Analyzing Frequent Acquires In Emerging Markets And Futures Markets Linkage, Naseem Al Rahahleh
Analyzing Frequent Acquires In Emerging Markets And Futures Markets Linkage, Naseem Al Rahahleh
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The first chapter of this dissertation examines the returns to frequent acquirers from emerging markets and analyzes the cross-country variations in cumulative abnormal returns. The sample consists of 5,147 transactions carried out by firms from 17 common and civil-law countries during the period of January 1985 to June 2008. I find that the cumulative abnormal returns decline over the deal order and it is more pronounced in civil-law countries than in common-law countries. There is also evidence that the premiums paid by acquirers from civillaw countries with a first successful acquisition are higher than those from common-law countries. These findings …
Discovering New Selves: Service-Learning And The Intellectual Development Of College Students, Charlotte J. Maheu
Discovering New Selves: Service-Learning And The Intellectual Development Of College Students, Charlotte J. Maheu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore college students' intellectual development through their service-learning experience. This study also took into consideration the characteristics of student groups and the way in which they transformed intellectually through their service-learning experience. To examine these questions, twelve upper-division college students who had completed a service-learning course were interviewed, in order to capture the dynamics of their service-learning experiences, their perceptions of their intellectual development, and their values and priorities as college students in detail. From the interviews, five major themes related to college students' intellectual development emerged. Three of the themes focused on …
Trellis Coded Modulation Schemes Using A New Expanded 16-Dimensional Constant Envelope Quadrature-Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Constellation, Milton I. Quinteros
Trellis Coded Modulation Schemes Using A New Expanded 16-Dimensional Constant Envelope Quadrature-Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Constellation, Milton I. Quinteros
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, the author presents and analyzes two 4-dimensional Constant Envelope Quadrature-Quadrature Phase Shift Keying constellations. Optimal demodulators for the two constellations are presented, and one of them was designed and implemented by the author. In addition, a novel expanded 16-dimensional CEQ2PSK constellation that doubles the number of points without decreasing the distance between points or increasing the peak energy is generated by concatenating the aforementioned constellations with a particular method and restrictions. This original 16-dimensional set of symbols is set-partitioned and used in a multidimensional Trellis-Coded Modulation scheme along with a convolutional encoder of rate 2/3. Effective gain …
Ground Target Tracking With Multi-Lane Constraint, Yangsheng Chen
Ground Target Tracking With Multi-Lane Constraint, Yangsheng Chen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Knowledge of the lane that a target is located in is of particular interest in on-road surveillance and target tracking systems. We formulate the problem and propose two approaches for on-road target estimation with lane tracking. The first approach for lane tracking is lane identification based ona Hidden Markov Model (HMM) framework. Two identifiers are developed according to different optimality goals of identification, i.e., the optimality for the whole lane sequence and the optimality of the current lane where the target is given the whole observation sequence. The second approach is on-road target tracking with lane estimation. We propose a …

Selling "Operation Passage To Freedom": Dr. Thomas Dooley And The Religious Overtones Of Early American Involvement In Vietnam, David Patrick Johnson
Selling "Operation Passage To Freedom": Dr. Thomas Dooley And The Religious Overtones Of Early American Involvement In Vietnam, David Patrick Johnson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Vietnam was partitioned at the 17th parallel on 21 July 1954 with the signing of the Geneva Accords. During the following three hundred days, between 600,000 and one million Vietnamese civilians traveled from North Vietnam to South Vietnam. Three hundred thousand of these individuals were transported in the United States Navy's evacuation efforts, dubbed Operation Passage to Freedom. The Navy recognized the propaganda value of the evacuation from areas under communist control, but American audiences did not respond to the coverage afforded to the American operation. In 1956, a year after the completion of the evacuation, Dr. Thomas Dooley released …
Measuring Accessibility And Explaining Trends In Commute Mode Choice In Washington, D.C. From 1970 - 2000, Jonathan Ryder
Measuring Accessibility And Explaining Trends In Commute Mode Choice In Washington, D.C. From 1970 - 2000, Jonathan Ryder
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study attempts to find a correlation between commuting modes in Washington DC and characteristics of the city and the people that they serve. It investigates why some census tracts have experienced increases in the commuting share of alternative transportation, such as public transit, walking, and bicycling, while others haven't. Findings demonstrate that demographic variables such as percent Hispanic and foreign born were the strongest predictors of change in commute mode share followed by distance to train station. Land use variables demonstrated weak correlations with variations in mode share due most likely to a lack of density gradient within the …

Negotiating Heritage: Heritage Organizations Amongst The Isleños Of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana And The Use Of Heritage Identity To Overcome The Isleño/Tornero Distinction , Jonathan Joseph West
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Isleños of St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana trace their ancestry to eighteenth century settlers from the Canary Islands. Currently, St. Bernard Parish is home to two separate Canarian heritage organizations: Los Isleños Heritage and Cultural Society and the Canary Islands Descendents Association. This thesis examines how the Isleños are currently renegotiating their cultural identity through the use of heritage via the structure of heritage organizations. I argue that under mounting economic, environmental, and political pressure, people of Canarian descent in St. Bernard Parish have begun to adjust Isleño cultural identity in order to make it more widely inclusive. This is …
Resilient Average And Distortion Detection In Sensor Networks, Ricardo Aguirre Jurado
Resilient Average And Distortion Detection In Sensor Networks, Ricardo Aguirre Jurado
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper a resilient sensor network is built in order to lessen the effects of a small portion of corrupted sensors when an aggregated result such as the average needs to be obtained. By examining the variance in sensor readings, a change in the pattern can be spotted and minimized in order to maintain a stable aggregated reading. Offset in sensors readings are also analyzed and compensated to help reduce a bias change in average. These two analytical techniques are later combined in Kalman filter to produce a smooth and resilient average given by the readings of individual sensors. …

Comparative Hydrodynamic Testing Of Small Scale Models, Jared Acosta
Comparative Hydrodynamic Testing Of Small Scale Models, Jared Acosta
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Early in the ship design process, naval architects must often evaluate and compare multiple hull forms for a specific set of requirements. Analytical tools are useful for quick comparisons, but they usually specialize in a specific hull type and are therefore not adequate for comparing dissimilar hull types. Scale model hydrodynamic testing is the traditional evaluation method, and is applicable to most hull forms. Scale model tests are usually performed on the largest model possible in order to achieve the most accurate performance predictions. However, such testing is very resource intensive, and is therefore not a cost effective method of …
Draumkvedet And The Medieval English Dream Vision: A Study Of Genre, Christian Carlsen
Draumkvedet And The Medieval English Dream Vision: A Study Of Genre, Christian Carlsen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Medieval English dream vision evidence influences from a variety of earlier vision literature, notably the apocalyptic vision and narrative dream. Philosophical visions by Plato, Cicero and Boethius, and Christian revelations of John and Paul contain traits that found their way into the dream poems by Langland, the Pearl poet and Chaucer. The Norwegian ballad Draumkvedet exhibits features that mirror these English visions. Notable characteristics pertaining to the character of the dreamer, the interplay between dreamer and dream, imagery of the vision, and structure, point to a common set of generic influences. Comparing Draumkvedet with its English counterparts demonstrates that …

Glucose And Glucosamine Derivatives As Novel Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Sherwin Cheuk
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are small molecules that are capable of entrapping solvents to form a gel in organic solvents or aqueous solution. These compounds rely solely on noncovalent forces to form the fibrous networks necessary to entrap a variety of solvents. The organogels and hydrogels thus formed could have applications in a variety of fields from environmental to biological to medicinal. Carbohydrates are ideal starting materials to synthesize LMWGs, because of their natural abundance, dense chirality, and biocompatibility. D-Glucose is the most common monosaccharide and D-glucosamine is isolated from natural sources, such as crab shells. Several series of …

Salinity Transport In A Finite-Volume Sigma-Layer Three-Dimensional Model, Angel Gabriel Retana
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to develop a 3-D model for The Pontchartrain Estuary that was capable of long-term mass conservative simulation of salinities. This was accomplished in a multi-stage approach involving: a physical model of salinity exchange through a pass; a 3-D FVCOM model of the physical experiment; the development and testing of an FVCOM model for an idealized Pontchartrain Basin; and for the entire estuary. The data from the physical model tests were used to validate the performance of the FVCOM model with density-driven flows. These results showed that hydrostatic FVCOM captured the primary internal wave movement. …

Preparation, Characterization, And Application Of Liposomes In The Study Of Lipid Oxidation Targeting Hydroxyl Radicals, Chanel Fortier
Preparation, Characterization, And Application Of Liposomes In The Study Of Lipid Oxidation Targeting Hydroxyl Radicals, Chanel Fortier
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the onset of many chronic illnesses including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cardiovascular diseases, there is evidence to support the delicate balance between prooxidant and antioxidant species is shifted in favor of the former. Under these conditions, many reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydroxyl radicals, are generated. Hydroxyl radicals formed in close proximity to DNA, nucleotides, proteins, and lipids rapidly oxidize these biological molecules in a nonspecific way. However, their toxicity is limited by their short lifetimes. Currently, the mechanism by which hydroxyl radicals are involved in the onset of many illnesses, particularly with regard to lipid peroxidation, has yielded some …
Application Of X-Ray Diffraction Methods And Molecular Mechanics Simulations To Structure Determination And Cotton Fiber Analysis, Zakhia Moore
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The results of three very different studies are presented. X-ray diffraction has been utilized for single-crystal structure determinations, fiber diffraction analyses, and in conjunction with molecular modeling of Cellulose IIII. Although each technique is different in its sampling, data acquisition, data treatment, and identification, the common denominator has been the use of x-rays. The single-crystal structure determination of ethylene glycol bis(tropane-3-carboxylate) is presented as an example of the use of modern single-crystal x-ray instrumentation including the use of coupled charged devices (CCDs) as detectors for accurate data collection and rapid elucidation of crystal structures. The structure determination of Cellulose IIII …
Casa Samba: Twenty-One Years Of Amerizilian Identity In New Orleans1, Lauren E. Lastrapes
Casa Samba: Twenty-One Years Of Amerizilian Identity In New Orleans1, Lauren E. Lastrapes
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Samba drumming and dance traditions work in New Orleans in ways that they do not elsewhere. Casa Samba, a drumming and dance troupe in the tradition of the Brazilian escolas de samba, shows how it works. Integral to this analysis of Casa Samba are the ways in which the group's identity and the identities of its individual members are processual, mutable, and "unfinished, always being remade" (Gilroy 1993:xi). This thesis examines how Casa Samba has situated itself in the New Orleans music scene. This work seeks, through ethnographic interviews with long term members, to identify what makes Casa Samba attractive …

Essays In Corporate Governance: Issues And Evidence From Equity Carve-Outs, Andrew Mulindwa Kayanga
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three essays examining the relation between corporate governance and firm performance. The theme of this study is that the widely documented long-term underperformance in equity carve-outs can be partly explained by weak corporate governance. The first essay presented in Chapter 2 explores the effect of shareholder-rights protection on the performance of a sample of firms that initiated a carve-out during the period 1983-2004. Using the Gompers, Ishii, and Metrick (2003) index and Bebchuk, Cohen, and Ferrell (2004) entrenchment index, as proxies for the quality of shareholder-rights protection, I provide evidence that firms with better shareholder rights …
Two Essays On Liquidity Essay I: Information Related Trading On Two Nearly Identical Options Essay Ii: The Importance Of The Liquidity Premium In The Presence Of Declining Transactions Cost, Wei-Xuan Li
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the first essay, I examine the impact of the introduction of exchange traded funds (ETFs) options on the information related trading of index options. Two option pairs, NASDAQ 100 index (NDX) and ETF (QQQ, currently QQQQ ) options, and Standard and Poor's 500 index (SPX) options and S & P Depository Receipts (SPY) options, are studied. I test the hypothesis, based on the theory of Chowdhry and Nanda (1991), and Admati and Pleiderer (1988), that the information component of spreads for index options should decline after ETF options were introduced. The method of George, Kaul and Nimalendran (1991) is …
