Web-Based Relay Management With Biometric Authentication, Brian Graeber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis proposes a web-based system for managing digital relay settings. These relays are deployed in the power system to protect sensitive and expensive equipment from physical damage during system faults and overload conditions. Providing this capability exposes these devices to the same cyber security threats that corporations have faced for many years.;This thesis investigates the risks and requirements for deploying the proposed system. A breakdown in the protection that these relays provide would cause power outages. The cost of outages can be significant. Therefore cyber security is critical in the system design. Cyber security requirements for the power industry …

Feasibility And Optimum Design Study Of A Low Speed Wind Turbine Rotor System For Underground Communication Power, John E. Harman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A need has been recognized to have battery charging capabilities in underground mines, independent of outside AC power sources. In the event of emergency, the radios located throughout underground mines stay charged for periods insufficient to ensure the safety of trapped mineworkers. Air is always being distributed to supply oxygen and to dilute explosive gases throughout all sections of the mine. An idea to charge the batteries using the energy stored in the moving air was recently proposed. The feasibility of using a small wind turbine to charge the batteries in this airlflow will be addressed by this thesis. If …

Thermal Rearrangement Of 4-Aryl-4-Hydroxy-2-Cyclobuten-1-Ones And Application Of The Methodology In The Formation Of Benzofuronaphthoquinones And Benzocarbazolequinones, Kimberly Denise Fisher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cyclobutenediones have proven useful as starting materials for synthesis of highly functionalized biologically relevant molecules. The rearrangement of cyclobutendiones has a wide synthetic scope and can be utilized as a key step in the construction of quinones, benzo[o]isoxazoles, and 3-methylenoxoindoles having a variety of substitution patterns. Construction of these molecules involves thermolysis of 4-hydroxy-2,4-di-aryl-2-cyclobutenones derived from squaric acid ester. In each of the cases the mechanism proceeds through an initial ring opening of the cyclobutene to afford a ketene intermediate that subsequently undergoes a ring closure with various intermolecular nucleophiles. This methodology has been utilized in the construction of an …

Production Of Docosahexaenoic Acid By Crypthecodinium Cohnii Using Continuous-Mode Process, Deniz Inan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in cold-water fish, has positive health benefits. While the suggested amount of 220 mg/day for adults may be attained by consuming fish, this may increase exposure to environmental pollutants. The heterotrophic marine alga Crypthecodinium cohnii is an important source of DHA because C. cohnii can accumulate lipid greater than 20% of their biomass with a large fraction of DHA (30-50%). Commercially, DHA production by C. cohnii is conducted in large bioreactors (∼100 m3 capacity) using a batch-mode process. The purpose of this study was to investigate lipid and DHA production by C. …

Three Essays On Credit Constraints And Capital Structure, Christine M. Harrington Jan 2008

Three Essays On Credit Constraints And Capital Structure, Christine M. Harrington

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The first essay, "Debt Capacity Constraints, Information, and the Pecking Order Model of Capital Structure", investigates why the pecking order model does not appear to describe the financing choices of small and growth firms. The pecking order model predicts debt issues only when a firm has the capacity to absorb new debt and when firm value is relatively predictable. By explicitly controlling for asymmetric information about firm risk, empirical tests support the predictions of the pecking order model for small and growth firms.;The second essay, "The Sensitivity of Investment to Internal Funds When the Costs of External Funds Differ", asks …

Automatic Control And Fault Diagnosis Of Mems Lateral Comb Resonators, Afshin Izadian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent advancements in microfabrication of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems have made MEMS an important part of many applications such as safety and sensor/control devices. Miniature structure of MEMS makes them very sensitive to the environmental and operating conditions. In addition, fault in the device might change the parameters and result in unwanted behavioral variations. Therefore, imperfect device structure, fault and operating point dependencies suggest for active control of MEMS.;This research is focused on two main areas of control and fault diagnosis of MEMS devices. In the control part, the application of adaptive controllers is introduced for trajectory control of the …

Adaptive Frame Selection For Enhanced Face Recognition In Low-Resolution Videos, Raghavender Reddy Jillela Jan 2008

Adaptive Frame Selection For Enhanced Face Recognition In Low-Resolution Videos, Raghavender Reddy Jillela

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Performing face detection and recognition in low-resolution videos (e.g., surveillance videos) is a challenging task. To enhance the biometric content in these videos, image-level and score-level fusion techniques can be used to consolidate the information available in successive low-resolution frames. In particular, super-resolution can be used to perform image-level fusion while the simple sum-rule can be used to perform score-level fusion. In this thesis we propose a technique which adaptively selects low-resolution frames for fusion based on optical flow information. The proposed technique automatically disregards frames that may cause severe artifacts in the super-resolved output by examining the optical flow …

Development Of A Micro-Depth Sensing Indentation Technique With Constant Load Control, Ailing Lin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In material nano- and micro-indentation research, Young's modulus can be obtained based on the initial unloading stiffness of the load-depth curve. The accurate load and displacement measurement as well as high precision position control of the indenter are needed to achieve the required measurement resolution. The application of PZT actuator is often used to perform the indentation experiment. However, conventional PZT controllers can only provide displacement control. Furthermore, each PZT actuator only serves a specific PZT controller using its unique calibration factor. Thus, it is beneficial to develop a controller, which can carry out both load and displacement control algorithm, …

Effect Of Circulation Control Blowing Slots On Stall Angles Of A 10:1 Elliptical Airfoil, Jonathan Kweder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Circulation control is a high-lift methodology that can be used on the wing of an aircraft. This technology has been in the research and development phase for over sixty years primarily for fixed wing aircraft when the early models were referred to as "blown flaps." Circulation control works by increasing the near surface velocity of the airflow over the leading edge and/or trailing edge of a specially designed aircraft wing using a series of blowing slots that eject high velocity jets of air. The wing has a rounded trailing edge, and ejects the air tangentially, through these slots inducing the …

Bioinformatic Study Of Gamma-Secretase And Its Substrates, Fei Nan Jan 2008

Bioinformatic Study Of Gamma-Secretase And Its Substrates, Fei Nan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

gamma-Secretase is an enzymatic complex critical to amyloid formation and other important pathophysiological processes. Non-specific gamma-secretase inhibitors are not ideal for intervention of familial Alzheimer's disease. The four essential include Presenilin (PS1 or PS-2), APH-1, Pen-2, nicastrin (Nct). Also gamma-secretase cleaves a variety of substrates (over 30). But different sites are cleaved even in a single substrate and no consensus sequence for cleavage by gamma-secretase is identified. We hypothesize that consensus compositional sequence (or functional domain) in components of gamma-secretase and/or its substrates should exist during gamma-secretase regulation and specific gamma-secretase inhibitor based on such consensus sequence (or functional domain) …
