mark Twain's Previous Novels, Judy Dale Hill Walker

Masters Theses

The purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate that the pessimism exhibited in the themes of The Mysterious Stranger is evident in the themes of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1874-1876), The Prince and the Pauper (1877-1882), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1876-1885), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1888-1889), and Pudd'nhead Wilson (1891-1894). The thesis also demonstrates that the pessimism becomes more dominate as the novels progress chronologically through the repetition of the themes and the increasing number of themes being treated.

The introduction briefly discusses the arguments over the origins of Twain's pessimism as set forth by …

Human Inspirations As The Connecting Links Of History: Demonstration Through Contrasts Of Imaginative Literature And Historical Record, Glenn W. Sunderland Jan 1982

Human Inspirations As The Connecting Links Of History: Demonstration Through Contrasts Of Imaginative Literature And Historical Record, Glenn W. Sunderland

Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to resolve three propositions. The first concerns the continuity of history. It maintains that the continuity of history is ensured by certain universals, or abstract human traits, pertaining to the history of civilization, and that particulars, or in this case, human inspirations, provide the connecting links that bind together those segments of history involving people, places, things, and events.

Secondly, it contends that all historical events result from the actions of people, and that no matter how large or small the event, each individual involved makes a purposeful historical contribution to it.

The third purpose demonstrates that …

Drawing Characteristics Of Electrogalvanized Steel Wires., Chi-Yuan Tsao Jan 1982

Drawing Characteristics Of Electrogalvanized Steel Wires., Chi-Yuan Tsao

Masters Theses

"As a means of investigating the often adverse drawing behavior of electrogalvanized steel wire, drawing experiments were conducted on a variety of industrially-supplied and laboratory-prepared electroplated steel wires. Back-flow and shaving appeared to be the mechanisms by which sizeable zinc losses occurred. Performance during drawing and the quality of the product depended upon both the characteristics of the plating and the drawing process variables. Grain size, grain texture, and surface 'flatness' can affect the required drawing force, surface finish and level of zinc retention. Low die angles and large reductions offered greatest efficiencies with minimum zinc loss"--Abstract p. ii

Tristan Und Isolde: Gottfried's Paradigm For Emancipation, Elvira Borgstadt Dec 1981

Tristan Und Isolde: Gottfried's Paradigm For Emancipation, Elvira Borgstadt

Masters Theses

The romance is seen as a paradigm for emancipation in which Gottfried von Strasshurg deals with -the search for selfactualization and individualism which began to manifest itself in Western medieval society. The paradigm consists of two phases, entailing six consecutive steps of interaction between individual and society: the first poses the problem of alienation and is initiated by (l) the education of the individual which leads to (2) his/her isolation from mainstream society and ends in (3) the individuals attempt to gain full integration; the second phase deals with the consequences of alienation and brings a solution in that (4) …

Prompts And Feedback As A Means Of Increasing A Customer Service Behavior In A Family Restaurant, David B. Lennox Dec 1981

Prompts And Feedback As A Means Of Increasing A Customer Service Behavior In A Family Restaurant, David B. Lennox

Masters Theses

Although waiters and waitresses traditionally receive a gratuity based upon quality of service from customers, it may be difficult for them to interpret the amount of the gratuity as an indicator of good service or bad service. This ambiguity could be a result of different amounts of customer checks or faulty comparisons of total dollar amounts (total for the working shift) without taking into consideration the total dollar amount of the customer checks or the number of customers served. This study was conducted to provide accurate information for waitresses regarding gratuity percentage received from customers while monitoring its effects on …

Catalogs of other twelfth century monastic libraries were compared with the works identified in the …

Matching-To-Sample In The Pigeon: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Correction And Noncorrection Procedures, Deborah Lou Grossett Dec 1981

Matching-To-Sample In The Pigeon: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Correction And Noncorrection Procedures, Deborah Lou Grossett

Masters Theses

Contradictory results concerning the effect that presence or absence of a correction procedure has on matching-to-sample were obtained by past studies (Carter and Werner, 1978; Thomas, 1979). Carter and Werner (1978) reported that exposure to a correction procedure resulted in an increase in accuracy, while Thomas (1979) found no difference between the noncorrection and correction procedures. The present study showed that exposure to a correction procedure resulted in an increase in accuracy in comparison to a noncorrection procedure during acquisition, but not during maintenance.

Past studies (Holt and Shafer, 1973; Thomas, 1979), using a correction procedure, showed that presence of …

The Perceived Utility Of The Job Model As A Planning Document For Faculty Members, Victoria Kai-Cacho Dec 1981

The Perceived Utility Of The Job Model As A Planning Document For Faculty Members, Victoria Kai-Cacho

Masters Theses

A job model for faculty activity plans was developed based on an interview and a questionnaire response from 14 Western Michigan University professors. Perceived accuracy and usefulness of the job model were measured by a questionnaire designed by the investigator. Responses were analyzed by computing the mean ratings of each item included in the questionnaire. The job model was perceived as an accurate and useful instrument for faculty activity plans, self-development and faculty evaluation. However, methodological limitations suggest that further empirical research with a large sample and participation of administrative officers and students, in addition to faculty members, will be …

Petrology Of Fluvial And Shoreline Sands In A Modern Arc-Trench Gap, Guatemala, James Robert Bartel Dec 1981

Petrology Of Fluvial And Shoreline Sands In A Modern Arc-Trench Gap, Guatemala, James Robert Bartel

Masters Theses

Petrographic studies of modern sands, derived from areas with known source rocks, climate, relief, environments of deposition, and tectonic setting, are essential for compiling compositional models for ancient sandstones. The Pacific coastal plain of Guatemala is terminated 25-60 km inland by the steep slopes of a row of active Quaternary volcanic and granitic rocks.

Sands being deposited on the coastal plain by the Rio Nahulate, which drains the older volcanic and granitic terrane, show significant compositional differences with those supplied by the Rio Samala, which drains an area dominated by active volcanism: Q9F35L56 vs. Q …
