To establish the effect of sward height, concentrate feeding time and grazing time management on performance of grazing cattle, thirty-two cross-bred beef (24 Angus and 8 Hereford) cows (632 kg BW) and calves (104 kg BW) were grouped by weight and calving date. They were randomly assigned to two sward height (SH) treatments (4 to 8 or 8 to 12 cm), replicated four times. Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular tumor in adults and often results in unilateral blindness and/or death. Previous cytogenetic characterizations of this tumor have consistently revealed chromosomal abnormalities involving chromosomes 3, 6, and 8; reports of other abnormalities vary in frequency. We further defined cytogenetic abnormalities of this tumor using molecular cytogenetic techniques on 10 uveal malignant melanoma cell lines and 100 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumors.;The synthesis of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and spectral karyotyping (SKY) results revealed that chromosomal rearrangement plays a significant role in the generation of DNA sequence copy number abnormalities throughout the genome, but none …

When accuracy and strength are required in fabricating working casts improved dental stones are recommended. The main variable affecting this accuracy is linear setting expansion. In this research study the linear setting expansion of three commonly used improved dental stones were compared over an extended 2-week period. Hard Rock, Silky Rock and Prima-Rock were vacuum mixed following manufacturers instructions. Five specimens of each stone were measured for linear expansion using a SAM EMI100 Expansion measuring Device. Expansion measurements were made at 10 and 30 minutes, 2, 24, 48, 72, and 120 hours. Recreational Opportunities And Health Status In West Virginia, Yoav Sneh

Over half of all Americans are considered to be physically inactive and/or obese, leading to significant individual and societal costs. This study investigates the link between recreational supply and health status for West Virginia. Using spatial econometric techniques, this study provides solid evidence that the demand for health care is positively associated with physical inactivity rates, and that physical inactivity rates are inversely related to the supply of recreational opportunities. When promoting the importance of physical activity as preventative health care, policy makers should consider the provision of recreational opportunities as a means to overcome sedentary behaviors.

Studies have shown that CYP2C9.1 mediated metabolism of flurbiprofen and naproxen is activated by dapsone. However, dapsone activation has not been studied in the allelic variant forms of CYP2C9. Six concentrations of flurbiprofen or naproxen were co-incubated with six concentrations of dapsone and with reconstituted, purified CYP2C9.1, CYP2C9.2 (R144C), CYP2C9.3 (1359L), or CYP2C9.5 (D360E), in order to assess degrees of activation. Dapsone increased the efficiency (Vmax/Km) of flurbiprofen metabolism 690%, 3029%, 4600%, and 2100% by CYP2C9.1, CYP2C9.2, CYP2C9.3, and CYP2C9.5, respectively. Dapsone increased the efficiency of naproxen metabolism 591%, 1400%, 1150%, and 2100%, by CYP2C9.1, CYP2C9.2, CYP2C9.3, and CYP2C9.5, respectively. …

Iron deficiency is a nationwide concern. Dietary strategies issued by national organizations, aim to help prevent childhood iron deficiency. This study examined the relationship of dietary factors with iron status in WIC participants 6--24 months. This was a cross-sectional study of 50 rural infants and toddlers.;Iron deficiency was determined from one blood sample analyzed for serum ferritin (SF) and transferrin saturation (TS). Iron deficiency was defined as SF ≤ 15 ug/dL and TS ≤ 15%. Two, 24-hour dietary recalls were collected. Assisted living has become the fastest growing senior housing alternative for older adults, yet little research has been conducted with residents of assisted living. Relocation involves a major life change and is associated with health problems, poor adjustment, and increased mortality. Research on relocation into nursing homes suggests declines in health and psychological well-being frequently follow relocation and are greatest one to two months following entry into the facility. This dissertation is a collection of papers that features applications of public choice theory to the relationship between political constraints, incentives, and individual economic behavior. The first chapter introduces the two meanings of political constraints---(i) constraints self-imposed on the political process and (ii) constraints created by the political process; reviews the public choice literature on political constraints and incentives; and outlines the research agenda for the dissertation. Despite the wealth of research conducted on gypsy moth [(Lymantria dispar L.)(Lymantriidae: Lepidoptera)] populations dynamics, quantitative analysis of the native lepidopteran community in which gypsy moth has become naturalized is extremely limited. This study examined the population dynamics of native Lepidoptera in two gypsy moth management areas in West Virginia and Virginia. Variations in gene expression are the basis of differences in cell and tissue function, response to DNA damaging agents, susceptibility to genetic disease, and cellular differentiation. The purpose of this dissertation research was to characterize variation in basal gene expression among adult mouse tissues for selected stress response, DNA repair and damage control genes and to utilize variation in temporal gene expression patterns to identify candidate genes associated with germ cell differentiation from mitosis through meiosis in the prepubertal mouse testis. The iron and steel industry is energy intensive. The steel industry accounts for 2--3 of total US energy consumption. The energy costs account for 12--15% of the total cost of manufacturing steel. Cogeneration is done by most of the integrated steel producers for on-site electricity generation. The steel industries use different utility systems, and 90% of the industry uses standard steam boilers, steam turbines and BOP (Basic Oxygen Process). Two commonly used harvesting systems in central Appalachia were examined to determine the amount of soil compaction associated with each harvest type. A manual system of chainsaw and cable skidder, along with a mechanized system consisting of feller-buncher and grapple skidder were monitored in two central Appalachian hardwood forest sites. Examinations of soil bulk density (lbs/ft 3) were made pre-harvest and post-harvest for each harvest unit. Observations were conducted along the skid roads in conjunction to distance from the landing. Sample points were also taken systematically through each harvest site. The CVT has advantages over the conventional stepped ratio transmission because of its smooth, stepless shifting, simplified design, and a potential for reduced fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions. The power split CVPST has a potentially higher mechanical efficiency than a conventional shaft-to-shaft CVT, but it is unknown whether that efficiency can be improved. For the CVPST, the branch control circuit that contains the CVT can be disengaged at the ring gear for a 1:1 overall transmission ratio, which will interrupt the power flow through the CVT. Moisture diffusion was studied through neat resin as well as glass-fiber reinforced vinyl ester samples, both containing up to 5 wt% montmorillonite clay. Transient and steady-state diffusion experiments were carried out with both neat resin as well as glass-fiber reinforced samples. Effect of saline and alkaline solutions on the process of diffusion was studied. It was found that the diffusivity decreased due to the presence of nanoclay in polymer. Diesel particulate filters, or DPFs, are exhaust aftertreatment devices used to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel powered vehicles. Typical designs have a wall flow filter element downstream of an oxidation catalyst, which oxidizes a portion of the NO present in the exhaust stream to form NO2. The experiments were carried out in a wind tunnel having 40&feet; x 12&feet; x 9&feet; dimensions. Ethanol vapor mixed with nitrogen was used as a tracer gas. Samples were taken at the forehead, adjacent to the nose (nose), the mouth, neck, chest, right lapel, left lapel. This work involves an experimental investigation of creep behavior of commercial polymers used as encased liners in deteriorated sewer pipelines with emphasis on characterizing the effects of physical aging, temperature, and frequency. The procedure for finding the shift rate, mu, is based on Struik's protocol. Time-temperature superposition (TTSP) of short-term data, at different temperatures, was done. There is no clear answer to the research question concerning general test anxiety and sex difference according to the literature. An experiment using the modified Suinn Test Anxiety Behavior Scale (1971) was conducted to detect differences between the sexes with regard to test anxiety. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been extensively discussed and researched. However little appears in the literature about CLT use in EFL environments, such as Brazil. Few studies explore CLT adaptation in EFL environments, and if they do, such studies are mostly in Asian countries (Li, 1998; Burnaby & Sun, 1998). This research investigates CLT use in high schools and language institutes in Southern Brazil. The data consists of written questionnaires, class observations, and in-depth interviews with teachers.
