Posters, Politics And Immigration During The May 1968 Protests In France, Sara Mcnamara Dec 2010

Posters, Politics And Immigration During The May 1968 Protests In France, Sara Mcnamara

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

How were immigrants, immigrant issues and their histories represented through radical poster art created during the 1968 protests and strikes in France? The May 1968 protests remain one of the most significant moments in contemporary French history and it occurred during a time when immigrant populations were rapidly increasing. There is a multitude of research, analysis and reflections on the protests and strikes; yet there is very little mention of the place of immigrants during this event. Art collectives that were created during the protests designed and produced posters that later became a symbol of the strike. By using a …

The Use Of Experiential Groups In The Training Of Group Workers: Student Attitudes And Instructor Participation, Pierre Betsy St. Pierre Dec 2010

The Use Of Experiential Groups In The Training Of Group Workers: Student Attitudes And Instructor Participation, Pierre Betsy St. Pierre

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Both the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW) require counselor education programs to provide experiential training to group workers (CACREP, 2009; ASGW, 2000). However, no specific models are given to counselor educators to implement the experiential component. Only two research studies have examined the overall structure and type of instructor involvement commonly used in counselor training programs (Anderson & Price, 2001; Merta, Wolfgang, & McNeil, 1993). In addition, researchers have documented ethical concerns in the use of experiential training methods (Davenport, 2004; Furr & Barret, 2000; Riva …

Alternative Literacies, Resistance, And Spatial Representations In The Do-It-Yourself (Diy) Culture Of Zine Publication In New Orleans, Nathan Jessee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Zines are small circulation media that amateurs make and distribute. Inspired by both the lack of ethnographic research on the do-it-yourself (DIY) culture of zine-making in urban studies and the growing interest in ethnographically oriented research in literacy studies, rhetoric, and linguistics this research explores the people, places, and practices behind zine publication in New Orleans, Louisiana through participant observation at two specialized loci—the Iron Rail and punk shows—as well as semi-structured interviews with people who make, distribute, and consume zines. This research argues that zine-makers use zines to reinterpret urban space in search of an authentic relationship with the …

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Thermal-Flow Characteristics Of Gas Turbine Reverse-Flow Combustor, Liang Wang Aug 2010

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of Thermal-Flow Characteristics Of Gas Turbine Reverse-Flow Combustor, Liang Wang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Reverse-flow combustors have been used in heavy land-based gas turbines for many decades. A sheath is typically installed to provide cooling at an expense of large pressure losses, through small jet impingement cooling and strong forced convention channel flow. With the modern advancement in metallurgy and thermal-barrier coating technologies, it may become possible to remove this sheath to recover the pressure losses without melting the combustor chamber. However, without the sheath, the flow inside the dump diffuser may exert nonuniform cooling on the combustion chamber. Therefore, the objective of this project is to investigate the flow pattern, pressure drop, and …

Investigation Of Neotectonic Activity Within The Shallow, Unconsolidated Stratigraphy Of The Pearl River Delta Area, Louisiana, Dane Fischer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

During the last half century researchers have suggested that active deformation driven by neotectonic activity has locally influenced areas of southeastern Louisiana in the form of wetland loss and coastal erosion. This study, within the Pearl River Delta Area of Louisiana, applied geomorphologic and stratigraphic methods of analysis to assess whether evidence of recent fault motion is present within the shallow, unconsolidated Holocene strata of the study area. Geomorphological historical change analyses focused on meander patterns, elongated water bodies and spatial changes in vegetation identify areas where fault motion may have recently occurred. The shallow stratigraphy was then investigated in …

School Choice: The Black Middle-Class Dilemma, Alan Delery Aug 2010

School Choice: The Black Middle-Class Dilemma, Alan Delery

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This case study assesses the elementary school choice decision-making process of black middle-class families living in the Algiers community of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. The concept of community has been central to the success of blacks in America since Reconstruction. However, as the Civil Rights Movement helped eliminate some of the legal obstacles facing blacks and provided them with more access to opportunities, it also had the unfortunate consequence of redirecting the attention of blacks more inwardly to the success of their own families, thus diminishing some of the formerly needed sense of community responsibility. These families are not …

The Interaction Of Pain And Morphine On Analgesia, Locomotion, And Cognitive Functioning, Brandon Baiamonte Aug 2010

The Interaction Of Pain And Morphine On Analgesia, Locomotion, And Cognitive Functioning, Brandon Baiamonte

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Opioid medications are medicine's best weapon against severe intractable pain, but prolonged use of these medications can be complicated by side effects like tolerance and mental clouding which, themselves, can be disabling. The present study examined the independent and combined effects of inflammatory pain and opioid medication on spatial memory for a well learned task in Sprague-Dawley rats. The Hargreaves method was used to verify the pain state of the animals after complete Freund's adjuvant injection and morphine treatment. Whereas pain had little effect on spatial memory, morphine had profound detrimental effects that persisted beyond the analgesic effectiveness of the …

Accuracy of the numerical method is verified through comparison with analytically known results and the ability of the numerical simulation to predict the thrust and torque on a propeller in open water is assessed through comparison with published experimental results. The thrust and torque results for the …

Application Of Dirichlet Distribution For Polytopic Model Estimation, Jaipal Katkuri Aug 2010

Application Of Dirichlet Distribution For Polytopic Model Estimation, Jaipal Katkuri

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The polytopic model (PM) structure is often used in the areas of automatic control and fault detection and isolation (FDI). It is an alternative to the multiple model approach which explicitly allows for interpolation among local models. This thesis proposes a novel approach to PM estimation by modeling the set of PM weights as a random vector with Dirichlet Distribution (DD). A new approximate (adaptive) PM estimator, referred to as a Quasi-Bayesian Adaptive Kalman Filter (QBAKF) is derived and implemented. The model weights and state estimation in the QBAKF is performed adaptively by a simple QB weights' estimator and a …

The Role Of American Elites In The New Courthouse Building Project: Progressive-Era Ideologies In The Vieux Carre, Kelly Cottrell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

At the turn of the twentieth century, City Beautiful principles manifested themselves in the historic core of New Orleans: the Vieux Carre. City and state officials determined that the Cabildo and Presbytere were no longer suitable sites for the Louisiana Supreme Courts, and set about erecting a monumental, Beaux Arts-style courthouse amid the dense, vernacular built environment of the French Quarter. Two hundred fifty-one individuals were displaced as a result of the expropriation and demolition of forty-one structures occupying the square bounded Royal, Chartres, Conti and St. Louis streets. While significant scholarly research has interpreted the motives and visions of …

By testing a fiber beard, certain cotton fiber length parameters can be obtained rapidly. This is the method used by the High Volume Instrument (HVI). This study is aimed to explore the approaches and obtain the inference of length distributions of HVI beard sam- ples in order to develop new methods that can help us find the distribution of original fiber lengths and further improve HVI length measurements. At first, the mathematical functions were searched for describing three different types of length distributions related to the beard method as used in HVI: cotton fiber lengths of the original fiber population …

Toward A Theory Of Female Subjectivity, Dimitra Cupo Aug 2010

Toward A Theory Of Female Subjectivity, Dimitra Cupo

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Poststructuralist accounts of gender provide a useful theoretical space to unpack the workings of power and domination as they structure the organization of our language, representations, concepts, and discourse in general. One significant flaw of this theory is a failure to adequately account for the social realm of embodied individuals, social interactions, and interpretive moments. In this paper, I offer conventional femininity as a particular type of gendered habitus that highlights this theoretical flaw as it necessarily links what is promising and useful about poststructuralist accounts of gender with the physical, social, interactive, and interpretive everyday lives of women.

Late Quaternary Mississippi River Incised Valley Fill: Transgressive Depositional Packages, Scott Wessels Aug 2010

Late Quaternary Mississippi River Incised Valley Fill: Transgressive Depositional Packages, Scott Wessels

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A series of USACE atlas quadrangles and dee pborings from the USGS and LGS with radiocarbon dated peats were used to construct several regional crosssections and paleogeographic reconstructions. Late Pleistocene glaciation and consequent lowered sea leve lresulted in reentrenchment of the Mississippi River incised valley. Meltwater floods from proglacial lakes incised into older deposits followed by braided fluvial (substratum) aggradation due to reduced carrying capacity after floods followed by meandering fluvial(topstratum aggradation as fluvial gradients and discharge decreased. Rapidly rising sea level prevented development of shelf phase deltas prior to~10ka. Attenuated rates of sea level rise and periodic avulsions led …

Gender Inequality And Terrorism: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Socioeconomic Gender Inequality On Terrorism, Jennifer Dumas Aug 2010

Gender Inequality And Terrorism: An Analysis Of The Effects Of Socioeconomic Gender Inequality On Terrorism, Jennifer Dumas

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Studies of terrorism have explored a number of factors thought to drive the phenomenon. Authors often tie socioeconomic development to reducing terrorism. Among structural explanations of terrorism, however, authors generally neglect the effect of gender inequality, though studies show that gender inequality increases the risk of international and civil conflict. Therefore I explore the impact of gender inequality in important socioeconomic issues on terrorism for 143 countries from 1998-2009. I argue that socioeconomic gender inequality reflects poor state capacity, resulting in grievances that contribute to domestic non-suicide and suicide terrorism. I study gender inequality in the areas of education, labor …

On Dimensionality Reduction Of Data, Harika Rao Vamulapalli Aug 2010

On Dimensionality Reduction Of Data, Harika Rao Vamulapalli

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Random projection method is one of the important tools for the dimensionality reduction of data which can be made efficient with strong error guarantees. In this thesis, we focus on linear transforms of high dimensional data to the low dimensional space satisfying the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma. In addition, we also prove some theoretical results relating to the projections that are of interest when applying them in practical applications. We show how the technique can be applied to synthetic data with probabilistic guarantee on the pairwise distance. The connection between dimensionality reduction and compressed sensing is also discussed.
