Diabetes Camp, Sarah Mcknight May 2008

Diabetes Camp, Sarah Mcknight

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Every summer Camp Hopewell in Oxford, Mississippi hosts its annual summer camps. Over the course of a week, kids between the ages of seven and fifteen run, play, hike, and canoe. It's the pretty standard summer camp fair, but there is something that makes a week at Camp Hopewell different. Every child that comes to camp has been diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. Some have had it for years and consider camp their second home while some have just been diagnosed and still live in fear of their condition. For this one week, however, they all have something in common, …

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between The Scoring Rubrics Inventory And The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory As Reported By Secondary School Core-Subject Teachers, Paula Marie Pucheu May 2008

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between The Scoring Rubrics Inventory And The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory As Reported By Secondary School Core-Subject Teachers, Paula Marie Pucheu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The promise of increased student achievement through educational reform is delivered still-born if teachers do not know how to implement complex instructional practices and sophisticated analysis of student performance. Metacognitive awareness is crucial to the adoption and application of proven educational initiatives. Teachers who successfully implement criterion-referenced assessment instruction, scoring rubrics, transfer to their students the metacognitive knowledge and skills of how to learn. This study is predicated on the research assumptions that metacognition and its attendant skills are critical to the successful implementation of scoring rubrics. A researcher-developed instrument, the Scoring Rubrics Inventory (SRI) and the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory …

Facing The Storm: An Oral History Of Elderly Survivors Of Katrina, Eileen Guillory May 2008

Facing The Storm: An Oral History Of Elderly Survivors Of Katrina, Eileen Guillory

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper is drawn from oral history interviews from elderly residents who survived the Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005. The aged faced similar challenges as their younger counterparts in the evacuation, aftermath, and rebuilding phases of the storm; however, their responses are limited by a number of factors that make the impact on their lives more intense. The majority of storm casualties in New Orleans were elderly. Those elderly who did survive the flooding experienced life-threatening physical and emotional stress. Life-altering changes, such as relocation from familiar neighborhoods to nursing homes in unfamiliar cities or a dependent life with family …

The"War On Poverty" And "Welfare Reform": A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of Elite Newspaper Editorial Coverage In 1964 And 1996, Laura Mogg May 2008

The"War On Poverty" And "Welfare Reform": A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of Elite Newspaper Editorial Coverage In 1964 And 1996, Laura Mogg

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

From the time of the "war on poverty" of 1964, to the era of "welfare reform" in 1990s, the federal welfare system underwent a change from a model that acted to protect citizens from the vagaries of the market economy to one that mandated their participation in the paid labor force. For a shift in policy of this magnitude to occur and be unquestioningly accepted by the public, a significant change also had to occur in how poverty and welfare issues were discussed and perceived over the intervening years. Using discourse analysis, this study examines how editorials in elite newspapers …

Cause Lawyers And Social Movements: Perspectives From Post-Katrina New Orleans, Peter O'Connell May 2008

Cause Lawyers And Social Movements: Perspectives From Post-Katrina New Orleans, Peter O'Connell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Cause lawyers maintain primary commitments to causes and pursue political and moral objectives that go well beyond the traditional lawyering objective of client service, which is the goal of most conventional lawyers. In this research I conduct in-depth interviews with cause lawyers involved in efforts for social change in post-Katrina New Orleans to develop a richer understanding of their roles within social movements and how they conceive of and negotiate the core tensions in their work. I investigate the lawyers' roles within social movements situated in legal, political and social climates that are overwhelmingly inhospitable to their ultimate goals. Ultimately, …

Fan With Guitar, Jeremy Tuman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Fan with Guitar is a collection of ten personal, nonfiction essays written between 2005 and 2008. The theme that connects them is music. The essays all explore, to some degree, the significance of music in our lives, the value we place on it, and the trials and merits of a life dedicated to music. The majority of the essays deal with the author's experiences traveling and performing with a musical group, thus also functioning as travel essays. Two essays address the role of the fan, and two others concern the idea of community and touch on how music plays a …

Businesses As Cultural Icons: Their Application Towards Understanding Urban Morphology, Stephanie Lawrence May 2008

Businesses As Cultural Icons: Their Application Towards Understanding Urban Morphology, Stephanie Lawrence

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Icons surround us but are so ubiquitous they are difficult to observe. Specifically urban cultural icons are a scientific sub-topic under urban morphology's heading and as well are closely related to economic development issues. This study premises that businesses are urban cultural icons which can be computed into four rankings: local cultural icons, focal, zonal, and global cultural icons. And through using dimensional measurement an index is measured. This index can then be used to assess urban morphology. The data set ranges from businesses opening in 1865 to the present. Some are globally-distributed "big boxes"; others are unique one-store shops. …

Testing The Waters: The Social Contexts Of Homeowner Flood Mitigation, Maggie L. Olivier May 2008

Testing The Waters: The Social Contexts Of Homeowner Flood Mitigation, Maggie L. Olivier

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

South Louisiana regularly experiences effects from flooding. This study looks at what homeowners are doing to reduce their losses from floods through the practices of flood mitigation. I developed four hypotheses to predict homeowners' mitigation behavior. (1) Homeowners with a history of flooding are likely to mitigate more than those without previous flooding. (2) High-disposable-income homeowners are more likely to mitigate than lowdisposable- income homeowners. (3) The stronger the place attachment among homeowners, the higher the likelihood they will mitigate. (4) Homeowners who have experienced effective mitigation measures in the past are more likely to mitigate than those who have …

The Usefulness Of Ground Penetrating Radar In Locating Burials In Charity Hospital Cemetery, New Orleans, Monique Tashell Mitchell May 2008

The Usefulness Of Ground Penetrating Radar In Locating Burials In Charity Hospital Cemetery, New Orleans, Monique Tashell Mitchell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Charity Hospital Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana, was used as a potter's field for over 150 years. When Charity Hospital considered selling a portion of the property ground penetrating radar (GPR) and thermal infrared (TIR) data were collected in the cemetery to locate unmarked graves. The TIR data could not be used because the expert died before compiling the TIR data. Therefore, the GPR data was the sole source of subsurface information. GPR anomalies were used to excavate 3 areas where bones and hospital supplies were subsequently found, unfortunately very limited analyses were possible on the analog GPR data. …

Interaction Effects In Nickel Nanowires Arrays, Ovidiu Cezar Trusca May 2008

Interaction Effects In Nickel Nanowires Arrays, Ovidiu Cezar Trusca

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Systems of magnetic nanowires are considered strong candidates in many technological applications as microwave filters, sensors or devices for data storage. Because of their strong potential as candidates in such applications they became lately the object of many studies. However, due to the very complicated nature of the interwire interactions, their magnetic behavior is very difficult to be interpreted. The main parameter controlling the response of magnetic nanowires assemblies is the aspect ratio of the nanowires that is defined as the ratio of the length to the wire's diameter. In our study we choose to modify the aspect ratio by …

Implementation Of Secure Key Management Techniques In Wireless Sensor Networks, Noor Ottallah May 2008

Implementation Of Secure Key Management Techniques In Wireless Sensor Networks, Noor Ottallah

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Creating a secure wireless sensor network involves authenticating and encrypting messages that are sent throughout the network. The communicating nodes must agree on secret keys in order to be able to encrypt packets. Sensor networks do not have many resources and so, achieving such key agreements is a difficult matter. Many key agreement schemes like Diffie-Hellman and public-key based schemes are not suitable for wireless sensor networks. Pre-distribution of secret keys for all pairs of nodes is not viable due to the large amount of memory used when the network size is large. We propose a novel key management system …

An Energy-Efficient Medium Access Control Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks "V-Mac" , Mohamad Qayoom May 2008

An Energy-Efficient Medium Access Control Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks "V-Mac" , Mohamad Qayoom

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are composed of hundreds of wireless sensors which collaborate to perform a common task. Because of the small size of wireless sensors, they have some serious limitations including very low computation capability and battery reserve. Such resource limitations require that WSN protocols to be extremely efficient. In this thesis, we focus on the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer in WSNs. We propose a MAC scheme, V-MAC, for WSNs that extends that lifetime of the network. We compare V-MAC with other MAC schemes. V-MAC uses a special mechanism to divide sensors in different groups and then all …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The theme of the first movement of the of the trio is introduced by the violin playing a lyrical melody of four measures. The melody is then imitated by the cello. To make the trio a true one, the piano takes on the theme. This movement is based on interplay between instruments of various combinations. The second movement is made up of tonal colors. The piano introduces them by placid strokes of chords. The singing quality of the violin adds great color to the composition. The sonorous melodic line of the cello produces smooth quality of sound. The third movement is …

Leyla And Mejnun For String Quartet, Roula Baaklini May 2008

Leyla And Mejnun For String Quartet, Roula Baaklini

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Leyla and Mejnun for string quartet relates a classical Middle Eastern love story. A young poet named Qays Ibn Al-Mulawwah fell in love with his cousin Leyla. He went mad when her father prevented him from marrying her. The music consists of four interwoven movements. The Prelude is based on a motif in F# played by the first violin, then by the second violin on Bb, and finally by the viola and cello altogether, respectively in D and Ab. It ends with a final restatement of the motif on the second violin with pizzicato on the three other instruments. The …

An Optimal Interset Rest Period For Strength Recovery During A Common Isokinetic Test, Ivan Blazquez May 2008

An Optimal Interset Rest Period For Strength Recovery During A Common Isokinetic Test, Ivan Blazquez

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Isokinetic testing is used in rehabilitation settings on a regular basis, yet there is a lack of consistency in rest period usage among protocols. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish an optimal rest period that would allow reproducibility of strength during a common isokinetic strength-test. Methods: Twentyseven healthy college-aged males underwent isokinetic strength testing to determine peak torque at 60, 180 and 300 deg/sec, respectively. Work:rest ratios of 1:3, 1:8 and 1:12 were counterbalanced between sets. A 3 X 3 repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the data. The p < .05 level of significance was used for all tests. Results: There was no significant difference in either knee extension or knee flexion peak torque when comparing work:rest ratios. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a 1:3 work:rest ratio is sufficient during a common isokinetic strength test.

"To Clear A Rock-Bottom, Low-Density Slum": Using Public Housing Means To Meet Urban Renewal Ends In New Orleans, 1954-1959, Stephanie L. Slates May 2008

"To Clear A Rock-Bottom, Low-Density Slum": Using Public Housing Means To Meet Urban Renewal Ends In New Orleans, 1954-1959, Stephanie L. Slates

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Unlike major cities across the country, New Orleans did not have the power to expropriate property to engage in urban renewal projects after 1954. Yet city officials desperately sought to meet the ends of urban renewal, specifically through public claims of slum clearance and private motivation to speed along neighborhood segregation. Hamstrung in their efforts to move forward with taking residents' homes for private redevelopment, the city worked to reach its urban renewal goals by taking property for public works projects, including public housing. The city's decision to build the Guste and Fischer housing projects represents a case study of …

On The Determination Of Building Footprints From Lidar Data, Henry C. George Dec 2007

On The Determination Of Building Footprints From Lidar Data, Henry C. George

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A new approach to improve the determination of building boundaries through automatic processing of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data is presented. The LIDAR data is processed and interpolated into a grayscale image of intensity values corresponding to height measurements. Ground measurements are separated from non-ground measurements by using a progressive morphological filter. With these measurements now distinct, further separation of non-ground measurements into building and non-building measurements is performed by growing regions with similar characteristics. These building areas are then refined, resulting in a ground plan representation of building boundaries, known as building footprints. Several algorithms are then implemented …

The hydrophone of each buoy was 265 meters above the bottom. The data duration ranged from 10-14 months. The buoys were located near a major shipping lane, with an estimated 1.5 to 4.5 ships per day passing nearby. The data were sampled at 2500 Hz and have a bandwidth of 10-1000 Hz. Data are …

Short And Long-Term Changes In The Fish Assemblages Of Bayou Lacombe, Louisiana, Jeffrey M. Van Vrancken Dec 2007

Short And Long-Term Changes In The Fish Assemblages Of Bayou Lacombe, Louisiana, Jeffrey M. Van Vrancken

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the past thirty-five years, anthropogenic disturbances around Bayou Lacombe have altered its fish assemblage. In 2005, the impact of Hurricane Katrina on southeast Louisiana presented me with a unique opportunity to explore the effects of a catastrophic storm on the Bayou. I explored the effects of natural and human disturbances on the Bayou's fish assemblage by electrofishing six historically sampled stations. My research goals were to determine: 1) which Bayou Lacombe fish assemblages were most resilient to the multiple effects of Hurricane Katrina, 2) if there were significant differences in the Bayou's fish assemblages over the past 35 years …

Feasibility Of The Use Of Two Spent Blast Materials As Aggregate In Hot Mix Asphalt In Louisiana Post-Katrina, Amer Kholoqui Khanfar Dec 2007

Feasibility Of The Use Of Two Spent Blast Materials As Aggregate In Hot Mix Asphalt In Louisiana Post-Katrina, Amer Kholoqui Khanfar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Using spent abrasive blast material (ABM) in hot mix asphalt to replace part of the fine aggregates used in the production of conventional hot mix asphalt has several environmental benefits. First, onsite storage of spent ABMs negatively impact neighboring properties because the fine materials are a source of airborne debris and dust. Use of tarps as curtains only reduces this hazard. Secondly, storage piles of this waste are situated near canals, waterways and the Mississippi River. Future storms may carry these waste products into the neighboring waterways. Most importantly, these wastes are ultimately disposed of in non-hazardous landfills. Reuse of …

Sugar Hill: Architectural, Cultural And Historic Significance Of An Early Twentieth Century African American Neighborhood In New Orleans, Louisiana, Niala Lynn Howard

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Across the United States, efforts are being made to document African American history and its contribution to the development of this country. At all levels of government and through individual research, attempts are being made to recognize and pay tribute to the role of the Black American. These efforts involve documenting the architectural, cultural, historical, scientific, and social contributions. In New Orleans, the Black American played a major role in the development of the city. For most of the 20th century, African Americans have been the majority of the population. However, little has been done to document their rich architectural …

Hundreds of Louisiana teachers participate in Louisiana Integration of Technology (INTECH) professional development as a strategy to change instructional practice and improve student achievement. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to investigate the Louisiana INTECH professional development model as an impetus for school change and increased student achievement. The study employed a survey and an ex-post facto, causal-comparative design to address the questions: 1) Do middle school administrators perceive the Louisiana INTECH professional development model as an impetus for school change? 2) Does the …

Visual Perception In Traumatic Brain Injury: Effects Of Severity And Effort, Luis Aguerrevere Dec 2007

Visual Perception In Traumatic Brain Injury: Effects Of Severity And Effort, Luis Aguerrevere

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have found that poor effort can significantly impact psychometric performance by Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) patients. So far, this impact has been relatively well studied in attention and memory. However, this is not the case for visual perception functions. Thus, the goal of this study was to determine to what extent TBI severity affect visual perception after controlling for effort. Results showed that mild TBI good effort group did not differ from a demographically matched control group. In contrast, a mild TBI poor effort group, a moderate-severe TBI group and a right hemisphere cerebro-vascular (CVA) group performed worse …
