Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research on civil rights organizations builds upon the work of McAdam (1982), Morris (1984), Wilson (1995), Minkoff (1999) and Johnson and Stanford (2002). This study is concerned with organizational assessment and responses to changes in the external environment that contributed organizational adaptation, evolution or disbanding. Three fundamental objectives guide this analysis. First, it is important to locate contemporary African American politics within a historical framework in order to understand the extent to which past events may have shaped or influenced current organizational structure and behavior. Second, understanding how organizational type influences behavior and decision-making processes is crucial to developing …

An Analysis Of Transnational Corruption., Gregory P. Noone Jan 2007

An Analysis Of Transnational Corruption., Gregory P. Noone

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Transnational corruption is the type of corruption that crosses borders, involves corporate and state actors, and employs sophisticated and grand schemes to siphon the wealth of a country from its rightful owners: the people of the country. Quite simply, it is the grand theft of public funds for private gain. This is a significant problem because the amount of money stolen each year is staggering. Over one-quarter of Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) is lost to corruption annually, and in Latin America about ten percent of their GDP vanishes due to corruption. Transparency International estimates that at least four hundred …

An Investigation Of Student Characteristics' Influence On Retention At A Two-Year Proprietary Career College., Lisa Boice

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many students who enroll in higher education fail to complete their credential. This is especially true for students enrolled in two-year proprietary colleges where almost half leave without meeting their educational goals. Students at these institutions are largely underprepared and mostly nontraditional; their attrition has dire consequences for not only their own success, but that of society as well. Because most two-year students who drop out of college do so in their first year, early identification and intervention strategies are critical for student accomplishment and graduation. The purpose of the study was to uncover key retention issues that students face …

The behavior of a single liquid droplet impacting a solid surface is a complex phenomenon and is a basic component of various industrial processes. One such process is the film coating process in the pharmaceutical industry, where coating uniformity is important especially if the coating is for functional purposes. Coating variability on a tablet could be affected by several factors, one of which is the impingement of droplets on its surface. The spreading behavior of a droplet on a solid surface was reported to be affected by the surface properties, particularly the surface roughness. To understand these phenomena completely, a …

Pi3-Kinase Mediates Csrc Activation And Podosome Formation Through The Adaptor Protein, Afap-110, In Response To Pkcî± Activation., Valerie Glynis Walker Jan 2007

Pi3-Kinase Mediates Csrc Activation And Podosome Formation Through The Adaptor Protein, Afap-110, In Response To Pkcî± Activation., Valerie Glynis Walker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Significant evidence indicates the existence of cross-talk between PKCα, cSrc and PI3-kinase signaling pathways. Activation of each of these kinases results in substantial changes in actin filament concomitant with increased cell motility and invasive potential. The ability of PKCα to induce cSrc activation requires the adaptor protein, AFAP-110. This results in the disruption of the actin cytoskeleton and the formation of motility structures. Activation of PI3-kinase has been shown to direct up-regulation of PKCα activity. However the ability of PKCα to activate PI3-kinase remains controversial. Further, the integrity of the PH1 domain was required for PMA induced colocalization between AFAP-110 …

The Dynamic Integration Of Distributed Gis Through Semantic Web Services., Xuan Shi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While interest in the GIS community has traditionally “been almost entirely on the sharing of data” (Goodchild, 2003), Web Service, a solution of software interoperability, is regarded as the “future of geoprocessing” (Hecht, 2002). While data interoperability and data semantics has long been examined in the community of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), exploring the way for the effective sharing of GIS methods and tools is a completely new effort, although such a theme was only talked. Enabling the dynamic integration of geospatial data and geoprocessing functions and resources over heterogeneous systems and platforms through the cutting-edge technology of semantic Web …
