Reducing Recidivism Among Youthful Offenders: Evidence-Based Practice Strategies, Kate Shade
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:
In the United States, housing youth in prison with an orientation toward punishment is becoming a thing of the past. Instead, the justice system is returning to a rehabilitation model (Mendel, 2010). However, the U.S. continues to incarcerate more youth than any other country in the world (Raphael, 2011). Effective treatment programs are limited in number and are costly. A meta-analysis of interventions for youthful offenders determined that greater than 50% of the juveniles incarcerated in the U.S. return to the justice system as adults (Lipsey, 2009). The purpose of this presentation is …

Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: Individuals with chronic genetic conditions experience personal and family stigma throughout their lives. Stigma associated with genetically inherited conditions is noted to negatively impact health-related quality of life and community participation. Stigma in sickle cell disease (SCD) was appraised via pilot study for instrument development, testing for face validity and preliminary psychometrics.
Methods: Community Based Participatory Research methods were used to select 42 participants for survey and feedback. The authors adapted the likert type stigma scale from the epilepsy literature, developing two surveys, one for the individual and one for caregiver/family member. …

Development And Psychometric Testing Of A Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Discharge Scoring System, Laurie Ecoff, Kristen Vacinek, Jeanne Palomo, Jaynelle F. Stichler
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013:
Purpose: Accurate assessment of the patient's status post-operatively is critical prior to discharge from the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to a nursing unit. The current discharge scoring system did not accurately predict readiness for discharge from the PACU. The purpose of the study was to develop and psychometrically test a PACU discharge scoring system.
Methods: A literature search was conducted for a reliable and valid PACU discharge scoring system. Although several systems were found, no system contained all criteria important for a safe discharge. Gaps included pain, nausea, hypertension, oxygenation, temperature, and …
Reducing Falls In Outpatients: Evaluation Of Fall Risk Assessment And Identification Of Fallers, Katherine Diane Pendleton-Romig
Reducing Falls In Outpatients: Evaluation Of Fall Risk Assessment And Identification Of Fallers, Katherine Diane Pendleton-Romig
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: The purpose of the project aimed to study occurrences of injurious falls in outpatient areas in a health care facility with a focus on how falls can be mitigated. Prevention of falls is a national patient safey goal. Research shows that falls are more likely among older adults; however, falls may be preventable if fall risk screening and education could be started before patients become older adults. Risk factors and support factors are viewed as higher priorities for fall prevention than physiological measures.
Methods: The project was conducted in the internal medicine …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: Research was guided by Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Transforming Care at the Bedside framework. Evidence suggests clinical signs of patient deterioration may appear hours before life-threatening events occur. Subtle changes may go undetected in hospitals contributing to an estimated 98,000 annual preventable deaths. Previous research indicates the use of early warning scoring systems (EWSS) may decrease the incidence of cardiopulmonary arrest in the hospitalized patient if used to identify and treat the at-risk for deterioration individual. Hospitals worldwide have adapted EWSS to address the problem; however, few prospective studies have reported reliability …

A Conceptual Framework For Educational Design To Bridge The Theory Practice Gap, Yvonne Botma
A Conceptual Framework For Educational Design To Bridge The Theory Practice Gap, Yvonne Botma
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Tuesday, July 23, 2013:
Purpose: Most educators in health care try to enable students to apply what they have learned in classrooms and simulation laboratories to their clinical practice. However, the theory-practice gap remains a contentious issue between faculty and practice. According to a vast number of sources a systemic approach is needed to bridge the theory-practice gap. Various systemic models for transfer of learning refer to personal characteristics, educational design factors, and organisational climate as critical elements in bridging the theory-practice gap. This framework provides tapered information and is a frame of reference to organise thinking, …

Adaptation Of A Best Practice Model For Recognition And Treatment Of Postpartum Depression In A Private Obstetrics Practice, Vicki E. Long
Adaptation Of A Best Practice Model For Recognition And Treatment Of Postpartum Depression In A Private Obstetrics Practice, Vicki E. Long
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Depression in women is tied to phases of reproduction, with the postpartum period highlighted as critical (Yonkers, et al., 2009). This period may be marred by feelings of low self-worth, disassociation with mothering, with the risk of maternal or fetal harm (Byatt, Simas, Lundquist, Johnson & Ziedonis, 2012; Nonacs, 2006). In a meta-analysis done by Bennett and colleagues, the incidence of postpartum depression (PPD) ranged from 10 - 20 %, with 12% often quoted as average (Bennett, Einarson, Taddio, Koren & Einarson, 2004). Screening to identify at-risk women is used worldwide employing various …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Friday, July 26, 2013:
Purpose: Insufficient fruit/vegetable intake (FVI) is among the ten leading risk factors for global mortality and is linked to the rising incidence of obesity worldwide (World Health Organization, 2011). Evidence suggests the theoretical concepts from social cognitive theory identified as individual, social and environmental factors influence the facilitators and barriers to healthy eating (HE). The purpose of this study is to better understand the complexities related to HE and provide insight leading to increased FVI in a community garden setting.
Methods: A qualitative pilot study design was used. Data was collected from 13 …

Using The Rasch Model For Psychometric Examination Of Food Security And Acculturation Surveys, Jill Francesca Kilanowski
Using The Rasch Model For Psychometric Examination Of Food Security And Acculturation Surveys, Jill Francesca Kilanowski
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: Rasch model is used to obtain measurements from two categorical variables to assess the probability of a specified response as a function of person and item parameters. That is the probability of a correct response is a logistic function of the difference between the person and item parameter item. The higher level of a person's ability relative to the difficulty of an item, the higher the probability of a correct response on that item. Rasch models have general applicablity and are used in psychometrics to evaluate theory and technique of measurement. The …
