The Misinterpretation Of “Corporation” In Indonesia’S Penal Code No. 1 Of 2023: Ensuring Legal Certainty For Recognized Corporate Forms, Rizaldy Alif Syahrial Aug 2026

The Misinterpretation Of “Corporation” In Indonesia’S Penal Code No. 1 Of 2023: Ensuring Legal Certainty For Recognized Corporate Forms, Rizaldy Alif Syahrial

Indonesia Law Review

Abstract

Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Indonesian Penal Code expands criminal liability to include entities that do not possess legal personality, allowing informal entities such as commanditaire vennootschappen (CV), partnerships (firm), unincorporated business groups, and unregistered associations to be prosecuted as corporations. This expansion aims to close legal loopholes in addressing modern criminal activity and to align Indonesia with global developments in corporate criminal liability. However, extending criminal liability to non legal persons generates conceptual tension because Indonesian legal doctrine distinguishes between natural persons and legal persons, which possess legal personality, decision making organs, separate assets, and autonomous …

A Practical Guide To Science Writing & Publishing, Ryan W. Mcewan Aug 2026

A Practical Guide To Science Writing & Publishing, Ryan W. Mcewan

Department of Biology Open Educational Resources

This document contains advice that I developed for students working in my research lab and represents an approach to science writing that is in some ways very basic, and in others, quite idiosyncratic.

Writing is a creative process and as you advance as a science writer you will get stronger, and stronger, and you will develop your own process. At some point, someone might give you different advice about science writing than what you find here. If you join a research lab your PI might have their own program. You should absorb all of the good advice you can find. …

At Risk Students: Ensuring A Successful Transition Into High School, Angela Espada Aug 2026

At Risk Students: Ensuring A Successful Transition Into High School, Angela Espada

Education Theses and Dissertations

This Improvement Science Dissertation in Practice concentrated on the persistent problem of freshman course failure at a large, diverse, Title I high school serving a military-connected community in Central Texas. Although intervention programs existed, an increasing number of ninth-grade students were consistently failing one or more courses during their first year of high school, which revealed several gaps in the campus’s system of support. The Improvement Science framework and two Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles were used to examine the factors contributing to freshman course failure and to assess the interventions implemented to improve academic success as students transitioned into high school. …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Aquaculture is increasingly important for food, nutrition and livelihoods in Kenya, but the sector still faces persistent constraints in extension delivery, farmer learning, input access, market coordination and information reliability. This review examines how social media and related digital communication tools are shaping aquaculture development in Kenya, with attention to impacts, challenges, governance needs and strategic directions. A systematic literature review of studies and institutional sources published between 2015 and 2025 was conducted. The search identified 388 records, of which 45 sources were included in the final synthesis after screening, eligibility assessment and quality appraisal. Because the evidence was heterogeneous, …

De-Centering And Re-Centering Digital Scholarship, Ten Years On, Matthew Hunter, Aaron Retteen, Micah Vandegrift

Faculty Scholarship

Ten years after the publication of a manifesto attempting to describe what digital scholarship could do for and within libraries, some of the original authors reflect on the progress of the call-to-action. This article describes areas in which the integration of digital scholarship activities as core parts of librarianship has and has not become commonplace and traces larger-scale developments in the academy and global knowledge landscape that have contributed to the accuracy of the predictions made in 2017.

Law Enforcement With Rent Dissipation, Murat C. Mungan, J. Shahar Dillbary Aug 2026

Law Enforcement With Rent Dissipation, Murat C. Mungan, J. Shahar Dillbary

Faculty Scholarship

We consider a framework which brings together losses arising from rent-dissipation and the workhorse model of law enforcement. Governmental actors engage in a contest to share the proceeds from the enforcement of the law through monetary fines, which leads to rent-dissipation. This causes monetary sanctions to be costly, rendering the model used for studying nonmonetary sanctions a better fit for their analysis. The effect of rent-dissipation on optimal sanctions is directly related to the sanction elasticity of offenses measured at the classic optimum (i.e., where the expected sanction equals the direct harm from the offense). When offenses are inelastic, the …

Constitutional Drafting Processes And Constitutional Success, Adam Chilton, Murat C. Mungan, Mila Versteeg Aug 2026

Constitutional Drafting Processes And Constitutional Success, Adam Chilton, Murat C. Mungan, Mila Versteeg

Faculty Scholarship

Several recent constitution-making processes have been celebrated for being participatory, inclusive, and representative. However, many of these processes also failed. We theorize that aspects of these kinds of constitutional drafting processes could reduce the probability of constitutional success. To show why, we construct a “Constitution Drafting game” (CD game) in which representatives from different interest groups must draft a constitution. We consider the case where the probability of constitutional success is single peaked, but the value from successful adoption is increasing in the degree of issue protection chosen. The drafting process then leads to protection choices that are above those …

An Integrated Model For Post-Hurricane Displacement, Shelter Demand And Shelter Allocation, Nirmal Adhikari Aug 2026

An Integrated Model For Post-Hurricane Displacement, Shelter Demand And Shelter Allocation, Nirmal Adhikari

All Theses

This thesis develops an integrated tract-level framework for estimating post-hurricane displacement, short-term shelter demand, long-term shelter demand, and shelter allocation under hurricane wind hazards. The framework combines parametric wind-field modeling based on HURDAT2 and EBTRK hurricane data with HAZUS-based fragility and loss functions, uninhabitability relationships, demographic factors, and an insurance-sensitive recovery model. Tract-level insurance adequacy is estimated using American Community Survey data, National Association of Insurance Commissioners premium data, and the National Risk Index, using five scenario-based models; the combined home-value and hazard-risk model is adopted for final analyses. To evaluate post-disaster housing capacity, the study estimates the number of …

History, Myth, Courage, And Selflessness: Kate Shelley And The Bridge Of Darkness, Stephen M. Jennings Aug 2026

History, Myth, Courage, And Selflessness: Kate Shelley And The Bridge Of Darkness, Stephen M. Jennings

All Theses

This thesis documents the research, creative development, and production of the animated short film Kate Shelley and the Bridge of Darkness. The project is inspired by the historical account of Kate Shelley, a fifteen-year-old girl who in 1881 crossed a railroad bridge during a violent storm near Moingona, Iowa, to warn a nearby train station of a catastrophic bridge collapse. Over time, Shelley’s actions became both a documented historical event and a subject of mythologized retellings in American cultural memory. The film explores this tension between history and legend through an interpretation that balances historical research with cinematic storytelling. The …

Painting A Scene: 3d Painterly Rendering From Curves To Rebelle, William M. Luttrell Aug 2026

Painting A Scene: 3d Painterly Rendering From Curves To Rebelle, William M. Luttrell

All Theses

Stylized 3D rendering has seen much development and success over the past few years. From Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to The Bad Guys, many studios have developed tools to incorporate stylistic elements from graphic novels, comic books, watercolor paintings, and more into their productions. This stylization process incorporates the pacing, visual style, and themes from the source medium into the animated work, allowing a much greater freedom of expression for artists and directors.

Inspired by these films as well as the needs of the short film Kate Shelley and the Bridge of Darkness currently in production, This paper presents …

Immersive Attraction Design Using Real Time Virtual Production Techniques: A South Carolinian Ghost-Lore Dark Ride, Gabrielle M. Delo

All Theses

The role of themed entertainment can serve as a tool for cultural enrichment by integrating regional folklore into attraction design, using South Carolina’s “Gray Man” legend as the narrative foundation for a proposed dark ride. This project highlights how attractions can introduce wider audiences to lesser-known folktales while fostering appreciation for regional identity. It also examines the use of real-time virtual production, specifically using Unreal Engine 5.5, as a unified platform for previsualizing narrative-driven environments, enabling efficient iteration and integration of both physical and digital storytelling elements. This project positions game engine technology as a means of preserving and communicating …

Evaluating Drug Concentration Profiles In Wastewater To Develop A Framework For Estimating Drug User Populations, Carl Michael E. Espinosa Aug 2026

Evaluating Drug Concentration Profiles In Wastewater To Develop A Framework For Estimating Drug User Populations, Carl Michael E. Espinosa

All Theses

Chemical compounds, including licit and illicit drugs can be measured in wastewater and used to assess community drug consumption, providing valuable information for public health agencies, law enforcement, and local communities. While previous research primarily focused on estimating the per capita community drug consumption using back-calculation, this research focused on utilizing literature-derived parameters including drug dosage, renal excretion fraction, and sewer stability to develop a framework to estimate the user populations using Monte Carlo simulations. Samples were collected from two wastewater treatment facilities representing the Generostee Creek WWTP’s sewershed (GCS) and Mauldin Road WRRF’s sewershed (MRS). The target analytes included …

Investigating The Effects Of Draw Parameters On The Refractive Index Profiles Of Phosphosilicate Fibers, Brandi Baldus Aug 2026

Investigating The Effects Of Draw Parameters On The Refractive Index Profiles Of Phosphosilicate Fibers, Brandi Baldus

All Theses

P₂O₅ is a common dopant core material in silica-based glass optical fibers, in part due to its ability to increase the refractive index of silica, required for the fiber to guide light. However, P₂O₅-doped fibers can show a significant decrease in the refractive index profile compared to that of the parent preform. The question arises as to whether the refractive index decreasing could be a direct result of the fiber draw process and, if so, what is it about the draw process that causing such changes in phosphosilicate fibers. More specifically, this Thesis explores the hypothesis that these draw-induced reductions …

Analyses Of Atheroprotective Effects From Mir-33a Deletion In Primary Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Achala Pokhrel Aug 2026

Analyses Of Atheroprotective Effects From Mir-33a Deletion In Primary Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells, Achala Pokhrel

All Theses

Atherosclerosis is one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease, characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol and foam cells within the arterial walls. Foam cells were traditionally believed to originate from macrophages; however, recent studies have shown vascular smooth muscle cells are also capable of accumulating cholesterol and developing foam-cell-like characteristics. ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) plays an important role in removing excess cholesterol from cells by transporting intracellular cholesterol to circulatory apolipoprotein A-I (apoAI). MicroRNA-33a (miR-33a) is known to suppress ABCA1 expression and limit cholesterol efflux. However, its role in primary aortic smooth muscle cells is unknown and not …

Evaluating Pfas And Marine Microbial Interactions In Estuarine Sediments With Varying Urbanization And Assessments Of Microbial Responses To Pfos, Zachary J. Padgett Aug 2026

Evaluating Pfas And Marine Microbial Interactions In Estuarine Sediments With Varying Urbanization And Assessments Of Microbial Responses To Pfos, Zachary J. Padgett

All Theses

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse class of synthetic chemicals that have become globally distributed due to their extensive use in industrial and consumer products and their extraordinary resistance to environmental degradation. Their persistence and documented toxicity have made them a growing concern in coastal environments, particularly in estuaries where urban runoff, wastewater, and industrial discharges concentrate these compounds. Estuaries are unique in that tidal mixing and interactions with fine-grained sediments and organic matter promote PFAS retention, while the microbial communities living directly within estuarine sediments are positioned where PFAS preferentially accumulate, creating conditions for prolonged exposure and …

Can Employees Report Stress-Related Problems Without Repercussions? Understanding The Determinants Of Stress Stigma, Kristieona L. Epting Aug 2026

Can Employees Report Stress-Related Problems Without Repercussions? Understanding The Determinants Of Stress Stigma, Kristieona L. Epting

All Theses

Few studies examine the stigma associated with reporting stress-related work concerns, or stress stigma. When employees refrain from communicating their experience of stressors due to the worry of negative repercussions, leaders become unable to gain full insight into the organizational factors causing stress. Learning more about employees’ reluctance to communicate stress concerns can help companies identify workplace stressors. Additionally, prior research has shown that an individual's core self-evaluation (i.e., fundamental evaluation of self) influences how they interpret and react to environmental situations. Individuals with higher levels of CSE may experience fewer adverse consequences from unfavorable job characteristics than a person …

Habitat Associations Of Small Mammals And Their Role As Sentinels For Biodiversity In The Southern Blue Ridge, Katelyn Steen Aug 2026

Habitat Associations Of Small Mammals And Their Role As Sentinels For Biodiversity In The Southern Blue Ridge, Katelyn Steen

All Theses

Small mammals play important roles in healthy forests, but we still know very little about many of the rare and state-listed species living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina. Traditional surveys are expensive and time-consuming, so we tested a newer, camera-based method called AHDriFT. From 2024 to 2026, we set up 60 camera systems across high-elevation forests to track six state-listed species: the Carolina red-backed vole, woodland jumping mouse, eastern woodrat, masked shrew, pygmy shrew, and eastern spotted skunk. We detected all six target species and conducted occupancy modeling for four. We found spotted skunk occupancy increased near …

Understanding The Potential Sources Of Bacteria And Turbidity Pollution In The Edisto Island Watershed, Brynne Sumner Aug 2026

Understanding The Potential Sources Of Bacteria And Turbidity Pollution In The Edisto Island Watershed, Brynne Sumner

All Theses

Anthropogenic pollution introduces contaminants, such as pathogenic bacteria and turbidity, into coastal watersheds. These contaminants are the major contributors to water quality impairments in the three sub-watersheds encompassing Edisto Island and the Town of Edisto Beach (hereafter referred to as the Edisto Island Watershed), located within the ACE Basin, South Carolina, USA. With 18 locations impaired for fecal bacteria and 19 for turbidity on the 2024 South Carolina 303(d) list of impaired waters, the Edisto Island Watershed offers valuable insights into the water quality challenges rural coastal communities face.

This study aimed to identify the sources of fecal bacteria and …
