Eleven tennis coaches participated in the SP workshop and none of the tennis coaches completed the follow-up. Some evidence supported the impact of a tailored SP workshop …

An In Vitro Assessment Of An Engineered Cationic Antimicrobial Peptide (Ecap) Against Planktonic Strains Of Enterococcus Faecalis., Kent Alexander Mcbride Jan 2007

An In Vitro Assessment Of An Engineered Cationic Antimicrobial Peptide (Ecap) Against Planktonic Strains Of Enterococcus Faecalis., Kent Alexander Mcbride

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Traditionally, endodontic therapy has maintained very high success rates; however when teeth are obturated with a positive culture in the root canal, the success rate of treatment is only 68% (50). Therefore, complete elimination of bacteria from the root canal system is a crucial aspect of endodontic therapy. Studies consistently show that success rates for teeth that were necrotic before treatment are lower than cases with vital pulps. Consequently, efforts must be made to find a solution or method that more consistently disinfects the canals prior to obturation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new antimicrobial cationic …

A Robust Hybrid-Arq Protocol For Relay Networks., Syed Amaar Ahmad Jan 2007

A Robust Hybrid-Arq Protocol For Relay Networks., Syed Amaar Ahmad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores wireless relay networks using the hybrid-ARQ protocol. Relay networks exploit spatial diversity from ‘redundant’ nodes in contrast to the single path of classic networks. Thus they show superior performance in dealing with fading and interference. The hybrid-ARQ technique under the constraints of noncoherent orthogonal modulation and hard-decision decoding is the primary focus of the thesis. Information theoretic bounds on the performance for such a system are derived. The extension of hybrid-ARQ from a point-to-point protocol to a broadcast-oriented relaying protocol called HARBINGER (hybrid-ARQ based intra-cluster geographic relaying) was presented in a 2005 paper by Zhao and Valenti. …

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole Jan 2007

Mining History: Extracting Qualitative And Quantitative Resources For The Discovery Of Appalachian Cultural Landscapes., Hannah Leigh Cole

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

he most recent trend in historic preservation has led many in the field to pay attention to cultural landscapes as historic resources. Considering buildings, structures, or objects within a given spatial and physical setting, or landscape, endows them with historic significance and context that would be absent if viewed individually. While this is somewhat of an expansive approach to the built environment, this trend in historic landscape interpretation still does not account for all types of resources that one finds in the field. A fragmentary landscape is a cultural landscape defined by three characteristics: 1) the presence of buildings, structures, …

An Evaluation Of The Strength Characteristics Of Horizontally Curved Steel I-Girder Bridges., Lauren E. Cullen Jan 2007

An Evaluation Of The Strength Characteristics Of Horizontally Curved Steel I-Girder Bridges., Lauren E. Cullen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Horizontally curved bridges occupy a growing number of the steel bridge population in the United States today because they are often one of the few options available for difficult roadway alignments. Horizontally curved bridges offer aesthetic and economic benefits over comparable straight-chorded bridges. However, there are additional design, analysis and construction issues to consider for horizontally curved bridges compared to the design of straight-chorded bridges. To ensure uniform standards and safety requirements, the FHWA created the Consortium of University Research Teams (CURT) in 1969 to conduct research on horizontally curved girders and develop guide specifications for design. In a cooperative …

Glimpses Of Wilsonianism: United States Involvement In Nicaragua During The Coolidge Era., Steven R. Hall Jan 2007

Glimpses Of Wilsonianism: United States Involvement In Nicaragua During The Coolidge Era., Steven R. Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The military occupation of Nicaragua was one of the Calvin Coolidge administration’s most unpopular foreign policies. Upon the death of President Warren G. Harding in 1923, Coolidge inherited the White House and a Nicaraguan withdrawal plan set up years earlier. As planned, the United States monitored the Nicaraguan national elections in 1924, and withdrew its occupation force in 1925. When the country collapsed into civil war a few months later, the Coolidge administration ordered the Marines back into Nicaragua to restore order. Coolidge and his Secretary of State, Frank B. Kellogg, argued the occupation was necessary to protect American economic …

Effects Of Acceptance, Distraction, And Sensory Monitoring On Acute Pain And Attention., Brandon N. Kyle Jan 2007

Effects Of Acceptance, Distraction, And Sensory Monitoring On Acute Pain And Attention., Brandon N. Kyle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research has consistently shown a relation between attention and the experience of pain. Pain disrupts and demands attention, interfering with the ability to direct attention to other stimuli in the environment. Yet, various studies of pain management strategies, including studies which have yielded mixed results for the strategy of distraction, often have not specifically examined the relation of pain management, attention, and pain behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of different pain management strategies and the relation between strategy efficacy and attention in a laboratory pressure pain-induction experiment. Using 96 college undergraduates, the study employed …

Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell Jan 2007

Managing Welfare Stigma From The Other Side Of The Desk: A Look At Rural Tanf Caseworkers., Sarah L. Hartzell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Welfare recipients have always been stigmatized. The welfare reform legislation of 1996 reflects widespread attitudes and stereotypes of welfare recipients, which are translated into the structure of state welfare programs and are carried down through the administration to the welfare caseworker—the “face” of welfare for recipients. Literature on welfare stigma has focused on clients, but not their caseworkers. Using qualitative methods, this paper presents a Goffmanian analysis of the effects of welfare stigma on these caseworkers, who not only interact with clients in their jobs everyday, but who also implement a stigmatizing social program. The caseworkers in this study constructed …

The Relationship Between Journalists And Public Relations Practitioners During Crises., Cassie A. Waugh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The relationship between journalists and public relations practitioners has long been perceived as strained at best. The Sago Mine disaster brought crisis communications to the forefront when the media reported inaccurate information during the event. Journalists at a panel discussion made claims that this could possibly have been avoided had there been better public relations at the scene. Does a crisis change the relationship between journalists and public relations practitioners? If so, how does it change? If not, what is the status of the relationship to begin with? This study examines those questions and sheds light on the issues surrounding …

Feed currently incurs 60-65% of the total cost of broiler production. Pellets are the primary feed form for commercially-reared broilers. Understanding how to optimize pellet quality through precision thermo-mechanical processing may impact broiler performance and nutrient availability, thus cost of production. Steam conditioning represents a manipulable thermo-mechanical processing variable. Corn-soybean meal based diets were conditioned with one of four steam pressure x temperature combinations: 138 kPa at 82.2ºC, 138 kPa at 93.3ºC, 552 kPa at 82.2ºC or 552 kPa at 93.3ºC. High steam pressure and temperature conditioning were shown to increase pellet quality. Three additional diets were prepared: unprocessed mash, …

Where It's At: Testing Urban Residential Preferences Of Creative And Noncreative Classes Of College Students., Robert Benjamin Travis Decola Jan 2007

Where It's At: Testing Urban Residential Preferences Of Creative And Noncreative Classes Of College Students., Robert Benjamin Travis Decola

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis uses data collected from a larger survey about residential preferences of undergraduate college students to show that a distinct group of creative students has a statistically significant preference for an urban residence. In addition to predicting urban residential preferences, students who have a creative major also have a significantly higher desire for bohemian cultural amenities. Regression results indicate that having a creative major mediates the direct effect of desiring bohemian cultural amenities on the preference for an urban residential environment. The evidence suggests that having a creative major socializes individuals into valuing bohemian cultural amenities in order to …

The Effects Of Permeability And Well Completion On Methane Gas Production From Hydrate Bearing Reservoir., Gopal Ganti Jan 2007

The Effects Of Permeability And Well Completion On Methane Gas Production From Hydrate Bearing Reservoir., Gopal Ganti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Earth’s store of hydrocarbons will no longer supply adequate energy to its growing economics and population. By then, a type of hydrocarbons called hydrates may be ready to take their place as significant sources of energy. Hydrates are also a special combination of two common substances, water and natural gas. If these meet under conditions in which pressure is high and temperature is low, they join to form a solid, ice-like substance. Vast volumes of sediments in the ocean bottoms and Polar Regions are conducive to hydrate formation. Gas hydrates are solid, ice-like crystalline materials which contain entrapped gas …

The Byzantine Perspective Of The First Crusade: A Reexamination Of Alleged Treachery And Betrayal., Laura M. Nelson Jan 2007

The Byzantine Perspective Of The First Crusade: A Reexamination Of Alleged Treachery And Betrayal., Laura M. Nelson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Scholars have generally ignored the Crusades from the Byzantine perspective with the majority of scholarship focusing on the Western, and more recently, Arabic viewpoints. Western sources from the period such as the Gesta Francorum and the account of Fulcher of Chartres typically portray Alexius I, the Byzantine emperor during the First Crusade, as anti-Western. It is this study’s position that Alexius’s actions derived from a need to protect his people and empire rather than a desire to see the crusaders’ mission fail. By studying the Byzantine perspective, we gain a fuller understanding of the First Crusade and the Crusades as …
