Nanopore Detector Feedback Control Using Cheminformatics Methods Integrated With Labview/Labwindows Tools, Srikanth Sendamangalam

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Single biopolymers (DNA, RNA, or polypeptide) can be examined using an alpha-hemolysin channel detector. When a biopolymer is present in an alpha-hemolysin channel it can produce a highly structured ionic current blockade pattern, where the lifetimes at various sub-blockade levels reveal information about the kinetics of the biopolymer. Here we describe integration of LabVIEW/LabWindows automation capabilities with the "in-house" Channel Current Cheminformatics (CCC) software. Data acquired with LabVIEW/LabWindows is passed to the CCC software, on a streaming real time basis, for analysis and classification. The classification results are then quickly returned to the LabVIEW/LabWindows automation software for experimental feedback control. …

The Mineralogy, Geochemistry And Phosphate Paragenesis Of The Palermo #2 Pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, James Nizamoff Aug 2006

The Mineralogy, Geochemistry And Phosphate Paragenesis Of The Palermo #2 Pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, James Nizamoff

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An investigation of the beryl-phosphate subtype Palermo #2 pegmatite, located in the Grafton pegmatite field of New Hampshire, has revealed a large number of phosphate species. Late-stage, carbonate-bearing aqueous fluids have metasomatically altered primary phosphates producing a suite of nearly forty species of secondary phosphates. The secondary phosphates at Palermo #2 are a result of alteration of primary phosphates and associated silicate, carbonate, sulfide, arsenide and oxide minerals locally present in the core margin. Concomitant alteration of these associated minerals contributes the necessary ions to the hydrothermal fluids responsible for the formation of the diverse suite of secondary phosphates. Alteration …

Value Creation Through Joint Venture And Strategic Alliance Formation, Elisabeta Pana Aug 2006

Value Creation Through Joint Venture And Strategic Alliance Formation, Elisabeta Pana

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the price reaction to the announcements of joint venture and strategic alliance formation, the main determinants of the partnering firm's choices to enter a specific joint venture and a specific strategic alliance, and the impact of such alliance formation on partnering firms' valuation. The analysis of the price reaction at the announcement of alliance formation indicates that market can distinguish between value creating and non-value creating alliances. I also provide evidence supporting the argument that alliance formation is not a random process. A firm's choice of entering an alliance designed as diversifying or non-diversifying strategy is a …

Guilty Pleasures: Narrative Craft And Mass Appeal In The Newgate Calendar, Aimee Rust Aug 2006

Guilty Pleasures: Narrative Craft And Mass Appeal In The Newgate Calendar, Aimee Rust

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Newgate Calendar, one of the earliest true crime documents, has rarely been studied. This paper aims to demonstrate that these texts illuminate various aspects of the culture that both produced and consumed the narratives the Calendar contains. In particular, I have focused on two different categories of crimes against the body. The Calendar's early volumes, which were published while state-sponsored punishment was still a public spectacle, offer several accounts that deal with the confinement and torture of living victims. Later volumes do not include torture narratives. Instead, anxiety over the treatment of dead bodies caused an increased interest in …

Renegotiating Democracy In Public Space, Anna Brand Aug 2006

Renegotiating Democracy In Public Space, Anna Brand

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Dissent is intricately linked to the qualities of public space. While the First Amendment protects dissent, historical legal and social mechanisms have regulated protest and its relationship with public space. In the latter half of the twentieth century, a rigorous legal framework has emerged to both protect and regulate protest. Yet free speech rights are highly contested. The media are complicit in relating protesters to violence. This perception has been thoroughly constructed in the media since the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in 1999. The September 11th terrorist attacks have further amplified concerns for security in public spaces. The …

SELA is a large scale project that once complete, will improve the channels and the pumping stations in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Tammany parishes. FEMA has limited sources for non-structural mitigation projects. …

Improving Performance Of Spatial Network Queries, Elias Ioup Aug 2006

Improving Performance Of Spatial Network Queries, Elias Ioup

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Spatial network queries, for example KNN or range, operate on systems where objects are constrained to locations on a network. Current spatial network query algorithms rely on forms of network traversal which have a high complexity proportional to the size of the network making, them poor for large real-world networks. In this thesis, an alternative method of approximating the results of spatial network queries with a high level of accuracy is introduced. Distances between network points are stored in an M-Tree index, a balanced tree index where metric distance determines data ordering. The M-Tree uses the chessboard metric on network …

Steady State And Transient Dynamical Systems Analysis Of Uncoupled Roll Response For A Traditional Versus Advanced Hull Form, Sarah Eileen Juckett Aug 2006

Steady State And Transient Dynamical Systems Analysis Of Uncoupled Roll Response For A Traditional Versus Advanced Hull Form, Sarah Eileen Juckett

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The two ships represented in this thesis are dramatically different in design, but both exhibit similar properties such as length and breadth. The traditional hull form is represented by a typical flare-sided design with a forward reaching bow while the advanced hull form has a modified tumblehome and a truncated bow. The difference in shapes provides an interesting problem, comparing the roll responses for these two very different vessels while keeping certain shape parameters such as length, beam, and draft constant.

External Support Vector Machine Clustering, Charlie Mcchesney Aug 2006

External Support Vector Machine Clustering, Charlie Mcchesney

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The external-Support Vector Machine (SVM) clustering algorithm clusters data vectors with no a priori knowledge of each vector's class. The algorithm works by first running a binary SVM against a data set, with each vector in the set randomly labeled, until the SVM converges. It then relabels data points that are mislabeled and a large distance from the SVM hyperplane. The SVM is then iteratively rerun followed by more label swapping until no more progress can be made. After this process, a high percentage of the previously unknown class labels of the data set will be known. With sub-cluster identification …

An Effective Dynamic Handoff Support For Mobile Media Network, Aravinth Nallusamy

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Mobility is the most important feature of a wireless cellular communication system. Usually, continuous service is achieved by supporting handoff (or handover) from one cell to another. Handoff is the process of changing the channel associated with the current connection while a call is in progress. It is often initiated either by crossing a cell boundary or by deterioration in quality of the signal in the current channel. In this thesis, the different types of handoff controlled mechanisms are proposed and analyzed by passing the parameters offset address, Header information associated with the file, bit rate and bit resolution. The …

Building Metal-Anion Layers Within A Preovskite Host, Xiao Zhang Aug 2006

Building Metal-Anion Layers Within A Preovskite Host, Xiao Zhang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Alkali metal halide layers were constructed within Dion-Jacobson (DJ) layered perovskites by a two-step sequential intercalation method. Reductive intercalation with an alkali metal, followed by oxidative intercalation with chlorine gas, leads to the formation of compounds of the general formula, (A2Cl)LaNb2O7 (A = Rb, Cs). Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data shows that an alkali metal halide layer is formed between the perovskite blocks. The alkali metal cation is eight-coordinate with 4 oxygens from the perovskite layer and 4 chlorides from the new halide layer; this environment is similar to cesium in the CsCl structure. Thermal analysis indicates that …

Adrift, Alexis Wiggins Aug 2006

Adrift, Alexis Wiggins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Adrift is a novel about Telemaka Miller, a beautiful young woman who cannot say no to men as a result of her father's abandoning her when she was young. Loosely based on Homer's epic poem The Odyssey (in which Odysseus' son, Telemakos, sets out to look for his lost father), the novel traces Telemaka's search for her father through an endless string of lovers. The novel opens in 2005, when Telemaka is in her late twenties, and works its way backward through her twenties, teens, and adolescence to the moment in her childhood when her father left the family.
