Identification And Explanation Of Regional Development Poles In Haiti, Carline Noailles
Identification And Explanation Of Regional Development Poles In Haiti, Carline Noailles
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The concentration of the population and socioeconomic activities in the Metropolitan Area of Port au Prince (MAPAP) in Haiti has a negative impact within MAPAP and on the socioeconomic development of the entire country. This phenomenon, known as urban primacy, is increasing at an unprecedented rate in developing countries. Urban primacy in the Third World is explained by scholars studying the phenomenon and by dependency theorists. Economic decentralization, based on growth pole theory, is one of the most frequently used policies for slowing the growth of primate cities by focusing on development poles. In Haiti, the potential growth poles are …

Numerical Simulation Of Unsteady Hydrodynamics In The Lower Mississippi River, Mallory Davis
Numerical Simulation Of Unsteady Hydrodynamics In The Lower Mississippi River, Mallory Davis
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Alterations along the Mississippi River, such as dams and levees, have greatly reduced the amount of freshwater and sediment that reaches the Louisiana coastal area. Several freshwater and sediment diversions have been proposed to combat the associated land loss problem. To aid in this restoration effort a 1-D numerical model was calibrated, validated, and used to predict the response of the river to certain stimuli, such as proposed diversions, channel closures, channel modifications, and relative sea level rise. This study utilized HEC-RAS 4.0, a 1-D mobile-bed numerical model, which was calibrated using a discharge hydrograph at Tarbert Landing and a …

Sedimentology Of A Lower Middle Pleistocene Reservoir In Garden Banks Area, Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Integration Of 3d Seismic, Cores, And Well Logs, Sean P. O'Brien
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Garden Banks field 236, known as Pimento, is part of a lower middle Pleistocene submarine-fan deposit in the north central Gulf of Mexico. Pimento field represents a classic example of a prograding fan across the continental shelf continuing across the continental slope filling and spilling minibasins. Channel complexes cut through the field as sediment migrated across the shelf and slope to the basin floor. This thesis consists of two papers which utilized donated 3D seismic data on six of the blocks in Pimento field. Public domain data was incorporated with these data to explore the producing reservoir sand in the …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Through partnerships and collaborations with universities, non-profits, local government, and private foundations, neighborhood associations and residents have been using Public Participation Geographic Information Systems (PPGIS) as a tool for neighborhood recovery in post-Katrina and Rita New Orleans. The landfall of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita along the Gulf Coast Region changed the way that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used for Emergency Management and Response, PPGIS, and community recovery. This research explores GIS and PPGIS best practices through an evaluation of New Orleans, LA case studies and seeks to present solutions for the development of a post-disaster PPGIS for community recovery.
Measuring Empowerment And Social Inclusion In Favela Upgrading Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Kathryn Lacy
Measuring Empowerment And Social Inclusion In Favela Upgrading Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Kathryn Lacy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Inter American Development Bank describes Brazil's orçamento participativo (OP) or participatory budgeting process as "an instrument of empowerment and social inclusion" implemented by the Worker's Party to foster the "efficient and democratic allocation of resources and citizen involvement in the planning and management of their localities" (Serageldin, 2005: 4). Although the Inter American Development Bank refers to the OP as an empowering process it provides no formal framework for measuring the level of empowerment experienced by the participants. Three factors are necessary for social inclusion and empowerment; 1) spatial integration, 2) decision making power and 3) the creation of …

Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach To Melancholy In As You Like It And Hamlet, Angela Brown
Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach To Melancholy In As You Like It And Hamlet, Angela Brown
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Ecocriticism explores the way in which artists interact with, interpret and represent the natural world. The concept of “nature,†according to ecocriticism, goes beyond simply flora and fauna, extending to human nature as well. In Shakespeare's England, a person's nature was determined by his bodily humors, so the melancholy humor particularly lends itself to an ecocritical approach because it is inextricably linked to the natural world. Transcending genre, melancholy is not limited to the green world of comedy but rather appears in tragedy as well. In As You Like It, the melancholy Jaques offers a foil for the forest teeming …
Emotion Socialization, Emotional Competence, And Social Competence And Maladjustment In Early Childhood, Scott Paul Mirabile
Emotion Socialization, Emotional Competence, And Social Competence And Maladjustment In Early Childhood, Scott Paul Mirabile
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this study of preschool children and parents (N=64), we examined relations between two facets of parents' emotion socialization: direct and indirect socialization; three facets of children's emotional competence: emotion expression, regulation, and understanding; and their relations with children's social and emotional adjustment. Few associations were observed between indicators of parents' emotion socialization and among indicators of children's emotional competence, suggesting that these constructs are better understood as multi-faceted, rather than unitary processes. Additionally, aspects of children's emotional competence linked--both directly and indirectly--parents' emotion socialization behaviors and children's social and emotional adjustment. Results are discussed with regard to the role …

"I Have Told You About The Cane And Garden": White Women, Cultivation, And Southern Society In Central Louisiana, 1852-1874, Erin Swindler
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines cultivation in the lives of Sarah and Columbia Bennett between the years 1852 and 1874. The Bennett women's letters convey an intimate sense of the agro-economic preoccupations (and gardening pleasures) of these slave-owning white women, and the centrality of cultivation in mid-nineteenth-century rural Louisiana within a landscape of country stores, plantations, and people. As the lives of the Bennett women illustrate, white women's gardening knowledge and practice formed a cornerstone of central Louisiana society. The Bennett women's gardening knowledge and skill were primary components in the creation of a self-sustaining plantation household. By cultivating produce and other …
Adolescent Transformation In The Short Stories Of Carson Mccullers, Ashley-Ann Dorn Woods
Adolescent Transformation In The Short Stories Of Carson Mccullers, Ashley-Ann Dorn Woods
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Carson McCullers's neglected short stories "Sucker", "Like That", and "The Haunted Boy" depict stark adolescent crises. Her character analyses dramatize important elements of many theories of adolescent psychology. Each of these stories depicts what happens when something goes horribly wrong in the course of an already difficult stage of life. In "Sucker" two different stages of adolescent development collide. Pete and Sucker go through different psychological adjustments. The two boys discover the difficulties of adolescent romance, hero-worship, peer group formation and exclusion, and power reversal. The narrator in "Like That" struggles with her Peter-Pan complex as she witnesses her sister …
How New Markets Tax Credits Are Contributing To Recovery And Community Development In New Orleans, Rebecca Houtman
How New Markets Tax Credits Are Contributing To Recovery And Community Development In New Orleans, Rebecca Houtman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) program was created in 2000 to incentivize commercial investment in low-income communities that have traditionally lacked access to capital. In addition to its use to foster community development, after Hurricane Katrina it was put to use as a disaster recovery resource as part of the Gulf Opportunity Zone Act. The program has successfully attracted investors, but gauging the community impact of NMTC projects is difficult to assess because of the diversity of allowable project types and their wide dispersion across the country. New Orleans affords a unique opportunity to examine how NMTCs have contributed …

The Effectiveness Of Literacy Coaches As Perceived By School Administrators, Classroom Teachers, And Literacy Coaches, Celeste C. Dugan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
School districts are hiring literacy coaches to provide professional development and followup support for teachers as a means to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement in reading. A paucity of research exists reflecting a clear analysis of the factors which can be used to determine the effectiveness of a coach. According to a survey conducted by Roller (2006), few districts follow standards developed by the International Reading Association (2003) related to qualifications and experience. This lack of consistency in the training required could influence the effectiveness of the coach. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of …

Hidden Markov Model With Binned Duration And Its Application, Zuliang Jiang
Hidden Markov Model With Binned Duration And Its Application, Zuliang Jiang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Hidden Markov models (HMM) have been widely used in various applications such as speech processing and bioinformatics. However, the standard hidden Markov model requires state occupancy durations to be geometrically distributed, which can be inappropriate in some real-world applications where the distributions on state intervals deviate signi cantly from the geometric distribution, such as multi-modal distributions and heavy-tailed distributions. The hidden Markov model with duration (HMMD) avoids this limitation by explicitly incor- porating the appropriate state duration distribution, at the price of signi cant computational expense. As a result, the applications of HMMD are still quited limited. In this work, …

Market Reaction To The Class Action Fairness Act Of 2005, Shael Nathan Wolfson
Market Reaction To The Class Action Fairness Act Of 2005, Shael Nathan Wolfson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (CAFA) was signed into law on February 18, 2005. Prior to CAFA, plaintiffs found it easier for class action lawsuits to be tried in their preferred venue—state courts. Changes introduced by CAFA practically removed the majority of class action jurisdiction from state to federal courts. Since law and regulation might serve as an external corporate governance mechanism, an interesting question is whether CAFA has strengthened or weakened corporate governance. If CAFA improves corporate governance, associated marginal benefits would outweigh marginal costs. The opposite would be true if CAFA weakens corporate governance. This issue …

Disrupting The Impact Of Socio-Contextual Disadvantage On School Readiness Skill Attainment Among Preschool Children: The Role Of Head Start Attendance, Kristin Leigh Callahan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Created in 1965, Head Start is the longest running national school readiness program in the United States. Head Start was developed to improve children's social and academic readiness for kindergarten and to reduce the academic achievement gap between impoverished and more affluent children. However, questions about the effectiveness of Head Start have trouble the program since its inception. Head Start children often experience considerably more sociocontextual risk, specifically in the form of more economic disadvantage, maternal psychological distress, and dangerous neighborhoods. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the extent to which attending Head Start buffers children from …

Cognitive Biases In Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Do Interpretive And Judgment Biases Distinguish Anxious Youth From Their Non-Anxious Peers?, Melinda Cannon
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine cognitive biases in clinically anxious children compared to normal children and to determine if cognitive biases could discriminate anxious youth from non-anxious youth. Two specific cognitive biases were the focus of the present study—interpretive biases (i.e., the tendency to interpret neutral stimuli in a negative way) and judgment biases (i.e., a lowered estimate of one's ability to cope with a threatening situation). Twenty-four youth comprised the anxiety disordered sample and were each matched to two normal youth on four demographic variables (gender, age, ethnicity, and family income level), thus the matched comparison …

A Personal Counseling Experience For Master's Level Counseling Students: Practices And Perceptions Of Counselor Education Program Directors, Kristen Unkauf
A Personal Counseling Experience For Master's Level Counseling Students: Practices And Perceptions Of Counselor Education Program Directors, Kristen Unkauf
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
There exists a strong endorsement in the literature of the effectiveness of an individual counseling experience as an influence in the personal and professional development of counseling students, yet few counselor education programs seem to require that students complete such an experience. Thus, the question arises as to why the required individual counseling experience as a client is not being required by a large proportion of counseling programs. The purposes of this descriptive, exploratory study were to determine the prevalence of the required experience as a client in individual counseling, examine the opinions of counselor education program leaders regarding the …
Representative Environments For Reduced Estimation Time Of Wide Area Acoustic Performance, Josette Fabre
Representative Environments For Reduced Estimation Time Of Wide Area Acoustic Performance, Josette Fabre
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Advances in ocean modeling (Barron et al., 2006) have improved such that ocean forecasts and even ensembles (e.g., Coelho et al., 2009) representing ocean uncertainty are becoming more widely available. This facilitates nowcasts (current time ocean fields / analyses) and forecasts (predicted ocean fields) of acoustic propagation conditions in the ocean which can greatly improve the planning of acoustic experiments. Modeling of acoustic transmission loss (TL) provides information about how the environment impacts acoustic performance for various systems and system configurations of interest. It is, however, very time consuming to compute acoustic propagation to and from many potential source and …

George Eliot's Middlemarch: The Making Of A Modern Marriage, Katherine Marie Kelly
George Eliot's Middlemarch: The Making Of A Modern Marriage, Katherine Marie Kelly
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I examine the evolving social and personal attitudes about marriage and love as depicted in George Eliot's Middlemarch by arguing that Eliot anticipates modern marriages by critiquing traditional Victorian marital values. For the purposes of this analysis, the applicable aspects of modern marriage are sexuality, shifting gender roles, and a dismissal of social class as the major factor in choosing a partner. In order to achieve this end, I apply close textual analysis as well as a New Historical approach to examine how Middlemarch is conditioned by its historical context.
