Development Of Conduct Problems In Girls: Testing Theoretical Models And Examining The Role Of Puberty, Cedar W. O'Donnell
Development Of Conduct Problems In Girls: Testing Theoretical Models And Examining The Role Of Puberty, Cedar W. O'Donnell
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In an attempt to understand girls' involvement conduct problems, this dissertation first reviews two existing theoretical approaches that provide an explanation for the development of conduct problems. Specifically, the available literature on the development and correlates of conduct problems in boys suggests the subtypes of conduct disorder represent two developmental trajectories. The adolescent-onset pathway is associated with deviant peers and few characterological problems, where as the childhood-onset pathway is associated with emotion regulation deficits, negative parenting, callous and unemotional traits, and neurological deficits. Research also suggests a gender-specific model, the delayed-onset model, for the development of conduct problems in girls. …
Reducing The Rate Of Recidivism For First-Time Juvenile Offenders With The Parent Monitoring Program, Pmp: A Family Counseling Intervention Program, Rhonda C. Vappie-Aydin
Reducing The Rate Of Recidivism For First-Time Juvenile Offenders With The Parent Monitoring Program, Pmp: A Family Counseling Intervention Program, Rhonda C. Vappie-Aydin
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effectiveness of a family counseling intervention program called the Parent Monitoring Program (PMP) on reducing the rate of recidivism with first-time juvenile offenders in New Orleans, Louisiana. The PMP is a multimodal treatment intervention that combines individual, family, and group, counseling services to juvenile offenders and their families. Pugh, Force, Rault, and Triche (2000) reported that with effective and innovative family and community based intervention programs, juvenile offenders can be deterred from further delinquent behaviors. There is a great need for research studies to examine effective interventions that address reducing the rate of recidivism with juvenile …

Divergence Model For Measurement Of Goos-Hanchen Shift, Jeffrey Frank Gray
Divergence Model For Measurement Of Goos-Hanchen Shift, Jeffrey Frank Gray
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this effort a new measurement technique for the lateral Goos-Hanchen shift is developed, analyzed, and demonstrated. The new technique uses classical image formation methods fused with modern detection and analysis methods to achieve higher levels of sensitivity than obtained with prior practice. Central to the effort is a new mathematical model of the dispersion seen at a step shadow when the Goos-Hanchen effect occurs near critical angle for total internal reflection. Image processing techniques are applied to measure the intensity distribution transfer function of a new divergence model of the Goos-Hanchen phenomena providing verification of the model. This effort …
Applying Logic Modeling To The Higher Education Accreditation Process, Kenneth Frank Bolden
Applying Logic Modeling To The Higher Education Accreditation Process, Kenneth Frank Bolden
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, regional accreditation and the regional accreditation associations for higher education have experienced continuing criticism and become the objects of increased scrutiny. Higher education institutions look to the accreditation process as one of the principal means of justifying their actions and activities relative to their performance and results. Since the complaints and criticism directed toward higher education have not diminished but continued, and even increased, the regional accreditation associations find themselves to be the focus of similar complaints and criticisms. In the United States, we have no national system of accreditation. We rely on the actions and activities …
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Gbr 12909 Tropane And Azetidine Hybrid Analogues, Shaine A. Cararas
Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Gbr 12909 Tropane And Azetidine Hybrid Analogues, Shaine A. Cararas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The high affinity, selective dopamine transporter ligand GBR 12909 has served as a template for the design of two novel classes of dopamine transporter ligands. A series of 3-[2- (diarylmethoxyethyidenyl)]-N-substituted tropane derivatives were synthesized and the binding affinities of these compounds were determined at the dopamine (DAT), serotonin (SERT) and norepinephrine (NET) transporters in rat brain tissue preparations. The tropane derivatives were found to exhibit more potent affinity and selectivity for DAT than GBR 12909. From the SAR of the tropane analogues and GBR 12909, a novel series of 3-[2-(diarylmethoxyethylidenyl)]-Nsubstituted azetidine derivatives has been developed.
Automating Regression Test Selection For Web Services, Michael Edward Ruth
Automating Regression Test Selection For Web Services, Michael Edward Ruth
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
As Web services grow in maturity and use, so do the methods which are being used to test and maintain them. Regression Testing is a major component of most major testing systems but has only begun to be applied to Web services. The majority of the tools and techniques applying regression test to Web services are focused on test-case generation, thus ignoring the potential savings of regression test selection. Regression test selection optimizes the regression testing process by selecting a subset of all tests, while still maintaining some level of confidence about the system performing no worse than the unmodified …
Gendered Representations Of Jazz Vocal Artists: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Cd And Performance Reviews, And Interviews, Miroslava Jichova
Gendered Representations Of Jazz Vocal Artists: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Cd And Performance Reviews, And Interviews, Miroslava Jichova
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study of contemporary jazz discourse and gender applies the techniques of critical discourse analysis, inspired by M.A.K. Halliday's systemic functional linguistics and Norman Fairclough's qualitative critical discourse analysis, to explicate the unequal distribution of power in society as represented by the institutions of jazz and mass media, in discourse about jazz vocal artists. Specifically, the study focuses on the way the genres of jazz CD review, jazz performance review, and interviews with jazz artists – disseminated via the institutions JazzTimes and Live New Orleans – represent the artists' identities, roles, achievements and skills. Following Norman Fairclough and the feminist …
The Perspectives Of Male Inmates Regarding Their K-12 Educational Experiences, Shannon Paul Lafargue
The Perspectives Of Male Inmates Regarding Their K-12 Educational Experiences, Shannon Paul Lafargue
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
All school systems throughout the country serve students referred to as at risk. Research documents that these students are at a greater risk of dropping out of school due to characteristics that contribute to school disengagement. By exploring the perspectives of male inmates aged 18-30 regarding their educational experiences, this study's data illuminated how school personnel and the schooling process may theoretically contribute to negative outcomes such as incarceration. The focus of the study was to identify commonalities and phenomena in relation to educational experiences, school engagement levels, deviant behavior, and school staff-student interactions as related to the at-risk student …
Identification And Characterization Of Enzymes Involved In Post-Translational Modifications Of Phycobiliproteins In The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Crystal Miller
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research is to identify and characterize enzymes responsible for posttranslational modifications of phycobiliproteins (PBP) in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Asparagine 72 is methylated to produce gamma-N-methylasparagine on beta subunits of PBP in vivo. A candidate for this methyl transferase is CpcM (sll0487). Methylase assays showed that CpcM is specific for the beta subunits of PBP with no methylation on the homologous alpha subunits. CpcM methylates PBP after chromophorylation but before the PBP assemble into trimers. Candidates for the lyases responsible for attachment of phycocyanobilin to phycocyanin in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 are two cpeS-like …
Female Participation In The Informal Sector In Brazil In 1996 And In 2005, Carla Nimrichter
Female Participation In The Informal Sector In Brazil In 1996 And In 2005, Carla Nimrichter
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Social and economic changes that happened in Brazil in the 1990s have changed the organization of female employment in the country. In this study, I examine the participation of women in the informal sector in Brazil in 1996 and 2005. Using micro-level data from the Brazilian Monthly Employment Survey, I find Brazilian female workers became older, more educated, and that female informal employment increased over the period studied. Although selfemployment was reduced, an increase in wage-employment in informal manufacturing was noticed, which indicates growth in subcontracting. Higher share of female headed households, lower income and higher poverty levels were predominantly …
National Board Certification And School Leadership In Louisiana, Kathleen A. Severns
National Board Certification And School Leadership In Louisiana, Kathleen A. Severns
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The challenges of school accountability call for new models of school leadership. Teacher leaders are needed to create, implement, and sustain reform efforts. This study investigated whether a specific model of professional development, National Board Certification (NBC), can create sustained change aimed at improved school leadership. The research question which guided this study was: Does the National Board Certification professional development model contribute to school leadership in Louisiana? The state of Louisiana currently has approximately 1,000 teachers with National Board Certification (NBPTS, 2006f). These NBC teachers and approximately 3,000 non-NBC teachers received the online School Leadership Survey, which included survey …
Development Of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes As Organic Catalysts And Efficient Ligands In Palladium Mediated Transformations, Rohit Singh
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as appropriate replacements for phosphines in transition metal catalyzed cross-coupling chemistry. The advantages of NHCs over phosphines include ease of handling, minimal toxicity, stability and powerful electron donating properties. Improvement of catalytic processes has become increasingly relevant in light of prospective applications of organic transformations in industry as well as in synthetic laboratories. To that end, NHCs represent an important class of catalysts and catalyst modifiers which mandate continued research efforts. Prospective applications of processes catalyzed by NHCs and NHC-metal catalysts provide a strong impetus to develop them and related methodologies. This dissertation focuses on …

The Decline Of Fowler's Toad (Bufo Fowleri) In Southern Louisiana: Molecular Genetics, Field Experiments And Landscape Studies, Laura Sanders Vogel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Two of the most pervasive threats to species biodiversity are invasive species and habitat loss and degradation. Invasive species are often relatively insensitive to disturbance and many expand their range into disturbed and fragmented habitats. This dissertation uses an interdisciplinary approach to investigate how anthropogenic habitat disturbance is precipitating a range expansion in an invasive toad species, Bufo nebulifer, which is driving a decline in its native congener, B. fowleri. I employed a remote sensing and GIS study using historical data to compare changes in the two species distributions and habitat changes, a molecular genetic study to identify interspecific hybrids …

Surface Optochemical Sensors, Georgeta Crivat
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The objective of my research is to develop new surface optochemical sensors for studying cellular processes by investigating techniques to modify surface properties. The spectral characteristics of the modified surfaces and coatings are designed to show remarkable changes after interaction with analytes from biological fluids and cells. My studies focused on pancreatic cells and addressed the need for improved techniques to measure zinc release from pancreatic cells (chapter 3, 4) and to measure the metastasis potential of cancerous pancreatic cells (chapter 5). Chapter 3 describes the development of zinc sensing glass slides by conjugating a carboxylmodified ZnAF-2 to an amino …
Characterization Of Oligosaccharides And Nanoparticles By Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometry, Bing Guan
Characterization Of Oligosaccharides And Nanoparticles By Maldi-Tof Mass Spectrometry, Bing Guan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The possibilities of differentiating linkage positions and anomeric configurations of small oligosaccharides by negative ion mode MALDI using anion attachment followed by PSD are investigated. By careful initial adjustment of the focusing mirror ratios allowing acquisition of the peaks of interest within the same PSD segment, it is possible to obtain highly reproducible relative ion abundances. Discrimination of different linkage types is achieved by analysis of structurally-informative diagnostic peaks offered by PSD spectra of chloride adducts of oligosaccharides, whereas the relative peak intensities of selected diagnostic fragment pairs make differentiation of anomeric configuration possible. F- and Ac- cannot form anionic …
Two Essays Relating To Mutual Fund Performance, Steven J. Welch
Two Essays Relating To Mutual Fund Performance, Steven J. Welch
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In two unrelated papers, we examine different aspects of mutual fund performance and other issues. In the first chapter, we look at exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and how they differ from index funds in performance and tracking error. Using daily data and a more comprehensive sample than past research, we find abnormal returns associated with the ETFs are higher than the alphas of the index funds in most cases. The results are much more prevalent in funds that follow the S&P 500 than funds that do not. When examining the tracking errors, we find index funds are able to track their …
Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales: Rhetoric And Gender In Marriage, Andrea Marcotte
Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales: Rhetoric And Gender In Marriage, Andrea Marcotte
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the Middle Ages, marriage represented a shift in the balance of power for both men and women. Struggling to define what constitutes the ideal marriage in medieval society, the marriage group of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales attempts to reconcile the ongoing battle for sovereignty between husband and wife. Existing hierarchies restricted women; therefore, marriage fittingly presented more obstacles for women. Chaucer creates the dynamic personalities of the Wife of Bath, the Clerk and the Merchant to debate marriage intelligently while citing their experiences within marriage in their prologues. The rhetorical device of ethos plays a significant role for …
Chemical, Toxicological, And Microbial Characterization Of New Orleans Sediments Following Hurricane Katrina, Andrea Liebl
Chemical, Toxicological, And Microbial Characterization Of New Orleans Sediments Following Hurricane Katrina, Andrea Liebl
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast and storm surges breached levees flooding much of New Orleans, Louisiana. One month after the storm, sediment was collected and toxicity was tested using Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos. Sediments with the highest contaminant levels showed the highest embryonic mortality and most delayed development. However, no sediment caused an increased mutant frequency. When the most contaminated site was resampled in February, 2006 contaminant levels and toxicity decreased. During toxicity testing, approximately 20% of embryos incubated with sediment from one of these sites died and turned red. A red bacterium was …

Cheat River is a novel about balancing family obligations against self-preservation. That is what's at stake for Allison and Andrew McKenna, a pair of siblings in rural Appalachia who must endure their father's abandonment and their pregnant mother's breakdown. At first, the two find solace from their parents' problems on the banks of the river from which the novel takes its name. But eventually, Andrew's homosexual feelings drive him to the bohemian streets of Philadelphia in the early '90s where he falls in with political activists and a household of misfits. He disappears, and Allison comes to the city to …
Newer Versions Of The Same Thing, John Fields
Newer Versions Of The Same Thing, John Fields
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
I am interested in the role photographs play in the everyday life of contemporary society, and more specifically the people and memories that occupy those photographic images. In my work I attempt to take the specific moments caught in seemingly meaningless photographs and elevate their importance through painting and animation. I want to linger on the idea of experience and the closing gap between real-life experience and the experience gained through viewing man-made images.
Putting Makeup On Dead People, Jennifer Violi
Putting Makeup On Dead People, Jennifer Violi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Putting Makeup on Dead People is a collection of ten short stories narrated by Donna that relate key moments in her life from early childhood through her mid-thirties. Because of the author's belief in the circularity of time and of what makes up human identity (what we do, what happens to us, to whom we are related), the stories do not progress chronologically. The collection pays particular attention to Donna's relationship with key family members: her father Nicky, her mother Martha, her Uncle Lou, her Aunt Selena, and her siblings, Linnie and B. Many of the stories also attend to …

The purpose of the study will be to examine the consequences, links, and process of interaction among three key units of analysis: the plaintiffs, their lawyers, and one of the major defendants in the litigation, the …
Competition And Conflict: Maryland's First Ten Years, Matthew Edwards
Competition And Conflict: Maryland's First Ten Years, Matthew Edwards
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
England's first settlers arrived in Virginia hoping to achieve the same success Spaniards had in the West Indies. Yet, North America held little wealth in the forms of gold or silver and the hopes of finding a Northwest Passage proved fruitless as well. For over ten years British holdings in the New World showed little sign of producing profits. It was not until 1614, and the introduction of tobacco, that Virginians finally discovered a commodity that could be sold back in Europe. Tobacco cultivation, however, was not the only activity that offered the possibility of wealth. Between the years of …
Slapstick Carnage: The Absurd Universe Of Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian, James Marler
Slapstick Carnage: The Absurd Universe Of Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian, James Marler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the function and effect of black comedy in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. Several different explanations for the presence of comedy in such a relentlessly violent novel have been made: that this humor is simply a realistic depiction of the folksy, dry vernacular of the time; that it reinforces the idea that the characters are so morally bankrupt that they are able to make jokes in the midst of so much destruction; or, that it serves to keep the reader's sensibilities in a state of flux between attraction and revulsion: relieving tension, then …

Blackstone's Commentaries: Foothold Or Footnote In Louisiana's Antebellum Legal History, Ronald Fonseca
Blackstone's Commentaries: Foothold Or Footnote In Louisiana's Antebellum Legal History, Ronald Fonseca
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The judges of the Supreme Court of Louisiana issued a court order, in the year 1840, mandating a required reading course of legal materials for prospective bar applicants. Included in the list of materials was Sir William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Louisiana's legal system has, from its inception, been based on the civil law, a system tracing its roots back to Rome. The other organized system of law is the common law, which originated in the customs and judicial decisions of England, and is the legal system followed in the other forty-nine states. A question arises as …

The Southern Debate Over The Passage Of The Marshall Plan In Congress, 1947-1948, Traci Donellan Howerton
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
On June 5, 1947, Secretary of State George C. Marshall spoke at Harvard University and unveiled his plan for a comprehensive recovery program for Europe after the destruction of World War II. The European Recovery Program, also known as the "Marshall Plan", was designed to alleviate the economic and political crisis taking place in Europe. It was alos marketed as a weapon in the fight against the spread of communism. Because the Marshall Plan was received at home with mixed reviews, the job of the State Department was to sell the Marshall Plan, not only to Congress, but to the …

Evaluation Of Expressions With Uncertainty In Databases, Moginraj Mohandas
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Expressions are used in a range of applications like Publish/Subscribe, Ecommerce, etc. Integrating support for expressions in a database management system (DBMS) provides an efficient and scalable platform for applications that use Expressions. Support from uncertain data and expressions can be beneficial but not currently provided for. In this thesis, we investigate how expressions with uncertainty can be integrated in a DBMS like other data. We describe the underlying theory and implementation of UNXS (UNcertain eXpression System), a system that we have developed to handle uncertainty in expressions and data. We develop a theoretical model to compare and contrast different …
