Taintx: A System For Protecting Sensitive Documents, Patrice Dillon
Taintx: A System For Protecting Sensitive Documents, Patrice Dillon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Across the country members of the workforce are being laid off due to downsizing. Most of those people work for large corporations and have access to important company documents. There have been several studies suggesting that employees are taking critical information after learning they will be laid off. This becomes an issue and a threat to a corporation's security. Corporations are then placed in a position to make sure sensitive documents never leave the company. In this study we build a system that is used to assist corporations and systems administrators. This system will prevent users from taking sensitive documents. …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A cultivation-independent approach, sequence analysis of 18S rRNA genes PCR-amplified from environmental DNA, was used to explore the diversity and distribution of eukaryotic microbes inhabiting algal mats in two acidic geothermal streams in Yellowstone National Park. The objectives were to: (1) clarify the identity of mat forming algae in Nymph Creek (2) survey microbial species in the Nymph Creek mat over seasonal intervals along a thermal gradient (3) compare microbial species in the Nymph Creek mat with those in Alluvium Creek mats (4) evaluate microbial species in algal mats formed on different substrates in Alluvium Creek. The results show that …
American Anti-Welfare Right-Wing Populism: The Case Of Bucktown, Matt S. Landry
American Anti-Welfare Right-Wing Populism: The Case Of Bucktown, Matt S. Landry
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Is there support for voluntary sterilization incentives in the U.S.? Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with a snowball sample of four families spanning three generations in Bucktown, a 95% white, middle-class neighborhood which sent David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1989. Interviews explain support and opposition to current Louisiana State Representative John LaBruzzo's policy suggestion to "end generational welfare" by offering citizens $1000 in exchange for having their fallopian tubes tied or receiving vasectomies. Most respondents expressed that the sterilization proposal was targeted at low-income blacks. Although work ethic …

A Combined Motif Discovery Method, Daming Lu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A central problem in the bioinformatics is to find the binding sites for regulatory motifs. This is a challenging problem that leads us to a platform to apply a variety of data mining methods. In the efforts described here, a combined motif discovery method that uses mutual information and Gibbs sampling was developed. A new scoring schema was introduced with mutual information and joint information content involved. Simulated tempering was embedded into classic Gibbs sampling to avoid local optima. This method was applied to the 18 pieces DNA sequences containing CRP binding sites validated by Stormo and the results were …
Classification Of Carpiodes Using Fourier Descriptors: A Content Based Image Retrieval Approach, Patrick Trahan
Classification Of Carpiodes Using Fourier Descriptors: A Content Based Image Retrieval Approach, Patrick Trahan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Taxonomic classification has always been important to the study of any biological system. Many biological species will go unclassified and become lost forever at the current rate of classification. The current state of computer technology makes image storage and retrieval possible on a global level. As a result, computer-aided taxonomy is now possible. Content based image retrieval techniques utilize visual features of the image for classification. By utilizing image content and computer technology, the gap between taxonomic classification and species destruction is shrinking. This content based study utilizes the Fourier Descriptors of fifteen known landmark features on three Carpiodes species: …
Mineralogy Of Eudialyte Group Minerals From The East Hill Suite Of The Mont Saint-Hilaire Alkaline Plutonic Complex, Including An Alternative Site-Assignment Algorithm & A Proposed Classification System, Peter Tice
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The twenty approved members of the eudialyte group are complex zirconosilicates, primarily with general formula N15M(1)6M(2)3M(3)M(4)Z3[Si24O72]O4X2. An algorithm was created to address the inherent recalculation difficulties in the absence of single-crystal X-ray data and was an overall improvement over previous schemes. Eudialyte group minerals were analyzed from the East Hill Suite of the Mont Saint-Hilaire alkaline complex. Recalculations revealed previously undocumented eudialyte-group compositions and degrees of chemical zonation. These data suggest that late-stage melt heterogeneity in alkaline systems is far more pronounced than previously thought. All analyses exhibited a negative neodymium anomaly in chondrite-normalized data. This supports data from other …
Using Two-Dimensional Numerical Models To Analyze Hydraulic Effects Of Constricted Flows Through The Rigolets Pass Between Lake Pontchartrain And Lake Borgne, Marc Ischen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine if numerical models commonly used for large scale applications could also be used to model flow through flood control structures in the Rigolets Pass between Lake Borgne and Lake Pontchartrain. For this purpose a small scale physical model was built. It showed that bi-stable flow can develop downstream of a constriction. Small changes in the distribution of the approaching flow significantly impacted flows downstream of the constriction. This behavior could not be properly reproduced by a small scale 2-dimensional RMA2 model of identical dimensions. A large scale RMA2 model of the Rigolets …

Nanoscale Thermal Fluctuation Spectroscopy, Patrick Louis Garrity
Nanoscale Thermal Fluctuation Spectroscopy, Patrick Louis Garrity
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The utilization of thermal fluctuations or Johnson/Nyquist noise as a spectroscopic method to determine transport properties in conductors or semiconductors is developed in this paper. The autocorrelation function is obtained from power spectral density measurements thus enabling electronic transport property calculation through the Green-Kubo formalism. This experimental approach is distinct from traditional numerical methods such as molecular dynamics simulations, which have been used to extract the autocorrelation function and directly related physics only. This work reports multi-transport property measurements consisting of the electronic relaxation time, resistivity, mobility, diffusion coefficient, electronic contribution to thermal conductivity and Lorenz number from experimental data. …

Behind The Fan: Conservative Activists In The New Orleans Christian Woman's Exchange, 1881-1891, Gabrielle Walker
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In 1881, Margaret Bartlett of New Orleans crafted the Christian Woman's Exchange using the New York Exchange chapter as a model. Bartlett hoped this new organization would help alleviate at least some of the economic suffering "reduced gentlewomen"faced. Despite the Exchange's original mission to help the elite, the group soon crossed class and racial boundaries in a campaign of conservative activism. The Christian Woman's Exchange helped women provide for their families by training them to produce homemade goods for sale in consignment shops. Simultaneously, working-class women found employment within the Christian Woman's Exchange lunch room and other business ventures. Since …

Primary Systems And Voter Turnout: Measuring The Institutional Effect Of Primary Type On Voter Turnout, Leslie Lott
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Using the 1990, 1994 and 1998 Congressional mid-term elections, this study looks at whether the type of primary system in a person's state has an effect on whether or not that person will vote in the general election. The five types of primary systems (closed, semi-closed, semiopen, open and blanket) are explained as well as traditional factors for likelihood of voting. It is hypothesized that the more closed the primary system, the less likely a person is to vote. Data analysis shows that when significant, living in an open primary state does significantly increase the likelihood that a person will …
Perceptions Of Complexions: Consciousness And Self-Identification Among Dark-Skinned Blacks, Brian Kenneth Morris
Perceptions Of Complexions: Consciousness And Self-Identification Among Dark-Skinned Blacks, Brian Kenneth Morris
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Skin tone variation within American black communities has long been associated with intraracial stratification. Data from the National Survey of Black Americans (NSBA) indicate that lighter-skinned blacks – net of such factors as region of residence, age, and sex – consistently have higher levels of nearly every socioeconomic indicator including educational attainment, personal and family income, and perceived physical attractiveness when compared to their darker counterparts. What does this color caste system mean for the personal identities and emotional experiences of dark-skinned blacks in America? Using data from the NSBA and six interviews with dark-skinned blacks, I set forth social …

A House Divided: The Evolution Of The Louisiana Superdome From A Divisive Concept Into A Symbol Of New Orleans And The Surrounding Areas, Matthew B. Higgins
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis examines the development of the Louisiana Superdome from a concept that created division amongst the people of Louisiana, including those in the New Orleans metropolitan area, to a facility that would serve as, "a symbol of our recovery". This thesis begins with the fanfare and euphoria from the reopening of the Superdome in September 2006 following millions of dollars worth of damage from Hurricane Katrina and from those using it as a "shelter of last resort". It then introduces some of the major players in the Superdome's development from a divisive concept into a symbol of the …

Information Session, Jessica Bizer
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
My work concerns the divergent narratives created by fusing varied, often conflicting, textures, colors and fabrics, into a tenuous order. I intend for these otherwise clashing materials to create drama that is simultaneously enthusiastic, epic and ambiguous. While this media's formal properties re an important component of my work, the material's cultural and art-historical associations are also are critical ingredient. In this thesis, I will explore the use of the varied collage material, hierarchical compositions and contemporary influence of 19th Century Romantic themes as they relate to forming a variety of distinctly contemporary narratives in my compositions. I will investigate …
Stigma, Surgery And Social Identity: Attitudes Towards Cosmetic And Sexual Reassignment Surgeries, Cheryl Mayeux
Stigma, Surgery And Social Identity: Attitudes Towards Cosmetic And Sexual Reassignment Surgeries, Cheryl Mayeux
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses a combination of vignettes and interviews to explore social approval of cosmetic and sexual reassignment surgeries as a means of studying sex and gender in contemporary society. It draws from poststructuralist, queer, symbolic interactionist and intersectionality theories. This study found that social approval was higher for normative surgeries than for non-normative surgeries. The main themes that emerged in regard to social approval were respondents‘ religious beliefs, their social distance from a person undergoing surgery, their concerns with possible risks or complications, and their views on an individual‘s right to control their own body. Underlying the vast majority …
Enhanced Blue Crab Predation On Rangia Clams After Exposure To Hypoxia, Ann C. Howard
Enhanced Blue Crab Predation On Rangia Clams After Exposure To Hypoxia, Ann C. Howard
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Hypoxia or dissolved oxygen concentrations < 2 mg/L is a problem in estuaries worldwide. In Lake Pontchartrain, a 250 km2 de-faunated zone exists as a result of salinity stratification and episodic hypoxia. Mature common rangia clams (Rangia cuneata) are not found within this zone. Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) are important estuarine predators and may move in and out of the hypoxic zone to feed on hypoxia-stressed rangia clams. To test the effects of hypoxia on predation, rangia clams were exposed experimentally to severe hypoxic conditions (< 0.75 mg/l) for 72-hours and then presented to blue crabs. One hypoxic and one normoxic clam were added to each aquarium containing a blue crab for each trial, and crab feeding choices were observed and recorded. I found prey choice varied among crabs, but in general, the experimental data demonstrates that crabs chose to feed on hypoxia-stressed clams over clams kept under normoxic conditions.

In this thesis we proposed and implemented the MMR, a new and open-source MapRe- duce model with MPI for parallel and distributed programing. MMR combines Pthreads, MPI and the Google's MapReduce processing model to support multi-threaded as well as dis- tributed parallelism. Experiments show that our model signi cantly outperforms the leading open-source solution, Hadoop. It demonstrates linear scaling for CPU-intensive processing and even super-linear scaling for indexing-related workloads. In addition, we designed a MMR live DVD which facilitates the automatic installation and con guration of a Linux cluster with integrated MMR library which enables the development and execution of …
In-Situ Scanning Electron Microscopy For Electron-Beam Lithography And In-Situ One Dimensional Nano Materials Characterization, Renhai Long
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we demonstrate in-situ scanning electron microscopy techniques for both electron beam lithography (EBL) and in-situ one dimensional nano materials electrical characterization. A precise voltage contrast image positioning for in-situ EBL to integrate nanowires into suspended structures for nanoswitch fabrication has been developed. The in-situ EBL eliminates the stage movement error and field stitching error by preventing any movements of the stage during the nanolithography process; hence, a high precision laser stage and alignment marks on the substrate are not needed, which simplifies the traditional EBL process. The ZnO piezoelectronics is also studied using nano-manipulators in scanning electron …

Framework And Evolution Of A Transgressed Delta Lobe: The St. Bernard Shoals, Gulf Of Mexico, Bryan E. Rogers
Framework And Evolution Of A Transgressed Delta Lobe: The St. Bernard Shoals, Gulf Of Mexico, Bryan E. Rogers
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Four modern shoals on the Louisiana continental shelf are proposed to have formed through transgression, marine reworking, and submergence of Mississippi River deltaic lobes. However, one of these shoals, the St. Bernard Shoals, is dissimilar to the other shoals in morphology and stratigraphy. Understanding the processes that lead to these differences resulted in the development of a wholly new model for subaqueous shoal evolution. The results of this study suggest that the St. Bernard Shoals are transgressive remnants of a near shelf-edge delta lobe that was transgressed and truncated by marine processes after fluvial abandonment. Subsequent to truncation, the shoals …
Determination Of Mueller Matrix Elements In The Presence Of Imperfections In Optical Components, Shibalik Chakraborty
Determination Of Mueller Matrix Elements In The Presence Of Imperfections In Optical Components, Shibalik Chakraborty
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Polarizer-Sample-Analyzer (PSA) arrangement with the optical components P and A rotating with a fixed speed ratio (3:1) was originally introduced to determine nine Mueller matrix elements from Fourier analysis of the output signal of a photodetector. The arrangement is modified to the P'PSAA' arrangement where P' and A' represent fixed polarizers that are added at both ends with the speed ratio of the rotating components (P and A) remaining the same as before. After determination of the partial Mueller matrix in the ideal case, azimuthal offsets and imperfection parameters are introduced in the straight-through configuration and the imperfection parameters …
