Counselor Educators' Perceptions Of Their Doctoral Level Teaching Preparation, Stephanie F. Hall May 2007

Counselor Educators' Perceptions Of Their Doctoral Level Teaching Preparation, Stephanie F. Hall

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examined experiences in doctoral counselor education programs that prepare graduates to teach at the university level, and perceptions of the effectiveness of those experiences. There is an abundance of research in the field of higher education that raises the concern that many Ph.D. graduates are aptly prepared researchers, but are not able to teach effectively. Despite the fact that research in the field points to the problem of inadequate teaching preparation, there has been no known research conducted to examine what experiences in doctoral training are perceived as effective for teaching preparation. The major contribution of this research …

Motivational Factors Underlying College Students' Decisions To Resume Their Educational Pursuits In The Aftermath Of Hurricane Katrina, Theresa M. Phillips

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

College student persistence has been the central focus of higher education for decades. Specifically, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have directed their attention to increasing the retention and graduation rates of African American college students. Postsecondary institutions face greater challenges with college student persistence after a major crisis. This study explored college student persistence at a historically Black university ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Given the devastation caused by the storm, this study examined college students' decisions for continuing their educational pursuits at the historically Black university which is a temporary trailer campus created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency …

On The Crest Of A (Short) Wave: The Rise And Fall Of International Radio Broadcasting, Robert L. Dunn May 2007

On The Crest Of A (Short) Wave: The Rise And Fall Of International Radio Broadcasting, Robert L. Dunn

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Since 1927 international broadcasters have spanned oceans and transcended borders through the use of shortwave radio. In the beginning of the 21st century, some longtime shortwave stations have sharply cut back their English language services, particularly to North America and the Pacific region; at least one station has signed off forever. This paper examines the history of shortwave broadcasting--how it came to be, how it was used and by whom. Through interviews with broadcasters and listeners, it also explores the nature of the shortwave "experience"--especially how shortwave listening is different from listening to other media. Finally, this paper looks at …

The New Orleans Grocery Man: Ferrara Supermarket's Mr. Merrill, Amy Marie Ferrara May 2007

The New Orleans Grocery Man: Ferrara Supermarket's Mr. Merrill, Amy Marie Ferrara

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Like many Sicilians who immigrated to Louisiana in the late 1800s, my family set up a corner grocery in New Orleans. From this small store grew a business that became New Orleans' oldest family-owned grocery. Ferrara Supermarket, however, eventually feuded my father and aunt, dividing our family. Grandpa didn't understand how a business, which had supported his family for nearly a century, had separated two of his children. He seemed to favor my aunt over my father, and I lost much of my respect for him. It wouldn't be until I evacuated with my grandparents during Hurricane Katrina that I …

Fatigue Microcracking Of Composite Material Im7/977-2, Michael Dana Holt May 2007

Fatigue Microcracking Of Composite Material Im7/977-2, Michael Dana Holt

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The application of an ultralight linerless composite fuel tank to a man-rated, reusable launch vehicle requires greater understanding of the micro-fracture behavior which can lead to propellant permeation through the tank wall. Transverse matrix cracks in unidirectional wound, or placed, plies can provide a path for permeation of pressurized fluid if the cracks interlink from the interior to the exterior of the tank wall. Following research on an energy based fracture mechanics approach to composite microcracking, experiments in fatigue were run on IM7/977-2 cross-ply laminates. Using a modified Paris Law approach, microcracking fatigue data is presented over a wide range …

Historical Land Fragmentation And Its Effects On Genetic Diversity And Parasitism Of Island Populations Of Podarcis Erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), Heather Hurston May 2007

Historical Land Fragmentation And Its Effects On Genetic Diversity And Parasitism Of Island Populations Of Podarcis Erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), Heather Hurston

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Pleistocene land bridge islands in the Aegean Sea make an ideal natural experimental system for testing how island age, area and isolation affect genetic variation. My research focuses on the population genetics of the Aegean wall lizard Podarcis erhardii (Lacertidae, Reptilia), which because of its wide distribution, and poor dispersal abilities is a sensitive indicator of fragmentation history. I predict that genetic diversity will be positively correlated with island area and negatively correlated with age. I also predict that island characteristics, host genetic variability or grazing may impact parasite prevalence. Findings showed that larger islands maintained more genetic diversity …

Essays On The Impact Of Antitrust Regulation On Corporate Mergers And Divestitures, Adel Bino May 2007

Essays On The Impact Of Antitrust Regulation On Corporate Mergers And Divestitures, Adel Bino

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A merger requires at least one of two separate yet equally important sets of negotiations. The first involves merging parties to discuss issues related to the terms of the merger, including target firm's valuation. The second resolves disputes between the merging parties and the government regulatory agency over the potential anticompetitive impact of the merger. In the first essay, I investigate the probability of completing an acquisition deal conditional on the government approval by applying a nested logit model. My results support the findings of Eckbo (1985), Coate, Higgins, and McChesney (1990), and Coate (2005) that mergers that are expected …

Linkages Between U.S Cross-Border Portfolio Equity Flows And Equity Markets, Joseph Jerome French May 2007

Linkages Between U.S Cross-Border Portfolio Equity Flows And Equity Markets, Joseph Jerome French

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There is an ongoing debate over the role that equity markets play in determining and influencing international equity flows. The first chapter of this dissertation describes the large portfolio equity flows into China and India, in order to understand the buying behavior of US investors. The rapid growth of the Chinese and Indian economies, coupled with the recent development and liberalization of their financial markets has attracted significant portfolio investment from U.S. investors. It is commonly assumed that domestic investors have an informational advantage over foreign investors; however, some recent empirical literature has questioned this assumption. Essay one dissects the …

Analysis Of Oocyte Quality In The Rhesus Macaque (Macaca Mulatta), Stephanie Nichols May 2007

Analysis Of Oocyte Quality In The Rhesus Macaque (Macaca Mulatta), Stephanie Nichols

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Many primate populations face the threat of extinction due to habitat loss, intensive agriculture, hunting for meat, the pet trade and/or use in traditional medicines. An alternative approach to in situ conservation includes gene banking and the use of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Although many of these 'high-tech' solutions have not yet been proven viable for pragmatic wildlife conservation, basic research and development of these emerging tools can provide necessary information needed to optimize these techniques and institute ART as a routine practice in conservation efforts. A severely …

Preserving The Past For The Present: Courthouse Preservation And Community Values In Thomas County, Georgia, Lori Boyer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Thomas County Courthouse is 148 years old and is need of renovation. Special legal regulations require security upgrades, and doing so would compromise the architectural integrity of both the interior and exterior of the courthouse. The citizens of Thomas County have chosen to build a multipurpose judicial building to relieve the pressures and needs for security and space while renovating the historic courthouse to serve as a depository of its historical document. Within the context of preservation, the Thomas County Courthouse serves as an example of how a community can preserve the architecture of the building and keep this …

The Tigers And The Army: The Lsu School Of Medicine During World War Ii, Victoria Barreto May 2007

The Tigers And The Army: The Lsu School Of Medicine During World War Ii, Victoria Barreto

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The art of medicine has long found its most difficult challenges on fields of battle. During World War II, medical schools like the Louisiana State University School of Medicine were forced to play a larger role in total warfare. They served the medical needs of both civilians and soldiers by providing more doctors for the homefront and sponsoring medical units that served abroad. LSU sponsored the 64th General Hospital, which served in both the North African and Italian theaters. Clearly, then, the story of the LSU School of Medicine during World War II provides a glimpse into the intricate collision …

Storm water runoff from the examined elevated roadway section was analyzed for 14 storm events. The model used a linear function of antecedent dry time for the buildup model. The rating curve assumption was selected to estimate the pollutant transport capacity. In a further step the two were combined. The derived Buildup/Washoff model was calibrated for the collected data and precipitation data of the International Airport of New Orleans. The obtained …

Analysis Of Nanopore Detector Measurements Using Machine Learning Methods, With Application To Single-Molecule Kinetics, Matthew Landry May 2007

Analysis Of Nanopore Detector Measurements Using Machine Learning Methods, With Application To Single-Molecule Kinetics, Matthew Landry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

At its core, a nanopore detector has a nanometer-scale biological membrane across which a voltage is applied. The voltage draws a DNA molecule into an á-hemolysin channel in the membrane. Consequently, a distinctive channel current blockade signal is created as the molecule flexes and interacts with the channel. This flexing of the molecule is characterized by different blockade levels in the channel current signal. Previous experiments have shown that a nanopore detector is sufficiently sensitive such that nearly identical DNA molecules were classified successfully using machine learning techniques such as Hidden Markov Models and Support Vector Machines in a channel …

The beginning of the 21st Century has presented the United States with many new challenges. One of the most significant challenges we face are domestic and foreign security issues. Though traditionally the U.S. has relied on military and law enforcement agencies to address security related matters, in the wake of new pressing concerns such as terrorism, foreign fuel reliance and environmental degradation it has become apparent that other alternatives must be examined. One such alternative is the implementation of smart growth initiatives into current urban and sub-urban planning processes. The implementation of these initiatives into existing and new development will …

First Flush Characterization Of Storm Water Runoff, Simon Ringler May 2007

First Flush Characterization Of Storm Water Runoff, Simon Ringler

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This proposed research focused on the characterization of first flush in storm water runoff from elevated roadways, to assist the establishment of a storm water program and to facilitate the selection of treatment technology. Storm water runoff from highways transports a significant load of contaminants, especially heavy metals and particulate matter, to receiving waters. Heavy metals, either in dissolved or particulate bound phases, are unique in the fact that unlike organic compounds, they are not degraded in the environment. The objective was to develop a mass loading based diagram of the "first flush." In order to achieve this goal, a …

The last decade has demonstrated steady growth and utilization of Web Service technology. While Web Services have become significant in a number of IT domains such as eCommerce, digital libraries, data feeds, and geographical information systems, common portals or registries of Web Services require manual publishing for indexing. Manually compiled registries of Web Services have proven useful but often fail to include a considerable amount of Web Services published and available on the Web. We propose a system capable of finding, binding, and integrating Web Services into an index in an automated manner. By using a combination of guided search …

Planning For Chaos: Cluster Strategies Of Economic Development, Lisa Brosnan May 2007

Planning For Chaos: Cluster Strategies Of Economic Development, Lisa Brosnan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With this thesis I will attempt to demonstrate the value of using chaos theory as a framework for understanding the emergence and development of clusters as a strategy for economic development. The application of the principles of chaos theory will be used to judge the relative success of specific clusters through a case study approach and historical analysis to determine the change agents and other significant factors influential to the growth of economic clusters. Because clusters are turbulent, non-linear systems that are sensitive to endogenous and exogenous triggers, chaos theory may provide the conceptual foundation appropriate to the study of …
