Four e-commerce Web applications were implemented for this project. These applications show how real-world Web services work and interact with each other. By systematically planting a number of errors into the services, we created a learning environment for the students to understand the system structure and basic programming through their critical thinking. A goal is to keep …

State Estimation With Unconventional And Networked Measurements, Zhansheng Duan May 2010

State Estimation With Unconventional And Networked Measurements, Zhansheng Duan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two main parts. One is about state estimation with two types of unconventional measurements and the other is about two types of network-induced state estimation problems. The two types of unconventional measurements considered are noise-free measurements and set measurements. State estimation with them has numerous real supports. For state estimation with noisy and noise-free measurements, two sequential forms of the batch linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) estimator are obtained to reduce the computational complexity. Inspired by the estimation with quantized measurements developed by Curry [28], under a Gaussian assumption, the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) state estimator …

Deconstructing Gender In New Orleans: The Impact Of Patriarchy And Social Vulnerability Before And After A Natural Disaster, Alicia Jencik

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

On August 29th, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans, LA, causing catastrophic damage to the metropolitan area. The hurricane also exposed many of the racial, ethnic, and class-based vulnerabilities experienced by many New Orleanians. However, as is typically the case, gender was ignored in most media accounts in the aftermath of the disaster. This project examines the gendered dimensions of the disaster experience using New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina as a case study. Evidence from University of New Orleans Survey Research data indicates various gender differences from the initial response to the recovery efforts months later. Few gender …

Legal Exoneration: A Case Study Through The Life History Of John Thompson, Celeste Lofton-Bagert May 2010

Legal Exoneration: A Case Study Through The Life History Of John Thompson, Celeste Lofton-Bagert

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The term "exonerated"‖refers to a legal acquittal of a former conviction due to the introduction of new evidence. Since 1989, the number of legal xonerations has increased dramatically due to DNA and other new evidentiary technologies that can demonstrate innocence of formally convicted persons. This research focuses on the lived experience of exoneration and its aftermath through a life history of John Thompson (JT), a New Orleans native, convicted of murder and sentenced to death in 1985. In 2003, after eighteen years in Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, fourteen on death row, JT was exonerated. Exoneration theoretically removes the official …

Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen Sulfide Emission Factors Applicable To Wastewater Wet Wells, Madhuri Mudragaddam May 2010

Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen Sulfide Emission Factors Applicable To Wastewater Wet Wells, Madhuri Mudragaddam

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Transport of wastewater in sewer networks causes potential problems associated with gases which include ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and methane, in regard to odor nuisance, irritation, toxicity, and microbially induced corrosion. The extent of these problems depends on the emission rates of gases in the sewer atmosphere. To limit these kinds of problems an estimate of the gases emitted from the sewer network is to be known. In consideration to the above mentioned problems, a research has been taken up to estimate the two gases, namely, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from sewer wet wells. In this …

The composite particles exhibited very high fluorescence, were functionalized with antibodies, and were used as signal transducers for the detection of a protein expressed by breast cancer cells. The second project focused in more detail on the detection capabilities of the quantum dot-silica composites. …

Comprehensive Modeling And Numerical Investigation Of Entrained-Flow Coal Gasifiers, Armin Silaen May 2010

Comprehensive Modeling And Numerical Investigation Of Entrained-Flow Coal Gasifiers, Armin Silaen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Numerical simulations of coal gasification process inside a generic 2-stage entrainedflow gasifier are carried out using the commercial CFD solver ANSYS/FLUENT. The 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and eight species transport equations are solved with three heterogeneous global reactions, three homogeneous reactions, and one thermal cracking equation of volatiles. Finite rates are used for the heterogeneous solid-gas reactions. Both finite rate and eddy-breakup combustion models are calculated for each homogeneous gas-gas reaction, and the smaller of the two rates is used. Lagrangian-Eulerian method is employed. The Eulerian method calculates the continuous phase while the Lagrangian method tracks each coal particle. Fundamental study …

Behind The Banner Of Patriotism: The New Orleans Chapter Of The American Red Cross And Auxiliary Branches 6 And 11 (1914-1917), Paula A. Fortier

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Socialite Laura Penrose and a group of wealthy businessmen founded the New Orleans Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1916. The Chapter expanded in 1917 with the addition of two black Auxiliary Branches chartered by nurses Louise Ross and Sarah Brown. Although Jim Crow dictated the division between the Chapter and its Branches within the mostly female organization, racial barriers did not prohibit them from uniting for the cause of national relief. The American Red Cross differed from other forms of biracial Progressivism by the very nature of public relief work for a national charity. American Red Cross relief …

Non-Physical Forms Of Intimate Partner Violence In Lesbian Relationships, Jessica L. Giordano May 2010

Non-Physical Forms Of Intimate Partner Violence In Lesbian Relationships, Jessica L. Giordano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An extensive review of the existing literature makes apparent that academics who study intimate partner violence focus primarily on physical violence in heterosexual relationships. Non-physical forms of abuse receive secondary attention, despite reported claims from survivors that non-physical forms of abuse are more common, more painful, and have longer lasting effects than physical forms of abuse. The dominant focus on intimate partner violence as a social problem enacted by males on their female partners results in a lack of sufficient literature or conversation pertaining to abuse that exists outside these parameters. Members of sexual minority groups are deliberately excluded from …

Households And Neighborhoods Among Free People Of Color In New Orleans: A View From The Census, 1850-1860, Frank Joseph Lovato May 2010

Households And Neighborhoods Among Free People Of Color In New Orleans: A View From The Census, 1850-1860, Frank Joseph Lovato

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Historians have debated to what extent the free people of color in New Orleans were members of a wealthy privileged elite or part of a middle or working class in the South's largest antebellum city. This study steps outside the debate to suggest that analysis of the censuses of 1850 and 1860 shows correlations between neighborhoods, household structures, and occupations that reveal a heterogeneous population that eludes simple definitions. In particular this study focuses on mixed-race households to shed light on this segment of the free colored population that is mostly unstudied and generally misrepresented. This study also finds that …

The "Re-Latinization" Of New Orleans In The Twentieth Century: Multiple Waves Of Hispanic Migration, Carlos M. Martinez Ii May 2010

The "Re-Latinization" Of New Orleans In The Twentieth Century: Multiple Waves Of Hispanic Migration, Carlos M. Martinez Ii

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Latin Americans immigrating to New Orleans during the Jim Crow period found New Orleans to be a place where they could assimilate. Several factors produced a tolerant climate for Latin Americans. These included New Orleanians' tolerant attitude, which was possible since Latin Americans arrived in small numbers and different waves. Latinos also helped develop trade with Latin America. Also, unlike other areas in the country, immigrants that came to New Orleans came from all over Central and South America. They were a highly skilled group and acted as cultural and power brokers between Latin America and the city. In spite …

Floating Bath Houses: Public Health And Recreation For The Working Class In Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, Christina Offutt May 2010

Floating Bath Houses: Public Health And Recreation For The Working Class In Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, Christina Offutt

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

One seemingly lost aspect of working-class life in antebellum New Orleans stems from the effort of entrepreneurs to provide bathing and swimming facilities for the city's working poor. In exchange for a relatively inexpensive fee per use, working-class New Orleanians served as the customer base for “floating pools” moored along the Mississippi riverfront. Beginning in 1836, these pools represented a transitional phase between the long extant tradition of bathing and swimming for free in the river and the development of commercialized, waterfront pleasure resorts for the masses in the late 1800s. Close proximity of working class neighborhoods to the river …

The Bomb On The Bayou: Nuclear Fear And Public Indifference In New Orleans, 1945 - 1966, Gregory J. Schloesser May 2010

The Bomb On The Bayou: Nuclear Fear And Public Indifference In New Orleans, 1945 - 1966, Gregory J. Schloesser

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

At the height of nuclear tension, governments at all levels took steps to both educate and protect their citizens. Plans that included mass evacuations and shelters were put forth to protect the public and prepare for the seemingly inevitable war with the Soviet Union. These efforts faced tremendous obstacles, including a persistent sense of apathy amongst the public. Many authors insist that life under the persistent threat of a nuclear holocaust had a profound effect on the American psyche. The main thesis of this paper argues that while people were undoubtedly aware of the potential danger, those greatly affected and …

"Much Depends On Local Customs:"The Wpa's New Deal For New Orleans, 1935-1940, William A. Sorum

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Works Progress Administration came to New Orleans in 1935, a time of economic uncertainty and even fear. The implementation of the relief embodied in the WPA was influenced by local factors that reinforced the existing social order at first but that left a framework through which that order could be challenged. The business of providing WPA relief also was attended by scandal and criticism. In spite of these inherent weaknesses and certain incident, the WPA left behind an enviable physical legacy that is used and enjoyed today by the citizens of New Orleans. This paper explores the roots of …

Object Detection And Tracking Using Uncalibrated Cameras, Ashwini Amara May 2010

Object Detection And Tracking Using Uncalibrated Cameras, Ashwini Amara

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis considers the problem of tracking an object in world coordinates using measurements obtained from multiple uncalibrated cameras. A general approach to track the location of a target involves different phases including calibrating the camera, detecting the object's feature points over frames, tracking the object over frames and analyzing object's motion and behavior. The approach contains two stages. First, the problem of camera calibration using a calibration object is studied. This approach retrieves the camera parameters from the known locations of ground data in 3D and their corresponding image coordinates. The next important part of this work is to …
