Preliminary Assessment: Identification Of Chinese Drywall And Exposure To Particulate Matter And Metals During Cutting And Installation Of Drywall, Vandana Karap

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Drywall, a popular building material made of gypsum based plaster sandwiched between two thick sheets of paper is used for building interior walls, is speedier alternative to traditional plaster, decreasing time and labor for construction. Importance of drywall increased with the demand for drywall after nine hurricanes hit Florida in 2004-05 and widespread damage caused in the Gulf Coast after Katrina in 2005. This study has two parts. First part presents an analysis of metals like strontium for the identification of Chinese drywall, and a comparison of strontium concentrations of American drywall and Chinese drywall using XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) analysis …

The Cultural Adaptation Of Internet Dating: Attitudes Towards Online Relationship Formation, Corey T. Miller May 2011

The Cultural Adaptation Of Internet Dating: Attitudes Towards Online Relationship Formation, Corey T. Miller

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the social approval of internet dating through the ranking of vignette scenarios. The scenarios are manipulated by the conditions of face-to-face interaction, presence of mutual acquaintance, and use of internet technology. Measures of legitimacy, predicted longevity, and social perception test for changes in attitudes of the varied ways in which a hypothetical couple meets. One of seven randomly distributed scenarios was ranked by a total of 346 undergraduates to disentangle the above conditions and test for an effect on social approval. Situated in the framework of cultural adaptation, script theory and the saturated self, support is found …

Actionable Visualization Of Higher Dimensional Dynamical Processes, Sravan Kumar Pappu May 2011

Actionable Visualization Of Higher Dimensional Dynamical Processes, Sravan Kumar Pappu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing modern day's information systems that produce humongous multi-dimensional data in form of logs, traces or events that unfold over time can be tedious without adequate visualization, thereby, advocating the need for an intelligible visualization. This thesis researched and developed a visualization framework that represents multi-dimensional dynamic and temporal process data in a potentially intelligible and actionable form. A prototype showing four different views using notional malware data abstracted from Normal Sandbox behavioral traces were developed. In particular, the B-matrix view representing the DLL files used by the malware to attack a system. This representation is aimed at visualizing large …

An Enlarging Influence: Women Of New Orleans, Julia Ward Howe, And The Woman's Department At The Cotton Centennial Exposition, 1884-1885, Miki Pfeffer

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the first Woman's Department at a World's Fair in the Deep South. It documents conflicts and reconciliations and the reassessments that post-bellum women made during the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition in New Orleans, the region's foremost but atypical city. It traces local women's resistance to the appointment of northern abolitionist and suffragist, Julia Ward Howe, for this “New South” event of 1884-1885. It also notes their increasing receptivity to national causes that Susan B. Anthony, Frances E. Willard, and others brought to the South, sometimes for the first time. This dissertation assesses the historical forces …

Phases Of A Man Called 'Moon': Mayor Landrieu And Race Relations In New Orleans, 1960-1974, Frank L. Straughan Jr. May 2011

Phases Of A Man Called 'Moon': Mayor Landrieu And Race Relations In New Orleans, 1960-1974, Frank L. Straughan Jr.

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the political career of Maurice Edwin "Moon" Landrieu from his election to the Louisiana legislature in 1960 to the end of his first term as mayor of New Orleans in 1974. Landrieu was a white southern liberal who vigorously supported the agenda of the civil rights movement. He succeeded in building an unprecedented coalition between liberal, middle-class whites and a large segment of the black community. As the 1970s unfolded, however, he found his coalition increasingly threatened not just by disgruntled white conservatives, which might be expected, but also by angry black radicals of the Black Panther …

A Practical Method For Power Systems Transient Stability And Security, Hussain Hassan Al Marhoon May 2011

A Practical Method For Power Systems Transient Stability And Security, Hussain Hassan Al Marhoon

Stability analysis methods may be categorized by two major stability analysis methods: small-signal stability and transient stability analyses. Transient stability methods are further categorized into two major categories: numerical methods based on numerical integration, and direct methods. The purpose of this thesis is to study and investigate transient stability analysis using a combination of step-by-step and direct methods using Equal Area Criterion. The proposed method is extended for transient stability analysis of multi machine power systems. The proposed method calculates the potential and kinetic energies for all machines in a power system and then compares the largest group of kinetic …

Two Essays On Oil Futures Markets, Iman Adeinat May 2011

Two Essays On Oil Futures Markets, Iman Adeinat

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The first chapter of this dissertation estimates the relative contributions of two major exchanges on crude oil futures to the price discovery process-- Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), using trade-by-trade data in 2008. The study also empirically analyzes the effects of trading characteristics on the information share of these two markets. Trading characteristics examined in the study include trading volume, trade size, and trading costs. On average, CME is characterized by greater volume and trade size but also slightly greater bid-ask spread. CME leads the process of price discovery and this leadership is caused by relative trade …

The Construction Of Self In An Adult Survivor Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Elizabeth A. Meyer Christensen May 2011

The Construction Of Self In An Adult Survivor Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Elizabeth A. Meyer Christensen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Counselors working in a wide array of settings are likely to encounter clients who have significant histories of childhood trauma, including childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The effects of CSA on the adult survivor are complex, and often difficult to resolve. Many trauma theorists have hypothesized that these problems may be mediated by disturbances in the survivor's construction of self. This exploratory, phenomenological study examined the subjective self as it moved through the processes of therapy and recovery from CSA. The data consisted of written material generated over several years of my own therapeutic work, including journals, letters, and poems. The …

New Orleans, The New South, And The Fight For The Panama Exposition, Victoria D. Baiamonte May 2011

New Orleans, The New South, And The Fight For The Panama Exposition, Victoria D. Baiamonte

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

For various reasons, the city of New Orleans has often been ignored in discussions of the New South movement. New Orleans politicians joined the movement during the Progressive Era, much later than other Southern municipal leaders. In becoming a New South city, the Crescent City was launched onto the international trade scene. By an examination of city leaders' efforts to gain federal rights to host an exposition in celebration of the Panama Canal, this study argues New Orleans not only became a New South city, but an international trade entrepôt. Though the exposition efforts failed, the efforts of the city …

Professional Counselors' Perceptions Of Knowledge, Barriers, Support And Action Of Professional Advocacy, Michelle M. De La Paz May 2011

Professional Counselors' Perceptions Of Knowledge, Barriers, Support And Action Of Professional Advocacy, Michelle M. De La Paz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Leaders in the counseling field are encouraging practitioners to develop a social justice perspective to counseling to ensure fair and equitable treatment of clients and stress the importance of advocating on behalf of these individuals (Lee, 2007; Lee & Waltz, 1998; Lewis, Arnold, House, & Toporek, 2003; Lewis & Bradley, 2000). The counseling profession, because it is a relatively young field struggling with its own identity (Chi Sigma Iota, 2005; Eriksen, 1999; Gale & Austin, 2003; Myers & Sweeney, 2004) could also benefit from advocacy. A two-pronged approach of professional advocacy, which is the process of advocating for both clients …

Numerical Modeling Of River Diversions In The Lower Mississippi River, Joao Miguel Faisca Rodrigues Pereira May 2011

Numerical Modeling Of River Diversions In The Lower Mississippi River, Joao Miguel Faisca Rodrigues Pereira

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The presence of man-made levees along the Lower Mississippi River (MR) has significantly reduced the River sediment input to the wetlands and much of the River's sediment is now lost to the Gulf of Mexico. The sediment load in the River has also been decreased by dams and river revetments along the Upper MR. Freshwater and sediment diversions are possible options to help combat land loss. Numerical modeling of hydrodynamics and sediment transport of the MR is a useful tool to evaluate restoration projects and to improve our understanding of the resulting River response. The emphasis of this study is …

Transmutational Harmony, Jonathan Mayers May 2011

Transmutational Harmony, Jonathan Mayers

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The work that I have produced during my graduate studies at the University of New Orleans addresses the impact that humans have on the environment in our contemporary world. A primary focus, but not exclusive, includes industrial materials or objects, their overwhelming presence that informs the juxtaposition of economic progress, and the reality of environmental disruption. Humor and metaphor are central themes of my work and reference my personal observations and experiences of living in the midst of these environments. Sources from Contemporary underground art have been filtered through my exposure to studio practice and art history, mainly the autonomous …

Hitchhiking Through The Fire, Brent Mcknight May 2011

Hitchhiking Through The Fire, Brent Mcknight

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Ten years after the outbreak of an aggressive, fast-acting virus that kills then reanimates those infected, the world has become a bleak, hostile place. Water and food are scarce, valuable commodities, and survivors cluster together for safety in isolated enclaves where life is cheap and debauchery is king. In the middle of this grim hell-on-earth, Huxley, a young boy, lives with his idealistic father. When the father is killed, Huxley falls in with Bracken, a rugged gun-forhire, a desperado in every sense of the word. Against his instincts, Bracken is compelled to deliver Huxley to safety, all the while being …

"The Highest Type Of Disloyalty": The Struggle For Americanism In Louisiana During The Age Of Communist Ascendency, 1930s-1960s, Ryan Buchanan Prechter May 2011

"The Highest Type Of Disloyalty": The Struggle For Americanism In Louisiana During The Age Of Communist Ascendency, 1930s-1960s, Ryan Buchanan Prechter

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to show the pattern of red-baiting used in the United States to counter various forms of "subversive" social change. The paper illustrates how the issue of anti-communism was used as a political tool on the national level, and this tactic would trickle down to the state and local level, specifically into the public school systems. Focusing on Orleans Parish public schools, the narrative of red-baiting and anti-communist rhetoric is brought to life through the trials of Fortier High School. This study will chronicle how teachers became the tools of nation-building through state-sponsored "Americanism" programs. Students of Fortier …

The 1991 Madrid Peace Conference: U.S. Efforts Towards Lasting Peace In The Middle East Between Israel And Its Neighbors, Fernando Rodriguez May 2011

The 1991 Madrid Peace Conference: U.S. Efforts Towards Lasting Peace In The Middle East Between Israel And Its Neighbors, Fernando Rodriguez

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Over the years the Madrid Peace Conference has been relegated to paragraphs within history books and the importance of the conference seems to have been all but forgotten. While this may be due to the perceived failure of the talks to produce tangible peace negotiations, what one must take into consideration is the fact that neither the Oslo Accords nor the more recent “Road Map” to peace would have been possible if it were not for that first steps taken in Madrid. One must also not forget the diplomacy and countless man hours that were put forth with tireless effort …

"Against My Destiny": Reading An Italian Immigrant's Memoir In The Early 20th-Century South, Bethany Santucci May 2011

"Against My Destiny": Reading An Italian Immigrant's Memoir In The Early 20th-Century South, Bethany Santucci

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Giuseppe Emilio Rocconi's life narrative, The Story of My Life (1958), represents the hardships of immigration and assimilation through meditations on home, family, and religion. I read his narrative in contrast with white elite narratives that express nostalgia for sharecropping and the segregation era. I see his narrative as a reflection upon the costs of integrating into the white patriarchal economy and his sense of being neither fully Italian nor fully American.

In Hiding… , Roderick Worden May 2011

In Hiding… , Roderick Worden

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The conceptual foundation for my work lies in the idea of "interaction." I work towards exposing this idea in its more basic and routine form, as well as the broad scope of it. Ranging beyond the common associations made with human to human interaction, my work enters a number of realms including environmental, architectural, and intra-personal interactions, working amongst the subtleties of each. I seek to create an image of relate-able experience, thus I feel the medium of photography is necessitated, as it is rooted in the idea of documentary and realism, in effect, cataloguing images of or influenced by …

The Regulation Of Nap4 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Denise Capps May 2011

The Regulation Of Nap4 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Denise Capps

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The CCAAT binding-factor (CBF) is a transcriptional activator conserved in eukaryotes. The CBF in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a multimeric heteromer termed the Hap2/3/4/5 complex. Hap4, which contains the activation domain of the complex, is also the regulatory subunit and is known to be transcriptionally controlled by carbon sources. However, little is known about Hap4 regulation. In this report, I identify mechanisms by which Hap4 is regulated, including: (1) transcriptional regulation via two short upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5' leader sequence of HAP4 mRNA; (2) proteasome-dependent degradation of Hap4; and (3) identification of two negative regulators of HAP4 …

A "Melancholy Experience:" William C. C. Claiborne And The Louisiana Militia, 1811-1815, Michael J. Edwards

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

William C. C. Claiborne found himself a stranger in a strange land. Almost more a colonial governor of a European power rather than an American statesman, Claiborne grappled with maintaining a militia force for the Territory of Orleans, now the present day state of Louisiana. He built upon the volunteer companies he found within the city of New Orleans, but had little success molding the entire militia into an effective, efficient military force. Claiborne, hoping to use the fear generated by the January 1811 slave revolt to spur militia reform, maintained an active correspondence with the state's legislators, the area's …

An Assessment Of The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers' Environmental Plan Evaluation Methods, Michael Holland May 2011

An Assessment Of The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers' Environmental Plan Evaluation Methods, Michael Holland

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a federal agency with a mission to develop water resource projects to benefit the nation. Some of its large scale projects have been built to benefit cities, but through unintended consequences have caused economic and environmental damages. For example, its control of Mississippi River flooding has protected the City of New Orleans, but contributed to land loss in coastal Louisiana, and by some accounts, made the population more susceptible to hurricane damage. The agency has now embarked on a mission to restore some of the damaged environmental areas. This dissertation evaluates whether policies …

"Wood Leoun" . . . "Crueel Tigre": Animal Imagery And Metaphor In "The Knight's Tale", Jennifer Laburre

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The people of the Middle Ages believed animals were disconnected from themselves in terms of ability to reason and ability to resist passions. Humans and animals were created by God, but he bestowed man with a soul and the ability to resist earthly delights. When men were described in terms of their bestial counterparts it was conventionally meant to highlight some derogatory aspect of that character. Chaucer makes use of the animal-image throughout The Canterbury Tales, especially in "The Knight's Tale," to stress a break in each character from humane reason or to emphasize a lean towards a bestial nature. …

Kinetics Of The Electrocoagulation Of Oil And Grease, Guillermo Rincon May 2011

Kinetics Of The Electrocoagulation Of Oil And Grease, Guillermo Rincon

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Research on the electrocoagulation (EC) of hexane extractable materials (HEM) has been conducted at the University of New Orleans using a proprietary bench-scale EC reactor. The original reactor configuration forced the fluid to follow a vertical upward-downward path. An alternate electrode arrangement was introduced so that the path of flow became horizontal. Both configurations were evaluated by comparing the residence time distribution (RTD) data generated in each case. These data produced indication of internal recirculation and stagnant water when the fluid followed a vertical path. These anomalies were attenuated when the fluid flowed horizontally and at a velocity higher than …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Monosaccharide-Derived Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Kristopher Aaron Williams May 2011

Synthesis And Characterization Of Monosaccharide-Derived Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Kristopher Aaron Williams

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are interesting materials whose applications are as diverse and wide ranging as their molecular structures. These materials self-assemble through the formation of non-covelent intermolecular forces and interactions to form supramolecular assemblies that trap solvent within their matrices. Because of the non-covalent nature of the forces of self-assembly, the gelation process is typically thermally reversible. In addition, low molecular weight gelators can also be modified to respond to various stimuli, such as change in pH, presence of enzymes or metal cations, or exposure to light. The design of low molecular weight gelators is often difficult, and …

6,6’-Dimethoxygossypol: Molecular Structure, Crystal Polymorphism, And Solvate Formation., Carlos A. Zelaya

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

6,6’-Dimethoxygossypol (DMG) is a natural product of the cotton variety Gossypium barbadense and a derivative of gossypol. Gossypol has been shown to form an abundant number of clathrates with a large variety of compounds. One of the primary reasons why gossypol can form clathrates has been because of its ability to from extensive hydrogen bonding networks due to its hydroxyl and aldehyde functional groups. Prior to this work, the only known solvate that DMG formed was with acetic acid. DMG has methoxy groups substituted at two hydroxyl positions, and consequently there is a decrease in its ability to form hydrogen …
