Importance Of Medieval Numerology And The Effects Upon Meaning In The Works Of The Gawain-Poet, Alessandra Cusimano
Importance Of Medieval Numerology And The Effects Upon Meaning In The Works Of The Gawain-Poet, Alessandra Cusimano
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
An examination of the influence of medieval numerology and number theory upon the works of the Gawain poet, this essay seeks to connect the importance of numbers to the construction of the four poems. By examining such number theories as the Divine Proportion and marriage numbers, as well as Pythagorean number concepts of masculine and feminine numbers, a clear connection between the literature and the number can be found. The poet not only seeks to use numbers to impart important Christian doctrine to his readers in a subconscious way, he also demonstrates an extreme pre-planning of every line and layout …
Use Of Environmental Variables To Infer Gene Flow And Population Structure In The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) And Predict The Seroprevalence Of An Emerging Infectious Disease, Rachel Wallace Clostio
Use Of Environmental Variables To Infer Gene Flow And Population Structure In The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) And Predict The Seroprevalence Of An Emerging Infectious Disease, Rachel Wallace Clostio
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Understanding worldwide declines in reptiles due to factors such as habitat loss and emerging infectious disease has become an increasingly important focus in conservation biology. Here, I use novel approaches from the field of landscape genetics to combine spatial genetic data with landscape data at both regional and local spatial scales to explore natural and anthropogenic landscape features that shape population structure and gene flow in a federally threatened reptile, Gopherus polyphemus. I also utilize approaches from the field of spatial epidemiology to examine the extent to which environmental variables can be used to predict the seroprevalence of an associated …

Lumensecity: Objects Illuminated In Time, Kourtney Keller
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the evolution of my work in graduate school. Upon entering into this course of study my artistic expression was polarized into realms of 2 and 3-Dimensional tactile works and experiments in 4-Dimensions (time) in the form of animations and short films. The content and context of these works have interwoven but their presentations remained polarized. In my masterʼs studies I have attempted to synergize the mediums of my artworks in order to achieve more realized and formal presentations. Following this course, I hope for my work to further evolve.
Dynamic Behavioral Analysis Of Malicious Software With Norman Sandbox, Danielle Shoemake
Dynamic Behavioral Analysis Of Malicious Software With Norman Sandbox, Danielle Shoemake
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Current signature-based Anti-Virus (AV) detection approaches take, on average, two weeks from discovery to definition update release to AV users. In addition, these signatures get stale quickly: AV products miss between 25%-80% of new malicious software within a week of not updating. This thesis researches and develops a detection/classification mechanism for malicious software through statistical analysis of dynamic malware behavior. Several characteristics for each behavior type were stored and analyzed such as function DLL names, function parameters, exception thread ids, exception opcodes, pages accessed during faults, port numbers, connection types, and IP addresses. Behavioral data was collected via Norman Sandbox …
Hell On Earth: A Modern Day Inferno In Cormac Mccarthy's The Road, Emily Lane
Hell On Earth: A Modern Day Inferno In Cormac Mccarthy's The Road, Emily Lane
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Cormac McCarthy's The Road and Dante's the Inferno contain textual and thematic comparisons. While the Inferno creates a world that exhibits the worst fears of the medieval Catholic subconscious of Dante's time, The Road paints a world of the darkest fears of the current American subconscious. Both texts reflect a critical dystopia that speculates on human spirituality and offers a critique of society through a tour of sin and suffering in a desolate setting.
"The Conceit Of This Inconstant Stay": Shakespeare's Philosophical Conquest Of Time Through Personification, Triche Roberson
"The Conceit Of This Inconstant Stay": Shakespeare's Philosophical Conquest Of Time Through Personification, Triche Roberson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the procreation sonnets and those numerous sonnets that promise immortality through verse for Shakespeare's beloved young man, the poet personifies time as an agent of relentlessly destructive change. Yet Shakespeare's approach to the personification of time, as well as his reactions to time, changes over the course of the sequence. He transforms his fear of and obsession with time as a destroyer typical of most sonnets to an attitude of mastery over the once ominous force. The act of contemplating time's power by personification provides the speaker with a deeper awareness of time, love, and mutability that allows him …

Soil Buoyancy As A Potential Indicator Of Hurricane Susceptibility In Louisiana Marshes, Alissa Gros
Soil Buoyancy As A Potential Indicator Of Hurricane Susceptibility In Louisiana Marshes, Alissa Gros
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Hurricanes rapidly destroy large expanses land in coastal Louisiana marsh. Research shows that freshwater marsh with organic soils experience increased destruction during hurricanes compared to other marsh. A relevant question surfaces, do some restoration projects create marsh similar to marshes that are more susceptible to hurricane damage. This study analyzes soil, bulk density, plant composition, and buoyancy of restoration projects and sites adjacent to those that experienced land loss during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Results indicate that high organic matter percentages in marsh soil increases hurricane susceptibility attributed to decreased bulk density and increased buoyancy. Buoyancy is episodic and is …
The Mythic Conquest Of Time In Faulkner's Fiction, William M. David
The Mythic Conquest Of Time In Faulkner's Fiction, William M. David
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
William Faulkner is famous for stating he agrees with Henri Bergson's optimistic philosophy of time, a philosophy that emphasizes human freedom and action precisely as they relate to time. However, many of Faulkner's characters are defined by their stagnant and lethargic personalities which cannot change; these characters are held immobile by an over – identification with the rich history of their mythic, southern past. This paper, through in depth explorations of Faulkner's masterpieces, Absalom, Absalom! and The Sound and The Fury seeks to consider human mythmaking as the key to understanding Faulkner's difficult works. This critical approach allows us to …

Biopsychosocial Factors In Chronic Spine-Related Pain: Contributions To Pain Intensity And Perceived Disability, Jonathan S. Ord
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Psychological and contextual factors play an important role in the development and maintenance of chronic spine-related pain, and effective treatment of pain-related conditions requires an understanding of how these factors contribute to pain and disability. The present study examined the relative contributions of spine pathology, psychological complications, and demographic factors to perceived pain intensity and disability in patients with chronic spine-related pain. Because most patients were assessed in the context of a compensable injury, exaggeration of symptoms and disability was systematically controlled for using multiple validity indicators. A high prevalence of psychological complications was observed in the present sample. Analysis …

Fault Detection For Systems With Multiple Unknown Modes And Similar Units, Anwer Bashi
Fault Detection For Systems With Multiple Unknown Modes And Similar Units, Anwer Bashi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation considers fault detection for large-scale practical systems with many nearly identical units operating in a shared environment. A special class of hybrid system model is introduced to describe such multi-unit systems, and a general approach for estimation and change detection is proposed. A novel fault detection algorithm is developed based on estimating a common Gaussian-mixture distribution for unit parameters whereby observations are mapped into a common parameter-space and clusters are then identified corresponding to different modes of operation via the Expectation- Maximization algorithm. The estimated common distribution incorporates and generalizes information from all units and is utilized for …
Time-Lapse Depletion Modeling Sensitivity Study: Gas-Filled Gulf Of Mexico Reservoir, Christy Gautre
Time-Lapse Depletion Modeling Sensitivity Study: Gas-Filled Gulf Of Mexico Reservoir, Christy Gautre
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Time-lapse seismic allows oil/gas reservoir monitoring during production, highlighting compaction and water movement. Time-lapse modeling, using a stress-dependent rock physics model, helps determine the need and frequency of expensive repeat seismic acquisition. We simulate a Gulf of Mexico gas reservoir time-lapse response for depletion and water flooding using uncertainty ranges in water saturation, porosity, stress-induced velocity changes, and pore compressibility. An analysis is conducted to see if a water-swept region could have been predicted. Findings show the swept and un-swept monitor cases amplitude differences range from 6% to 15%, which is higher than the actual monitor seismic noise level. Thus, …

Design, Synthesis And Characterization Of D-Glucosamine Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Bhargiv Parikh
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) have gained much attention over the last few decades, because of their ability to form supramolecular architectures as well as their many potential applications in biomedical research and as advanced materials. Most of the gelators were discovered through serendipity, and their structural requirements are somewhat ambiguous. This is due, in part, to the fact that the supramolecular gelation phenomenon is not yet fully understood, though many structural classes have been found to be excellent organogelators. Carbohydrates are abundant natural resources that are useful in preparing advanced materials. We have previously showed that monosaccharide derivatives can …

Cell Wall/Surface Proteome Of Candida Albicans: Its Application In Rapid Identification Of Yeast Species By Mass Signature And Characterization By In Vitro And In Vivo Chemical Labelings, Jiang Qian
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that may cause mucutaneous infection and/or disseminated candidasis if the host defense system is impaired (such as those in HIV patients). Cell surface of C. albicans is the frontier where initial interplay between host-pathogen takes place and therefore is of great importance in understanding the mechanism of hostpathogen interaction. MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of intact fungal cells yielded mass signatures for rapid species differentiation, strain grouping and yeast morphogenesis monitoring. Cell surface biotinylations at low temperature (4°C), enzymatic digestion of the intact fungal cell surface proteins ("whole cell shaving"), biotin-avidin affinity enrichment of biotinylated peptides, …

Do Objective Measures Reduce The Disproportionate Rates Of Minority Youth Placed In Detention: Validation Of A Risk Assessment Instrument?, Tiffany Simpson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The overrepresentation of youth of color in the juvenile justice system, often referred to as disproportionate minority contact (DMC) can be found at many stages of the juvenile justice continuum. Further, research has shown that overrepresentation is not necessarily related to higher rates of criminal activity and suggests that case processing disparities can contribute to DMC. Risk assessment instruments (RAI) are objective techniques used to make decisions about youth in the juvenile justice system. This study examined the effects of implementing an RAI designed to make detention decisions, in a predominantly rural parish in Louisiana. Police officers from three law …
The New Voseo Culto: An Exploration Of The Complexity Of Familiar Address In Chilean Spanish, Patrick Roy Rouse
The New Voseo Culto: An Exploration Of The Complexity Of Familiar Address In Chilean Spanish, Patrick Roy Rouse
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In Chilean Spanish, second-person address is non-uniform in that the vos competes with the conventional tuteo and a third, mixed form has emerged. To add to this complexity, the form speakers choose has been shown to correspond to socioeconomic strata. Upper classes use tú, lower classes use vos, and young, middle class speakers choose the mixed form in which the verb is conjugated according to the voseo and is used with the pronoun tú. The causes and effects of this second-person schism in Chile are explored here, as well as the resulting sociolinguistic issues and consequences. In a study of …
