Most of the literature on written feedback to date has attended to feedback techniques and the effects of such approaches on students' writing skills. Little emphasis has been placed on students' perspectives on teachers' written feedback. For this reason, the present study investigated how adult beginning students react to their teacher's written feedback on their Spanish compositions. The study used qualitative methods of data collection---questionnaires for the students, interviews with teachers and students and participant observations---in order to explore their reactions and perceptions. The current study investigates the difficulties Arabic speakers may encounter when pronouncing English consonants. All participants are adults who have been in contact with the American culture for at least four years. The results show that the Arabic speakers in this study had difficulties to pronounce eight English consonants. The results also demonstrate that the difficulties experienced by Arabic speakers may differ depending on the country they come from. For instance, a person from Kuwait may experience different problems with English consonants when compared to a person from Egypt. Coal mine bumps have presented serious mining problems in the United States throughout the 20th century. Persistent bump problems not only threaten the safety of miners, but also have caused the abandonment of large coal reserves and have led to premature mine closures. Current application of yield pillars shows that it can prevent coal bumps in some Longwall mines. In this dissertation, the need for a new method to design yield pillars in bump prone conditions is established. Approved clinical instructors (ACI) and athletic training students (ATS) were observed in the clinical learning environment over six observation sessions to correlate frequency/duration of observed behaviors with perceived behaviors and analyze clinical instruction behavior frequency/duration trends. The Clinical Instruction Analysis Tool-Athletic Training II and BEST software was utilized. Skill Feedback: Evaluative and Skill Feedback: Descriptive indicated strong ACI correlations. Screening and Evaluative Technique: Manipulation and Documentation indicated strong ATS correlations. Frequency and duration R2 values were not higher than 0.39. Largemouth bass provide an important recreational fishery in the Ohio River. Our objectives were to determine critical over-wintering and spawning habitats of largemouth bass in the Belleville Pool of the Ohio River. We surgically implanted radio-transmitters in 39 adult largemouth bass and tracked them over a 23-month period. Our results demonstrate the importance of off-channel habitats in the life history of largemouth bass in large river systems. Sedimentation, resulting in a loss of embayment quality and surface area, is an important problem and thus merits increased attention. Restoration and protection efforts to improve largemouth bass fisheries in large river systems …

A proposed section of Appalachian Corridor H will pass through an area of the Beaver Creek watershed in Tucker County, West Virginia previously mined for the acid-producing Upper Freeport coal. Presently, partially-reclaimed spoils from past mining activities are generating acid mine drainage and releasing sediments into streams and other water bodies. Soils of acid mine drainage impacted wetlands and non-impacted wetlands were characterized to establish baseline soil status and to gain a better understanding of the chemical and physical processes occurring in these wetlands. There is a heavy burden on tumor cells to acquire as many mutations as possible in a short time. Tumors seem to achieve that through genomic instability. The role of homologous recombinational repair loss has been well established as a mechanism of chromosomal instability. This research focuses on the durability of carbon FRP (CFRP) wraps bonded to concrete beams under accelerated and natural aging. Variation in mechanical properties of CFRP wrapped concrete beams due to aging through water immersion, salt and alkaline solution immersion at elevated and freeze-thaw temperature variation are studied. Different parameters evaluated during beam bending tests are: maximum load (moment), deflections, crack width, and deformability factor. Unlike the majority of scholarship on the anti-lynching movement, this study focuses on the contribution and interaction of trans-Atlantic participants in the nineteenth century phase of the movement. According to current historiography, the origin of the anti-lynching movement is generally associated with the protest journalism of Ida B. Wells and her exile from the American South in 1892. One of the key elements in auditory perception is the localization of sounds in space. The major cues used for localizing sounds in the azimuthal plane have long been recognized as interaural differences in time of arrival of a sound and amplitude differences between the two ears (Rayleigh 1907; Thompson 1878). High frequency sounds are reflected by the head and thereby produce interaural level differences (ILDs) that are used for localization. Numerical and theoretical studies of the excitability boundaries for spiral waves in 2D and scroll waves in 3D are presented. The boundaries are defined by unstable wave segments, which are stabilized by using a negative feedback control algorithm. A kinematic description of the constant-size, constant-shape wave segments is presented for 2D waves. Intricate patterns of wave propagation are exhibited in a chemical reaction-diffusion system with spatiotemporal feedback. Wave behavior is controlled by feedback-regulated excitability gradients that guide propagation in specified directions. Waves reflecting or refracting are observed when interacting with a discontinuity in excitability. Wave trajectories in fixed excitability gradients …

Turbulence plays an important role in ship wake flows. Without the knowledge of turbulent intensities and length scale information it is virtually impossible to model and predict turbulence characteristics in complex flows, such as ship wake flows. Moreover, the behavior of ship wakes requires an understanding of the turbulence near a free surface. The cSrc oncogene directs the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton in both normal and transformed cells. Mutation of protein binding domains (SH2 and SH3) from cSrc results in the deregulation of the kinase and the transformation of cells, while deletion of these domains blocks transformation by active forms of Src. This indicates that SH2/SH3 binding partners for cSrc may play a crucial role in the regulation of this kinase as well as the fulfillment of cSrc-directed functions. The fully grouted bolt is a passive support. It occupied the greatest portion of the annual roof bolt consumption in the U.S. There are three components of the fully grouted bolt; steel rebar (bolt), resin annulus, and rock/grout interaction. Fully grouted bolts are loaded in three ways: axial load, shear load and bending moment. Moreover, vertical shear stress is developed along the grout/rock interface. My dissertation considers, in one theoretical essay and two empirical essays, the implications of an unequal distribution of wealth and of firms' intangible assets for the predictability of the returns on stocks. The first two essays are concerned with the effect of wealth distribution on the stock market. Essay I shows how to conceptualize the wealth distribution effect on stock returns. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of child behavior problems, parenting distress, and child routines in relation to (a) family management of pediatric asthma and (b) children’s adherence to daily maintenance medication. Participants included 30 asthmatic children and their families. Assessment included questionnaires, an interview, and a medication dose-count monitor. Mean percent adherence rates obtained were comparable to the existing literature using similar methods. Scores on measures of parental distress, difficult child behavior, and child care routines were within the normal range. Essay I presents a set of more refined estimates of demand for cigarettes in the U.S. It was found that the dynamic fixed estimator (DFE) outperforms the pool mean group estimator (PMG) and the mean group estimator (MG) in the U.S. cigarette market from 1961 to 1997. The short-run price elasticity is −0.122, and the long run price elasticity is −0.716. Additionally, there is ample room for cigarette firms to raise revenue to pay for the settlement costs as long as the demand for cigarettes remains in the inelastic range. While much is known about the effect of hard contributions on political campaigns, very little attention has been given to the role of soft money in congressional elections. The Interpretive Development Program (IDP) of the National Park Service (NPS) develops and maintains the national standards for interpretation by providing professional development opportunities and administrating a peer review certification process of interpretive products. This study explores the little-understood phenomena of how opportunities for intellectual and emotional connections between the resource and the visitor are created by NPS interpreters.
