The following literature review and methods focused on understanding what effect advertisements have on consumers by demonstrating past and present methods and findings. The qualitative research aimed to seek a better understanding of the ways Calvin Klein expressed sexual and image content in his jean advertisements over an 11-year time span by analyzing and evaluating 25 jean advertisements. Each advertisement was coded for type of gaze, weight, gender, hair color, age, ethnicity, and pose (see appendix A for codebook). Cortisol Responsivity: Association With Fear And Pain Related To Root Canal Therapy., Lori L. Gochenour

Salivary cortisol levels were evaluated along with fear and pain ratings at three points during root canal therapy to determine whether informational videotapes could affect responsivity. Sixty-three emergency and routine root canal patients participated. Informed consent first was obtained and salivary samples collected. Individuals were then asked to rate fear and pain based on a numeric rating scale. This procedure was repeated after cleaning and shaping the root canal system and at the conclusion of treatment. Results indicated that root canal therapy increased cortisol levels regardless of the type of videotape. Pain increased during the procedure, but then declined markedly …

The purpose of this study was to use a qualitative as well as quantitative approach to examining the sexual content, messages and images in Seventeen from 1990-2000, while applying the results to compare how it affects the relationship between the seductive gaze used in the advertisements in Seventeen and the self-worth of its audience. Qualitatively, 52 advertisements from the prom issues in Seventeen were analyzed. How the advertisements influenced the sexual attitudes and behaviors of female adolescents over a 10-year period was observed. The Relationship Between Dietary Intake And Blood Lead Levels Among Wic Infants In Rural West Virginia., Norma Penuela

The purpose of this study was to quantify the relationship between BLL and dietary intake in rural WV infants. Forty-seven infants, (6-24 months) were recruited. The mean BLL was 2.9 ± 1.6 mcg/dL. The relationship between blood lead levels and dietary intake was analyzed using stepwise regression procedure. BLL were positively associated with protein intake (p= 0.003) and negatively associated with vitamin E and phosphorus (p = 0.009 and 0.006 respectively). No other significant association was found. Results from T-test did not demonstrate any significant difference in mean BLL between subjects with iron deficiency compared with those with normal iron …

Dopaminergic agonists such as L-dopa may improve visual sensitivity in subjects with abnormal vision, and possibly in subjects with normal vision. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of L-dopa on the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) psychophysically and physiologically in 14 healthy subjects. Subjects received either 250mg L-dopa/25mg Carbidopa or placebo. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and perceptual performance data was collected while subjects viewed stimuli over a range of spatial frequencies, at threshold (barely visible) contrast. The results suggest that contrast sensitivity did not significantly improve after L-dopa administration, and stimulus induced neural activation in visual …

A preliminary stream network assessment of impacts due to surface mining and reclamation was conducted through completion of this study. Four study areas, located approximately 7 to 10 km west of Morgantown, West Virginia, are within a 2.5 km radius of each other, and therefore share the same climate and geology. Two data sets were created: pre-mining and post-reclamation. The first data set was generated using premining topography, as shown on permit maps of each mined area, and Lubowe’s (1964) rules for mapping stream channel networks using topographic maps. The purpose of this study is to determine the associations of recreation and leisure with community satisfaction. The quantity, quality, and social context of participation in recreation and leisure activities are examined as potential predictors of community satisfaction. Questionnaires were distributed to a systematic random sample of residents in Montgomery, West Virginia. Following a multiple stepwise regression analysis, findings indicate that quantity (frequency) of leisure participation and quality (satisfaction) with recreation and leisure are predictors of community satisfaction. Pearsonís Correlation Coefficients indicate that frequency of volunteering and working in the yard are most strongly related with community satisfaction. The results …

The purpose of this in vitro study is to compare the resistance to demineralization between a self etching primer (SEP) and a conventional sealant. 120 tooth samples were assigned to 3 groups: SEP, Sealant, or a Control group with no treatment. After 48 or 72 hours of acidic challenge with ten Cateís solution, 200 µm sections were evaluated for the incidence of lesion, lesion depth, area and total fluorescence using confocal microscopy. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in soft tissue profiles using the Andrews and Ricketts diagnoses, as judged by professionals and laypersons. 25 patients were selected from the WVU Department of Orthodontics. Quick Ceph ProTM software was used to create simulated profiles according to the Andrews and Ricketts diagnoses. Profiles were rated at Time 1 and Time 2 by each group. A variety of extracellular signals are transmitted into the cell interior by interactions with a superfamily of heptahelical cell surface receptors. Heterotrimeric G proteins mediate the signal transduction by coupling these receptors to intracellular effector proteins. The molecular mechanisms in G protein-receptor coupling processes are still not completely understood. The tensile ties and compressive struts serve as truss members connected by nodal zones. Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental concern in many regions worldwide, but especially in coal and metal mining regions. These acid drainages are often treated with chemicals to raise the pH of the water and to cause neutralization and precipitation of metals. As neutralization occurs, a looser gelatinous material called "floc" is produced. The effects of neutralizing chemical, pH, sulfate to iron molar ratio, and solids concentration on floc settling properties were determined in synthetic acid mine drainage. Sulfate was the important factor affecting floc physicochemical properties, increasing settling times from 25-125% and decreasing settling rates from 24-63%. Neutralization …

The present study sought to examine relations between different stages of adolescent cigarette smoking and the variables of impulsivity (delay and probability discounting) and peer friend smoking behavior. Participants were 75 adolescents (40 females) between 14 and 16 years of age. Damage is often seen as an important consideration when conducting partial harvests in hardwood stands, as excessive damage to residual trees will significantly reduce the potential value of the residual stand. Damage to harvested logs, especially hardwood saw and veneer logs can be an even more important concern relative to value loss associated with log degrade. The log damage and value loss were examined by harvesting system, felling function, species, and damage type in central Appalachia. The aerodynamic drag of a racing-class motorcycle can be accomplished through either an overall redesign of the surfaces or through some type of flow control mechanism. Due to limitations on the size of the exterior shape the flow control techniques are more practical. Small metal vanes, known as vortex generators were used in this research to mix higher energy freestream air with the lower energy boundary layer, delaying boundary layer growth and separation. The research focuses on the evaluation of mechanical properties (tension, bending, compression, impact, hardness and creep) of recycled acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) thermoplastics obtained as electronic shredder residue (ESR) from computer housings. Three forms of polymers, i.e., virgin, blend of virgin and recycled, and 100% recycled were investigated to establish their long term mechanical properties. Chopped and continuous glass fiber/fabric addition to the resins was evaluated to study the thermo-mechanical properties.;Mechanical characterization was carried out at freeze-thaw cycling aging. This is not a theoretical model; it uses an empirically determined gas emission rate as an input. Protective concrete deck overlays have been successfully used by WVDOH in a number of old and new concrete bridge decks to extend their service life, but in several cases delamination and failures have been observed.
