Petrologic Study Of The Murrysville Sandstone In Southwestern Pennsylvania, Melissa L. Sager
Petrologic Study Of The Murrysville Sandstone In Southwestern Pennsylvania, Melissa L. Sager
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pennsylvania's Murrysville sandstone has been a proven gas producer since 1859 and a gas storage field since 1951. Using 49 side-wall cores from a gas well drilled in Westmoreland County, depositional environment and diagenesis are examined. In thin section, 5 microfacies are recognized. The lower two-thirds of the Murrysville is equivalent to the Cussewago of northwestern Pennsylvania and is interpreted as fluvial deltaic. The upper third is equivalent to the Berea of Ohio and is interpreted as being a marine transitional stream deposit.;Compaction was not extensive due to low amounts of ductile grains, rigid grain stability and matrix occupying space …
Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback
Indian Warfare, Household Competency, And The Settlement Of The Western Virginia Frontier, 1749 To 1794, John M. Boback
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The thesis of this dissertation is that Indian-related violence and warfare had a profound influence on the duration and nature of the frontier experience of those men and women who settled in the western Virginia backcountry between 1749 and 1794. Recurrent attacks by Shawnees, Delawares, Mingos, and Indians from the Great Lakes region caused such widespread death, destruction, and depopulation that it effectively prolonged the period of austere and difficult living conditions for over forty years. This conclusion contradicts the assertions of some recent scholars who have argued that crude living conditions lasted for only a year or two on …
Social Rank And Social Anxiety, Jennifer A. Chrystan
Social Rank And Social Anxiety, Jennifer A. Chrystan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of the current study was to investigate a primary assumption of social rank theory. More specifically, the purpose was to determine whether the perception of social inferiority leads to increased anxiety during social interaction, with a heightened effect occurring among those who are more socially anxious. Although multiple studies have demonstrated shared covariates between social anxiety and perceptions of inferiority, virtually no research has been dedicated to scrutinizing the causal relationship proposed by social rank theory. One hundred undergraduate students at West Virginia University participated in this study. Participants engaged in three social interaction tasks with a same-gender …
Epithelial Mechanisms In Airway Responses Induced By Hyperosmolarity, Yi Jing
Epithelial Mechanisms In Airway Responses Induced By Hyperosmolarity, Yi Jing
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
There is airway dilation in normal people but obstruction in asthmatic patients during exercise; this has been thought to be initiated by hyperventilation causing evaporative water loss and hyperosmolarity of the airway surface liquid (ASL). In animal experiments the epithelium can detect osmolarity increases in the ASL and mediate relaxation of airway smooth muscle by releasing epithelium-derived relaxing factor (EpDRF), while in asthmatic patients this local regulatory function could be altered because of damage to epithelium. Challenged by hyperosmolarity, epithelial cells undergo shrinkage, volume-related ion transport, and release regulatory mediators, such as EpDRF. The changes in epithelial ion transport and …
Using Blended Instruction To Teach Academic Vocabulary Collocations: A Case Study, M. Teresa Das Neves Seesink
Using Blended Instruction To Teach Academic Vocabulary Collocations: A Case Study, M. Teresa Das Neves Seesink
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Learning second language vocabulary has always been a challenge for second language (L2) learners. Transferring new vocabulary to an active stage has been an even greater challenge.;In the 1990s, Lewis (2002a) proposed the Lexical Approach as a means to help L2 learners with vocabulary acquisition. This approach encouraged the teaching of vocabulary in chunks, or in other words, putting emphasis on collocations. Focus on vocabulary collocations was suggested by several researchers (Brown, 1974; Hinkel, 2004; Lewis, 2001). They supported the teaching of collocations via in-class exercises. Cobb (1999) and Kaur and Hegelheimer (2005) showed that the use of a concordancer---an …

Pre-Breeding Food Habits And Condition Of Ruffed Grouse And Effects On Reproduction In The Central And Southern Appalachians, C. Robert Long
Pre-Breeding Food Habits And Condition Of Ruffed Grouse And Effects On Reproduction In The Central And Southern Appalachians, C. Robert Long
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous researchers have hypothesized that low ruffed grouse densities in the central and southern Appalachians may be related to nutritional constraints. Working as part of the Appalachian Cooperative Grouse Research Project (ACGRP), I investigated the pre-breeding food habits and body condition of 432 ruffed grouse from 9 states and explored relations between nutrition of breeding females and productivity in the central and southern Appalachians. The pre-breeding diet of ruffed grouse in the Appalachians differed substantially from grouse in more northern regions and was highly variable among and within sites and years. Grouse feeding on hard mast contained 71--79% greater fat …
Student Nagging Behavior In The College Classroom, Katie Neary Dunleavy
Student Nagging Behavior In The College Classroom, Katie Neary Dunleavy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nagging is a persuasive tactic yet to be fully explored in instructional communication. Nagging involves an exchange in which a student makes persistent requests of an instructor who fails to comply. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine nagging in the college classroom in order to ensure nagging was not just an aspect of other instructional concepts. The purpose was also to determine why students choose to nag, to examine the strategies students use to nag, and to examine the perceptions of students and instructors of these strategies. Finally, the purpose was also to examine nagging as a potentially …
Genetic And Evolutionary Consequences Of Harvest In American Ginseng, Panax Quinquefolius L. (Araliaceae), Emily H. Mooney
Genetic And Evolutionary Consequences Of Harvest In American Ginseng, Panax Quinquefolius L. (Araliaceae), Emily H. Mooney
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) is a wild-harvested perennial plant of the eastern deciduous forest. Harvest supplies world markets with roots used in Asian medicine, but this practice is fatal to plants. The objective of this research was to investigate the genetic and evolutionary consequences of harvest. As seen in animal species, harvest may alter size selection by preferentially removing large individuals. Chapter 2 describes my study of harvest's effects on size selection. From the simulated harvests, I observed that large-sized plants lose their fitness advantages in harvested populations. Harvest pressure could ultimately lead to population divergence if selected traits …
Molecular Mechanisms Of Chromium(Vi)-Induced Apoptosis And Malignant Transformation, Neelam Azad
Molecular Mechanisms Of Chromium(Vi)-Induced Apoptosis And Malignant Transformation, Neelam Azad
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] compounds are redox cycling environmental carcinogens that induce apoptosis as the primary mode of cell death. Apoptosis is abnormally regulated in various disorders including cancer. Therefore, to understand the etiologies of these diseases, it is important to delineate the biochemical and molecular pathways involved in the regulation of apoptosis. The main objective of this study was to characterize the molecular mechanisms involved in Cr(VI)-induced apoptosis and malignant transformation. We found that both death receptor and mitochondrial pathways of apoptosis are involved in Cr(VI)-induced apoptosis, with the latter being more dominant. Consequently, overexpression of the mitochondrial anti-apoptotic protein …

Numerical Study Of Wingtip Shed Vorticity Reduction By Wing Boundary Layer Control, Jose Alejandro Posada
Numerical Study Of Wingtip Shed Vorticity Reduction By Wing Boundary Layer Control, Jose Alejandro Posada
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Wingtip vortex reductions have been obtained by Boundary Layer Control application to an AR=1.5 rectangular wing using a NACA 0012 airfoil. If wingtip shed vorticity could be reduced significantly, then so would induced drag resulting in improved cruise fuel economy. Power savings would be even more impressive at low flight speed or in climb.;A two dimensional wing produces lift without wingtip vorticity. Its bound vorticity, Gamma, equals the contour integral of the boundary layer vorticity gamma or Gamma = ∮gamma · dl. Where the upper and lower boundary layers meet at the cusped TE, their local static pressure pu=pl then …
Growth Of Diesel Exhaust Particulate Matter In A Ventilated Mine Tunnel, Glen A. Wilt
Growth Of Diesel Exhaust Particulate Matter In A Ventilated Mine Tunnel, Glen A. Wilt
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this work was to study the formation and evolutionary characteristics of aerosols, originating from the exhaust plume of a diesel engine operating in a ventilated mine tunnel. To extract these characteristics, precise cross-sectional scalar exhaust maps of CO2, temperature, and aerosol concentration were generated and used to track the time averaged axial development of the plume. These maps were then used to position aerosol size distribution samples within critical regions of the plume. This approach was found to provide an efficient and thorough record of aerosol formation and evolution, as a result of naturally dispersed diesel exhaust …
The 3 Pigs: Interactive Performance, Ana Magdalena Torres Villarreal
The 3 Pigs: Interactive Performance, Ana Magdalena Torres Villarreal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
"The 3 Pigs," by Ana Torres Villarreal, is an interactive performance, a dramatic parody within the realm of conceptual art. Transplanting the moral from a traditional tale, "The Three Little Pigs," to a current world of politics and iconized and institutional ideas, "The 3 Pigs" questions definitions and ways of acting. The objective was to trigger the interactive process and bring awareness to alliances that attribute identities and provokes fear towards the other. The pigs-wolves situation and the gallery-artist situation are related to the U.S.-Mexico situation. Connected by the idea for the need for "walls" to protect' them from a …

Advanced Modeling For Small Glass Furnaces, Heath A. Morris
Advanced Modeling For Small Glass Furnaces, Heath A. Morris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the most pressing issues facing the glass industry is improving energy efficiency. The largest energy user in any glass company is the melting furnace or furnaces. While large float glass and container glass companies have developed sophisticated control systems, little work has been done until recently for small glass furnaces. This thesis extends the work of Holladay (2005), in which an observer was developed to estimate the temperature of glass in a small day-tank furnace. The current work eliminates the assumption of homogeneous glass melt and refractory temperatures, and develops a furnace model suitable for implementation with a …

Changes To In-Stream Turbidity Following Construction Of A Forest Road In A Forested Watershed In West Virginia, William Frank Sharp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 1999, a study was initiated in two forested headwater channels to compare and contrast changes to in-stream suspended sediment and turbidity following the construction of a forest haul road. Turbidity (NTU), suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) (mg L-1) and streamflow (L s -1), were measured throughout May 2005. Both catchments are ephemeral/intermittent tributaries of the Left Fork of Clover Run in the Cheat River watershed. To exclude inputs of hillside sediment both catchments were continuously lined with silt fence from constructed gauging/sampling stations to the upper most portions of their drainage network. In July 2002, construction of a 0.93 km …
Power Market Analysis Tool For Congestion Management, Silpa Parnandi
Power Market Analysis Tool For Congestion Management, Silpa Parnandi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The privatization and deregulation of electricity markets has increased competition and electricity may be produced and consumed in amounts that would cause the transmission system to operate beyond transfer limits---the system is congested. Hence, congestion management is a fundamental transmission management problem. In this thesis, a power market analysis tool is designed for congestion management. The tool creates an interface between PowerWorld (c), a professional software tool to compute power flows, and MATLAB RTM. The tool helps in analyzing power flow results, batch-processing of large case studies, and providing the user with options to manage congestions. A graphical user interface …
Development Of Water Production Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Praveen Kumar Burka Narayana
Development Of Water Production Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Praveen Kumar Burka Narayana
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coalbed methane is an unconventional gas resource that consists of methane production from the coal seams. The key parameters for the evaluation of coalbed methane (CBM) prospects are the gas resources, reserves and deliverability. Coalbed methane reservoirs are dual-porosity media where the vast majority of the gas is stored in the low permeability coal matrix (primary porosity) by sorption. The flow to production wells, however, occurs through the coal's natural fracture system (secondary porosity), which stores relatively small amounts of gas, because coal matrix practically has no permeability.;For the gas to be released from the coal, its partial pressure must …
