Strain Energy Density Based Failure Criterion For Gfrp Coupons Under Tension And Bending, Deepika Vadlamani
Strain Energy Density Based Failure Criterion For Gfrp Coupons Under Tension And Bending, Deepika Vadlamani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Accurate prediction of failure strength is one of the major concerns in the design of fabric reinforced polymer composites. Though there are numerous failure criteria available, each criterion suits particular test data, and also lack of critical experimental results makes it difficult to assess the accuracy of these criteria. Hence, much research needs to be done to understand the mechanical characterization of fabric based polymer composites and develop a generalized theory considering the overall properties, so that the proposed theory is valid for a wide range of experimental data.;In this study, five different E-glass/vinyl ester symmetric laminates (unidirectional, bi-directional, tri-directional …

Numerical Investigation Of Wing Morphing Capabilities Applied To A Horten Type Swept Wing Geometry, Ashwin Vishwanathan
Numerical Investigation Of Wing Morphing Capabilities Applied To A Horten Type Swept Wing Geometry, Ashwin Vishwanathan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The inspiration for this work has been derived from the work done by Lippisch, the Hortens, Northrop and largely by the flight of birds in nature. Swept-wing tailless aircraft have been in vogue since World War-II and have now taken on a new role in stealth warfare primarily due to their low radar signatures. They also exhibit a highly efficient aerodynamic configuration with low parasitic drag. However, conventional tailless aircraft suffer from a lack of proper control mechanisms and have thus been forced to compromise their efficiency for better control. This work done at WVU aims to introduce a morphing …

Indexing Techniques For Fingerprint And Iris Databases, Rajiv Mukherjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis addresses the problem of biometric indexing in the context of fingerprint and iris databases. In large scale authentication system, the goal is to determine the identity of a subject from a large set of identities. Indexing is a technique to reduce the number of candidate identities to be considered by the identification algorithm. The fingerprint indexing technique (for closed set identification) proposed in this thesis is based on a combination of minutiae and ridge features. Experiments conducted on the FVC2002 and FVC2004 databases indicate that the inclusion of ridge features aids in enhancing indexing performance. The thesis also …

Faculty Perceptions Of The Role Of Foreign Language Education At West Virginia University, William L. White
Faculty Perceptions Of The Role Of Foreign Language Education At West Virginia University, William L. White
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Foreign language education has a long history within higher education. However, since the late 1960s, foreign language enrollment, measured by percentages of students taking language courses, has declined by almost 50% in American colleges and universities. The author contends that much of this decline can be explained by three concomitant forces; including (1) the rise of professional programs that are constrained by an exactness of education that precludes study beyond rather narrowly defined plans of study; (2) the lack of language learning success that foreign language students demonstrate upon completion of language programs; and (3) the failure of language departments …

Knowledge of the interaction between proteins is necessary for understanding how the cellular machinery operates. Multiple methods have been developed to study protein-protein interaction, but only two have been able to provide large amount of information for S. cerevisae protein-protein network. Due to the multiple spurious data coming from these methods, there is a need of new complementary methods to improve confidence of the interactions. A new method is developed in this dissertation where the protein complexes are pulled down (immunoprecipitated) using tagged single chain antibodies specific for one of the proteins. Different affinity tags are chosen as candidates for …

Coded Continuous-Phase Fsk: Information Theoretic Limits And Receiver Design., Shi Cheng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Continuous-phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK) is a type of frequency shift keying (FSK) that maintains phase continuity from symbol to symbol. The bandwidth efficiency of a CPFSK waveform is characterized by its modulation index, number of frequency tones and channel coding rate. These parameters can be flexibly designed to meet different bandwidth and energy requirements in wireless communication systems. One special case of CPFSK, orthogonal FSK, could be applied when bandwidth constraints are loose. By increasing the number of frequency tones, the energy efficiency can be improved at the expense of spectral efficiency. In this dissertation, the general case of …

Perceptions Of The Environment For Physical Activity: Perspectives From Community Residents And Policy Officials., John R. Geer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adult residents (n = 184) of two counties in West Virginia completed a survey assessing perceptions of their physical and social environments, and self-reported physical activity (PA). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine of these participants who met CDC PA recommendations, and with 10 individuals involved in public policy regarding perceptions of their communities for PA and issues related to PA barriers. Active residents were more likely to use community facilities than inactive residents (p < .001). In addition, active residents reported significantly higher self-efficacy for meeting PA recommendations than inactive residents (p < .001). Overall, participants with high self-efficacy were eight times more likely to meet recommended levels of PA. Residents’ environmental barriers to PA included lack of accessibility to facilities, lack of community walkability, and safety and traffic issues. Personal barriers to PA were also commonly cited by residents, including being too busy/having competing demands and poor attitude/motivation. Residents cited the use of exercise partners or groups as being important for increasing physical activity. Policy officials cited similar environmental and personal barriers, but often placed responsibility for overcoming those barriers on the residents within their communities.
