LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of behavior subscales (inattention and impulsivity/overactivity), grade, and gender to unintentional injury risk and risk-taking behaviors among primary school-age students. The participants included the parents, guardians, and teachers of 109 primary school-age students. The students represented 1st - 3rd grades (n= 61) and 4th - 5th grades (n= 48). Parents completed three questionnaires including socio-demographics, Injury History Questionnaire, and Injury Behavior Checklist scale measures. Teachers reported each child's classroom and playground behavior on the Teacher Disruptive Behavior Disorder measure. Regression analyses revealed that impulsivity/overactivity and gender were significantly related to …
Synthesis Of Water Soluble Quantum Dots And Their Application For Enzymatic Activity Measurements, Ying Long
Synthesis Of Water Soluble Quantum Dots And Their Application For Enzymatic Activity Measurements, Ying Long
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Luminescenct Quantum Dots (QDs) intrigue the interest of researchers with their properties of high quantum yield, broad absorption and narrow emission spectra. Since prepared in organic solvents, QDs are not suitable for biological systems. In my study, several methods of "cap exchange" were tested to enable forming water-soluble QDs with minimal aggregation .The QD-mercaptoacetic acid is simple to synthesize and has good water-solubility, but the QDs are not stable. The direct attachment of peptide molecules to the QDs can passivate the surface and enable water solubility of QDs. It is only applicable for phytochelatin-related peptides, not for all kind of …

Mixing And Transport In The Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes Driven Flow Using The Topological Approximation Method, Stephen Michael Rodrigue
Mixing And Transport In The Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes Driven Flow Using The Topological Approximation Method, Stephen Michael Rodrigue
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Transport rates for the Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes driven flow are calculated using the lobe transport theory of Rom-Kedar and Wiggins through application of the Topological Approximation Method (TAM) developed by Rom-Kedar. Numerical studies by Ottino (1989) and Tsega, Michaelides, and Eschenazi (2001) of the driven or perturbed flow indicated frequency dependence of the transport. One goal of the present research is to derive an analytical expression for the transport and to study its dependence upon the perturbation frequency ù. The Kelvin-Stuart Cat Eyes dynamical system consists of an infinite string of equivalent vortices exhibiting a 2ð spatial periodicity in x …
Coping With Peer Victimization In Middle Childhood, Andrew Terranova Jr.
Coping With Peer Victimization In Middle Childhood, Andrew Terranova Jr.
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Currently, there are competing theories on whether children's coping responses are important determinants of future victimization (Perry citations; Limber, 2004), but little longitudinal research has been conducted to test the competing theories. Utilizing student and teacher reports, the current project examined the associations between children's responses to being bullied and victimization rates over a 12-month period in a sample of 296 middle school students. Broadly, the findings indicate that the ways youth respond to being bullied do not influence future victimization rates for most children. In fact, quite the opposite relationship was found. Higher levels of victimization at the beginning …
An Empirical Investigation Into The Performance Of High-Yield Bond Issuers, David Wolfe
An Empirical Investigation Into The Performance Of High-Yield Bond Issuers, David Wolfe
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A vast amount of academic research focuses on how bond issuance impacts the firm. Most recent research focuses on investment grade bonds and ignores non-investment grade bonds. Chapter 1 investigates firms issuing high-yield debt and the impact on their stock price by identifying determinants of the negative abnormal return that surrounds the announcement of an issue in the short-run. It is learned the length, coupon payment and amount of the issue are significant in explaining the CAR as is the age of the firm, first-time issuers and the marketplace where its stock trades. Firm performance ratios including the current and …
Governance Changes In Four Urban School Systems: A Comparative Analysis Of Preconditions For Adopting Reforms, Alessandra Jerolleman
Governance Changes In Four Urban School Systems: A Comparative Analysis Of Preconditions For Adopting Reforms, Alessandra Jerolleman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There is an almost universal belief that our school system is failing to educate its students. At the same time there is little agreement regarding what the problems are and how to correct them. Many urban school districts are turning to drastic reform measures, oftentimes attempting one major reform after another. This paper will address the question of whether cities which have opted to significantly change their educational system share any common characteristics related to this decision. In particular this paper will focus on four cities: Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. Given the current problems with education, and the …

Nanticoke, Pennsylvania: Impacts Of The Anthracite Coal Industry: A Case Study, Amber Elias
Nanticoke, Pennsylvania: Impacts Of The Anthracite Coal Industry: A Case Study, Amber Elias
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The story of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania from 1747 to 2006 is at the same time a look into the economic, political, and social aspects of America. From the birth of the American Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, Nanticoke played an important role in the economic health of the country. Profits from capital investment brought great wealth to the elite of the Wyoming Valley and financiers in New York and Philadelphia. The use of immigrant labor to maintain labor costs would presage corporate use of other groups. With the change in technology and the movement of capital elsewhere, Nanticoke faced the …
Racial Differences In The Gender Gap, Christy Duffel
Racial Differences In The Gender Gap, Christy Duffel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The gender gap is a political phenomenon that has been observed in the electorate since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, with women being more Democratic and liberal than men. Many studies have examined its existence among the white public, but little has been done to document its presence among blacks. This study examines the gender gap among whites and blacks and compares the results in order to see if there is a gender gap that exists among blacks and if it is similar to that for whites. Bivariate and multivariate analyses conducted for both blacks and whites find …

Determining What's Next: A Slow Movement For Chamber Orchestra, Matthew Golombisky
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This piece was started during the spring semester of 2005. The original conception was to write something that was both emotionally and mentally moving. The tempo is very slow, 54 beats per minute. The underlying theme is the harmonic movement of an E minor triad (E G B) moving to a F major 7th chord (F A C E). This chord is often approached using deceiving the listener with a do – re – ma – do melody in E minor, but when the final E is heard, it has become the 7th degree of the cadence chord, F major …

Performance And Total Pm Emission Factor Evaluation Of Expendable Abrasives, Kalpalatha Kambham
Performance And Total Pm Emission Factor Evaluation Of Expendable Abrasives, Kalpalatha Kambham
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Dry abrasive blasting is one of the most widely used methods of surface preparation. Air emissions from this process include particulate matter (PM) and metals. Spent abrasive generated from this process may be hazardous in nature. With increasing concern on health effects due to silica emissions from sand, use of alternative materials is suggested by health and regulatory agencies. The objective of this research was to evaluate performance of expendable abrasives and determine PM emission factors. Dry abrasive blasting was performed in an enclosed chamber and total PM samples were collected. Three commonly used expendable abrasives, coal slag, copper slag …
The Impact Of Preparation, Field Experience And Personal Awareness On Counsleors' Attitudes Toward Providing Services To Section 504 Students With Learning Disabilities, Dawn Romano
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Although school counselors strive to address the needs of all students, children with learning disabilities are often overlooked (Bergin & Bergin, 2005; Dahir, 2004). Under federal requirements, all federally funded schools are required to provide services to students with disabilities. Further, the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) model for school counseling programs stipulates that school counselors should ensure appropriate services are provided to all students (Milsom, 2002). Research has been completed regarding teachers' attitudes toward complying with the federal mandates (Bateman & Bateman, 2002; Rea & Davis-Dorsey, 2004). There is, however, considerably less information regarding school counselors' roles, and only …
Complex Crustal Stratification Within The Chugach Mountains, Southern Alaska, Leland O'Driscoll
Complex Crustal Stratification Within The Chugach Mountains, Southern Alaska, Leland O'Driscoll
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Strain within the crust is accommodated along vertical gradients, but a general characterization is difficult given the heterogeneity of the earth's outermost layer. The western termination of the Chugach metamorphic complex in southern Alaska includes a uniquely well exposed crustal section ideal for obtaining the vertical profile of a crustal section. Field studies in this area resulted in the characterization of deformational fabric and analysis of finite strain magnitude and orientation. These observational data provide constraints for kinematic modeling following results presented in Teyssier and Cruz (2004). By optimizing the fit between field data, finite strain analysis, and modeling, a …

This thesis considers the ramifications of the tourism boom along the parish's historically isolated and undeveloped coastline. Four coastal communities are examined: (1) Montegut, Pointe-aux-Chenes and Isle de Jean Charles; (2) Cocodrie and Chauvin; (3) Dulac; and (4) Dularge and Theriot. The research question is twofold: Why has coastal tourism been allowed to develop in the fragile wetlands that protect residents from dangerous storms?; and What does tourism development mean for …
Bank Efficiency Dynamics And Market Reaction Around Merger Announcement, Jamal Al-Khasawneh
Bank Efficiency Dynamics And Market Reaction Around Merger Announcement, Jamal Al-Khasawneh
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
We study, using the non-parametric data envelopment approach, we investigated the long-run profit efficiency dynamics and the short-run market reaction of nine pre-classified merger deals of merging and non-merging U.S. banks over the time period from 1992 to 2003. Our main results are as follows: First, merger deals that match least efficient acquirers with the least efficient targets could improve their profit efficiency four years following the merger event, unlike all other merger deals. Second, we find that mergers match least efficient acquirers with the least efficient targets could also achieve significant positive cumulative access returns (CARs) while all other …

Judging Judges: The Impeachment Of Federal Judiciary Members, Jennifer Goguen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There are many facets of impeachment that warrant examination. The impeachment inquiries of individual presidents and federal judges have all been studied in depth, but one aspect of impeachment still remains fundamentally unexplored: Under what circumstances will the House of Representatives vote to impeach a federal judge? This thesis is a systematic, empirical study of the impeachments of federal judges. All 65 impeachment inquiries brought against federal judges over the last 209 years are studied in order to assess a number of factors across every federal judicial impeachment inquiry in order to draw conclusions about the conditions under which federal …
Exhibiting Women: Sectional Confrontation And Reconciliation In The Woman's Department At The World's Exposition, New Orleans, 1884-85, Miki Pfeffer
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
At the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, the Woman's Department offered women of all regions of the country an opportunity to exhibit what they considered "woman's work." As women came together and attempted sectional reconciliation, controversy persisted, especially over the selection of northern suffragist Julia Ward Howe, author of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," as the Department's president. However, during the course of the event, which lasted from December 16, 1884 to May 31, 1885, New Orleanians and other southern women learned skills and strategies from participants and famous women visitors, and these southerners insinuated their voices into …
The Berlin Crisis Of 1958/59: A Case Of Pragmatic Restraint, Richard D. Williamson
The Berlin Crisis Of 1958/59: A Case Of Pragmatic Restraint, Richard D. Williamson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the 1958-1959 Berlin crisis as a diplomatic experience, conducted by the U.S. and U.S.S.R as an alternative to war. Both nations had nuclear weapon capabilities that could transform a local conflict into general war. The potential for disaster, plus other limits, made a series of diplomatic encounters the only productive option. The diplomatic course also shielded American and Russian interests indirectly related to the conflict. Each nation and its leader had pragmatic reasons for practicing restraint. These included conservation of assets, political stability, and most importantly, poor chances for sustainable gains. Limited war doctrine was influential in …
