There is a need to evaluate different technologies such as FeCl2, H2O2 and O2 addition as odor and corrosion control alternatives to determine required dosages and detention times. The goal of this research is to study the kinetics of H2S removal using the techniques commonly employed in sanitary sewer systems to determine the effectiveness of each process. To achieve this objective a laboratory simulation of these chemicals additions was carried out using completely mixed BOD bottles as batchreactors. The BOD reactor was filled with a 7 mg/L H2S solution. FeCl2, 50%-H2O2, O2 and a combination of FeCl2 and H2O2were added …
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
Counselors' Perceptions Of Identity And Attitudinal Differences Between Counselors And Other Mental Health Professionals, Latifey B. Lafleur
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A strong, distinctive professional identity is essential for the survival of mental health professions (Fall, Leviov, Jennings, & Eberts, 2000). Although the literature of the various mental health professions offers varying definitions of professional identity, differentiating their services from one another continues to be a problem (Remley & Herlihy, 2005). This uncertainty inhibits uniformity within professions, and causes confusion within the public as to what each mental health field actually does and does not do. Psychologists and social workers have dedicated years of effort to define their professions, providing extensive literature rooted in the history, values, beliefs, and the knowledge …
Effects Of Habitat Degradation On The Evolutionary Dynamics Of Populations In A Rainforest Cycad (Gymnospermae), Cristina Lopez-Gallego
Effects Of Habitat Degradation On The Evolutionary Dynamics Of Populations In A Rainforest Cycad (Gymnospermae), Cristina Lopez-Gallego
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In addition to habitat loss and fragmentation, habitat degradation can have important consequences for biodiversity and population persistence, including effects on ecological and genetic processes beyond decreased demographic viability and the loss of genetic variation. Particularly interesting is the potential for evolutionary changes and adaptation to degraded habitats, that can affect population viability even in the short-term. Here, I explore how environmental changes after habitat degradation affect the evolutionary dynamics of populations of the rainforest cycad Zamia fairchildiana, specifically how habitat degradation affects gene dispersal, inbreeding, directional selection, and genotype-by-environment interactions, and the potential for genetic differentiation between populations. Colonies …
Relationships Of Self-Efficacy, Exercise, Social Support To Strain And Burnout In University Faculty, Mark P. Kelly
Relationships Of Self-Efficacy, Exercise, Social Support To Strain And Burnout In University Faculty, Mark P. Kelly
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between occupational selfefficacy, exercise behaviors, and social support with strain and burnout in faculty. Previous studies have shown each variable is associated with reduced strain. The Demand-Control- Supports Theory by Karasek and Theorell (1990) asserts when an individual is in a work situation characterized by high demands, low control, and low social support they will tend to have strain symptoms. Burnout is another psychological strain symptom common in the teaching profession. The current study used the three different variables mentioned and determined their relationships to reported strain and burnout. A …
Long And Short-Term Morphologic Evolution And Stratigraphic Architecture Of A Transgressive Tidal Inlet, Little Pass Timbalier, Louisiana, Michael David Miner
Long And Short-Term Morphologic Evolution And Stratigraphic Architecture Of A Transgressive Tidal Inlet, Little Pass Timbalier, Louisiana, Michael David Miner
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The majority of changes to barrier island shorelines can be attributed to tidal inlet processes, and therefore an understanding of these processes is important to effectively manage barrier systems. High rates of relative sea-level rise within the Mississippi River delta plain have resulted in rapid landwardmigration of barrier island and tidal inlet systems. Moreover, ongoing conversion of back barrier and interior wetlands to open water increases tidal exchange. Enlarging tidal prisms, together with the landward migration of the barrier systems, results in a dynamic environment within which tidal inlets undergo vast changes in position, geometry, and shoreline morphology. Historic bathymetric …
Egyptian-British-American Triangular Relations In The 1920s: Egypt's Efforts To Break Free Of Colonial Tutelage, Scott Manguno
Egyptian-British-American Triangular Relations In The 1920s: Egypt's Efforts To Break Free Of Colonial Tutelage, Scott Manguno
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The triangular relationship amongst Egypt, Great Britain, and the United States serves as a microcosm for the larger international context of the 1920s. Importantly, the relationship reveals much about Egypt's decolonization and national development strategies in the 1920s. The increasing internationalism of the 1920s offered new avenues to pursue national interests. Because of a changing a status quo, Egypt had an opportunity to reform old institutions and choose new paths of national development. Despite the colonial baggage carried by Egypt, national strategies near the end of the 1920s placed the country in a position to exert leverage on the international …
Flow-Transport Modeling And Quantification, Karim El Kheiashy
Flow-Transport Modeling And Quantification, Karim El Kheiashy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Several research investigations have been conducted on the flow and sediment transport over bed forms in alluvial rivers (e.g. mean flow field, turbulence, shear partitioning, bed load transport and bed form geometry). Much of this work was either laboratory studies or small scale field investigations. Recently, advance in technology have improved the way data are collected and analyzed, e.g. flow data, velocity data and detailed bathymetric information that provide greater knowledge about the bed form geometry. Recent advances in computing power have also reduced the computational restrictions on using three dimensional numerical models in modeling flow applications to predict the …

Thermal And Transport Properties Of Layered Silicate Nanomaterials Subjected To Extreme Thermal Cycling, Vilarino Sofia Martinez
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There is a raising need to design a safe and efficient cryogenic fuel tank for the new generation of reusable launch vehicles. The new tank design focuses on composite materials that can achieve the drastic reduction of empty/non-payload and structural weight. In addition to the materials to be compatible with cryogenic temperatures, interior components of the vehicle may be subjected to significantly elevated temperatures due to heat conduction from the vehicle surfaces during and after atmospheric re-entry. Therefore, there is the need to understand the performance of the composites after experiencing extreme thermal environments. Polymer-layered nanocomposites were studied to determine …
Individuation And The Demeter-Persephone Myth In Charlotte Bronte's Shirley, Kristin Voss
Individuation And The Demeter-Persephone Myth In Charlotte Bronte's Shirley, Kristin Voss
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Inconsistencies in character and structural development inform criticism of Charlotte Bronte's Shirley. I argue that the phases of emotional and physical illness that the heroine, Caroline Helstone, undergoes mirror the stages of individuation observed by Jung. I suggest that Bronte uses the Demeter-Kore myth—which Jung saw as an archetypal expression of female transformative experience—as an underlying plot structure for her novel. The division of the novel into three volumes mirrors significant stages of individuation and major plot shifts in the "Hymn." Persephone's abduction and Demeter's wandering correspond with Caroline's sudden depression and with the shadow phase of individuation. Demeter's entrance …

Two Essays On The Predictability Of Asset Prices: "Benchmarking Problems And Long Horizon Abnormal Returns" And, "Low R Square In The Cross Section Of Expected Returns", Benito Sanchez
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of two essays on predictability of asset prices. "Benchmarking problems and long horizon abnormal returns" and, "Low R-square in the cross section of expected returns". Long run abnormal returns following Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), Seasoned Equity Offers (SEO) and other firm level events are well documented in the finance literature. These findings are difficult to reconcile in an efficient markets world. I examine the seriousness of potential benchmarking errors on the measurement of abnormal returns. I find that the simpler, more parsimonious models perform better in practice and finds that excess performance is not predictable regardless of …

Embedded Multilayer Thin Film Stacks As Polarizing Beam Splitters And Wave Retarders Operating Under Condition Of Frustrated Total Internal Reflection, Perla Siva Reddy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The polarization properties of embedded centro-symmetric and periodic multilayer stacks under conditions of frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) are considered. The centro-symmetric multilayer stack consists of a high-index center layer sandwiched between two identical low-index films and high-index – low-index bilayers repeated on both sides of the central trilayer maintaining the symmetry of the entire stack. The periodic multilayer consists of periodically repeated low-index – high-index bilayers. Each multilayer stack is embedded in a high-index prism. Embedded centro-symmetric multilayer stacks are designed to function as efficient polarizers or polarizing beam splitters (PBSs) under conditions of FTIR over an extended range …
Highly Ordered Hexagonal Mesoporous Silica As Hosts And Templates For Encapsulation Of Germanium Semiconductor Clusters, Yi Wang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Highly ordered mesoporous MCM-41 silica particles with several morphologies have been synthesized in an alkaline solution using cationic amphiphilic surfactant CTAB as template. The size and the morphology were controlled by varying the reaction temperature and time or by controlling the crystallization process of silica. The characterization results showed that highly ordered mesoporous particles were obtained, which had smooth surface, controllable size and high thermal stability. Germanium semiconductor clusters were encapsulated into hexagonal MCM-41 nanoparticles with a uniform pore size around 500nm via three different synthesis routes (H2 reduction, Vapor phase epitaxy and Na-Naphthalene reduction). Crucial parameters and experimental skills …

Invasive fungal infections are prevalent and often deadly in immunocompromised patients. There continues to be a pressing need for the development of novel antifungal compounds since there are currently only 13 compounds licensed for the treatment of invasive fungal infections and antibiotic-resistant strains have been emerging. CAY-1 is an antifungal steroidal saponin which was isolated from the fruit of the cayenne pepper plant in 0.1% yield. In Vitro studies of CAY-1 have shown it to be an effective antifungal agent against sixteen pathogenic fungal strains and it showed no cytotoxicity toward mammalian cells up to 100 ìg/mL. The development of …
A Methodological Exploration Of Mailed Survey Research In A Post Disaster Setting, Michelle Gremillion
A Methodological Exploration Of Mailed Survey Research In A Post Disaster Setting, Michelle Gremillion
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper analyzes and assesses the success and failures of the implemented methods of two mailed survey research projects conducted in post-Katrina New Orleans. Mailed survey research is an essential part of the recovery process following a major disaster in which people have been displaced. A survey can provide insight into how many residents intend to return to the area as well as resident needs and concerns. Traditional methods alone are inadequate in a post-disaster setting and supplemental measures must be taken. The collected data from a survey in this setting will be unrepresentative of the pre-disaster population. Spatial analysis …

Between Two Giant Sounds: Jamaican Politics, Nationalism, And Musical Culture In Transition, 1974-1984, Caree Banton
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The story of Jamaican music is also one of the island's journey from independence, the rise of nationalism and changes in its political structure in the Cold War era. Reggae as a popular form, developed in the context of Jamaica's history of colonialism and slavery, as well as the island's development as an independent nation within the African Diaspora. Michael Manley's policy of democratic socialism leading to U.S. intervention to destabilize his government in the mid-1970s and the installation of the pro-American Edward Seaga, in 1980, led to considerable changes in Jamaican political culture and nationalism. Inextricable from changes in …

An Inhospitable Land: Anti-Italian Sentiment And Violence In Louisiana, 1891-1924, Alan Gauthreaux
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
For over one hundred and sixty years, the Italian immigrants settling in Louisiana have been the subject of much scholarly research. The newly-arrived immigrants showed a propensity for hard work, and natives of the region expected them to eventually assimilate into their new surroundings. However, Italians held little understanding of race relations between blacks and whites in Louisiana as well as in the South. Because of this ignorance, the Italians suffered social, political, and racial discrimination at the hands of the white power structure in Louisiana. This discrimination culminated with several violent incidents against Italians which exposed the motives behind …
An Unlikely Champion: Congressman Mario Biaggi And The Beginnings Of A Negotiated Settlement In Northern Ireland, Ronnie Johnson
An Unlikely Champion: Congressman Mario Biaggi And The Beginnings Of A Negotiated Settlement In Northern Ireland, Ronnie Johnson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In 1976, U.S. Congressman Mario Biaggi, D-NY, seized on Jimmy Carter's comments regarding human rights conditions in Northern Ireland. Biaggi, and several Irish/American groups, took these comments as an opening to challenge British policies in Northern Ireland. To aid this effort Biaggi in 1977 formed the Ad Hoc Congressional Committee for Irish Affairs, focusing on human rights in Northern Ireland. Their efforts ran up agains long-established U.S./British diplomatic relations and faced strong opposition in U.S. and Irish political circles. As the Northern Ireland debate unfolded during the Carter Administration, Biaggi and the Ad Hoc Committee increasingly aligned with pro-IRA forces …

The Actor's Self Serving Bias: An Exploration Of Various Acting Techniques In The Creation Of The Role Of Kate In Dancing At Lughnasa, Kathleen Johnston
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In psychology, the self-serving bias refers to a person's tendency to claim responsibility for his or her successes rather than failures. In acting, it takes on new meaning. The study of acting requires that the student use any source that will lead to his or her growth. The bias refers to this tendency towards self-betterment in the artistic process. This study is an attempt to document this process in my creation of the role of Kate in Dancing at Lughnasa. Included in the experiment are outlines of my basic process and the techniques I used to supplement it, how the …

The following thesis will address both the work I completed during my Graduate studies at the University of New Orleans (1992-96), as well as the collaborative work I executed in the years that followed. The range of materials used, individual subject matter, and the variations in presentation vary widely, but the development of concept and methodology will be illuminated by the analysis of these works under the central theme of collaboration. The works selected for presentation were chosen in order to exemplify both the thematic similarities and the conceptual dynamics of a body of work inspired by intellectual investigation and …
Characterization Of Structures And Deformation In The Brittle-Ductile Transition, Western Termination Of The Chugach Metamorphic Complex, Southern Alaska, Erik Day
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Field mapping along the western termination of the Chugach Metamorphic Complex (CMC) revealed a new D2 structure, the Bremner foliation fan. This structure has a high strain, vertically foliated core, with moderate-shallow dipping cleavages to the north and south which rollover into the core. The fan appears to have propagated from below by a shear-zone at depth (O'Driscoll, 2006). Description of the Bremner foliation fan revealed that the Bremner shear zone of Pavlis and Sisson (2003) is a D3 structure, and that the Stuart Creek fault is a younger brittle fault with 90km of dextral offset. Electron Back Scatter Diffraction …
