Highways Of The Mind: The Haunting Of The Superhighway From The World's Fair To The World Wide Web., Helen J. Burgess

This dissertation investigates the way in which the rhetorical construction of the highway has been haunted, first by narratives of promise and progress and then of decay and death. Highways are figured as technological wonders marking the advent of a better future in the 1939 World's Fair and the advertising campaigns of the 1950s, and then as wired-up networks of death in science fictional accounts from the 60s to the 90s. At stake in this project is the very status of metaphor in the analysis of technology. The highway is a compelling 20th-century metaphor that reveals anxieties we have about …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of participation in a short-term, co-curricular, mathematics and science program (Science Engineering Mathematics Aerospace Academy, SEMAA) on the engagement rates of sixth and seventh grade students in public school mathematics classes. The outcome variable (engagement) was measured with the Student Record of Behavior at three time intervals. A 22.3 mixed ANOVA design was utilized to investigate three main effects (participation, grade level, and time) and their primary and secondary interactions. Results reflected no discernable impact of the SEMAA program on student engagement rates. Conclusions include alignment of ancillary programs and …

Resistance exercise and creatine supplementation independently improve strength and function in patients with neuromuscular diseases, but the effectiveness of the two combined in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is unknown. Additionally, no study has examined gender differences in strength and activities of daily living (ADLs) in CMT patients before or after resistance training, nor has ADL performance been used for exercise prescription. This dissertation traces the history of the discursive construction of the alphabetic letter in English. Perceived by Anglo-Saxon literati as the “atomic” unit of text, and the “custodian of history,” individual letters were imbued with essential existence that ranked them, like numbers and physical atoms, as fundamental units of matter. In later technological remediations of Anglo-Saxon texts, like the Early Modern production of AElfric's “Easter Sermon” using specially made Anglo-Saxon typefaces, or the digital facsimile of the Beowulf manuscript similar transhistorical properties are imputed to the letter. The present study assessed the effectiveness of cognitive and relaxation interventions on injured athletes' mood, pain, optimism, and adherence and compliance to rehabilitation. The total number of participants who completed this study was seven injured athletes (two females and five males) representing one NCAA Division I university (n = 6) and one NCAA Division II university (n = 1). All athletes incurred their injuries during participation in their sports and had surgery within one month prior to their season or during their competitive season. Background. Moral distress is a pervasive problem in nursing, contributing to loss of nurses' ethical integrity, dissatisfaction with the work of nursing, and loss of nurses from the workforce. Purpose. The purpose of this research was twofold: to further elucidate the experiences and consequences of professional nurses' moral distress and to formulate a logical, systematic, and explanatory theory of moral distress and its consequences. Unpaired electrons (radicals) have been implicated in numerous disease processes. They have also been proven useful in the study of intra- and intercellular processes. This work describes two approaches in the study of radicals. The first project involves the synthesis of a spin probe utilizing a stable nitroxide radical to probe DNA structures; the second includes studies of aryl radicals derived from arenediazonium ions found in common foods and other products. Alcohol exposure causes developmental abnormality known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), featured with central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. The cerebellum is vulnerable to ethanol toxicity. Developmental exposure to ethanol depletes the number of cerebellar granule cells; however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. A potential mechanism for ethanol-induced neuronal depletion is to reduce the pool of neuronal progenitors. The progression of the cell cycle is regulated by a family of protein kinases called cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs). We hypothesize that ethanol interferes with the CDK system and disrupts the cell cycle kinetics in cerebellar granule progenitors (CGPs). Pregnant rats were fed ad …

Thermolysis of the benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides provides easy access to a variety of pyrido[1′,2′:1,2]pyrimido[4,5- b]indoles and related heteroaromatic compounds. Methylation of some of these new compounds with methyl iodide occurs exclusively at the site of the indolo nitrogen. The simplicity of the reaction sequence makes the process especially attractive for the synthesis of novel heteroaromatic compounds as potential DNA-intercalating agents. The formation of pyrimido[6 ′,1′:2,3]pyrimido[4,5-b]indoles was unexpected and likely involved a novel [2+2] cycloaddition pathway of the benzannulated enyne-carbodiimides. Similarly, several novel heteroaromatics structurally related to ellipticine alkaloids are synthesized by thermolysis of the pyridannulated enyne-carbodiimides. This study used the Delphi Technique of forecasting and a panel of individuals having the knowledge of the University Housing Profession to ascertain the likelihood of events to happen within the next 20 years and the level of impact of those events upon the profession. Methodology. Six nominators selected for their expertise within the University Housing Profession nominated individuals to serve as expert panelists. Eighty-three individuals were nominated. Little is known about nest tree use of the endangered Virginia northern flying squirrel. I compared characteristics of nest trees used by Virginia northern flying squirrels with randomly selected trees during summer and fall of 2000 and 2001. I tracked 13 squirrels to 59 nest trees. Sixty-nine percent of the nests were in cavities and 31% were leaf nests. Yellow birch, black birch and American beech were selected for nest trees more than expected. Nest trees were in larger and taller trees than trees in the surrounding area. There were a significant number of trees located near skidder and hiking …

Computer-related accidents have caused injuries and fatalities in numerous applications. Normal Accident Theory (NAT) explains that these accidents are inevitable because of system complexity. Complex systems, such as computer-based systems, are highly interconnected, highly interactive, and tightly coupled. We do not have a scientific methodology to identify and quantify these complexities; specifically, NAT has not been operationalized for computer-based systems. Reports that estrogen (E2) treatment modulates arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism by bone and bone cells are found in the literature. However, conflicting indications of the relationship that exists between E2 and AA metabolism emerge from the analysis of those reports. The present studies were undertaken to determine if E2 effected the production of prostaglandins (PG) in human osteoblast-like cells (hOB), and if this effect is due to the regulation of key enzymes involved in PG production, namely cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) and the cyclooxygenases (COX-1, COX-2). Riparian zones play a major role in the structure and function of headwater stream ecosystems. Inputs of leaf litter from riparian zones are the primary energy source for secondary production in these streams and inputs of large woody debris (LWD) help shape stream habitat. Riparian zones of Appalachian streams were degraded by past timber harvest activities. Purpose. Severe emphysema affects peripheral skeletal muscle with only partial reversal with exercise training. The effects of mild emphysema on adaptation of peripheral skeletal muscle to different loading conditions are unknown. Methods. Male Syrian golden hamsters were instilled with saline (S, n = 6) or porcine elastase (E, n = 12) to induce mild emphysema prior to removal of the right Achilles tendon to induce overload (OV) of plantaris muscle and unloading (UL) of gastrocnemius. We used hydroacoustics to seasonally estimate regional density and combined river region total abundance of larvae, juvenile, and adult bay anchovy in the Hudson River Estuary from May 1996 through September 1998. This work examines the political and academic career of Zbigniew Brzezinski. Born in Warsaw in 1928 Brzezinski was a personification of the trials of interwar Poland that would culminate in the combined Nazi-Soviet invasion that would trigger World War II. The son of a Polish diplomat the young Brzezinski witnessed the war from a diplomatic outpost in Montreal where he developed an academic interest in the affairs of the Soviet Union. In 1950 Brzezinski moved on to Harvard where he gained an academic reputation examining the phenomenon of "totalitarianism" and the fragmenting nuances of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe. …

The Elk River Coal and Lumber Company and its president, Joseph Gardner Bradley, built the town of Widen located in Clay County, West Virginia. As coal production proved successful, the coal town rapidly grew and by 1950, Widen offered amenities such as a Y.M.C.A., theater, soda fountain, schools, and churches for the diverse composition of miners to enjoy. In 1952, a fifteen-month strike marked the climax of the history of Widen. Forty years later, we still have not seen a wilderness that is not a surface environment. There exist neither subterranean nor marine wilderness areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Special Education's monitoring system in bringing district special education programs into compliance with federal and state standards. Data for the study were obtained by surveying special education directors (22), special education teachers (848), and parents of students with exceptionalities (2,410) from 22 county school systems in West Virginia. The purpose of this study was to determine how previous romantic relationships impact subsequent romantic relationships. Specifically, this study examined if past relationship solidarity is related to current relationship commitment, satisfaction, investment, and maintenance behavior usage among individuals in dating relationships. Participants were 204 undergraduates at an Eastern university who were currently in a dating relationship. Results indicated that past relationship solidarity is significantly and negatively related to current relationship commitment and satisfaction, but not significantly related to current investment or maintenance behavior usage. The current study examined the relation between dietary restraint and caloric preload in thought suppression attempts. The impact of restraint status, suppression instructions, and a high calorie preload were examined among a sample of 64 college females classified as either restrained or unrestrained eaters. Participants engaged in a 60-minute laboratory activity; half of the participants were preloaded and all participants were randomly assigned to a food- and eatingrelated thought suppression condition or an expression control group. Difficulty of suppression and frequency of foods and eating-related thoughts were examined. Restrained participants instructed to suppress demonstrated significantly more food- and eating-related thoughts. …

This study examined the influence of birth order on verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness. Participants were 207 (111 men, 94 women; M age = 19.80) students. Participants completed the Verbal Aggressiveness Scale (Infante & Wigley, 1986) and the Argumentativeness Scale (Infante & Rancer, 1982). Results indicated first-born children reported significantly more argumentativeness than did youngest children. Men reported significantly more verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness than females. A significant difference did not exist between the verbal aggressiveness of first-born children, only-children, and laterborn children. This study was intended to be a replication and extension of Schroeder and Ketrow’s study (1997) of communication apprehension and nonverbal decoding ability, using the Interpersonal Perception Task -15 (Costanzo & Archer, 1993). This study explored specific nonverbal behaviors that are utilized by individuals who report high levels of communication apprehension when making judgments about an interaction. Moreover, the relationship between nonverbal decoding ability and interaction involvement was investigated. Results did not indicate any relationship between individuals’ scores on the IPT-15 and any other variable included in the study. Study one investigated the ability of uric acid (UA) to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the ability of UA to protect against ROS-mediated damage. Hydroxyl and superoxide radical ESR signals were reduced by addition of UA (P< 0.05). UA prevented lipid peroxidation in RAW 264.7 cells exposed to silica (P< 0.015). UA inhibited hydroxyl-mediated damage to λ Hind III DNA. The objective of study two was to determine the effect of changes in plasma UA (PUA) on growth and ascites development in broilers. Chicks were fed a grower diet supplemented with 0.5 moles inosine/kg feed to raise PUA, 15 mg allopurinol/kg body weight/day to lower PUA, or a control diet. Birds were housed in two environmental chambers; one had conditions to promote ascites while the second was held at standard conditions. Although dietary treatment had an effect on PUA, no effect of diet on performance or development of ascites was observed.
