Differential Sedimentation In A Mississippi River Crevasse Splay, Christopher Esposito
Differential Sedimentation In A Mississippi River Crevasse Splay, Christopher Esposito
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this study the patterns of sediment transport and deposition in the channels and receiving basin of a crevasse splay in the modern Mississippi River delta are examined, with emphasis on the development of a distributary mouth bar. Simultaneous hydroacoustic and optical measurements on the mouth bar show that the bar conforms to the progradational stage of an existing conceptual model of mouth bar development. This is confirmed by cores dated using Beryllium-7, which provides a record of the deposition on the bar over a 90-day period. Stratigraphic data from cores obtained on the bar are used to extend the …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an exploration of the work I have completed during graduate study at UNO. My time has been spent investigating concepts of evaluation and the attribution of meaning. The main thrust and impetus of my art has been to explore the subjective way people interpret visual language and how that interpretation can be manipulated and undermined. By undoing these associations I hope to reveal the tentative nature of meaning.
Training In The Historic Building Trades Of New Orleans: An Inventory And Analysis, Nyssa Hackett
Training In The Historic Building Trades Of New Orleans: An Inventory And Analysis, Nyssa Hackett
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The unique cultural techniques of the historic building trades of New Orleans are currently at risk of being lost due to a lack of new master craftsmen and the demise of the current generation of master craftsmen. The purpose of this study is twofold: to analyze the historic transmission of the trades in New Orleans through the lens of workforce development and to inventory and analyze current programs that teach the trades. Analysis of historic training in the trades and best practices in workforce development inform an assessment of the strengths of current programs and their ability to enhance the …
Shadow Of A Memory, Julie Lynn Hindman
Shadow Of A Memory, Julie Lynn Hindman
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
I have gained control over a whole space through the use of video projections, soundscaping and various other materials including some interactive media, enabling me to give the audience a fuller sensual experience. Multiâ€media has made it possible for artists such as myself to create artworks that require more than a visual conversation with the viewer. The manipulation of memory by time became a physical manifestation in the environments that I create with the use of multiâ€media installations.
Macroeconomic Indicators Of Working Class Voter Abstention In Us Presidential Elections, 1948-2004, Christopher Kessing
Macroeconomic Indicators Of Working Class Voter Abstention In Us Presidential Elections, 1948-2004, Christopher Kessing
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper I explore the causal relationship between the strategic economic interdependence advanced by Western democracies after WWII and the "puzzle of participation" in US presidential elections. More specifically, I seek to illustrate first how economic convergence within the West and then the transition from Keynesian to monetarist policy rhetoric reflexively diminish the degree to which US working class voters can realistically petition their elected officials regarding the most salient matters of economic self-interest. My results indicate that from 1948-2004, the working public became more isolated from their most salient economic decisions, voted less often due to heretofore unexplored …
Parents And Peers As Restrictors Of Opportunities: A Test Of The General Theory Of Crime, Emily Kuhn
Parents And Peers As Restrictors Of Opportunities: A Test Of The General Theory Of Crime, Emily Kuhn
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
According to the General Theory of Crime, lower self-control individuals with sufficient opportunities are most likely to engage in crime or analogous acts. This study tested three hypotheses drawn from the General Theory of Crime. Specifically, this study tested the low selfcontrol to rule-breaking behavior association, self-selection and tested restricted or enhanced opportunities as moderators of the low self-control and rule-breaking link. Early adolescents reported their self-control, unsupervised time, parental solicitation, rules, affiliation with antisocial peers and rule-breaking behavior. Parents reported their perceptions of adolescents' rule-breaking. Lower self-control was associated with more adolescent- but not parent-reported rule-breaking. Lower self-control was …

Border State, Divided Loyalties: The Politics Of Ellen Wallace, Kentucky Slave Owner, During The Civil War, Amber C. Nicholson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the diary of Ellen Wallace, a woman who lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, during the American Civil War. A diligent diarist, Ellen recorded not only the workings of her farm and household, but also her interactions with slaves, her worries about secession, and her shifting views on President Lincoln, emancipation and the war itself. At the start of the war, Ellen was a staunch Unionist. By war's end, she was a Confederate. This thesis will examine the factors that contributed to Ellen's changing political ideals and how she sought to reconcile her opposing beliefs. Ellen occupied a role …

Shifting Understandings Of Imperialism: A Collision Of Cultures In Starship Troopers And Ender's Game, Leon Perniciaro
Shifting Understandings Of Imperialism: A Collision Of Cultures In Starship Troopers And Ender's Game, Leon Perniciaro
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I consider how Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers (1959) and Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game (1985) allegorically treat U.S. Cold War fears of invasion by the Soviet Union. Given the texts' historical relationship to the Vietnam War and their use of very similar science fiction tropes (namely, invasion by communistic, insect-like aliens), I argue that Orson Scott Card reimagines the binary Cold War conflict, softening the rhetoric of Starship Troopers and allowing for a more qualified understanding of the relationship between the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. Through this analysis, I also consider how science fiction is a useful …
Optimization Of Financial Transmission Right Portfolios Using Risk-Reward Analysis Of Deregulated Power Systems, Aashay Nandedkar
Optimization Of Financial Transmission Right Portfolios Using Risk-Reward Analysis Of Deregulated Power Systems, Aashay Nandedkar
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Financial Transmission Rights (FTR) is an investment that protects the market customers from price uncertainty in the case of transmission line congestion. Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) allows bidding of FTR's on various transmission paths. This thesis investigates quantitative methods for portfolio optimization to produce a risk-minimum portfolio of FTR's to bid. A computer model based on Security-Constrained Unit Commitment Problem and Risk-Reward Analysis is developed to simulate various operating conditions of a power system and predict the variations of power flows and corresponding electricity prices. It offers guidelines about the bidding cost and the amount of megawatts to bid for …
"All Necessary Force": The Coast Guard And The Sinking Of The Rum Runner "I'M Alone" , Joseph Anthony Ricci
"All Necessary Force": The Coast Guard And The Sinking Of The Rum Runner "I'M Alone" , Joseph Anthony Ricci
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Passage of the Volstead Act in 1920 expanded the mission of the U.S. Coast Guard. Law enforcement directives required officers to use "all necessary force" should a liquor smuggling vessel refuse the order to stop. On March 22, 1929, the Coast Guard Cutter Dexter sank the Canadian-flagged rum runner I'm Alone in the Gulf of Mexico, triggering an international incident that centered on "hot pursuit" and treaty jurisdiction. International encounters occurred frequently during Prohibition. The I'm Alone incident was the first sinking of a foreign flagged vessel that cost the life of a foreign national. The I'm Alone affair reflected …

Repetition And The Power Of Simplicity, Peter Barnitz
Repetition And The Power Of Simplicity, Peter Barnitz
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
My art consists of the repetition of patterns, shapes, numbers, text, and found objects that communicate concepts in language, science, and math as art. My work addresses aesthetic and formal aspects of the art itself and embraces the process and experience of creating. I use repetition of lines and shapes to create a complex mass of infinite amounts of shapes, which create what I regard as a peaceful gathering of energy. These patterns can be freely interpreted as the co-dependency between everything in existence, which contributes to the changing balance of life. Similar to my patterns, my sculptures fuse several …
The Carnivalesque And The Grotesque In Elizabeth Bishop's Poetry, Renee Dombrowski
The Carnivalesque And The Grotesque In Elizabeth Bishop's Poetry, Renee Dombrowski
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) was a Pulitzer-prize winning American poet who did not produce much published work in her career. This was partly due to her low confidence, depression, alcoholism, and difficult personal life, but it was also due to her meticulousness as a poet. Colleagues and critics praised her strong description and mastery of technique, but criticized her early work as lacking depth. While appearing simple, her early works present complex themes of dualism and isolation. Using characteristics of the carnivalesque and the grotesque, her poetry explores these concepts and the need to cover them. This study's close analysis of …

A Geospatial Service Model And Catalog For Discovery And Orchestration, Elias Ioup
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research is to provide a supporting Web services architecture, consisting of a service model and catalog, to allow discovery and automatic orchestration of geospatial Web services. First, a methodology for supporting geospatial Web services with existing orchestration tools is presented. Geospatial services are automatically translated into SOAP/WSDL services by a portable service wrapper. Their data layers are exposed as atomic functions while WSDL extensions provide syntactic metadata. Compliant services are modeled using the descriptive logic capabilities of the Ontology Language for the Web (OWL). The resulting geospatial service model has a number of functions. It provides …
Madison, Hamilton, And Reagan: The Limits Of Executive Power In Foreign Policy And The Reagan Intervention In Nicaragua, Stefan Lallinger
Madison, Hamilton, And Reagan: The Limits Of Executive Power In Foreign Policy And The Reagan Intervention In Nicaragua, Stefan Lallinger
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The distribution of power between the executive branch and the legislative branch in the realm of foreign policy is a delicate balance and one that has been debated since the Founding Fathers met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787. The debate has gotten no less intense and no less crucial in the modern, nuclear age, and it remains unresolved. The Reagan administration's foray into Nicaragua during the 1980's and its confrontations with Congress during that time period illuminate the complexities of the power-sharing arrangement in foreign policy and offer the ideal case study of executive-legislative war power. The lessons …
One Time Password Scheme Via Secret Sharing Techniques, Christopher Miceli
One Time Password Scheme Via Secret Sharing Techniques, Christopher Miceli
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Many organizations today are seeking to improve security by implementing multi-factor authentication, i.e. authentication requiring more than one independent mechanism to prove one's identity. One-time passwords in the form of hardware tokens in combination with conventional passwords have emerged as the predominant means in high security environments to satisfy the independent identification criteria for strong authentication. However, current popular public one-time passwords solutions such as HOTP, mOTP, TOTP, and S/Key depend on the computational complexity of breaking encryption or hash functions for security. This thesis will present an efficient and information-theoretically secure one-time password system called Shamir-OTP that is based …
Private Information Retrieval In An Anonymous Peer-To-Peer Environment, Michael Miceli
Private Information Retrieval In An Anonymous Peer-To-Peer Environment, Michael Miceli
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Private Information Retrieval (PIR) protocols enable a client to access data from a server without revealing what data was accessed. The study of Computational Private Information Retrieval (CPIR) protocols, an area of PIR protocols focusing on computational security, has been a recently reinvigorated area of focus in the study of cryptography. However, CPIR protocols still have not been utilized in any practical applications. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the Melchor Gaborit CPIR protocol can be successfully utilized in a practical manner in an anonymous peer-to-peer environment.
The Journey To Manhood In Gaines' Bloodline, Shagun Rawat
The Journey To Manhood In Gaines' Bloodline, Shagun Rawat
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Ernest Gaines collection of five short stories Bloodline, (1968) depicts the effects of racism and its denigrating effects on the lives of the black men. Gaines use of animal imagery furthers the effects of racism on the psychology of the blacks. The resolution comes around in the form of a mentor who helps the protagonists to break through the debilitating mind-set and work towards a new self-identity no longer defined by the white man. Gaines articulates the effects of lack of maturity, responsibility and understanding on the lives of the protagonists, their families and the community as a whole. Gaines …
Spatial Mismatch For Low-Wage Workers In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Lauren Andrews
Spatial Mismatch For Low-Wage Workers In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Lauren Andrews
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The theme of this study is spatial mismatch, a concept that gave rise to an ever-expanding body of research concerned with how and why residential and employment distributions have shifted within cities and across metropolitan areas. The concept grew out of John F. Kain's research on how racial discrimination and segregation affects the spatial patterns of people/subgroups and jobs in the postwar American urban environment. Specifically, "Housing Segregation" posits that housing-market discrimination is at the root of increased unemployment among inner-city, nonwhite workers; concurrently, the pace and volume of decentralization (of residents and employment) from central-cities reinforces low-income, overwhelmingly African-American …
Dufilho, Grandchamps, Or Peyroux? The Development Of Professional Pharmacy In Colonial And Early National American Louisiana, Laurel A. Dorrance
Dufilho, Grandchamps, Or Peyroux? The Development Of Professional Pharmacy In Colonial And Early National American Louisiana, Laurel A. Dorrance
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper will examine the hidden history of the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum and investigate the claims regarding the first licensed pharmacist in the United States. Drawing from legislative, church, medical, legal and institutional records, this study argues that colonial control, such as regulations governing medical practice and licensing requirements, established by continental powers in their overseas colonies, tended to recreate traditions and laws found in the home countries. For instance, the more rigorous licensing requirements for medical professionals, as practiced in France and Spain, were also the custom in Louisiana. However, when Louisiana became part of the Unites States, …
Navigating Heroines Between Scylla And Charybdis: Austen's Narrators, Katherine Johnson
Navigating Heroines Between Scylla And Charybdis: Austen's Narrators, Katherine Johnson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Jane Austen champions practicality and compatibility versus purely romantic or mercenary sentiment in her novels, and through narrative techniques she preserves her heroines from imprudent marriages. Austen's heroines do not fall madly in love at first sight, but rather they acquiesce to marriage through reason and discernment. She endows her heroines with qualities that make them worthy of her interference in the marriage plot: intelligent although inexperienced, possessed of realistic expectations and sensibility and reason, and, importantly, financial instability. She carefully cultivates heroes worthy of her heroines through plot twists. However, to show her dissatisfaction with the limited roles available …
