Mineralogy And Geochemistry Of The Dumper Dew Pegmatite, Oxford County, Maine, Jonathan Kyle South May 2009

Mineralogy And Geochemistry Of The Dumper Dew Pegmatite, Oxford County, Maine, Jonathan Kyle South

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Dumper Dew is a newly discovered pegmatite located on the eastfacing slope of Uncle Tom Mountain in Oxford County, Maine. It is a geochemically evolved LCT-type pegmatite petrogenetically linked to the middle Paleozoic Sebago batholith. Shallow emplacement of the Dumper Dew is evidenced by abundant miarolitic cavities found in the pegmatite. The sheet-like structure of the pegmatite coupled with its intrusion in lowmetamorphic grade country rock suggests rapid crystallization. Northern portions of the wall zone and intermediate zones have undergone hydrothermal alteration by the migration of late-stage fluids. The pegmatite hosts a diverse assemblage of rare-element mineral phases due …

A Model For Regional Technology-Based Economic Development, Robert Savoie May 2009

A Model For Regional Technology-Based Economic Development, Robert Savoie

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Technology-based economic development has been a highly sought-after objective for regions in developed and developing countries alike. The wealth created by regional knowledgebased economies like Silicon Valley is an attractive outcome. Without understanding clusterbased economic strategy, the different types of technology-based economic development approaches, the factors that dictate success or failure, and how those factors interrelate within a particular region, then the probability of success is minimal at best. Economic Development is a process and hence lends itself to a Systems Engineering approach, which was chosen as the methodology for analyzing and designing a better model for studying regions around …

When Education Ceases To Be Public: The Privatization Of The New Orleans School System After Hurricane Katrina, Sarah Leblanc Goff May 2009

When Education Ceases To Be Public: The Privatization Of The New Orleans School System After Hurricane Katrina, Sarah Leblanc Goff

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the privatization movement in the post-Katrina New Orleans education system. Less than a month after Katrina, a well-financed charter school movement was moving swiftly through the ravaged city. Nationally, a network of right-wing think tanks and school choice advocates descended on New Orleans shortly after the storm. Locally, state legislators and local leaders pushed from the inside for reform in the way of charter schools. Aided by a state takeover of schools and federal and corporate financing, the "great experiment" had begun. This study strives to cut through the façade of the charter school movement, and to …

The Role Of Practicum And Intern Supervisees In Professional Identity Development, Damion R. Cummins May 2009

The Role Of Practicum And Intern Supervisees In Professional Identity Development, Damion R. Cummins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A strong professional counselor identity is vital for supervisees in training (Hansen, 2003). Supervision has been linked to enhancing the development of a professional identity in supervisees (Bernard & Goodyear, 2004). In a study of counselor interns, Weaks (2002) found supervisees require three core conditions in supervision necessary for developing a professional identity: equality, safety, and challenge. In a similar study, Howard, Inman, and Altman (2006) found beginning practicum supervisees experienced five critical incidents in their professional growth: professional identity, personal reactions, competence, supervision, and philosophy of counseling. The purpose of this study was to explore how practicum and internship …

A Comparison Of Installation Methods And Maintenance Practices Of Protected Side Armoring, April J. Villa May 2009

A Comparison Of Installation Methods And Maintenance Practices Of Protected Side Armoring, April J. Villa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The IPET (Interagency Performance Evaluation Taskforce) Team's significant finding is if the levees had armoring, the HSDRRS would have an element of resiliency. IPET defines resiliency as "The ability to withstand, without catastrophic failure…beyond those intended or estimated in the design. …resilience refers to the ability to withstand higher than designed water levels and overtopping without breaching" (USACE, 2007). In the analysis of armoring products, two criterions usually govern. First, the ability for the armoring to resist overtopping velocity from storms greater than the 100 year authorized level. Second, does the product facilitate installation and maintenance post-Katrina? This thesis will …

An Evaluation And Redesign Of A Thermal Compression Evaporator, Benjamin Marc Day May 2009

An Evaluation And Redesign Of A Thermal Compression Evaporator, Benjamin Marc Day

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Evaporators separate liquids from solutions. For maximum efficiency, designers reduce the temperature difference between the heating and heated media using multiple-stage evaporators. This efficiency requires increased size and bulk. A vendor claimed its thermal compression evaporator achieved high efficiency with only two stages. It did not function as claimed. This project investigated the evaporator's design to identify its problems and propose an alternative design with a minimized footprint. The analysis showed theoretical flaws and design weaknesses in the evaporator, including violation of the first law of thermodynamics. An alternative thermal compressor design was created through computational fluid dynamics using spreadsheet …

A Comprehensive Examination Of The Determinants And Consequences Of Political Trust Among Latinos, Dean E. Bonner May 2009

A Comprehensive Examination Of The Determinants And Consequences Of Political Trust Among Latinos, Dean E. Bonner

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Political trust is an important concept in a representative democracy because it defines citizens’ expectations of their elected officials, their willingness to allow government to act on their behalf, and the quality of democratic accountability. Distrust, or when government outcomes fail to meet citizens' expectations, has been linked to discontent and disaffection, and to a broad decline in the legitimacy of government institutions. Research consistently shows that Latinos are more trusting than non-Latinos--a finding which seems discordant in light of the socio-economic and cultural differences between these groups. The concept of expectations is especially interesting and useful in examining differences …

Troupers: Essays In Three Rings, Jon Pult

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Troupers: Essays in Three Rings is a collection of fourteen essays focused mainly on variety entertainers (including the author). It leads the reader through a menagerie of the author's own enthusiasms--from clowning and circus elephants, to hot jazz and the ukulele. While the primary occupation of the "troupers"spotlighted here has always been to delight audiences, many of them--both human and animal--could not escape the hardscrabble, the sundered relations, the violence of everyday life. The author tells the stories of these "troupers" here, stories that reveal both their suffering and their refusal to suffer.

Variations On A Theme: Forty Years Of Music, Memories, And Mistakes, Christopher John Stephens May 2009

Variations On A Theme: Forty Years Of Music, Memories, And Mistakes, Christopher John Stephens

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

How did music play a consistent role through various memories? In this memoir, I look at the sweet, the traumatic and troubling. I use specific songs as connections to lost loved ones. I pin the power of music to the loss of three important people in my life: my sister, father, and mother. Who were their musical touchstones? Did I share them? Did music run through them as it has always run through me? The memoir is sandwiched by a brief extended metaphor that props up the conceit that we are entering a live concert performance. It is billed as …

Names, Violence, And The African American Vernacular In Richard Wright's The Outsider, Sarah Bailly May 2009

Names, Violence, And The African American Vernacular In Richard Wright's The Outsider, Sarah Bailly

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the names and violence in Richard Wright's The Outsider reveals Wright's aesthetic program for the novel. Wright's recurring themes and the meanings of the name and aliases of his protagonist are indicative of African American vernacular tradition. Despite Wright's physical distance from African American life in the United States at the time of the novel's writing, he still conveys a strong connection to the African American experience, linking that experience with the suffering of all oppressed people. By using the idea of double-consciousness and various forms of signification, including masking, naming, and improvisation, Wright locates his work …

Effects Of Air Temperature And Lake Ice On Snowfall On The South Shore Of Lake Superior, Angela Pelkie Maki May 2009

Effects Of Air Temperature And Lake Ice On Snowfall On The South Shore Of Lake Superior, Angela Pelkie Maki

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Lake Superior is a forcing factor for local weather systems, causing substantial amounts of lake effect snow in the winter (particularly on the south shore). This study assesses decreasing ice cover of Lake Superior and its effects upon synoptic weather factors. Data were collected from eleven National Weather Service (NWS) stations located on the south shore of the lake. Rainfall and snowfall amounts from December to May were regressed on percent ice coverage and average monthly temperatures from 1972-2002. Ice coverage and average monthly temperature had a negative relationship with snowfall and rainfall.

I Am What I Say I Am: Racial And Cultural Identity Among Creoles Of Color In New Orleans, Nikki Dugar May 2009

I Am What I Say I Am: Racial And Cultural Identity Among Creoles Of Color In New Orleans, Nikki Dugar

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the generational changes in the culture and racial self-identification of Creoles of Color of New Orleans. This study argues that the key to understanding Creole culture is the role that isolationism has played in its history. While White ethnics pursued a path of assimilation, Creoles of Color pursued a path of isolationism. This path served them well during the Jim Crow era, but it suddenly became undesirable during the Black Power era. Now, however, new values of multiculturalism have resurrected Creole identity as a cultural asset.

Trinkets Left By Katrina: How Changes To New Orleans' Landscape Have Led To Personal Attachment, Brandie Shauntelle Mitchell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Humans have an innate tendency to attach themselves to objects on their cultural landscape. After a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina, people seem to hold on to objects left behind by the disaster. This paper examines several of the concepts and reasons as to why attachments may have formed to objects left on New Orleans' landscape after Hurricane Katrina. I explored human reactions after a natural disaster, and discussed how memories, collective and individual, often lead to personal attachment to objects. In an attempt to get a better understanding of this phenomenon, 250 surveys were distributed to residents in the …

Latino Migrant Labor Strife And Solidarity In Post-Katrina New Orleans, 2005-2007, Leo Braselton Gorman May 2009

Latino Migrant Labor Strife And Solidarity In Post-Katrina New Orleans, 2005-2007, Leo Braselton Gorman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, lapses in federal policy-making and a lack of state level enforcement paved the way for employer exploitation of predominantly Latino migrant workers, transforming working-class Latino newcomers into the newest class of storm victims in post-Katrina New Orleans. In essence, a "rebuild above all else" recovery scenario took hold between 2005-2007 in which immediate reconstruction of the city took priority over the participation of local, African-American workers and the protection of immigrant worker rights. Despite their disadvantaged position, however, migrant workers did not remain passive victims to injustice but actively organized against employer abuse and …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The high number of working parents in the U.S. means that there are millions of child in need to care during working hours. Research shows that the quality of this care is of high importance in a child's development, both in the short-term and the long-term. States have used a variety of policy tools to regulate child care and to attempt to improve the quality of care. Louisiana has recently implemented a new policy called the Quality Rating System. Directors of centers in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, were interviewed to determine the impact of participation in QRS. Centers are struggling to …

Tenure Insecurity And Post-Disaster Housing: Case Studies In New Orleans And Tegucigalpa, Robert Charles Peterson May 2009

Tenure Insecurity And Post-Disaster Housing: Case Studies In New Orleans And Tegucigalpa, Robert Charles Peterson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses upon cases wherein post]disaster housing assistance was affected by tenure insecurity. In the case of post]Katrina New Orleans, the Road Home, which provided monies for rebuilding, faced difficulties in allocating its aid because of heirship titles, a form of tenure insecurity to which the United States has often been misconceived as immune. In the case of post]Hurricane Mitch in Tegucigalpa, a post]disaster housing relocation program struggled to find lands in an urban land market with pervasive insecurity

Multitemporal Imagery Based Analysis Of Urban Land In St. Tammany Parish In Conjunction With Socioeconomic Data, Jeffrey Joseph Varisco May 2009

Multitemporal Imagery Based Analysis Of Urban Land In St. Tammany Parish In Conjunction With Socioeconomic Data, Jeffrey Joseph Varisco

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The role of urbanization in the history of civilization is a profound and intricate part of human geography. By utilizing socioeconomic data and then integrating it with more technological innovations, such as remote sensing, the spread of sprawl and the urban corridor can better be mapped and quantified by researchers. Many different types of socioeconomic data were implemented in addition to the remotely sensed data. In this paper, six Landsat 5 TM images were used to create land cover classification maps of the developed or built-up land in St. Tammany Parish from 1984 to 2008. It was found that, in …

"An Ardent Military Spirit": William C. C. Claiborne And The Creation Of The Orleans Territorial Militia, 1803-1805, Joseph F. Stolz Iii

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase doubled the territory of the fledgling United States. Taking control of and defending the new territory, especially the culturally heterogeneous city of New Orleans occupied much of the administration's time. Most of the burden for establishing the defense policy rested on William C. C. Claiborne, a staunch Jeffersonian, former member of Congress from Tennessee, and previous governor of the Mississippi Territory. By working with local business leaders with a stake in American success, observing the local customs and traditions, and gradually encouraging political participation, Claiborne successfully introduced the American militia system to a culture far …

Fog Cooling, Wet Compression And Droplet Dynamics In Gas Turbine Compressors, Jobaidur Rahman Khan May 2009

Fog Cooling, Wet Compression And Droplet Dynamics In Gas Turbine Compressors, Jobaidur Rahman Khan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During hot days, gas turbine power output deteriorates significantly. Among various means to augment gas turbine output, inlet air fog cooling is considered as the simplest and most costeffective method. During fog cooling, water is atomized to micro-scaled droplets and introduced into the inlet airflow. In addition to cooling the inlet air, overspray can further enhance output power by intercooling the compressor. However, there are concerns that the water droplets might damage the compressor blades and increased mass might cause potential compressor operation instability due to reduced safety margin. Furthermore, the two-phase flow thermodynamics during wet compression in a rotating …

Toward Visualizing Potential Policy Conflicts In Extensible Access Control Markup Language (Xacml), William Domingo Rosa May 2009

Toward Visualizing Potential Policy Conflicts In Extensible Access Control Markup Language (Xacml), William Domingo Rosa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) is allowing enterprises to implement a standard way of access control to their resources. Security administrators no longer need to duplicate their efforts in writing multiple policies for different resources since a XACML policy can be applied to multiple resources. Companies such as IBM, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, and Cisco are already providing integration of XACML in their products. Although the introduction of XACML has provided enterprises with a better approach of commonly realizing access control, there are still inconsistencies that policy administrators need to be aware of. This thesis identifies some of the …
