Understanding The Integrative Role Of An Academic Library For Undergraduate Student Workers, Charles W. Weston May 2008

Understanding The Integrative Role Of An Academic Library For Undergraduate Student Workers, Charles W. Weston

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study explored how undergraduate library student workers at an urban, 4-year public institution perceived their work experiences in an academic library as contributing to their social and academic integration in college. Tinto's (1993) model on student departure formed the basis for this study where academic and social integration work together to influence institutional commitments ultimately leading to the decision to remain or leave the college. Undergraduate library student workers from various library departments were interviewed and it is from these interviews that a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of an academic library's effect on undergraduate library student workers was …

Association Of Fat Oxidation And Insulin Resistance In Prepubertal Children, Connie Vanvrancken Tompkins May 2008

Association Of Fat Oxidation And Insulin Resistance In Prepubertal Children, Connie Vanvrancken Tompkins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Identifying the relationship between fat oxidation and insulin resistance (IR) may provide vital clues to the mechanisms behind the development of metabolic disease in prepubertal children. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of fat oxidation with insulin resistance (IR) and insulin sensitivity (SI) in prepubertal children. A total of 34 prepubertal 7-9 year olds (18 females, 16 males, 13 non-Caucasian, 21 Caucasian, 8.0±0.8 years, 36.5±12.1 kg) were observed. Subjects participated in indirect calorimetry to obtain respiratory quotient (RQ) and a blood test to obtain fasting insulin and glucose to calculate IR by homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). …

Digital Receipt System Using Mobile Device Technologies, Doc Lap Nguyen May 2008

Digital Receipt System Using Mobile Device Technologies, Doc Lap Nguyen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Cell phones are the most prevalent computing devices. They come pre-loaded with many different functions such as a digital camera, a mobile web browser, a streaming media player, games, GPS navigation, and more. However, if the banks have their way, the cell phone may become the preferred method of payment for everyday purchases. When that happens, there will be a need to securely send and store the receipt information so that they can be quickly analyzed. This thesis will demonstrate the use of a Digital Receipt system to manage transactions using Bluetooth technology to communicate between mobile devices. This expands …

Postures, Natalie Sciortino May 2008

Postures, Natalie Sciortino

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In our present image-laden environment that only seems to keep growing, the nature of how we see and interpret this visual information becomes highly relevant for me in my art. Spectacle, nostalgia, notions of portraiture, theatricality and other visual reflections of our present culture industry, are all elements that I address in my work. It is with these ideas in mind that I construct visual fields where disparate forms and images coexist, forming new narratives aside from their individual isolated implications; incorporating art production methods that construct an evolving dichotomy that contains a sense of play, tension, and irony while …

Synthesis Of Well-Defined N-Heterocyclic Carbene (Nhc) Complexes Of Late Transition Metals, Pierre De Fremont May 2008

Synthesis Of Well-Defined N-Heterocyclic Carbene (Nhc) Complexes Of Late Transition Metals, Pierre De Fremont

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as appropriate replacements for phosphines to synthesized highly active metal complexes in homogeneous catalysis. The advantages of NHCs over phosphines include ease of handling, minimal toxicity and powerful electron donating properties. They bind transition metals with no need of back-donation and yield complexes with enhanced stability. The ability of NHCs to bind all metals from the periodic table, in low and high oxidation states, creates an unprecedented opportunity for the design of new complexes. This dissertation is dedicated to the synthesis of well-defined organosilver and organogold complexes bearing NHC ligands. In addition, two short chapters …

The Toaster That Toasted The Golden Toast, Danny Bourque

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper thoroughly examines the production of the thesis film, The Toaster That Toasted The Golden Toast. Each area of the film's production is carefully dissected, including the writing, production design, cinematography, editing, sound, technology, workflow, and direction. Each of these areas contains a myriad of decisions that were made in effort to fulfill the overall vision of the movie as being a genuinely funny action film produced with a high production value, and these decisions are discussed at length. Documented feedback from test audiences is also reviewed in an attempt to objectively critique the final film

Post-Translational Regulation Of Plant Fatty Acid Desaturases As Expressed In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Linda Bourassa May 2008

Post-Translational Regulation Of Plant Fatty Acid Desaturases As Expressed In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Linda Bourassa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Differences have been shown in the steady-state accumulation and half-lives between Brassica FAD3 (BF3) and tung FAD3 (TF3) proteins expressed in yeast cells cultured at 30°C. TF3 has a greater steady-state accumulation and longer half-life than BF3. These differences are attributed to post-translational modification and have been shown to be controlled by an Nterminal element. I attempted to determine specific amino acids important for regulation, and further characterize the mechanism contributing to the differences. Through site-directed mutagenesis, it was shown that replacing lysine residues with asparagines in the BF3 and TF3 Ntermini increased protein stability, while replacing an asparagine with …

Commonality Of Liquidity Around The World: Evaluation Of Possible Reasons, Mehmet F. Dicle May 2008

Commonality Of Liquidity Around The World: Evaluation Of Possible Reasons, Mehmet F. Dicle

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We identify some of the factors affecting the extent of commonality in liquidity and differences between different stock exchanges around the world. With a comprehensive approach, our investigation centers on presenting evidence on the existence of commonality in liquidity, effect of using different measures of market variables on the level of commonality, factors that change the likelihood of stocks having commonality and factors explaining the different levels of commonality across markets. For the individual stock liquidity, we employ most common and reliable liquidity measures including quoted bid and ask spread, proportional spread, effective spread, proportional effective spread and percentage spread. …

Computational Intelligence And Complexity Measures For Chaotic Information Processing, Davoud Arasteh May 2008

Computational Intelligence And Complexity Measures For Chaotic Information Processing, Davoud Arasteh

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the application of computational intelligence methods in the analysis of nonlinear chaotic systems in the framework of many known and newly designed complex systems. Parallel comparisons are made between these methods. This provides insight into the difficult challenges facing nonlinear systems characterization and aids in developing a generalized algorithm in computing algorithmic complexity measures, Lyapunov exponents, information dimension and topological entropy. These metrics are implemented to characterize the dynamic patterns of discrete and continuous systems. These metrics make it possible to distinguish order from disorder in these systems. Steps required for computing Lyapunov exponents with a reorthonormalization …

Evolution: The Progress Of A Painter, Rachel Jones May 2008

Evolution: The Progress Of A Painter, Rachel Jones

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This analysis explores the progression of my work over the past three years of study. My initial pursuits involved ideas that revolved around contemporary feminism, however, with time I expanded upon those ideas by exploring other subjects. I realized the connection in all of my work lies in the use of manipulated found imagery, and the desire to release this imagery from the confines of traditional pictorial space. With this discovery, I became free to utilize any manner of subjects, as the subject matter relied heavily on the finding and re-interpreting of these disparate images into the language of paint. …

The Effects Of The Invasive Exotic Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica Sebifera) On Amphibians And Aquatic Invertebrates, Norman Leonard May 2008

The Effects Of The Invasive Exotic Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica Sebifera) On Amphibians And Aquatic Invertebrates, Norman Leonard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the question of how leaf litter from trees affects animals that live in aquatic environments, with an emphasis on the effect of Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera) leaf litter on anuran larvae (i.e., frog tadpoles). This question is important to our understanding of how allochthonous inputs to aquatic habitats drive biodiversity in wetlands. It also addresses a timely conservation concern in southeastern Louisiana where invasion by Chinese tallow trees (Triadica sebifera) is displacing native trees. The invasion process is homogenizing forest composition and changing the quantity and quality of litter inputs to ponds from those produced by a …

A Revolutionary Perspective On Social Movements: Fundamentalism In The Islamic World, D. Dustin Berna May 2008

A Revolutionary Perspective On Social Movements: Fundamentalism In The Islamic World, D. Dustin Berna

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the last two decades, we have seen a significant surge in the number of Islamic fundamentalist movements, and there has not been a concise reason as to why. The main objective of this research is to determine the causes of Islamic fundamentalism, and, in so showing that an Islamic fundamentalist movement is inherently a social movement. To determine the causes of Islamic fundamentalism it is best to employ a labyrinth analogy, and it consists of four social movement conditions. The four conditions that make up my fundamentalist labyrinth can be found in the four social movement literatures, and they …

Lived In, Laura Gipson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a description and analysis of work that I produced during my Gradate studies at the University of New Orleans. The central theme of these works is the common human experience of inner dialogue, an interior experience. Through prints and sculpture I produce stand-ins for the body. These objects are meant to invite the viewer to sense recognizable human traits and to experience the works as having been "lived in."

Doorways To Development: Foreign Direct Investment Policies In Developing Countries, Michael Hess May 2008

Doorways To Development: Foreign Direct Investment Policies In Developing Countries, Michael Hess

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a key option for economic growth in most, if not all, developing countries. However, not all developing countries are equally open to foreign investment. Some restrict foreign equity, while others encourage multinational corporations to enter their markets. Because FDI involves outsiders entering national markets and profits, it is very political. FDI can bring economic benefits, such as jobs and new technology, but it may also entail economic costs, such as increased competition for national businesses. FDI may also bring political costs, as governments that open to foreign equity may see a popular backlash. Most governments …

Experiencing Higher Education In Louisiana Through A Native American Lens, Linda Kelly May 2008

Experiencing Higher Education In Louisiana Through A Native American Lens, Linda Kelly

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to capture the voice of the Louisiana Native American students who attend Louisiana institutions of higher education. Native Americans are the least represented minority in colleges. More have entered college in recent years, yet they continue to leave college at a high rate. It is important to understand what motivates Native students to attend college and what keeps them in college. When an understanding of their persistence is achieved, strategies can be implemented to assist others. Research questions that prompted inquiry relate to a Louisiana Native American perspective. All of the research questions ask …

Musicians Who Busk: Identity, Career, And Community In New Orleans Street Performance, Aram Parrish Lief

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Street musicians in New Orleans are one of type of contemporary performers or buskers who represent an occupational community located in the French Quarter. Though often marginalized or seen as deviant, these urban troubadours regard themselves as professional entertainers who adhere to ethical standards and business practices. This study is an analysis of these performers that includes a description of their cluster of performing activities, the concomitant artifacts used in the performances, and the cohesiveness of this group during times of difficulty. Because of a dearth of published research on this specific topic, this study will contribute a new dimension …

Shaping An Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance For Post-Katrina New Orleans, Kristen Phillips May 2008

Shaping An Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance For Post-Katrina New Orleans, Kristen Phillips

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Louisiana legislature's justifications for supporting inclusionary zoning to address the shortage in affordable housing since hurricane Katrina and compares the model ordinance, passed in 2007, to ordinances in San Francisco, Denver, and San Diego. These large city ordinances offer an assessment of older versus newer ordinances as well as strict versus lenient provisions within a mandatory ordinance. This thesis acknowledges the model ordinance is strong and accepts its recommendation to convene a housing task force to study implementation in New Orleans. In order to maximize the benefits of inclusionary zoning this task force should be convened …

Essays On Determinants Of Ipo Liquidity And Price Adjustments To Persistent Information In Option Markets, Yen-Sheng Lee May 2008

Essays On Determinants Of Ipo Liquidity And Price Adjustments To Persistent Information In Option Markets, Yen-Sheng Lee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I examine the determinants of cross-sectional liquidity in the IPO aftermarket during the period of 1995 through 2005. I find that past price performance, the extent of stock visibility, the mass of informed agents, and certain IPO attributes play a role in explaining IPO trading activity. My empirical evidence shows that differences of opinion and estimation uncertainty about an IPO firm affect little IPO liquidity. My findings contribute to the understanding of determinants of IPO aftermarket trading. I also investigate whether contemporaneous overreaction tends to occur following persistent information in the options market. More specifically, I compare the reactions between …

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Pontchartrain Estuary, Rachel Roblin May 2008

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Pontchartrain Estuary, Rachel Roblin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A 1-D tidal, salinity and water quality model that analyzes the general effects freshwater diversions have on the water quality of the Pontchartrain Estuary over a 17-year period is presented here. Using the modeled live algae concentrations in conjunction with the algal bloom probability model results produces an accurate prediction of algal bloom occurrences between 1990 and 2006. The model predicts that the addition of freshwater diversions into Maurepas swamp and increases to flow in the Bonnet Carré Spillway may cause more intense and frequent algal blooms to occur around the Pontchartrain Estuary. The model also predicts that high nutrient …

Late Neogene Uplift Of The Fairweather Ground On The Basis Of Bathymetric And Seismic Data From The Gulf Of Alaska, Peter David Guarisco Iv

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Pliocene to Pleistocene glacial-marine deposits adjacent to the Fairweather Ground basement in the Gulf of Alaska are the focus for seismic interpretation using public domain seismic reflection data. The late Tertiary and early Quaternary sections of the Yakataga Formation record a glacial/ interglacial climate change sequence with increasing rates of sedimentation (175 meters per million years to 4000 meters per million years). The foreland basin sediment load is deposited onto the Yakutat block, a microplate that takes up the strike-slip to convergent movement with respect to North America and Pacific plates. Tectonic activity during the last 5 million years has …

From Onlooker To Interpreter, Jeff Rinehart

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In my artwork, I incorporate narratives, which help me explore relationships and how they exist within the context of the formal imagery on the page. The idea of storytelling highly influences the way I approach and produce art. To hint at a story will entice the viewer to make connections and create a platform on which to further inspect the image. The lines in my work attempt to mimic the way stories and information can loop and intertwine to negate the personal, surround the personal or maybe just provide something that the viewer would have to weave his way through …

Sticking It To The Man By Standing By Your Man: Social Support As An Act Of Resistance , Andrew Middleton Wallace May 2008

Sticking It To The Man By Standing By Your Man: Social Support As An Act Of Resistance , Andrew Middleton Wallace

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize literatures on stress, social support, symbolic interaction, and de Certeau as they pertain to the recovery of a homosexually-identified individual from a homophobic interaction. A model of the initial stressful interaction as well as the interaction between a homosexually-identified individual and his socially-supportive network is posited with the consumption of culturally-disseminated roles and the salience of role-identities as the mechanisms by which it works. The model is then considered as a form of resistance in the light of broader gay liberation social movements. The study focuses on white, middle-class, American, homosexually-identified males …
