The outcomes associated with eating disorders can significantly impact the growth and development associated with this crucial stage of emerging adulthood and have the potential to impede academic and future career endeavours. To best assist students, it is vital to build a comprehensive understanding of their experiences with eating disorder symptoms and their needs and preferences for support. Methods: Survey responses from 176 …

Nursing In Sendafa, Ethiopia: A Collaboration Of Mission, Mentoring, And Medicine, Dawn Becker
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Ethiopia is the second poorest nation in the world. Ninety percent of the population lives in poverty, over 50% on less than one dollar a day. The village of Sendafa has about 15,000 people, most of whom have never seen a nurse or doctor. The primary health issues in Ethiopia continue to be contaminated water, poor sanitation, HIV/AIDS, poor nutrition, and inadequate access to medical care. Since 2007, York County nurses and doctors have partnered with Ethiopian doctors to provide a one-week medical clinic in the village, along with supplying year-long medications for HIV/AIDS and water-born diseases. Ethiopian nursing students …

Effect Of Clinical Practice Guidelines Developed Base In Evidence-Based Practice For Postoperative Pain Management In Patients Who Underwent Orthopedic Surgery, Chintana Phannetr
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Effective pain management has been shown to promote earlier ambulation and reduced postoperative complications. However, pain management in patients who underwent orthopedic surgery remains an issue in nursing practice. Purpose: This study were to assess pain scores on postoperative day 1 to day 5, to examine patients' satisfaction on pain management, and to ascertain nurses' satisfaction on the implementation of a CPG. Methods: 42 samples from surgical units of a hospital in Thailand were randomly assigned into the intervention group (21 participants received the CPG) and control group (21 participants received usual treatment). The CPG consisted of four stages including, pre-operative, …

Understanding Barriers To Completing A Bsn Program: A Focus On Hispanic Students, Suzanne Beltz, Nancy Goodman
Understanding Barriers To Completing A Bsn Program: A Focus On Hispanic Students, Suzanne Beltz, Nancy Goodman
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Hispanics are the largest and fastest-growing minority population in the United States. Of the registered nurses in the United Stated only 3.8% are Hispanic. The percentage of Hispanic nurses educated at the baccalaureate level or higher is even smaller. The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi mission includes serving and educating the people of South Texas where the population is over 85% Hispanic. Over time, working with students who were struggling in the nursing program, it appeared that stereotypical evaluations of these struggles did not explain the barriers being shared by students. Purpose: The purpose of this naturalistic study was to examine …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: It is estimated that in 2050 nearly two billion people worldwide will be 60 years or older, and nurses must be well-prepared to improve and address their health-related needs. However, it may be difficult for students to understand and empathize with older adults, as they may not yet have experienced aging-related challenges. The purpose of this project was to examine the impact of participation in an aging simulation game on nursing students' empathy and attitudes toward older adults as well as their understanding of the healthcare system.
Methods: Nursing students played the role of an older adult during a …

Methods: A quasi-experimental approach adopted using three instruments for testing the suicide care education intervention. The three instruments are: (1) the suicidal caring ability Scale (2) the caring stress Scale (3) the suicide attitudes Scale. The experimental group attended a two-hour personal information session and received an education handbook on caring for suicidal outpatients when beginning this research and the control group received routine discharge information. There was not any intervention after the …

Caring For Pregnant Smokers: Nurses' Views On Cessation Interventions, Adele M. Spegman, Andrea A. Wary, Leslie A. Laam
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Smoking during pregnancy is a significant yet modifiable risk that negatively affects maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. Practice standards recommend assessment of tobacco use at each prenatal visit, consistent messages and action plans that relate to women's readiness to quit (ACOG, 2010). Despite public health initiatives and targeted interventions, the 12- 20% of pregnant women who self-report smoking is considered a significant underestimate of the actual prevalence (Shipton, 2009). Little is reported about the outcomes of nursing cessation interventions. This study examined prenatal nurses' views and experiences with smoking cessation.
Methods: The observational design drew on Artinian's Intersystem …
