Cyclodextrin Assisted Enantiomeric Recognition Of Amino Acid Imides And Toward Synthesis Of Dolabellane Diterpenoid B, Pareshkumar Patel Aug 2005

Cyclodextrin Assisted Enantiomeric Recognition Of Amino Acid Imides And Toward Synthesis Of Dolabellane Diterpenoid B, Pareshkumar Patel

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There is a strong market demand for enantiomerically pure drugs. One solution to this problem is to develop a simple methodology for transferring synthetically designed racemic drugs into optically pure ones. Many synthetic drugs are by nature amides, therefore, amino acid based models for transformation of racemates into optically pure compounds were selected for this study. Formation of self-assembly molecular aggregates of properly modified amino acids was observed with and without the presence of cyclodextrins. Cyclodextrin assisted formation of polymer-like self-assemblies and enantiomeric resolution of these amino acids were studied using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, EleacroSpray Ionization Mass Spectroscopy …

New Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskites Obtained By Topochemical Methods, Doinita Neiner

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Topotactic routes have been used to produce new materials with tunable electronic and magnetic properties. The host materials were the single and triple layered Ruddlesden-Popper compounds, NaLnTiO4 (Ln = La and Gd) and A2La2Ti3O10 (A = Li and K). These compounds consist of [LnTiO4]- and [La2Ti3O10]2-, respectively, perovskite layers interleaved with two alkali metal ion strata. The topotactic routes used in this research were ion exchange and intercalation. Ion exchange was used to replace the cations in the interlayer space with a cationic unit: vanadyl or the transition metal ion, nickel. This ion exchange route opens the structure to further …

Neil Gaiman's American Gods: An Outsider's Critique Of American Culture, Mark Hill

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 2001, Neil Gaiman published American Gods, a novel of American life and mythology. As a British author living in the United States, Gaiman has a powerful vantage point from which to critique American culture, landscape, and ideology. Rich with re-invented deities, legends, mythic creatures, and folk heroes cast in a decidedly American mold, American Gods examines the American character, evaluating the myths and beliefs of the culture from the vantage point of an outsider. By examining the character's allegiance to particular cultural legacies (Wednesday as the American con artist, Shadow as the cowboy), I intend to assess this outsider's …

Attention And Memory Dysfunction In Pain Patients While Controlling For Effort On The California Verbal Learning Test-11, Kelly Curtis

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have reported that deficits in attention are often a common complaint in individuals suffering from pain and attentional impairment in patients with pain has been demonstrated on a variety of neuropsychological measures. Much of the research to-date, however, has not taken into account extraneous factors that may contribute to observed cognitive deficits. Using the California Verbal Learning Test - II, attention and memory performance was examined in two clinical populations (pain and mild traumatic brain injury) while controlling for effort using the Word Memory Test. Controlling for effort led to different explanations of poor performance on attention variables. …

Comorbid Anxiety And Depression: Do They Cluster As Distinct Groups In Youth?, Melinda Cannon Aug 2005

Comorbid Anxiety And Depression: Do They Cluster As Distinct Groups In Youth?, Melinda Cannon

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One of the most common pairs of co-occurring psychological disorders in children and adolescents is anxiety and depression. This high frequency of co-occurrence has led to research examining the structure of anxiety and depression, specifically the shared and unique aspects of these syndromes. The tripartite model accounts for the overlap between the disorders by suggesting that they are related because they share the feature of negative affect or general psychological distress. The model further proposes that they can be differentiated by their unique features of physiological hyperarousal (anxiety) and low positive affect (depression). Factor analytic research has shown that anxious …

The first essay evaluates the effectiveness of the "end of double tax" policy in stimulating an economic recovery by analyzing the transitional dynamics of the economy's aggregates toward the steady states. The effectiveness of this policy is compared with two alternative policies that reduce corporate income or personal income taxes. Although all of these tax policies are found …

Sex And Virtual Reality: Posture And Motion Sickness, Moira Flanagan Aug 2005

Sex And Virtual Reality: Posture And Motion Sickness, Moira Flanagan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It is well established that exposure to virtual motion environments (VME) can elicit postural instability (PI) in addition to motion sickness (MS). While research has found sex differences in motion sickness, the results of experimental studies are equivocal regarding these differences, and previous studies utilizing VME have failed to address the factor of sex differences in terms of hormonal fluctuations, which may also be instrumental in behavioral responses to VME, such as PI. The intent of this investigation was to determine whether exposure to VME, during various phases of the menstrual cycle (premenstrual, permenstrual, ovulation) would reveal sex differences in …

Silty soils are a common occurrence and can exhibit low strengths, and minimal bearing capacity, causing widespread construction and performance problems. These soils are highly moisture-sensitive and their stability is greatly influenced by the degree of densification achieved during compaction. The strength and stiffness of silty-subgrade soils is also greatly reduced when moisture infiltrates the compacted soil during post construction period. This investigation concentrated on further developing the description of the pumping problem for soils with high silt content and the development of guidelines for stabilization of problematic silts. Using documented field experiences of the DOTD districts, the study presents …

Embedding Sensory Preferences Into Toys To Enhance Toy Play In Toddlers With Disabilities, Cynthia Dicarlo May 2005

Embedding Sensory Preferences Into Toys To Enhance Toy Play In Toddlers With Disabilities, Cynthia Dicarlo

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Playing with toys as a means of environmental engagement has long been considered important in early child development (Messer, Rachford, McCarthy, & Yarrow, 1987; Wolery & Werts, 1994). However, children with highly significant disabilities often engage in toy play less frequently than their peers without disabilities (Blasco, Bailey, & Burchinal, 1993; Langley, 1985) and frequently need specialized support to promote toy play (Ivory & McCollum, 1999; Langley, 1985). Preference assessment technology was used to identify preferred sensory attributes. Those sensory attributes were embedded into a toy previously identified as nonpreferred based on selection and amount of toy play. Differences were …

Oxidation Chemistry Of Some Early Transition-Metal Layered Perovskites, Karachie Ward May 2005

Oxidation Chemistry Of Some Early Transition-Metal Layered Perovskites, Karachie Ward

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Early transition-metal oxyhalides, (MCl)LaNb2O7 (M = V, Cr) have been prepared by ion exchange of layered perovskite hosts, ALaNb2O7 (A = Li, Rb), with anhydrous metal halides, MCl2. These compounds contain low-valent metals (M2+) that are receptive to oxidation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows oxygen uptake at low temperatures (< 500 °C) and subsequent X-ray powder diffraction indicates that the host structure is maintained upon oxidation. Also through EDAX of the starting material and products, it has been found that there is a loss of chlorine upon oxidation. Thorough characterization of oxidation products will be presented and the ramifications of this chemistry on low-temperature topotactic formation of metal-oxide layers within perovskite hosts will be discussed.

Environmental Remediation With Fenton Reagents And Synthesis Of A Novel Halide Fluorescence Sensor, Guoxiang Xu May 2005

Environmental Remediation With Fenton Reagents And Synthesis Of A Novel Halide Fluorescence Sensor, Guoxiang Xu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and humic acid (SRHA) were used as dissolved organic matter (DOM) and were applied to probe the effect of DOM. Addition of DOM resulted in decreased first order rate constants for all species selected. The inhibition became more significant as the hydrophobicity of the species increased. The decrease could not be simply attributed to the binding of hydrophobic species to DOM. This can be explained by the physical isolation of iron (II), which binds to hydrophilic sites of DOM and is the hydroxyl radical generation site, from hydrophobic pollutants which bind to hydrophobic sites of …

Urban Landscape Change In New Orleans, La: The Case Of The Lost Neighborhood Of Louis Armstrong, Willard Fields May 2005

Urban Landscape Change In New Orleans, La: The Case Of The Lost Neighborhood Of Louis Armstrong, Willard Fields

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

While Jane Jacobs' frontal assault on "modern planning" is now over forty years old, communities around the United States are still struggling to deal with the legacy of modernist interventions that dramatically altered the historic urban form and culture of their downtowns. In the worst cases, whole zones were transformed into nearly unusable space. Reintegrating these lost spaces into the urban fabric is one of the most significant challenges of urban planners and designers today. Despite the ubiquity of lost spaces in American cities, comparatively little research has been done on the specific historic urban forms that were altered. This …
