Out Of Control: An Exploration Into The Dynamics Of Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia And The Consequences For The Sufferer And Those Around Her, Shenandoah M. Cardwell

Honors Theses

A theoretical and personal exploration into the dynamics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia was conducted with reviews of literature, interviews, and personal accounts. A basic definition of the problem according to the DSM-III was stated. Discussed in detail are factors which contribute to a possible predisposition for developing an eating disorder; these include the physiological/biological, psychological, familial and societal. The effects of eating disorders on those persons around an anorexic or bulimic were explained along with a special section emphasizing the epidemic of eating disorders on college campuses. Emphasis was placed on the importance of the role of helper in …

The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana) Berry Juice, Steven R. Parris Mar 1987

The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana) Berry Juice, Steven R. Parris

Honors Theses

This paper is divided into three major sections. The first section is a limited overview of the field of allelopathy, from its origins to its potential future. Since the field of allelopathy is relatively young and there are only a very few texts on allelopathy available, much of this information is taken directly from journal articles. The second section reviews the publications concerning Phytolacca americana (pokeweed) and some of its close relatives, as well as information on a number of interesting and potentially useful compounds that have been isolated from them. The third section describes a series of laboratory experiments …

The Cultural Significance Of Religious Festivals Of Seville: Holy Week And The Romeria Of Rocio, Brent Metz Aug 1986

The Cultural Significance Of Religious Festivals Of Seville: Holy Week And The Romeria Of Rocio, Brent Metz

Honors Theses

This project began long before I traveled to Spain. With the guidance of Dr. Smith, I wrote preliminary questionnaires and learned research methods and interviewing techniques in the fall, 1985. He also assisted me in writing a research proposal for the Waldo-Sangren Scholarship, and this award made my trip to Spain possible. In addition, I collected books and other information from Western's Waldo Library and from professors and friends who had previously been in Spain. Although I later modified my questionnaires and changed my conception of religious festivals in Seville, my preparation last fall was critical in orienting myself to …

Radicalism In Literature: Proletarian Fiction Of The 1930s, Susan Maxwell May 1986

Radicalism In Literature: Proletarian Fiction Of The 1930s, Susan Maxwell

Honors Theses

In a study of working class literature from the 1930s, I would contend that the most radical work was produced primarily by female writers. For the most part, this radicalism owed to the subordination and the victimization of women in society. Since all of the writers that were studied (Tillie Olsen, Meridel Le Sueur, Fielding Burke, Agnes Smedley, Erskine Caldwell, Michael Gold, Jack Conroy, and Floyd Dell) were at least involved with, if not members of, the Communist Party, this makes a fascinating study into the power of a philosophy of government on the individual. Not only was the individual …

Kate Chopin : A Different Look, Kimberly Ann Francis Apr 1986

Kate Chopin : A Different Look, Kimberly Ann Francis

Honors Theses

Kate Chopin? Who is she? This is a common resonse of many people who are not familiar with this outstanding woman writer of the late 1800's and early 1900's. In fact, this same question would more likely have gone unanswered then than today. For the most part, many of her contemporaries are prominently discussed and read today because they enjoyed popularity while they were alive. They not only established literary voges; in many cases they gave the public what it wanted to read. Such writers include Mark Twain and Stephen Crane as well as Edith Wharton and Ellen Glasgow. Kate …

Gerard Manley Hopkins: The Struggle For Poetic Vision, Kathryn M. Fessler Apr 1986

Gerard Manley Hopkins: The Struggle For Poetic Vision, Kathryn M. Fessler

Honors Theses

In this study, I will trace the developmetn and history of Hopkins' struggle to realize and live by a vision of an immanent God, using as the gauge of his progress the poems, which are the celarest expressions of Hopkins' heart. I will illustrate the chronological progression of this vision in the poetry, and discuss specific poems in terms of their places in the history of Hopkins' life as a poet and a priest. I will also pay some degree of attention to linguistic innovations in the poetry, since these are manifestations of Hopkins' liberation from certain formal constraints made …

Truth Lifting Up Its Head Above Scandals : The New Law Of Righteousness Proposed By Gerrard Winstanley And The Diggers, John Cook Apr 1986

Truth Lifting Up Its Head Above Scandals : The New Law Of Righteousness Proposed By Gerrard Winstanley And The Diggers, John Cook

Honors Theses

In the beginning of 1649 a group of landless people began to build houses and plant crops on the common lands at George Hill in Surrey, England. However these were not ordinary squatters for the Diggers also had a program which declared "freedom to the creation, and that the earth must be set free of the entanglements of lords and landlords, and that it shall become a common treasury to all, as it was first made and given" to men by God. (p.128) Sometime just before this the Diggers' leading spokesman, Gerrard Winstanley, had begun to claim "that many things …

Third, two questionnaires are developed and tested for use by the attractions.

Lynchings In The Bible Belt South: A Study Of Mobs And Ministers, Margaret S. Jackson Nov 1985

Lynchings In The Bible Belt South: A Study Of Mobs And Ministers, Margaret S. Jackson

Honors Theses

String him up! That command stirred a deadly chill in the hearts of hundreds of lynching victims and aroused violent emotion in the souls of countless bloodthirsty mobs throughout the Bible Belt South during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The South had su survived the Civil War physically, but the wound to its pride was so deep that more than Reconstruction was needed to heal the scar. The South had fought the North to preserve its unique way of life. Following the war Southerners fought each other in frustration and anger to protect their last hold on the …

Political Ethics And Responsibility : The Role Of The Elected Official, Janet M. Muller May 1985

Political Ethics And Responsibility : The Role Of The Elected Official, Janet M. Muller

Honors Theses

The word "politician" may, in today's society, bring with it some very bad connotations. Most people view politicians and elected officials as coniving scoundrels, shady characters, and power hungry villains. It may be true that some politicians are all of the above and more, but many of the office holders who run our legislatures and other branches of government are concerned with what is ethically and morally correct behavior in the political arena.

Unfortunately, the role of the elected public official is not always clear cut. For example, there is no universally acceptable definition of the duty of being a …

Community Adaptation In The Judeo-Christian Tradition, John K. Overton Apr 1985

Community Adaptation In The Judeo-Christian Tradition, John K. Overton

Honors Theses

Pesach represents the pivotal event in Jewish history to many, but its historical development bristles even more intensely and significantly than is often acknowledged. Its origins reach behind the Exodus event into pastoral cultures, behind the values of modern Jewry, behind the sensibilities of ancient Yahwism. Its understanding has been creatively synthesized, assimilated, digested and shaped within the culture of the Hebrews and then within the culture of the Jews, but this is all based on a historical victory. Cultural assimilation, military rebellion, and a consolidating expression after rebellion are all present.

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford Apr 1985

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford

Honors Theses

The pastoral, whether in painting, music, literature, or film, has always attempted to capture that fleeting moment in history, real or unreal, where man is autonomous. The pastoral life occurs only after man has gained a considerable amount of control over nature and before he has found himself controlled by his fellow man or by those common evils made real and specific by civilization. In other words, the pastoral tries to capture or create that period in history where man has conquered the wilderness in some major way, usually by farming or animal herding, but has not yet become involved …

An Analysis Of The Significance Of Systemic Power In Chattanooga Decision Making, Franklin Chancey Mar 1985

An Analysis Of The Significance Of Systemic Power In Chattanooga Decision Making, Franklin Chancey

Honors Theses

At the end of the Civil War, Chattanooga, like many southern cities, was beset by a wave of northern citizens eager to help rebuild the ravaged south. These carpetbaggers, the forebearers of some of Chattanooga's wealthiest families, began many important industries still in operation today. In fact, for most Chattanoogans, the names Probasco, Lupton, Guerry, and others are synonymous with great wealth. The members of this group, the descendants of those reconstruction era carpetbaggers, are at the top of Chattanooga's socioeconomic structure. If newspaper surveys are correct, this group is perceived by the public as running the city's affairs. Two …

A Continuous Distillation Operation At The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, David H. Cummins Mar 1985

A Continuous Distillation Operation At The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, David H. Cummins

Honors Theses

This paper describes the work done on the design, construction, monitoring, and control of a distillation column. This work was done as a Departmental Honors Project in the School of Engineering at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The column has been completed and the various tests performed with the column have produced satisfactory results. The column parameters are monitored and controlled by automatic controllers with manually adjusted set points. In addition to this, micro-computer based control for the column has been designed, however implementation of this control has not yet been achieved.

The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine Jan 1985

The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine

Honors Theses

In the course of English history many legal courts have been established and abolished. There were two types of legal courts: common law and prerogative. Commonlaw courts had their basis in fmndamental laws and custom while pre- rogative courts were established by the king's prerogative for different reasons. Most of the prerogative courts were developed during the medieval or early modern period and were abolished during the Stuart reign. One such prerogative court was the Court of the Star Chamber. It can trace its beginnings to the medieval period and was abolished during the reign of Charles I. The Court …

A Quantitative Study Of The Distinctive Proteins Of The Eosinophil: A Comparison Of Normals And Eosinophilic Patients, James M. Olson Dec 1984

A Quantitative Study Of The Distinctive Proteins Of The Eosinophil: A Comparison Of Normals And Eosinophilic Patients, James M. Olson

Honors Theses

Eosinophils have long been associated with parasitic and allergic diseases. Methods of procurement and purification of eosinophils in the last ten years have allowed intensive investigation into their components, properties, functions, and mechanisms (Gleich et al, 1982). The goals of this project are to separate eosinophils in blood samples taken from patients with eosinophilia and from normals based on density over distontinuous Metrizamide gradients; to determine quantitatively the levels of the three distinctive proteins of the eosinophil, specifically MBP, EDN, and ECP; and to compare the levels of these proteins found in eosinophils of patients with eosinophilia to the amounts …

Design Principles And Applications In A Corporate Trademark The Krystal Company, Kurt Hyder Mar 1984

Design Principles And Applications In A Corporate Trademark The Krystal Company, Kurt Hyder

Honors Theses

This Honors thesis sets out to examine some significant aspects of corporate trademark design. The thesis will provide an analysis of a corporate trademark program, focusing on the recent trademark change by The Krystal Company. I wish to point out early in the paper that certain features of Krystal's design program, such as uniform, package, and architectural design were reviewed only briefly. This restriction was necessary to keep the research from becoming too vast and losing sight of the main objective of trademark design. The thesis consists of three main parts: a) The principles of design and graphic design, b) …

Wood Anatomy And Relationships Of Neowawraea (Euphorbiaceae), Dörthe S. Brandt, W. John Hayden Jan 1984

Wood Anatomy And Relationships Of Neowawraea (Euphorbiaceae), Dörthe S. Brandt, W. John Hayden

Honors Theses

Wood anatomy of three specimens of Neowawraea phyllanthoides Rock, a rare and endangered member of Euphorbiaceae endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, is described and compared with woods of other genera of subfamily Phyllanthoideae. Neowawraeahas often been associated or synonymized with Drypetes Vahl. Wood of Neowawraea is diffuse porous, perforation plates are simple, imperforate tracheary elements are thin-walled septate fiber-tracheids, rays are heterocellular and crystalliferous, and axial xylem parenchyma is restricted to a few scanty paratracheal and terminal cells. In several respects these results differ from earlier published descriptions of the wood of this taxon; these earlier descriptions are shown …

American Athletics And The Law : The Sports Triangle, Brian M. Sheahan Apr 1983

American Athletics And The Law : The Sports Triangle, Brian M. Sheahan

Honors Theses

Colleges and universities regularly award scholarships to outstanding young athletes. The standard financial aid agreement between the institution and the athlete is that in return for the athlete's active participation in the particular sport, he or she receives free tuition, room, board and books.

In addition to the education and athletic involvements, the giving of financial aid has numerous implications on the relationship between the college or university and the athlete. Foremost among those implications is the potential legal entanglement under the law of workmen's compensation.

The major questions which are in front of the courts today in conjunction with …

Poignant Quotations And The Thematic Structures In Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, Edward D. Sturms Apr 1983

Poignant Quotations And The Thematic Structures In Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, Edward D. Sturms

Honors Theses

A study of Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony cannot be begun without introduction. Too many extra musical experiences in Mahler's life need to be explored before a study of the music is undertaken. His life, especially the two years before his death, was like a whirlwind of problematic experiences. It is impossible to say exactly which of these experiences affected the Ninth but it is certain that many of them did. In tracing the line from birth to death one sees the inner turmoil that Mahler brought into this last completed Symphony. Deryck Cooke places Mahler with such men of vision …

The Search For Origins: Some Contemporary Views On Poetry And Possibility, David Franke Mar 1983

The Search For Origins: Some Contemporary Views On Poetry And Possibility, David Franke

Honors Theses

Too often it is the habit of critics to create a realm of philosophy that removes itself from the very subject which it aims to clarify or refine. This paper attempts to avoid that mistake by grounding the philosophical ideas explicated in the first section of the paper in practical applications to the poetry of Mark Strand, A.R. Ammons and others. Briefly, the beginning sets up an idealogical framework that focuses on the poet's introspective search for the origins of his art. Drawing heavily on the criticism of Maurice Blanchot, the phenomonological philosophy of Martin Heidegger , and the philosophical …

The Value Of Subliminal Advertising To The Modern Marketer, Bruce Peckover Feb 1983

The Value Of Subliminal Advertising To The Modern Marketer, Bruce Peckover

Honors Theses

This paper provides an evaluation of the arguments and evidence advanced supporting and denying the effectiveness of various subliminal techniques used in advertising. These practices supposedly influence consumer behavior by subconsciously altering attitudes or preferences toward products. While researchers offer some marginal evidence of subliminal stimuli influencing like/dislike reactions, the marketing relevance of the evidence remains to be documented. This investigation examines the history, use, legality, and value of subliminal advertising to the marketer. A thorough discussion of each of these points is made with reference to documented sources. The intent of this paper is not to deny the existence …

Impact Of The 1980 Election On Ideological Liberal Organizations, Michael Coval Jan 1983

Impact Of The 1980 Election On Ideological Liberal Organizations, Michael Coval

Honors Theses

Throughout this section, I sought to establish a nexus between interest group theory and empirical observations. This in turn, would provide the framework from which I would set forth a series of hypotheses concerning the impact of the deviating 1980 elections on ideological liberal organizations. What I found in fact, was not just a link but a near perfect correlation between theory and practice, each reinforcing the other and pointing to the same ineluctable conclusion: The upshot of the Reagan/New Right landslide of 1980 was a dramatic renaissance of American liberalism. A renaissance so pervasive that ideological liberal organizations stand …

The French Revolution : A Comparison Of The Attitudes Of Edmund Burke And Thomas Paine, Christine R. Chaires Apr 1982

The French Revolution : A Comparison Of The Attitudes Of Edmund Burke And Thomas Paine, Christine R. Chaires

Honors Theses

By 1789, when the French people were just becoming absorbed in revolutionary activity, both the United States and Britain already enjoyed relatively stable political systems which asserted fundamental rights of each individual and established a protection of these rights against moral and political infringement. To insure the perpetuation of these 'inalienable' rights, revolutionary Americans fought violently to break the oppressive bonds of a tyrannical monarch. The English, in 1688, more conservatively chose to build upon their existing modes of government. Because the French Revolution sought to abolish many principles on which the British government rested, it would seem logical for …

Concept Formation And Development In The Congenitally Blind Child, Kimberly J. Franco Apr 1982

Concept Formation And Development In The Congenitally Blind Child, Kimberly J. Franco

Honors Theses

T.D. Cutsforth once stated that "no single mental activity of the congenitally blind child is not distorted by the absence of sight." Blindness permeates the intellectual functioning of language, thought, comprehension and conceptualization. Ultimately, the child lacking vision will both understand and respond to the world in a manner unlike that of a sighted child. This incongruous interaction breeds frustration since the blind are a minority in a world which concentrates on the characteristics, needs, behaviors, and accomplishments of sighted individuals. Lacking the visual modality, the blind rely on the information about the objective world which they receive from people …

The Attitudes Of Illinois Petroleum Jobbers About The Marketing Of Propane, Dale E. Houston Apr 1982

The Attitudes Of Illinois Petroleum Jobbers About The Marketing Of Propane, Dale E. Houston

Honors Theses

The study considers several hypotheses: the percentage of Illinois petroleum jobbers marketing propane will increase due to the fact that propane sales increase profitability, the Illinois propane market is expanding because it is less expensive than gasoline, fuel oil sales are decreasing because propane furnace installation is cheaper than oil furnaces, and propane furnaces are less expensive to maintain and operate.

The Application Of The Kodaly Method To Instrumental Music Education, Sherry Black Jan 1982

The Application Of The Kodaly Method To Instrumental Music Education, Sherry Black

Honors Theses

Music educator have constantly searched for more effective ways to teach their subject. In the past thirty years, several philosophies and methods of music education have had considerable influence on the music curricula in American schools. An examination of one one of these methods, the Kodaly method, will be the focus of this paper. Zoltan Kodaly, a Hungarian composer and educator, believed that the voice was nature's first instrument and that only though its correct utilization could a child develop correctly in all other aspects of music. The history, goals and techniques of Kodaly's method will be outlined in the …
