Predictors Of Physical Abuse History And Abuse Potential: An Observation Of Parenting Style In Mother-Child Dyads Referred For Child Disruptive Behavior Problems., Lisa M. Ware

This study examined the relation between parental behaviors (i.e., amount of interaction, positive behavior, aversive behavior, controlling behavior), child abuse potential (as measured by the Child Abuse Potential Inventory), documented history of child physical abuse, and demographic variables (e.g., socioeconomic status) among mothers of children with disruptive behavior problems. Results indicated that socio-economic status and child abuse potential were significant predictors of substantiated history of abuse. Further, only the presence of a documented history of abuse was significantly related to child abuse potential scores. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Study Of Gadolinium(3+) In Single Crystals Of Yttrium Vanadate., Xinghai Zhao

Electron paramagnetic resonance has been used to study Gd3+ impurities in single crystals of yttrium vanadate (YVO4). The Gd3+ ions have a 4f7 configuration and substitute for the Y3+ ions in the YVO4 lattice. Both undoped and Gd-doped YVO4 crystals have been investigated at room temperature. The angular dependence of the Gd3+ ions was measured in the c to a plane and in the a to a plane. These data were analyzed using a spin Hamiltonian with S = 7/2. The g matrix, obtained from the angular dependence, confirms that the Gd3+ ions reflect the tetragonal symmetry of the lattice. …

Water quality variables were sampled for five years in the Baker’s Run watershed, before and during construction of a segment of Appalachian Corridor H located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. The purpose of the study was to determine if any effect from the construction could be measured and related to the cumulative change in land use and land cover. Variables sampled were turbidity, pH, conductivity, total suspend solids, alkalinity, acidity, sulfate, chloride, iron, calcium, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate, and flow. This thesis examines the interaction between the Innu of Labrador, an indigenous people in Canada, and the state since the middle twentieth century. The changing spatiality of this interaction can be understood through the analysis of the politics of scale. The scale of Innu social practices has historically been wide-ranging and fluid. Since the 1950s, the state has been increasingly involved in development projects on the lands the Innu have traditionally occupied. The state’s solution to the unwanted presence of the Innu was to settle, and therefore rescale, them in two settlements in the 1960s. The Innu’s struggle to regain …

This research is an exploration of the public relations industry and its correlation between persuasive messages and ethical responsibility. The design tested public relation firms’ websites and the content of their persuasive messages to potential clients. It applies a qualitative analysis to the top 50 Public Relations corporation’s websites homepages and systematically breaks down their persuasive messages as they apply to the industry’s code of ethics. Tree characteristics and environmental factors were evaluated to determine their effect on the health and survival of low-maturing street trees. A total of 271 trees were sampled in 13 West Virginia communities participating in the Municipal Tree Restoration Program (MTRP). Trees were assigned a crown rating on a scale of 0-7, 0 being excellent and 7 being very poor. Crown ratings were based on estimates of crown density, foliage transparency, and crown dieback percentages. Using logistic regression, a model was developed to predict the initial survival. The effects of dietary treatment, supplementation or forage only, on the induction of puberty, growth response, and fertility of 196 yearling beef heifers were investigated. Heifers were assigned to one of the two dietary treatments based on age and weight. Upon completion of the feeding trial (145d, year 1; 159d, year 2) all heifers were placed on one of three estrous synchronization protocols for timed artificial insemination and placed for one estrous cycle with a clean up bull for both years. This paper addresses the relationship between corporate sponsorship and naming rights concerning sporting venues. It is hypothesized that corporations are more positively framed in the media when granted naming rights of major sporting venues. MnxPt1-x/Co antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic (AF/F) bilayers were grown via dc magnetron sputtering at room temperature on Si(111) and glass substrates. Samples were annealed in vacuum in a 1200 Oe magnetic field at various temperatures TA after growth. The Mn concentration x was determined from the MnPt lattice parameters and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. The maximum exchange bias (HE) was observed for x ~ 0.50 in agreement with previous work. Annealing caused the MnPt to form an ordered face-centered-tetragonal CuAu ordered structure which is necessary to observe HE. X-ray reflectivity indicates that an interdiffusion region exists at the MnPt/Co interface. The interdiffusion increases with …

Geomorphology of the Presque Isle peninsula in Erie, Pennsylvania is inherently unstable. Since its initial development 3,500 years before present, long shore drift has caused the peninsula to migrate east across the Long Point-Erie moraine. Erosion on the western shoreline has breached the connection of the peninsula to the mainland 4 times in the past 200 years. The harbor, created by Presque Isle, has been paramount in the development and sustained existence of industry in Erie. This study is a longitudinal study of violence, sexual references, and drug use in popular rap music lyrics. The top ten rap songs were gathered from 1994 through 2002 and analyzed. Results indicated that though there is violence in popular rap music it is not predominate. It was also found that when violence is present it is most often without consequences or rationale. Further, it was found that popular rap music contained more sexual references than violence. Also, when sexual references were present it was gratuitously, without reference to relationships. A number of silicide-based intermetallics are currently being developed for high temperature applications (>1000°C) in advanced fossil energy combustion systems. These alloys consist typically of Mo3Si, Mo5SiB2, and a molybdenum solid solution phase. The Mo5SiB2 phase is required for oxidation resistance. The ductile molybdenum solid solution phase provides toughening. However, a fundamental limitation to their practical utilization is the requirement to maintain the desired high-temperature mechanical properties while also achieving the necessary high-temperature oxidation/hot corrosion resistance. This project examines how media framing, characterizing, and agenda setting have all played leading roles in the way Christian music, as well as Christian musicians, have been portrayed by the media. Major newspaper articles with the purpose of either previewing, or reviewing the tour of two successful Christian rock bands were analyzed. Articles of two successful secular rock bands were also analyzed in order to compare how the media characterized the band’s music. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relative success of mitigation wetlands in West Virginia in supporting vegetation, invertebrate, and wildlife communities. Eleven mitigation wetlands were compared to 4 naturally occurring reference wetlands. For all vegetation species sampled, species richness (no. species/quadrat; P = 0.035), evenness (P = 0.033), and diversity (P = 0.025) were higher in mitigation than reference wetlands. Mean weighted averages per quadrat were similar between mitigation and reference wetlands (P = 0.242). Differences in vegetation composition between wetland types were reflected through ordination using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). Both mitigation and natural wetlands met …

This analysis uses economic modeling techniques to analyze direct farm marketing sales, profits, and public policy in West Virginia. To investigate factors that affect county direct farm marketing, the impact of consumer demographic, land, and spatial variables upon county direct farm marketing sales is tested. The results reveal that income, education, land characteristics, and adjacent metropolitan areas influence direct farm marketing sales. An Input-Output (I-O) model is used to analyze a direct farm marketing public policy in the Mountain State. The purpose of this study was to determine which method of instruction, cooperative learning or direct instruction, would produce greater understanding of fractions with fourth graders. A pretest was administered to determine prior knowledge of fractions. Two thematic units were designed, one consisting of lessons using cooperative learning strategies with the other unit consisting of lessons using direct instruction methods. Each unit was presented to separate classes of fourth grade students. Upon completion of the units, a posttest was administered. The purpose of this study was to determine the in vivo survival rate and the in vitro shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded with either a halogen light OrtholuxTMXT or a plasma arc light ORTHO LiteTM. Ninety extracted premolars were divided into 6 treatment groups. Bond strengths were tested with an Instron testing machine and bracket failure interface with ARI score. Data was analyzed using ANOVA. his study is searching for the existence of any psychological effects on the attitudes or perceptions of West Virginia University students that are exposed to ethnic humor by stand-up comedians in a broadcast format. In this study a convenience sample of West Virginia University students was exposed to a fifteen-minute videotape containing multiple in-group solidarity ethnic jokes that were used by the selected comedians in their analyzed performances. Cultivation theory and social learning theory (SLT) are the basis of the study to help determine what impact sexual portrayals on television have on this young audience. Scripts from the top shows from one television season were examined to determine first, how much sexual content existed in the scripts, and second, what type of sexual content it was in the form of gender-based dyadic communication. This project examines the similar concepts of image and reputation, and outlines traditional theories of image through the more recent concepts of reputation management. The focus of the research is on corporations’ effective and ineffective use of reputation management techniques.
