La Bestia And Other Stories, Jessica Viada Aug 2011

La Bestia And Other Stories, Jessica Viada

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The following collection of short stories explores the notion of being caught between two worlds, of straddling physical, emotional, linguistic and metaphorical borders. I have chosen these characters in order to give voice to those who are often voiceless. The collection has been divided in two parts in order to challenge ideas of what is "real." I argue that the emotional truth of a story is paramount, and this reality can sometimes be best achieved through unconventional means.

Exploring Storybook Illustrations In Learning Word Meanings, Eleomarques Ferreira Rocha Aug 2011

Exploring Storybook Illustrations In Learning Word Meanings, Eleomarques Ferreira Rocha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study explores storybook illustrations in learning word meanings among English learners in a university intensive language program. The impact of children’s literature on the comprehension and vocabulary development of second language children is well-documented. However, the use of the literature with adults still needs to be researched. Therefore, a mixed-method study was designed (1) to investigate whether readers who read an authentic illustrated story differed from those who read the same story without illustrations; and (2) to learn more about the readers’ process of learning words from storybook illustrations. Results suggest that illustrations play an important role in both …

Echoes Of Laocoön's Warning In Letters From An American Farmer , Douglas Barry May 2011

Echoes Of Laocoön's Warning In Letters From An American Farmer , Douglas Barry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A dramatic shift in tone in the final letter of J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer reveals Farmer James' conflicting attitudes about an independent America. When the letters are juxtaposed with a Western myth of origin such as Virgil's Aeneid, it becomes clear that Crèvecoeur is forcing his narrating persona to repeat a pattern of civilization – destruction, renewal – on which all of Western civilization is based. The sudden pessimism that erupts in the penultimate "Distresses of a Frontier Man" is symptomatic of James' anxiety about the American Revolution and the resulting disruption in …

Mardi Gras draws millions of tourists to New Orleans yearly, contributing to the economy of the city. Visitors soon discover the thrill of catching "throws" tossed to paradegoers by members of parade organizations' riding floats. For tourists and locals alike, throws become the cultural currency of New Orleans during Carnival. Beads, doubloons, coconuts, cups and other throws develop an inherent value, enticing crowds. People esteem throws enough to compete for them, with varying levels of intensity, along parade routes and on the streets of the French Quarter. The purchase of throws by Carnival krewes also brings revenue into New Orleans. …

Assessing Microbial Diversity Through Nucleotide Variation, Ahmet Eren May 2011

Assessing Microbial Diversity Through Nucleotide Variation, Ahmet Eren

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Microbes are the most abundant and most diverse form of life on Earth, constituting the largest portion of the total biomass of the entire planet. They are present in every niche in nature, including very extreme environments, and they govern biogeochemical transformations in ecosystems. The human body is home to a diverse assemblage of microbial species as well. In fact, the number of microbial cells in the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, skin, airway passages and urogenital system is approximately an order of magnitude greater than the number of cells that make up the human body itself, and changes in the …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Nitroaromatic explosives, such as trinitrotoluene (TNT), are of particular environmental concern due to their recalcitrance in soils and their potent toxicity and mutagenicity to both aquatic and mammalian species. TNT was the most widely used military explosive through the era encompassing both the First and Second World Wars. As a result, there is widespread contamination of soils by TNT around weapons manufacture, testing, and disposal facilities. Fenton chemistry (ferrous ion catalyzed generation of hydroxyl radicals) has shown utility in the remediation of TNT in soils but it suffers from non-specificity and the need for acidic conditions to prevent loss of …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Revenue Sources And Undergraduate Students' Graduation Rates At Public Research Universities, Albertha H. Lawson May 2011

A Study Of The Relationship Between Revenue Sources And Undergraduate Students' Graduation Rates At Public Research Universities, Albertha H. Lawson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The public's demand for accountability will have a significant impact on research universities' revenue resources in the future. Driving the demand is a perceived lack of institutional productivity. Undergraduate students' graduation rates represent one product of public research universities. States have already latched onto these rates as a measure of institutional performance; and as a result, states have provided a basis for public research universities to use the relationship between dollars invested in the institution and undergraduate students' graduation rates to respond to accountability issues. Current research provides little insight into this relationship. Research in this study uses concepts from …

Matthew Groneman explores the dynamic nature of language through a series of poems broken into three thematically-linked sections. The first section includes poems about the natural world, scientific processes and technological innovation. The second section is centered around poems exploring American culture, from the nineteenth century to contemporary times. The final section explores the speaker's perceptions of self, particularly with regards to the speaker's masculinity relative to societal expectations thereof. The poems play with concepts of fluid semiotics by employing notions of the trickster as narrator in several poem, disrupting binaries and complicating the nature of meaning. Also utilized toward …

Just Like Ole' Mammy Used To Make: Reinterpreting New Orleans African-American Praline Vendors As Entrepreneurs, Chanda Nunez May 2011

Just Like Ole' Mammy Used To Make: Reinterpreting New Orleans African-American Praline Vendors As Entrepreneurs, Chanda Nunez

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Women commonly sold goods on the streets of New Orleans throughout the city‘s colonial and antebellum history. Forming a significant presence among the city‘s market places, they sold various food items which included coffee, calas, and pralines. Perhaps the most popular of the African-American street vendors was the praline women. They attracted the attention of visitors as well as residents. Despite the popularity of these treats, the highly visible and enterprising praline vendors were simultaneously celebrated and caricatured by white observers who depicted them as mammy figures not only in store advertisements and logos, but also in everyday annotations.

Death, Death, I Know Thee Now!' Mourning Jewelry In England And New Orleans In The Nineteenth Century, Joanna Tabony May 2011

Death, Death, I Know Thee Now!' Mourning Jewelry In England And New Orleans In The Nineteenth Century, Joanna Tabony

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Descriptions of mourning adornments in England and New Orleans in the nineteenth century are used to argue that many of the customs of mourning in England -- the designs, themes, and materials -- also were present in New Orleans. This study draws from these observations and sources to suggest that mourning practices involving jewelry and costume became more functional and less formal in both England and New Orleans as the century progressed, while French customs retained and even grew in complexity. The high level of trade between Britain and New Orleans during the nineteenth century, reflected in the jewelry and …

Parses: A Pipeline For Analysis Of Rna-Sequencing Exogenous Sequences, Joseph Coco May 2011

Parses: A Pipeline For Analysis Of Rna-Sequencing Exogenous Sequences, Joseph Coco

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) has become one of the most widely used techniques to interrogate the transcriptome of an organism since the advent of next generation sequencing technologies [1]. A plethora of tools have been developed to analyze and visualize the transcriptome data from RNA-Seq experiments, solving the problem of mapping reads back to the host organism's genome [2] [3]. This allows for analysis of most reads produced by the experiments, but these tools typically discard reads that do not match well with the reference genome. This additional information could reveal important insight into the experiment and possible contributing factors to the …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Civil rights commemorative boulevards are an increasingly important method of framing African American community revitalization and persistent historical inequities. Often underlying planning efforts to revitalize segregated African American neighborhoods, these boulevards are one important change mechanism for realizing equitable development and challenging structural racism. This thesis demonstrates the central importance of these commemorative boulevards in framing redevelopment and maintaining community resolve during the long struggle for revitalization
