The Relation Between Hostility And Social Support: Investigating Potential Mediation Or Moderation By Trait Forgiveness, Attributional Style, And Trait Empathy., Benjamin Parker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A substantial body of scientific literature has examined the relations among hostility, social support, and physical and psychological functioning. Typically, positive relations are observed between hostility and various problematic health concerns and negative relations are observed between social support and these same problematic health concerns. Hostility is commonly associated with decreased ratings of social support. The purpose of this study was to explore this relation between hostility and low social support, and determine whether three variables derived from the positive psychology literature (trait forgiveness, attributional style, and empathy) either moderate or mediate this relation. One hundred and fifty two female …
An Examination Of Parenting Strategies, Attitudes, And Stress In Foster And Biological Parents Of Young Children., Kristine E. Rork
An Examination Of Parenting Strategies, Attitudes, And Stress In Foster And Biological Parents Of Young Children., Kristine E. Rork
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The child welfare system is undergoing a crisis in which there are a greater number of foster children requiring temporary housing arrangements than there are foster parents available to provide housing for them. However, despite this fact, little research has been performed regarding the needs and characteristics of foster parents. To help retain these foster parents, they must believe their needs are being met by the child welfare system; otherwise, there is an increased risk of foster parents deciding not to foster in the future. The present study investigated differences between a sample of 30 foster parents of children ages …
Impact Of Co-Morbid Insomnia On Health -Related Quality Of Life And Patient Preferences In The Primary Care Setting., Anuja N. Roy
Impact Of Co-Morbid Insomnia On Health -Related Quality Of Life And Patient Preferences In The Primary Care Setting., Anuja N. Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is estimated that almost one-thirds of the patients in primary care settings experience some form of insomnia. Co-morbid insomnia accounts for almost 75% of such cases and, is considered to be a symptom (rather than a stand-alone disorder) that remits with treatment of the underlying medical or psychiatric disorder. In Phase I, this study examined if there was any incremental impact of co-morbid insomnia (after controlling for confounding covariates) on health-related quality of life (as measured by the Medical Outcomes Study 36 Item Short-Form Health Survey, i.e., SF-36, and the EuroQoL 5D, i.e., EQ-5D) compared to similar patients without …
The Dynamics Involved In Web-Based Learning Environment (Wle) Interface Design And Human-Computer Interactions (Hci): Connections With Learning Performance., Ivana Schnitman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Distance education has always served as an option for students who could not attend school in a traditional way. However, educators know very little about online pedagogy and the related use of Web-based Learning Environment (WLE)s as instructional delivery and support systems for education. To make Web-based Instruction (WBI) a good experience, careful attention should be devoted to the elements that comprise the environment: the pedagogical and technical design components. The goal of this study was to investigate the dynamics involved in the HCI that take place within a WLE. The research objective was to examine the existing views of …

Training Experiences And Feelings Of Competency In Utilizing Multicultural Counseling Guidelines., Lauren Rae Krug
Training Experiences And Feelings Of Competency In Utilizing Multicultural Counseling Guidelines., Lauren Rae Krug
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Awareness of changing demographics in the United States has resulted in psychologists paying greater attention to multicultural issues. As a result, in 1993, the APA adopted a set of guidelines, the “Guidelines for Providers of Psychological Services to Ethnic, Linguistic, and Culturally Diverse Populations,†directed to all areas of practice. This document consists of a set of forty brief, action-oriented recommendations. Despite frequent calls for multicultural guidelines and increased attention to multicultural issues, no research has evaluated the use of these guidelines in the context of the treatment setting or examined the impact of training on the incorporation of the …

Process and production data were gathered by visiting six sawmill facilities in …
Essays In Trade, Foreign Aid And Investment. Essay 1: Motivation For Bilateral Aid Allocation: Altruism Or Trade Benefits. Essay 2: Does Institutional Quality Matter For Investment And Capital Mobility? Evidence From Sub -Saharan Africa. Essay 3: Do Donors Care About Declining Trade Revenue From Liberalization? An Analysis Of Aid Allocation. (With Subhayu Bandyopadhyay)., Javed Younas
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Essay 1: Motivation for bilateral aid allocation: Altruism or trade benefits. This paper argues that bilateral aid from developed OECD countries is disproportionately allocated to recipient nations who have a greater tendency to import goods in which donor nations have a comparative advantage in production. The estimates indicate that a substantially larger amount of aid per capita is provided to recipients who import capital goods, while imports by other category groups have no significant effects. Given that developed donor nations are major producers and exporters of capital goods, this result at least partially supports their trade benefits motive. On the …
Appalachian Heritage Language And Appalachian Migration: A Sociolinguistic Family Study., Sarah M. Hamilton
Appalachian Heritage Language And Appalachian Migration: A Sociolinguistic Family Study., Sarah M. Hamilton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study qualitatively and quantitatively analyzes a selection of the linguistic features evidenced by one Appalachian family affected by the massive out-migration of Appalachian peoples during the mid-twentieth century. After many years away, some of these Appalachian migrants are returning to their original home communities. Unlike some scholars claim (Smith-Jones 1997), the experience of living away from the home community seems to have had an effect on the migrants’ language, in line with other research on mobility and language awareness (Clopper and Pisoni 2006). In analyzing the family’s speech corpus of conversational interviews and reading passages, I consider the distribution …

The Role Of The Endothelin System In Prostaglandin F(2)Alpha-Induced Luteolysis., Matthew Dale Doerr
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent evidence supports a role for luteal endothelial cells in mediating PGF2αinduced luteolysis via production of endothelin-1 (ET-1). Three experiments were designed to examine how the endothelin system mediates luteolytic actions of PGF2α. The first objective was to examine in vitro the anti-steroidogenic actions of PGF2α and ET-1 in the presence of a type-A or B receptor antagonist in day-8 luteal minces. The second experiment was designed to measure in vivo, the effectiveness of PGF2α in inducing luteolysis when actions of ET-1 had been blocked by sustained administration of either a type-A or type-B endothelin receptor antagonist. In the third …
Predictive Vegetation Models: A Comparison Of Model Combination Approaches., Benjamin F. Gilmer Iv
Predictive Vegetation Models: A Comparison Of Model Combination Approaches., Benjamin F. Gilmer Iv
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The distribution of plants and animals in space and time has long been a focus of many biogeographical and ecological studies. The various approaches for modeling species distributions are rooted in the quantification of the species-environment relationship, where bioclimatic variables are used to explain the distribution of species and communities. Predictive modeling of species distribution has become a widespread tool in the areas of conservation biology, climate change research, land-use/land-cover change assessment, and biodiversity estimates. Although many statistical methods are now available, previous model comparison studies have found little difference in prediction accuracy when models were compared using the same …

Before The Acts: The Romantic Sublime, Gender, Art, And The Modern In Virginia Woolf's "Between The Acts"., Erin K. Johns
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A moment that fills a person with awe, terror, agony, and silence is the simplest way to describe Edmund Burke s conception of the sublime, which stems from the Greek rhetorician, Longinus, and undergoes philosophical critique by Immanuel Kant. The male poets of the British Romantic period, like William Wordsworth, P.B. Shelley, and John Keats, created a literary conversation critiquing Burke s binary of the beautiful and the sublime. Although the sublime is often grounded among these poets, the contemporary critic, Anne K. Mellor, argues for a feminist reading of the sublime, which centers around female writers of the Romantic …

Across the nation, thousands of shrines were demolished and merged under governmental authorization. The goal of this study is to map the shrine change from before the policy to after to determine areas of change. An emphasis on centrality from the capital in …
A Simple And Reliable Method For Gas Well Deliverability Determination., Arman G. Yussefabad
A Simple And Reliable Method For Gas Well Deliverability Determination., Arman G. Yussefabad
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Multi-rate tests generally provide accurate values for gas reservoir formation parameters and deliverability equation coefficients. This type of results enables the engineer to make proper decisions on whether remedial work is required and the potential improvement that can be achieved. The multi-rate tests, such as isochronal or modified isochronal tests, are however cumbersome to conduct due to need for achieving stabilization or lengthy shut-in periods. The goal of this study has been to develop a simple and reliable method for gas well deliverability determination based on a single rate build-up or fall-off test. Traditionally, single rate well tests have been …
Data Discretization Simplified: Randomized Binary Search Trees For Data Preprocessing., Donald Joseph Boland Jr.
Data Discretization Simplified: Randomized Binary Search Trees For Data Preprocessing., Donald Joseph Boland Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Data discretization is a commonly used preprocessing method in data mining. Several authors have put forth claims that a particular method they have written performs better than other competing methods in this field. Examining these methods we have found that they rely upon unnecessarily complex data structures and techniques in order to perform their preprocessing. They also typically involve sorting each new record to determine its location in the preceding data. We describe what we consider to be a simple discretization method based upon a randomized binary search tree that provides the sorting routine as one of the properties of …
