Malware Recognition By Properties Of Executables, Cory Redfern
Malware Recognition By Properties Of Executables, Cory Redfern
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores what patterns, if any, exist to differentiate non-malware from malware, given only a sequence of raw bytes composing either a received file or a fixed-length initial segment of a received file. If any such patterns are found, their effectiveness as filtering criteria is investigated.
Sources Of Nest Failure In Mississippi Sandhill Cranes, Grus Canadensis Pulla: Nest Survival Modeling And Predator Occupancy, Rose Butler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Low recruitment is the largest challenge facing the recovery of the critically endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis pulla). Lack of information on sources of nest failure hinders effective management to increase recruitment. I examined sources of nest failure for 54 nests at the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge, 2008-2009. Nest cameras identified predation as the primary source of failure, followed by flooding, abandonment, and egg inviability. Mean daily survival rate (DSR) was 0.72. The best approximating models included covariates for season date, temperature and nest age. DSR decreased with increasing season date, increasing nest age, and decreasing temperature. …
Perceptions And Concerns Of Novice Secondary Teachers In Louisiana: The Relationship Of Novice Secondary Teacher Stress To Their Perception Of Principal Leadership, Victoria Sanderlin Hand
Perceptions And Concerns Of Novice Secondary Teachers In Louisiana: The Relationship Of Novice Secondary Teacher Stress To Their Perception Of Principal Leadership, Victoria Sanderlin Hand
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The demand for highly qualified teachers is well documented, yet numerous stressors influence educators to leave their positions. The guiding question for this study was: Is there a relationship between perceived principal leadership behavior and the stress experienced by the novice secondary teacher? The target population was novice teachers in Louisiana. The purposive sample was delimited to novice secondary teachers having six semesters of teaching experience or less in grades 6 through 12. The ten largest parishes in Louisiana were selected to sample. Four of the ten parishes granted permission to survey novice secondary teachers. The Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, …
Spirituality As A Validating Factor And Intrinsic Motivator To Persistence: A Study Of Nontraditional Female Students In Community/Technical Colleges, Camille Laperouse Jarrell
Spirituality As A Validating Factor And Intrinsic Motivator To Persistence: A Study Of Nontraditional Female Students In Community/Technical Colleges, Camille Laperouse Jarrell
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
While traditional theories are useful in the study of persistence in some nontraditional students, many nontraditional female students are at high risk of not successfully persisting towards their educational goals. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of spirituality, as a validating factor and an intrinsic motivator to persist, in nontraditional female students in community and technical colleges. A hermeneutic phenomenology research design was used with the "lived experiences" of these women articulated through their own voices. Although the study did not have a rigid set of fixed procedures, van Manens (1990) suggested activities for …
The Perspectives Of First-Year Principals Regarding Their Experiences With Mentors And The Mentoring Process Within The Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction (Leli) Program, Sabrah Helms Kingham
The Perspectives Of First-Year Principals Regarding Their Experiences With Mentors And The Mentoring Process Within The Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction (Leli) Program, Sabrah Helms Kingham
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Are new school administrators prepared for the surprises, obstacles, and opportunities they are likely to encounter during the first-year in their new role? Sadly enough, too many new leaders do not feel prepared to meet the challenges of their new role as an administrator. In 2006, the National Center for Education Statistics (2006) reported that there were 95,726 administrators in the U. S. Within this pool of administrators, approximately 127 were new hires in the state of Louisiana (LDE, 2006). In an effort to find ways to support, guide, and retain new principals, the Louisiana Educational Leaders Network, under the …
Evaluation Of The Genetic Management Of The Endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pulla), Jessica Renee Henkel
Evaluation Of The Genetic Management Of The Endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pulla), Jessica Renee Henkel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The genetic status of the critically endangered Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) was analyzed using 2009 studbook data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service managed captive breeding and release program. Microsatellite DNA data provided information on shared founder genotypes, allowing for refined analysis of genetic variation in the population, and informed breeding recommendations. The genetic variation observed in the Mississippi sandhill crane was contrasted with variation observed in the Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis). Results show far less variation in the Mississippi population. Results also suggest that while gene flow no longer occurs between the two populations, …
The Relationship Between Supervisors' Power Bases And Supervisory Styles, Hideyuki Tanaka
The Relationship Between Supervisors' Power Bases And Supervisory Styles, Hideyuki Tanaka
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Despite its critical role in counselor training, empirical research on clinical supervision is generally limited (Bernard & Goodyear, 2003; Ellis & Ladany, 2007). This is also applied to an area of power dynamics in supervision. This study tested the relationship between the two aspects of power dynamics; namely, supervisors' power bases (i.e., sources of influencing others) and supervisory styles (i.e., typical ways of shaping supervision), based on the system's approach to supervision model (Holloway, 1995). This research was a correlational design. Students in masters' and doctoral counseling programs were asked to respond to an online questionnaire packet via Survey MonkeyTM. …
Study Of Magnetization Switching For Mram Based Memory Technologies, Huy Pham
Study Of Magnetization Switching For Mram Based Memory Technologies, Huy Pham
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Understanding magnetization reversal is very important in designing high density and high data transfer rate recording media. This research has been motivated by interest in developing new nonvolatile data storage solutions as magnetic random access memories - MRAMs. This dissertation is intended to provide a theoretical analysis of static and dynamic magnetization switching of magnetic systems within the framework of critical curve (CC). Based on the time scale involved, a quasi-static or dynamic CC approach is used. The static magnetization switching can be elegantly described using the concept of critical curves. The critical curves of simple uncoupled films used in …
Automation Of The Client Side Of Web Services Using Php, Menad Medjkane
Automation Of The Client Side Of Web Services Using Php, Menad Medjkane
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Web Services have been the dominant technology in business integration and implementation of service oriented architectures. PHP is a server-side language popular for development of applications. A significant advantage of PHP is its light weight development for feature-rich web applications. Typically, PHP is used for making good-looking front end user interfaces; Java or other programming languages are used to develop the back end application. A secure and robust way for PHP programs to call back-end services is by Web Services. However, when the Web Service operations have complex interfaces, writing PHP client code can be difficult and error-prone. This thesis …
Meta State Generalized Hidden Markov Model For Eukaryotic Gene Structure Identification, Carl Baribault
Meta State Generalized Hidden Markov Model For Eukaryotic Gene Structure Identification, Carl Baribault
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Using a generalized-clique hidden Markov model (HMM) as the starting point for a eukaryotic gene finder, the objective here is to strengthen the signal information at the transitions between coding and non-coding (c/nc) regions. This is done by enlarging the primitive hidden states associated with individual base labeling (as exon, intron, or junk) to substrings of primitive hidden states or footprint states. Moreover, the allowed footprint transitions are restricted to those that include either one c/nc transition or none at all. (This effectively imposes a minimum length on exons and the other regions.) These footprint states allow the c/nc transitions …

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand teachers' experiences related to the implementation of Reading First in the classroom and more specifically, how Reading First has impacted curriculum, instruction, assessment, student achievement, and professional development. The participants for this study were five certified, kindergarten and first grade public school teachers. In depth interviews were conducted with each participant regarding her experiences with the implementation of Reading First. Once collected, the data was then analyzed according to a method advanced by Moustakas (1994) and reported. Findings and recommendations included, but were not limited to the following: 1. There are …
Reliable Multicast In Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Lawrence Klos
Reliable Multicast In Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Lawrence Klos
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A mobile wireless ad hoc network (MANET) consists of a group of mobile nodes communicating wirelessly with no fixed infrastructure. Each node acts as source or receiver, and all play a role in path discovery and packet routing. MANETs are growing in popularity due to multiple usage models, ease of deployment and recent advances in hardware with which to implement them. MANETs are a natural environment for multicasting, or group communication, where one source transmits data packets through the network to multiple receivers. Proposed applications for MANET group communication ranges from personal network apps, impromptu small scale business meetings and …

Vegetative Response To Hurricane Sedimentation, Jennifer Carter Roberts
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the response of the dominant salt marsh macrophyte Spartina alterniflora var. Loisel to sedimentation from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. A range of sedimentation was used to track the above and belowground plant response, as well as the volume of mineral and organic matter, in the upper reaches of the marsh soil from September 2008 to April 2009. Where storm sedimentation was greatest (~3.5 cm), there were significant increases in live aboveground biomass. Although live belowground biomass did not change significantly over time, the volumetric contribution of both mineral and soil organic matter in the shallow marsh soil …
A Hybrid Method For Predicting Lift And Drag Of Semi-Planing/Semi-Displacement Hull Forms, Brandon Taravella
A Hybrid Method For Predicting Lift And Drag Of Semi-Planing/Semi-Displacement Hull Forms, Brandon Taravella
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
With the ever present desire for ships and boats to run faster while carrying a greater load, a need exists to reduce the drag while simultaneously increasing hydrodynamic lift. Therefore, a need for semi-planing/semi-displacement hullforms exists for vessels to carry relatively high loads (between 500 and 3000 tons) with a general length Froude number range between 0.4 and 1.0. A hybrid method for calculating the lift and drag of semi-planing/semi-displacement hull forms is developed. This is done by separating the kinematic boundary condition into odd and even parts. The odd and even parts of the kinematic boundary condition are solved …
Race, Representation, And Recovery: Documenting The 2006 New Orleans Mayoral Elections, Katherine Cecil
Race, Representation, And Recovery: Documenting The 2006 New Orleans Mayoral Elections, Katherine Cecil
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the rhetorical and visual manifestations of race as they figured in the months prior to and within the 2006 New Orleans mayoral election discourses, and examines how the Nagin campaign tapped into a strategy that capitalized upon pre-existing racial tensions exacerbated by Katrina in order to win re-election. Much of the research for this thesis emerged from the making of a documentary film that examines the intersection between race and politics within this same election, and draws upon primary source video interviews conducted between February - May, 2006, and secondary source media and communications materials to posit …

New Orleans' Plasterers' Union Local 93: Afro-Creole Identity, Family And Organized Labor, 1898-1954, Darryl Barthe
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Operative Plasterers and Cement Masons International Union Local 93 was founded as a racially integrated union in New Orleans at the turn of the twentieth century. The Union was established by Irish Americans and New Orleans Afro-Creoles and represents a continuation of an Afro-Creole protest tradition that had existed since the eighteenth century in Louisiana. The cooperation between these Irish and Afro-Creole plasterers represented a social sodality of working class whites and bourgeois Afro-Creoles who defied social convention for mutual benefit. Through Local 93, Afro-Creoles were able to assert their political equality with whites and Irish Americans were able …

A New Orleans State Of Crime: Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Shifting Homicide Patterns In Post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, La, Lauren Childs
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Dubbed the "most murderous" and "deadliest" city in the United States during 2006, 2007 and 2008, New Orleans has wrestled with crime and murder since its founding in 1718. Following Hurricane Katrina the city saw an increase in the murder rate despite a sharp decrease in population. The focus of this project was to map homicide data trends in the city of New Orleans over a period of seven years, 2002 to 2008, and compare spatial and temporal patterns via GIS. NOPD homicide location data were geocoded and analyzed in ESRI's ArcGIS geospatial software. Methodologies of hotspot detection included point …
Characterization Of Slr1098, A Protein With Similarity To The Bilin Lyase Subunit Cpce From The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Kali Hicks
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research is to investigate the role of the slr1098 gene in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a gene with similarity to cpcE which encodes a subunit of an enzyme involved in bilin attachment to phycocyanin. This protein is hypothesized to be involved in oligomerization of phycocyanin due to previous results showing the mutant made shorter phycocyanin rods. The recombinant Slr1098 protein was produced and purified from E. coli cells. Binding assays showed interaction between Slr1098 and both apo- and holo-phycocyanin, but not to apo-allophycocyanin. Slr1098 blocked bilin addition at Cys-82 on CpcB by the CpcS/CpcU …
Differences In Offending Patterns Between Adolescent Sex Offenders High Or Low In Callous And Unemotional Traits, Katie Lawing
Differences In Offending Patterns Between Adolescent Sex Offenders High Or Low In Callous And Unemotional Traits, Katie Lawing
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Adolescents commit nearly one-fifth of the sex crimes each year. Among those offenders exists a group of adolescent sex offenders with callous and unemotional (CU) traits who seem to show a more severe pattern of sexual offending. The current study attempts to test the importance of these traits by comparing adolescent sex offenders high or low on CU traits based on victim and offense characteristics, and offending history. A sample of 150 detained adolescents with a current sexual offense conviction were assessed through self-report, clinical interview, and file review. Results indicated that after controlling for a history of antisocial behaviors, …
Face-Work Within Blogs: The Use And Modification Of Real World Rituals Within A Virtual Setting, Matthew Leblanc
Face-Work Within Blogs: The Use And Modification Of Real World Rituals Within A Virtual Setting, Matthew Leblanc
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In his Essay "On Face-Work" Erving Goffman identifies the rules for a number of face-to-face interaction rituals. Among these rituals are two ways of correcting participants within an interaction. The first correction ritual, the interchange, allows offending interactants a chance to save face. The second ritual, the points making game, is a way for interactants to cause other participants to lose face. This thesis analyzes the content of a random sample of blogs to see if the rituals described above are employed in online interaction, specifically looking at blogs and how the context of the rituals is modified, including whether …
An Analysis Of Netcdf-Fastbit Integration And Primitive Spatial-Temporal Operations, David Marks
An Analysis Of Netcdf-Fastbit Integration And Primitive Spatial-Temporal Operations, David Marks
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A process allowing for the intuitive use of SQL queries on dense multidimensional data stored in Network Common Data Format (netCDF) files is developed using advanced bitmap indexing provided by the FastBit bitmap indexing tool. A method for netCDF data extraction and FastBit index creation is presented and a geospatial Range and pseudo-KNN search based on the haversine function is implemented via SQL. A two step filtering algorithm is shown to greatly enhance the speed of these geospatial queries, allowing for extremely efficient processing of the netCDF data in bitmap indexed form.
A Multidisciplinary Approach For Determining The Extents Of The Beds Of Complex Natural Lakes In Louisiana, Frank Levins Willis
A Multidisciplinary Approach For Determining The Extents Of The Beds Of Complex Natural Lakes In Louisiana, Frank Levins Willis
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In Louisiana, the beds of natural lakes are owned by the state. The locations of property boundary lines separating state property from private lands have usually been set by determining the levels of natural monuments known as ordinary high water marks. The term is confusing and subjective, leading to controversy in reference to its determination. Catahoula Lake in central Louisiana was chosen as a study site because of its large size, its 20-foot variation in water levels, and its low-relief perimeter. Geology, geomorphology, hydrology, archaeology, vegetation, dendrochronology and dendrohydrology of the ancient cypress fringe, nineteenth century land survey records, historical …
Distributed Support Vector Machine With Graphics Processing Units, Hang Zhang
Distributed Support Vector Machine With Graphics Processing Units, Hang Zhang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Training a Support Vector Machine (SVM) requires the solution of a very large quadratic programming (QP) optimization problem. Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) is a decomposition-based algorithm which breaks this large QP problem into a series of smallest possible QP problems. However, it still costs O(n2) computation time. In our SVM implementation, we can do training with huge data sets in a distributed manner (by breaking the dataset into chunks, then using Message Passing Interface (MPI) to distribute each chunk to a different machine and processing SVM training within each chunk). In addition, we moved the kernel calculation part in SVM …

In June 2003, the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center conducted an acoustic characterization experiment for a standard seismic exploration array. Two moorings with Environmental Acoustic Recording Systems (EARS) were deployed in the northern part of the Gulf of Mexico to measure ambient noise and collect shot information. A 21-element seismic airgun array was towed along five parallel linear tracks with horizontal closest approach points to the EARS buoy position of 63, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 m. Calibrated acoustic pressure measurements collected during the experiment were analyzed to obtain zero-to-peak sound pressures, sound exposure levels, and pressure levels in 1/3-octave frequency …
A Numerical Study Of Unsteady Natural Convection In A Rectangular Enclosure -- The Effect Of Variable Thermodynamic And Transport Properties, Manohar Chidurala
A Numerical Study Of Unsteady Natural Convection In A Rectangular Enclosure -- The Effect Of Variable Thermodynamic And Transport Properties, Manohar Chidurala
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A two-dimensional mathematical model is adopted to investigate the development of buoyancy driven circulation patterns and temperature contours inside a rectangular enclosure filled with a compressible fluid where one of the vertical walls of the enclosure is kept at a higher temperature than the opposite one. Fluid thermodynamic and transport properties are assumed to be functions of temperature. The governing equations are discretized using second order accurate differencing for spatial and temporal derivatives and then linearized using Newton's linearization method. The resulting set of algebraic equations is solved using the Coupled Modified Strongly Implicit Procedure for the unknowns of the …

Levees, Urbanization And Public Perception: Implications For Southeast Louisiana Wetlands, Jacquelyn Marchand
Levees, Urbanization And Public Perception: Implications For Southeast Louisiana Wetlands, Jacquelyn Marchand
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The wetlands of Louisiana have provided protection against floods and storms for thousands of years. With the construction of the Mississippi River levees and increased urbanization the wetlands are quickly disappearing, thus leaving the area vulnerable to hurricane storm surge. Since Hurricane Katrina, levees have been showcased as the only way of fully protecting southeast Louisiana from floods and storms; however, this is also being accompanied by a push for more funding for coastal restoration. There is evidence that hurricane protection levees and coastal restoration are incompatible. This research examines the implications of levees on the wetlands both directly and …
Gender At Work: The Role Of Habitus And Gender-Performance In Service Industry Occupations, Laura Dean-Shapiro
Gender At Work: The Role Of Habitus And Gender-Performance In Service Industry Occupations, Laura Dean-Shapiro
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between gender roles and habitus in service industry occupations. It draws primarily from the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler. Data includes an exploratory focus group, non-participant observations and interviews with women currently or formerly employed as bartenders, bar backs, servers, or hostesses. The main themes that emerged included how habitus is affected by views of employment, drug and alcohol use, the naturalization of gender roles, and the effect of appearance standards. This study supports previous feminist works that posit that gender as a performance, not a biological trait. Further this performance is used …
