Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge: A Life Of Philanthropy In The Twentieth Century., Vanessa P. Tome
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge was one of the most important patrons of music in the United States and Europe in the 20th century. Raised as a member of Chicago’s upper middle class, Coolidge was prepared for a life as a wife and mother. An amateur pianist, she regularly performed at many of Chicago’s musicales. Coolidge had ambitions of pursuing a concert career which was discouraged by her family and social values. After the deaths of her father, mother, and husband she devoted her work to music. She brought chamber music into the public domain, as it once was reserved for private …
The Interactions Between Perceived Motivational Climate And Achievement Goal Orientations, And Their Relationship To Competitive State Anxiety And Self-Confidence Among High-School Swimmers., Justine Vosloo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current literature examining motivational climate (PMC) and goal orientations (AGO) with respect to anxiety found these variables may predict anxiety levels (Carr & Wyon, 2003) and be related to self-confidence levels (Magyar & Feltz, 2003). However, limited research exists on the compatibility/incompatibility of the interactive relationship between PMC and AGO on anxiety and self-confidence within a competitive sport setting. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the interaction between PMC, AGO and experienced intensity of competitive anxiety and self-confidence and interpretation of anxiety among high school swimmers (N=151). Gender differences were also examined. Results indicated no statistically significant interactions …

Understanding Tree - Soil Interactions: Can Species Alter Soil Nitrogen Availability?, Margaret A. Harlacher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Increasing anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen deposition has the potential to result in nitrogen saturation in Northeastern forests. The response of forests to chronic N additions may be governed by the stand composition and may differ across spatial scales. This suite of experiments addresses three objectives: (1) To determine the robustness of species-specific patterns of soil N availability across various spatial scales, and (2-3) To determine the potential species-specific effects of litter and seedlings of different species on soil N availability variables using a common-garden greenhouse experiment. There are detectable species-specific differences in soil N availability and related properties beneath dominant canopy …

Identification Of A Novel Importin α Predominantly Expressed In Bovine Oocytes And Early Embryos., Jyothsna Tejomurtula
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early embryonic development is a complex process that involves timely and quantitative control of gene transcription. Nuclear proteins, including transcription factors and chromatin remodeling proteins, are required for initiation of transcription in early embryos prior to embryonic genome activation. The nuclear transport of these proteins is mediated by transport factors such as importins. Through analysis of EST sequences from a bovine oocyte cDNA library and the database, we identified a novel transcript which shows sequence similarity to the importin α gene. The novel transcript (contig) is represented by multiple ESTs that are only present in the oocyte library and a …

Determination Of Diel Chemical Cycle Presence Within Abandoned Coal Mine Drainage Streams In Harrison County, West Virginia., Michael Jay Smilley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diel (24-hour) cycling of dissolved ions has been linked to various mechanisms such as fluctuations in temperature and photosynthetically-mediated pH. Yttrium and the rare earth elements (YREE) appear to fluctuate in response to temperature. After selecting a field site based on pH and temperature screening, five sampling events were undertaken: each involved hourly or bihourly sampling with concurrent stage, pH and temperature logging. For all events, YREE increased during the nighttime and decreased during the daytime. Dissolved Fe and Mn exhibited similar trends at one of the two sampled locations. Speciation models suggest that sulfate and carbonate-bound YREE species dominate …

A Hybrid Approach To Expert And Model Based Effort Estimation., Daniel Ryan Baker
A Hybrid Approach To Expert And Model Based Effort Estimation., Daniel Ryan Baker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is important to have a good cost estimate in order to budget a new project. Unfortunately, software effort estimation methods are often inaccurate. Molokken and Jorgensen report that 60-80% of the time a software project will overrun its estimate by an average of 30% [98]. Furthermore, most estimates do not describe the uncertainty of the estimate [52,54,118]. In addition, each source of uncertainty, as described by Kitchenham and Linkman [68], has yet to be represented. In this thesis, the design principles of an effort estimation tool called 2CEE are discussed. This tool is currently being deployed at NASA’s Jet …

Development Of Collaborative Order Processing And Inventory Tracking Software., Gaurav Singh
Development Of Collaborative Order Processing And Inventory Tracking Software., Gaurav Singh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Order processing and inventory tracking are key operational business processes. Enterprise Resource Planning systems organize these cross-functional processes within a company and eliminate interfaces between functional areas such as materials management and finance. However, they are not designed to manage processes across different departments of an organization and interfaces with external partners. There is still significant inefficiency in collaborative order processing and inventory tracking with customers, suppliers and service providers. Examples include repeated manual entries of order processing or status information. Although solutions for collaborative order processing and inventory tracking exist, these are proprietary and costly in nature. Software vendors …

De Novo Asymmetric Syntheses Of Unnatural Manno-Trisaccharides, Homo-Adenosine, Digitoxin And Landomycin A., Maoquan Zhou
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
De novo asymmetric synthesis is a strategy that uses asymmetric catalysis to construct chiral molecules from achiral starting materials. De novo approach to carbohydrate builds saccharides from commercially available achiral starting material which will enable the medicinal chemist to install a much broader range of carbohydrates on natural products and in a SAR-amenable fashion. The palladium-catalyzed glycosylation reaction stereoselectively converts 2-substituted 6-tert-butoxycarboxy-2H-pyran-3(6H)-ones into 2-substituted 6-alkoxy-2H-pyran-3(6H)-ones. By using this reaction, a divergent library of the natural and unnatural 1,4-manno-trisaccharides as well as branched 1,4- and 1,6-linked trisacchardes were synthesized. The 1,4-α-manno-disaccharides were achieved in eight total steps starting from achiral acylfuran. …

Kinetics Of Corrosion And Dross Build-Up In Molten Zn-Al Systems., Jing Xu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research investigates the mechanisms of corrosion attack and dross build-up in molten Zn-Al systems. In hot-dip coating processes, molten Zn-Al baths corrode the submerged hardware, thus requiring frequent line stoppages for maintenance, repair, and replacement of parts. Similarly, containment of liquid Al/Al alloy during melting and recycling processes leads to corrosion of refractory walls, contamination of melt, and subsequent product quality deterioration as well as energy loss. The goals of the research are to (1) explore the corrosion mechanism in molten Zn/Zn-Al baths by studying corrosion rates and interfacial metallography; (2) determine the kinetics of dross adhesion to the …

Issues For P-Type Doping Of Gallium Nitride With Beryllium And Magnesium Grown By Rf-Plasma Assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy., Kyoungnae Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
P-type doping in GaN remains a critical issue for GaN-based electronic and optoelectronic devices. Accurate temperature measurement of GaN during molecular beam epitaxy growth is one of the decisive factors to obtain high p-type conductivity due to background carrier concentrations, leading to the compensation effect on p-type doping, and to issues related to dopant incorporation and solubility. Thermocouples or optical pyrometers have been used to determine the substrate temperature of GaN in conventional MBE systems. Both require secondary calibration, leading to inaccurate reading and poor reproducibility of substrate temperature. In-situ cathodoluminescence (CL) occurring during reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) …

Synthesis Of Polyol Natural Products: Applications To Rk-397 And Virginiamycin., Matthew S. Mortensen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A 3-step method for the preparation of 2-methyl-l,3-syn diols was developed and demonstrated on several examples. A previous incarnation of this method was used in the formal synthesis of two polyoxygenated natural products. RK-397 is a 32-membered oxopolyene macrolide antibiotic which also exhibits anti-cancer activity. Virginiamycin M2 (also known as flavofungin I) is a member of the streptogramin antibiotic family which are active against vancomycin-resistant s. aureus. The methodology employed for setting many of the stereocenters in these two products is asymmetric catalysis. This allows for either enantiomer to be created and also is efficient by means of chirality multiplication.
