Assessment, Intervention And Treatment Of Geriatric Psychopathology : A Comparison Of The Medical And Behavioral Models, Susan C. Mcclintock Jan 1982

Assessment, Intervention And Treatment Of Geriatric Psychopathology : A Comparison Of The Medical And Behavioral Models, Susan C. Mcclintock

Honors Theses

The elderly represent nearly a third of the population in public psychiatric facilities. The social and physiological changes associated with aging can lead to a variety of psychiatric disturbances which necessitate institutionalization of the elderly individual. Treatment of these disturbances is likely to be based on the medical model of psychopathology, although findings indicate that behaviorally-oriented therapy may often be the more appropriate course of action. The reported findings carry implications pertinent to the future of geropsychology.

Is The West Responsible For Lenin's Rise To Power?, Stephen D. Ramsey Apr 1981

Is The West Responsible For Lenin's Rise To Power?, Stephen D. Ramsey

Honors Theses

The year 1917 is probably the most significant year in modern Russian history, Many people view this as the year of the Bolsheviks. Indeed, Lenin and his cohorts seized the reigns of government in November (all date will be given in New Style) of that year and propelled Russia down an untrodden path of history. The effects of this revolution now permeate the globe. Some view that fateful day as the beginning of man's salvation from the exploitation of capitalism. Others view it as the birth of a pernicious disease which must be eliminated in a final apocalyptic battle to …

The Evaluation Of Social Programs, Susan L. Hitchcock Apr 1981

The Evaluation Of Social Programs, Susan L. Hitchcock

Honors Theses

In the uncertain economy of today, there is one thing that we all can be sure of, that prices will increase. It is almost inevitable that everything will be effected by inflation: from food to gas to home heating oil. The very quality of the lives that we lead may be altered by the path that the economy of the United States is taking. The recently elected President, Ronald Reagan, has taken as his main task the stabilization of inflation. The improvement of the economy and the balancing of the federal government's budget. In order to meet these goals, President …

Iran; Nicaragua; Cuba; An Analysis Of Revolutions, Neil Moynihan Jan 1981

Iran; Nicaragua; Cuba; An Analysis Of Revolutions, Neil Moynihan

Honors Theses

Can these revolutions be explained by the withdrawal of the United States? It seems not. Can all three revolutions fit under any one theory of revolution? The answer here will probably also be: no; each theory, however, gives valuable hints about what aspects of each revolution one should analyze.

The Evolution Of The Statute Of Uses And Its Effects On English Law, Timothy L. Martin Jan 1981

The Evolution Of The Statute Of Uses And Its Effects On English Law, Timothy L. Martin

Honors Theses

The separation of the lay and ecclesiastical courts complicated the law of succession as they drew a distinction between real and personal property. Laws pertaining to land were molded by royal courts of common law and equity, whereas laws relevant to succession of chattels were based on Roman and canonical law as interpreted by the ecclesiastical courts.

The Treatments Of Child Abuse, Susan D. Haske Jan 1981

The Treatments Of Child Abuse, Susan D. Haske

Honors Theses

Child abuse is a major problem in our society today. It is the major killer of children in the Untied States. (Kalman, 1977) There are many different estimates of the rate of occurrence, and no one knows for sure how prevalent it is. The major problem with making estimates of incidence is that so many cases are never reported. Only 20-50% of the cases are reported. (Kempe, 1978)

There are three types of child abuse. (Roth, 1975) One type is situational. This type is in response to an overwhelming stress. It usually happens one time, and is the easiest to …

A Voice From The Shadows: The Novels Of Toni Morrison, Ardith A. Muse Jan 1981

A Voice From The Shadows: The Novels Of Toni Morrison, Ardith A. Muse

Honors Theses

The three novels of Toni Morrison to date deal with elements of both the feminine and the African consciousness. The dominant characters developed in her novels act within a socially isolated black community, and often in a largely or wholly female household. The values embodied in her novels, as well as the imagery and language, are derived in large part from African culture and archetypes of the feminine unconscious.

National Food Brokers Association Members Communicate Attitudes About Women Working In Food Brokerage Positions, Dennis S. Moore Oct 1980

National Food Brokers Association Members Communicate Attitudes About Women Working In Food Brokerage Positions, Dennis S. Moore

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the attitudes of the National Food Brokers Association Members in the East North Central states about women working in the food brokerage positions of retail sales representative, sales supervisor, and sales manager. This study examines three hypotheses: (1) The small percentage of women in these positions is due to unawareness of the job titles and opportunities available, (2) The small percentage of women in these positions is due to the fact that top management believes male employees are more effective in relating to principles than women, and, (3) The small percentage of …

Thomas Cromwell : The Force Behind The Henrician Reformation, Stephanie Annette Finley Apr 1980

Thomas Cromwell : The Force Behind The Henrician Reformation, Stephanie Annette Finley

Honors Theses

From the Henrician Reformation to the middle of the twentieth century, Thomas Cromwell, the man who made the Reformation possible by carefully guiding national legislation through Parliament, has been termed a "black legend'' due to his ruthless ability to enact reforms at all costs. The asunder English Church fissioned from international Christendom with the King as supreme head was a price too high for some Englishmen and ineluctably doomed Cromwell's life and memory. However, England emerged from the Reformation a more efficiently organized nation ruled by the King-in-Parliament, and it can not be denied that the great achievements of Henry …

The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell Apr 1980

The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell

Honors Theses

The main consideration throughout all the paper will be. the correlation between Beethoven's symphonies and his Heiligenstadt Testament. Because the so-called "Battle" Symphony is not a true symphony at all (being written for a huge, mechanical contraption), it will not be dealt with at all.

The Cause Of Sobriety : David Lloyd George And Temperance Reform, Philip A. Krinsky Jan 1980

The Cause Of Sobriety : David Lloyd George And Temperance Reform, Philip A. Krinsky

Honors Theses

Temperance was a major British issue after World War I. Excessive drunkenness, not alcoholism per se, was the primary concern of the two parliamentary parties. When Lloyd George enter Parliament the two major parties were the Liberals and the Conservatives. Temperance was neither a problem that Parliament sought to quickly solve nor the single issue of Lloyd George's public career. Rather, temperance remained within a flux of political squabbling between the two parties and even among the respective blocs within each Party. Inevitably, compromises had to be made between the dissenting factions.

This Citizens Advisory Committee is required under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant, Entitlement Grant Program. The Development And Growth Of The Richmond Symphony, Elaine Susan Mccauley May 1979

The Development And Growth Of The Richmond Symphony, Elaine Susan Mccauley

Honors Theses

In this paper, I have attempted to explain the administrative and financial operations of the Richmond Symphony. The first two chapters are meant to serve as an introduction to the Richmond Symphony, and they help explain the circumstances leading the development of the present Symphony. Also, much emphasis has been placed on the expansion of the Symphony since 1957.

Since the purpose of this paper is to examine the financial status of the Richmond Symphony, I found it beneficial to compare the Richmond Symphony to other American orchestras with similar budgets. From this research, it is evident that the Richmond …

Cultural Barbarism And The Romantic Ideal An Analysis Of Three Cases Of Hero-Worship In 19th Century Germany, Gregory R. Chemnitz Apr 1979

Cultural Barbarism And The Romantic Ideal An Analysis Of Three Cases Of Hero-Worship In 19th Century Germany, Gregory R. Chemnitz

Honors Theses

The 19th century produced numerous intellectual currents which were expressions of an incompatibility with the modern age. In reaction to the emergence of a now, urban, petty bourgeois world the 19th century intellectual of ten assumed the role of a prophet, warning of the decadent course of history while portraying an ideal form of existence which could eventually be achieved. One manifestation of this expression of dissent was Romanticism, and especially German Romanticism. In Germany there arose a passionate outcry for the internal purification of man and the return to an earlier condition. Associated with this was the worship of …

The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof Apr 1979

The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof

Honors Theses

Several factors were originally influential in my selection of this topic for study. First, I was interested in Ralph Vaughan Williams' music and his compositional style. Secondly, I had both an interest in and a certain degree of familiarity as a performer with the areas of choral music and folk music. Finally, Vaughan Williams' short a cappella choral works lent themselves well to investigation, because they had not received much study previously, and because they presented a homogeneous corpus of works which was appropriate for this type of survey.

The Ghost Of Malthus, Steve Emmert Apr 1979

The Ghost Of Malthus, Steve Emmert

Honors Theses

No discussion of population can being and end with the examination of historical data, perhaps combined with some extrapolation of past trends into the future. Equally suspect would be an treatise which ignored these issues. In few disciplines will one find historical trends as striking as that of population growth.

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles

Honors Theses

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of interest in research on the extent and manner in which a person views him/herself in various settings. Some refer to this as self-preoccupation (Sarason, 1975, 1978; Wine, 1971), while others call it self-awareness, a state (Duval and Wicklund, 1972) or self-consciousness, a trait, (Buss and Scheier, 1976). It has been hypothesized that human consciousness is bidirectional; that is, it can be focused inward to the self or outward to the external environment (Bandura, 1977). There is some research and theory that suggests that the focus of this attention, influences the …

Coke, Wentworth, And The Drafting Of The Petition Of Right, Frances S. Taylor Apr 1978

Coke, Wentworth, And The Drafting Of The Petition Of Right, Frances S. Taylor

Honors Theses

In 1628, members of the English Parliament confronted the problem of arbitrary rule by the king, Charles I. Wishing to prevent future royal violations of their fundamental liberties, both houses sought a remedy. Their efforts culminated in the Petition of Right, a statement of the rights of Englishmen under the common law. While many men could be named as contributors to the Petition's success, Sir Edward Coke and Sir Thomas Wentworth, members of the House ofCommons, stand out as two of its major architects. Without their contributions, the Petition would have succumbed to outside pressures early in the session. Biographers …

The Transiational Period: Massive Resistance And Norfolkd, Va., Malnie Ijams Payne Apr 1977

The Transiational Period: Massive Resistance And Norfolkd, Va., Malnie Ijams Payne

Honors Theses

Segregation itself was not dead in Virginia, but it took on a more subtle approach. Governor Almond appointed a commission on the same day the schools opened in Norfolk to deal with the problem in a different way. The commission brought forth the Perrow or "freedom of choice" plan, lettin gparents decide if their children would attend an integrated school. No, segregation was not dead, it had just gone into hiding. When and if segregation ned altogether, whether it be "dejure" (by law) or "defacto" (by the fact), the transition from past attitudes of racial superiority to a "colorless" society …

William C. Rives : A Study In Transformation From Democrat To Whig, Frances Taylor Jan 1977

William C. Rives : A Study In Transformation From Democrat To Whig, Frances Taylor

Honors Theses

William Cabell Rives, active in the party, political, and economic issues before the nation in the 1830s, played a significant part in the emerging and shifting party structure of these years. A Jacksonian Democrat by 1827, he split with the party in 1837, participated in the founding of an amorphous Conservative party where he headed the state organization, and finally transferred his allegiance to the Whig part in 1840. Key factors in this transformation were the economic issues of a national bank, the Specie Circular, and the Independent Treasury. In his attempt to find solutions to these problems, he kept …

Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard Dec 1976

Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard

Honors Theses

Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor is not entirely an original work. Eleven of the twenty-five moments were either borrowed from Bach's earlier cantatas or were transcribed from the Mass into later choral works. In the process of borrowing, Bach often made significant changes in the original composition. In the preparation of this paper, each parody movement in the Mass was compared with the work from which it was drawn or, in four cases, the work drawn from it. Variants between the model and the parody were written down and classified. The resulting categories suggest insights into Bach's reasons …

Causes Of Obesity, Barbara Brown Apr 1976

Causes Of Obesity, Barbara Brown

Honors Theses

The preoccupation with obesity finds expression in the popularity of books and articles dealing with dieting and weight control, the rapid growth of weight reduction groups such as Tops and Weight Watchers, as well as the full marketing of numerous low calorie and dietetic foods. Much of the interest in weight control is a consequence of the current standards of physical beauty in our society. But another more pressing reason for interest in weight control is the documented evidence relating obesity to various somatic disorders.

Virginia Architecture In The Seventeenth Century : The Medieval Style, Elizabeth Neal Pitzer Apr 1976

Virginia Architecture In The Seventeenth Century : The Medieval Style, Elizabeth Neal Pitzer

Honors Theses

Virginia colonists recreated the old world in the new in the seventeenth century. They brought to America the medieval style of architecture so popular with the humbler classes of artisan and yeoman in England. People from this element of society, hoping to improve their fortunes, immigrated to the new world. Longing for familiar landmarks, they built homes in the traditional medieval style reminiscent of England. A medieval cottage was also a practical dwelling for the colonial family because it was fairly simple for the amateur builder to construct.
