King Charles I During His Trial And Execution : His Personal Life And The Alteration Of His Personality, Jonathan H. Poston
King Charles I During His Trial And Execution : His Personal Life And The Alteration Of His Personality, Jonathan H. Poston
Honors Theses
The "martyrdom" of Charles I has been a subject of controversy by historians, amateur and professional, since the moment the King;s head was severed on the block at Whitehall. The purpose of this paper is not to recount events repeated throughout a large array of books on the subject, but to examine a possible reason for the martyred reputation of Charles and to examine his personality.
Dates used in this paper reflect a need for uniformity, The English Calendar in 1648-1649 was still the Julian (or Old Style), which was ten days behind the rest of Europe. Also, although England …
The Tudors And Their Parliaments, Mark W. Cummins
The Tudors And Their Parliaments, Mark W. Cummins
Honors Theses
Up to the reign of the Tudors and in some respects to the Stuarts, Parliament was controlled by the King. Under the Tudors, a change came about between these two "branches" of the English government. The Parliament, especially the Commons, began to assert their authority. They began to "flex their muscles" and the crown began to lose its dominance in Parliament.
This conflict between the crown and Parliament would result in the English Civil War and the establishment of constitutional monarchy in England.
Presidential Impeachment: Must It Lie For A Crime?, Monte L. Brown
Presidential Impeachment: Must It Lie For A Crime?, Monte L. Brown
Honors Theses
Not since Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 has presidential impeachment been seriously considered. But in 1974 our country, for the second time in it's history, faced the possibility that our President may, in the words of the Constitution, "be re moved from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." It was this great, but unfortunate event in our history, that prompted me to write this thesis.
Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson
Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson
Honors Theses
Along with many other psychologists and sociologists, I am alarmed by the rapid increase in divorce rates. Toffler, in Future Shock, suggests one result of increasing technology might be the break up of the basic family unit. Gone are the days of the average couple meeting and settling down in the same town they have always lived in, surrounded by a secure and stable milieu. No longer are most women satisfied to take on the role of housewife, accepting their main responsibility as cleaning, cooking, and clothing their families. A marriage in our increasingly changing society is made up of …
The Great Potato Debate, James D. Hudson
The Great Potato Debate, James D. Hudson
Honors Theses
Anencephaly and spina bifida cystica are two of the most common severe congenital malformations consistently observed in human populations. Both represent defects in the neural tube and share a significant number of similar epidemiological associations among them, occupational class, geography, sex ratio, maternal age, year and season of the year. In anencephaly most of the brain and upper skull never form usually resulting in death within a few hours of birth. Spina bifida cystica is a malformation of the spinal cord often causing paralysis, vulnerability to infection, and early death. In 1972, Dr. J.H. Renwick presented a controversial hypothesis which …

Power, Elitism, And Lawyers: An Examination Of The Richmond Legal Establishment And Its Impact On The Making Of Social And Economic Policy-Making Within The Commonwealth Of Virginia., Stephen C. St. John
Honors Theses
Within the annals of American academia, much time and effort has been expended in the attempt to answer the crucial question of who wields power within the community and more specifically inside the realm of governmental policy-making. This pursuit has taken many forms and focuses throughout the years, as the spotlight of community power inquiries have shifted from one group of societal actors to another. Such focuses however have quite frequently neglected to give proper consideration to the immensely important roles played in the community and governmental power structure by those individuals who collectively form the legal profession. Of all …

A Study Of The Relevance Of Debate Through A Comparison Of Propositions With Congrssional Deliberation, Janine Holloman

Anti-Catholicism In The 1920'S And Al Smith, Michael Alfonso Reynolds
Anti-Catholicism In The 1920'S And Al Smith, Michael Alfonso Reynolds
Honors Theses
The origin of this project stems from an episode in the life of my maternal grandfather. An Italian immigrant in a small Michigan community, he found his religion and ethnic origin were a handicap in business and society. In 1927, the local Ku Klux Klan ordered him to close his grocery store and c encouraged him to leave town. His reply was emphatically negative. By chance, a short time later, he heard the Klan had planned a rally to take place on the outskirts of town. After packing his Ford with his children and his pocket with his gun, he …
Hirabayashi And Korematsu: The Stone Court's Double-Edged Sword, Thomas Seilheimer
Hirabayashi And Korematsu: The Stone Court's Double-Edged Sword, Thomas Seilheimer
Honors Theses
Law, as a fixed or immutable device for civilized social intercourse, is a myth. All too often the law has been construed in capital letters, and little has it been realized or remembered that the law has been written by people and interpreted by people. Rather than the rigidity and permanence of steel and stone, the law expounded by the Supreme Court has been more like clay. Case upon case, decision after decision, the law of the Court has been constantly re-molded and re-defined to meet the ever-changing needs of society, and to protect the personal freedoms of American citizens.
Robert Ryland And The First African Baptist Church Of Richmond : Their Antebellum Years, Teresa Payne
Robert Ryland And The First African Baptist Church Of Richmond : Their Antebellum Years, Teresa Payne
Honors Theses
During the antebellum years, the First African Baptist Church had a significant influence on the religious and social life of Richmond Negroes. By the Civil War, several thousand blacks had been baptized under its auspices. In spite of white reluctance to permit an independent organization of Negro worshipers, the black members were allowed to leave the First Baptist Church of Richmond, a fact which countered the spirit of the times and distinguished this church. The Baptist Church in the South was not known for deep anti-slavery sentiments, especially after slavery became profitable. In addition, after 1831 many southern whites were …
The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale
The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale
Honors Theses
Parliament passed its first comprehensive public health act in 1848. Prior to that time Britain as well as other European countries had mostly just tolerated insanitary conditions.
In English medieval towns people threw their garbage onto the narrow streets where animals--pigs, cattle, ducks--roamed, Houses were built with projections over the streets which blocked light and ventilation. There were few qualms about slaughtering animals on the streets. The common method of sewerage was by cesspools which in some cases were built underneath the houses and in most cases were cleaned out only once every several years by the "dust-collectors". Even in …
The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts
The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts
Honors Theses
The woman suffrage movement in Virginia, as in other parts of the nation, must be viewed within the total context of reform which pervaded in the first two decades of the twentieth century in America. The evils associated with the industrial revolution, mass immigration, and the urban crisis produced in the minds of men and women a favorable climate for sweeping sociological changes. Despite the receptive attitudes of individual men and women, the woman suffrage movement could never have been successful without "a heroic mustering of effort....," which has never since been achieved by this same group expect during a …
A Study Of The Utility And Validity Of Earnings Forecasts, Michael P. Howell
A Study Of The Utility And Validity Of Earnings Forecasts, Michael P. Howell
Honors Theses
According to William J. Casey, the past Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and recently appointed Under Secretary of State and Economic Affairs, forecasting should be the first and most important priority of all areas of management and public accounting. Only large institutional investment corporations have had access to such "useful" information when needed. Consequently, large investors are able to make more objective and intelligent investment decisions. A recent study determined that few investment corporations veritably have access to pertinent internal forecasting models. In fact, when interviewed, many executives claimed that even if they could procure such information, they …
The Socialist Evolvement Of The Cuban Revolution 1948-1960, Ross E. Chapman
The Socialist Evolvement Of The Cuban Revolution 1948-1960, Ross E. Chapman
Honors Theses
Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba after a surprisingly powerless Batista fled the country during the early morning hours of January 1, 1959. Joyous celebration swept the country as Castro made his triumphant journey across the island, leaving his hideout of two years in the Sierra Maestra for Havana. The revolution had succeeded in over throwing the hated Batista, for whom almost all elements of Cuban society felt disdain. The people were rejoicing at his overthrow* let most had little conception of what was to come. Fidel Castro, outside of being a popular hero, was a little known commodity …
Conflict Theory: Concepts, Techniques, And Stages, Thomas Kramer
Conflict Theory: Concepts, Techniques, And Stages, Thomas Kramer
Honors Theses
The social worker of today is being placed in situations which call for him to devise new tools and strategies of intervention which are relevant to present day problems. It is recognized that many of our current social problems are inherent in some of our institutions and that only by changing these institutions can real results be achieved. Problems arise due to the fact that these institutions often stringently resist change and conventional methods employed by professional practitioners have often only been able to solve or ease individual difficulties or maladustments. There have been a growing number of social workers …

Soviet International Law : Theory And Practice, Rozanne D. Oliver
Soviet International Law : Theory And Practice, Rozanne D. Oliver
Honors Theses
After World War II, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics became a "Great Power," surpassed in might by only the United States. The foreign policy of the Soviet Union now exerts a tremendous influence on the international scene, making the study of Soviet policies a "must" for the student of international affairs. The question of the role of international law in the foreign relations of the U.S.S.R. is an interesting and important one. Are changes in the international system reflected in Soviet views of international law? Have the Soviet theories had significant impacts on the actions of other states? To …
Manumission Of Slaves In Fauquier County, Virginia, 1830-1860, Thomas C. Givens
Manumission Of Slaves In Fauquier County, Virginia, 1830-1860, Thomas C. Givens
Honors Theses
Efforts ro free slaves in the Unites States legally took two paths--manumission ofspecific slaces by individual masters and emancipation of all slaves by legislative or constitutional act. During the Civil War, all slaves in belligerent states received their freedom through emancipation. Prior to that time, in spite of agitation by Abolitionists and other groups, attempts of general emancipation failed in the South. In 1831-32, the General Assembly of Virginia seriously considered the possibility of emancipation couled with removal from the stae of the black population, but the proposition faile dbecause of the enormous practical difficulties which such an undertaking would …
New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy
New Forms Of Heterosexual Marriage And Mating, Robert Lundy
Honors Theses
One third to one half of marriages are destined to end in a divorce court. However, in the de jure system or orders, monogamous marriage is the only accepted form with sexual behavior limited thereto. The nuclear family is the economic and residential unit. The expectation is that the marriage should last for the lifetime of the spouses, although increasingly there are provisions for exceptional cases termed failure. Other popular expectations are that the woman will be the socializing agent and the male will be the economic agent. This thesis explores the changing nature of families and marriage.
The Fabians And Socialized Medicine : A Study Of Fabian Attitudes Toward National Health Services, Linda Mcintosh
The Fabians And Socialized Medicine : A Study Of Fabian Attitudes Toward National Health Services, Linda Mcintosh
Honors Theses
Concentrating on the Minority Report of the Royal Commission on the Poor Law (1909), the National Insurance Act (1911), the Beveridge Report (1942), and the National Insurance and National Health Service Acts (1946), this thesis studies the various Fabian attitudes and philosophies toward British health services. No one "Fabian program" existed; the Society did not, as a single body, endorse specific programs or ideas, allowing its members freedom of thought and opinion. Inside Fabian publications this policy is enunciated:
This pamphlet, like all publications of the Fabian Society, represents not the collective view of the Society, but only the view …

Virginia's Reactions To John Brown's Raid On Harper's Ferry, October 16-18, 1859, Linda Mcintosh
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is show Virginia's reactions to John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry, not to John Brown, the man. For this reason the writer will being with a brief identification of John Brown, followed by a statement of his purpose in invading Harper's Ferry and a description of the raid itself. The rest of the paper will be devoted to Virginia's reactions to the invasion. No attention will be given to the proceedings of Brown's trail, the question his sanity, or reactions to Brown's execution. Information on these topics may obtained from either Stephen Oates's To Purge …
The Sacheverell Affair : Its Causes And Implications, Robert A. Kester
The Sacheverell Affair : Its Causes And Implications, Robert A. Kester
Honors Theses
The Sacheverell Affair of 1709-10 is a much overlooked event in English history. It was not significant in itself, being a rather trivial incident, but was significant for its far-reaching implications, in terms of its impact on both the political situation in Britain and diplomacy on the continent.
Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day
Edward Vii And The Anglo-French Entente Of 1904, Patricia M. Day
Honors Theses
After the end of the Napoleonic wars, the appearance of Europe was changed almost to that of the eighteenth century. France had been returned to her old borders, the multitude of little kingdoms in Italy and Germany had been reinstated, and Russia had taken back the portion of Poland that she had acquired in 1793. The general alliance of all European countries against a superior France was discontinued as soon as France had lost that position. It had been nothing more than one of the agreements that European countries made when they were under pressure. The enemy was only the …
Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas
Shaw's Comic Tone : From Laughter To The Broken Harp String, R. K. Thomas
Honors Theses
George Bernard Shaw's literary career lasted over seventy years. He wrote prolifically. The most complete collection of his work, the Ayot St. Lawrence Edition, runs to over thirty-one volume, yet it is not all inclusive. His efforts were always motivated by the desire to expand and expound his social and political philosophy. Although the canon of Shavian criticism approaches his motives from a wide of variety of angles and avenues, Shaw singled out "passion of pure political Weltverbesserungwahn (worldbettermentcrase)" as his "own devouring malady." Defining his artistic objectives as conveying a "feeling" to an audience and making "them sympathetic with …
The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning
The Rise And Fall Of The Farmers' Alliance Of Virginia, Nancy Byrd Manning
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to trace the quick rise and
equally sudden fall of the Virginia State Farmers' Alliance. Emphasis
was given to the unique socio-economic conditions prevalent in Southern
Virginia during the latter part of the nineteenth century which forced
individual farmers into cooperation, and to the vacillating political
situation which precipitated the death of the Virginia Farmers' Alliance.
The structures and activities of the Alliance received particular attention
because they were extremely important in attracting and maintaining
membership.
"The Beau Ideal Of A Soldier" : Brigadier General Charles Dimmock, Eugene M. Sanchez-Saavedra
"The Beau Ideal Of A Soldier" : Brigadier General Charles Dimmock, Eugene M. Sanchez-Saavedra
Honors Theses
Charles Dimmock (1800-1863), the subject of this biography, played "many parts" in his lifetime; Soldier, Educator, Hero, Businessman, Engineer, Promoter, Family man and Civil Servant. A northerner by birth, Dimmock adopted the state of Virginia as his mistress and place of residence and he devoted the last twenty years of his life to the state's military and civil development.
With Richmond, Virginia, in the 1840's and 50's, as his stage, Dimmock, who was certainly the hero of his own biography, worked with an astonishing variety of supporting players, ranging from the top civil and military leaders in America to the …
Senator William E. Borah's Dry Campaign : Its Effect On The Presidential Election Of 1928, Emily White Zehmer
Senator William E. Borah's Dry Campaign : Its Effect On The Presidential Election Of 1928, Emily White Zehmer
Honors Theses
Like many of its predecessors, the campaign for the Presidency of the United States in 1928 began months before candidates were nominated and ballots were cast. The Republican Party found itself without a candidate when President Coolidge announced late in the summer of 1927 that he would not seek re-election in the following year. There was a slight scramble within Republican ranks for the nomination. Among those considered were Senator Charles G. Curtis of Kansas, majority floor leader, who subsequently was elected Vice-President; Senator William E. Borah, the Idaho Progressive whose role in the campaign is explored herein; Dr. Nicholas …
The Southern Attitude Towards Texas, 1844-1846, Kenneth H. Clevenger
The Southern Attitude Towards Texas, 1844-1846, Kenneth H. Clevenger
Honors Theses
The purpose of this paper is to study the Southern attitude towards Texas between 1844 and 1846. To understand the range of Southern opinions it is necessary to realize that Texas was a political issue in national affairs at this time, and national politics were extremely fractious during this era. Both Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun had a hand in the in the controversy as did the lesser luminaries of the day, Presidents John Tyler, James K. Polk and Martin Van Buren. Because some national overview is vital for a proper perspective on the problem, the first section of …
The Case Of Margery Kempe, Mary Marshall Taylor
The Case Of Margery Kempe, Mary Marshall Taylor
Honors Theses
There are few today who would consider Margery Kempe as an individual displaying characteristics of a normal, well-adjusted person. As a woman and representative of her era, Margery is atypical. In W. A. Pantin's words: "Margery was of course abnormal in several ways, but she was an abnormal specimen of what was a large and familiar class of devout lay people...," one whose spiritual experiences were realized in the fifteenth century, but who is a fourteenth-century product. As a mystic, David Knowles evaluates her as the "less highly respectable Margery Kempe." Among her townsmen her identity is not especially clear, …
Richmond's Reaction To The Depression Of 1837, Barbara Cahoon
Richmond's Reaction To The Depression Of 1837, Barbara Cahoon
Honors Theses
Depressions affect people and institutions in a variety of ways, from leveling the wealth until a recovery is impossible to showing the weaknesses inherent in the system, thus enabling workable solutions to be a result. The economic emergency of 1837 was such a phenomenon. Much has been written about its effects on a national and state level, but localities have been slighted. All do not necessarily react the same, and consequently the aim of this paper is to show Richmond’s particular response to her poor market conditions, and the political developments of the havoc that occurred from 1837-1842.
The bulk …
